Skype for mac?

I am a Army wife and want to download skype for my new mac notebook. but i am so afraid of downloading it and it causing virus or failure somehow. i was very very prone to virus on my pc, which is why i got a mac. how is skype for mac? recommended or not?

Nothing here to worry about. Look for Skype at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Macs are not Windows PCs. See the following:
Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

Where is TOOLS in Skype for Mac (to activate an external webcam)?

"Tools" are a Windows thing. On a Mac, you'll want Preferences, to be found in the dropdown menu under Skype at the top of your screen.

  • Missing localizations in Skype for Mac

    Hello,
there are a lot of localizations (bg, da, de, en, es, et, fr, it, ja, ko, nl, no, pl, pt_BR, ru, zh_TW) included in Skype for Mac, but some localizations which are present in Windows Version missing in Mac version eg. Czech.
Is planned include Czech (and/or any other) localization into standard installation Skype for Mac?
Note: Czech localization was in Skype for Mac before 5.x version, but in version 5.x missing.

    Hi All.
If intolerable for Microsoft to do Czech Skype, then I'm willing to do it myself. All you need to do are original and unlocked. Nib files. I've located a lot of free applications for the Mac, including some versions of Skype. But it is locked. Nib files, it's horrible. Although you can do is hack, but it's pretty standard and so can not do everything.   If you can not give the Czech in the installation, then it can be addressed after all downloading package with Czech separately.

  • Import CSV file Skype for Mac

Cannot seem to import contacts.  It is well hidden if it is possible, if not, it is a ridiculous omission.
    Dear Skype;
Please add the feature of importing contacts from a CSV file, or better yet from a google account.

There is no way to import contacts directly into Skype for Mac from a CSV file. However, you can import contacts (with email and phone information) into Contacts.app. These system contacts can then be viewed in Skype using the Mac Contacts feature. See Preferences > General > Show Mac Contacts.
Part of the reason that it's not currently possible to import contacts in this way is because of the hadshake required: you must send a contact request to each contact you wish to add to your list. This includes a message explaining who you are, and why they should add you. Most people won't be able to receive a call or IM from you until they've accepted your contact request.
One last thing: your contact list is stored in the cloud. So when you log into Skype for Mac, you'll see your list of contacts just as it was on your Android device (for example).

  • Skype for mac os 10.5.8 / very disappointed about...

Since many years I payed a subscription "unlimited Europe" to use skype with mac os 10.5.8 but from yesterday the programme dont' work and ask me to update the programme mac os 10.6? I am very angry and disappointed about it. Until yesterday I used skype version 6.3., please can you support me in this, how is possible to continue use mac os 10.5.8, there is some  method with info.plist????

    Hi,
I can attest that this fix below works ... in both OS 10.4.11 and in 10.5.8 ...
    Note:
You will first need to download Skype version 2.8.0.866 for Mac, to get this exact result.
This fix may work for this latest mess created by MS cutting off a far newer version for use with 10.5.8 just the other day ...
but I decided to go back to version 2.8.0.866, because it is a far better design and more useful to me than the newer versions ...
however, it has been handicapped in one way ... The video call function in it no longer works, it is audio calls only ... not sure if the conference calling works, because I never use it .... but works fine otherwise.
Here is the posting I got this information from. It is a very helpful group, which has been addressing fixing these types of issues since MS first began creating these problems ... unnecessarily so, I should add ...
    http://community.skype.com/t5/Mac/My-solution-to-continue-using-Skype-2-8-on-older-OS-X-Lion-etc/td-...
    1) Quit Skype.
    2) Locate /Applications/Skype.app, right-click on it and click "Show package content".
    3) Open the folder "Content", then inside, open Info.plist either with Property List Editor (more convenient) or any other normal text editor.
    4) Search for your old version string (like 2.8.0.866) and replace it with the new one (6.15.0.334). In PLE, you do this by clicking on the value two times and then editing it, in other editors just search&replace.
    5) Save your changes, exit the editor, start Skype and login.
Additionally, in Mac OS 10.4.11 you can not directly edit that Info.plist file ... in this situation, it is necessary to open a new Text Edit file, then copy and paste the entirity of the original file, and rename it with the same name ... then make the necessary edits to the new file ... then remove the original file from that folder and replace it with the new one ... make sure it is working properly before trashing the original ...
That is an important file, so be very meticulous and careful with those edits ...
    Hope this helps!
    Sincerely

  • How safe is Skype (for Mac)?

Are there any security concerns that I should be worried about? I'll be using it to communicate with people i don't know in real life. Can I be hacked in any way over the line? Also, are there settings to prevent the webcam from accidentally being used?
Moreover, I also read that a while ago, there was an exploit in Skype, specifically for Mac, that made it 'wormable'. Surely this has been fixed?
So, is the App and especially, Skyping completely safe, providing I don't click on any links that are sent?
    Thanks!

I don't know of any security issues with it - you can choose not to let it access your Mac contacts, and disable auto-updates if you prefer. There are privacy options as shown below.

  • New Skype for Mac 7.0

Yikes. This version looks terrifying. The whole redesigning of the chat experience was not needed. It was very clean and simple before. Now there are unneeded chat bubbles, pictures of my contacts instead of names (my friends have some really stupid pictures), and a bunch of unnecessary colors. Making everything blue is just ridiculous. I understand that is Skype's color but there's a fine line between branding and poor design.  With that being said, the biggest flaw is the lack of customization to the redesign. If I could at least change the color or get rid of my friend's profile pictures in replacement of their name again (what a crazy concept), I wouldn't really have too much of an issue.  Back to 6 we go...

Good and bad feelings about this. I mostly use Skype for keeping in touch with my co-workers so we have a number of running transcripts going at all times in multiple "groups" and a lot of times you have to scroll back and catch up with ongoing conversations. GoodLove having chat transcript next to video chat, not squished below it. This is huge and a major improvementInline images and smoother file transfer with more visual cues as to what's going on. File transfer maintains even if video chat is over, for example. This is good."Flat" graphics - just a taste thing but I like them BadSO MUCH BLUE, and so many blues. I see three subtly different blues at all times and it's a hodgepodge. Would prefer more message styling options. (more than two)Maximum width to texts means unnecessary wrapping even when the Skype window is really widePadding for icons and timestamp takes up unecessary room which makes the maxwidth thing even more glaring at narrow widthsDon't want to see everyone's icons all the time, want to see more textBalloon stuff is goofy and childish and takes up space and doesn't solve a problem. Would like to never see balloons again.Should be an easy one-click "Get this file" for file transfers not a multi-step "show me in the finder, oh there it is, now please open the file" I get the value of quick look but if I want is to open the file, this is an extra stepI hope you address some of the message styling issues with an update because they're really jarring and not an improvement from my perspective but the message/video alignment is huge for me.

  • "Your video is turned off" on Skype for Mac

Recently, my iMac is displaying "Your video is turned off" when I try to videoconference with some other Skype users. I have Skype 6.3 installed. My wife is overseas for 6 months, and she is using a MacBook with Skype 2.8 installed. She refuses for personal reasons to upgrade to another version. Video doesn't work between us. Has the source of this problem been isolated yet, and is anyone trying to fix it?

I have contacted Skype through several channels, and visited lots of online forums.  The Skype rep I chatted with seemed little aware of this problem, and gave me several useless fixes. Some of what I read led me to believe that this problem is more difficult to deal with if you are using more recent Macs with the newest OS's. So, I was trying to find out if the problem is all Skype's, or also some part Apple's. Most of what I read online also was of the opinion that Microsoft was not making any effort to fix it (if it can be fixed). I have an open mind on that issue, but I would like to know more precisely what is going on.
    Thanks for your suggestion, though.

Keeping Option pressed, select "Library" from the menu.
Open the "Application Support" folder, then "Skype", then your Skype name.

Same problem here on 10.10.2. I even went and merged my MS account and my Skype account to see if I could authenticate that was but no such luck. I know that my details are correct since I can login to the web site just fine, I just can't use Skype on my Mac.  This is a complete blocker.

  • Boynq Alibi camera and Skype for Mac

    Hi,
I have the latest Skype upgrade, with Mac OS 10.7.5.  I have a Boynq Alibi camera that used to work with Skype before.  Indeed, it is still working with all other softwares.  However, it does not work with Skype anymore.  When I go in Skype -> Preferences -> Video, I can select the camera and get audio from it.  However, the video appears totally black.  It is like if only Skype could not connect to the video part of the camera.  I've tried to totally uninstall Skype and then reinstall it (Removing the library files), but still no success.  Any solutions?
    Thanks!
    Patrick

    Hi Patrick,
sorry to hear about your camera not working any more. Can you please help us investigating this issue by supplying a log file of Skype accessing the camera? Here are the instructions on how to creat this Skype log file: http://developer.skype.com/SkypeGarage/LogFile
    Thanks in advance.
