Sleep, click, run, sleep, click, run

My MacPro just recently started having sleep issues. I'm trying to figure out what changed and came up with two recent possibilities.
To explain the problem first, I usually manually click "sleep" from my log in screen when I log out. The screen goes blank, I hear my Mac wind down (sleep) Then about half a minute later, I hear a small "click" and then it starts running again, but the screen stays asleep. Less than a minute later, I hear it wind down again. Thirty seconds or so, "click" and it starts running again (screen still sleeps) and the process keeps repeating itself.
Now to what has changed recently that possibly is contributing to this. I got a new monitor. Could that possibly be preventing my Mac from sleeping? I am not sure if this problem started immediately after getting it however.
The other issue I've had more recently is my external hard drive used for TimeMachine backups. It was working great for over a year now. A couple days ago I was getting several errors a day that TimeMachine could not complete a backup. I would hear this click and run noise and nothing would seem to start up. I finally disconnected the external drive and turned off TimeMachine all together. Eventually I will want to run it in the background again.
But since doing all that, my Mac will no longer stay in deep sleep.
Thoughts? Thank you.

Reset the System Management Controller: > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1806
and then reconnecting your external devices one at a time, testing for sleep before adding another.
Then if it still won't stay asleep see > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776

  • MBP won't sleep, HDD constantly running (clicking), even with no programs open

When I close the lid on my Mac at night it doesn't sleep, and I can hear the HDD quietly chattering away. Even when I'm using it during the day I can similarly hear the HDD going, even if I'm just using MS Word, Safari and Itunes - I'm a student, so my day-to-day needs don't really push my Mac that hard!
The only thing I'm worried about is if it's going to knacker the HDD if it's running 24 hours a day. Am I just being paranoid, or is it something I should chase?
It only really started happening after I bought an external HDD to use as a time capsule. I never really have it connected though, except when I back up once a week. It's a Samsung 1TB Seagate. Any Ideas?

    Try a PRAM reset:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • MBP running out of battery power before sleeping - Help!

    Hi
My MacBook Pro has been running out of battery power before the memory-saving sleep mode kicks in, so it dies with a little click of the HD. It's not a hibernation state as when I reattach the power supply it boots up a new session.
I've noticed this since upgrading to Snow Leopard last year, but put it down to an old battery that had 45% charge and wasn't powering the MBP properly. I now have a replacement A1175 5600mAh battery which is giving me 2-3hrs usage (which I'm pleased at), but now it still dies before sleeping!
I have tried to cycle the new battery, but can't. I have reset the SMC several times, with no effect.
I used to cycle the battery every week or two, running it down until it would no longer wake from sleep, recharge overnight etc, but now I can't do this because it will die before sleeping!
I've read quite a few articles over the net about this issue, but there seems like no cure. It's really annoying me now as I frequently work on the move and a dying MBP could potentially be disastrous.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Is there something I haven't tried yet? I think it's a late '06 MBP.

If you are not getting a warning, then there is something amiss with your battery. If a SMC reset and calibration does not fix the problem, then you may need to make an appointment at the genius bar and arrange to have your battery tested.
My old battery started doing the same thing--shutting down without warning. I replaced it, and the replacement battery started doing the exact same thing. I then returned the replacement, and the next replacement battery behaves in a normal fashion.
My first battery was worn out. My second battery was defective. My third battery is good.
Your battery should still be under warranty. Go back to where you got it and show them what it is doing and see if you can get a replacement.
    Good luck!

  • IMac 600mhz will not sleep, nor allow dbl-click open

I've got a stubborn little slot-loading iMac 600mhz here, running OS 9.2.1. It arrived from my friend with what seemed to be a dead PRAM battery and these two issues:
    1. it will not go to sleep automatically, no matter how the energy saver control panel is set. It WILL go to sleep when manually told to do so (thru menu or power button)
    2. It often will not allow opening anything with a double-click. You can only open files, the HD, apps, etc by using the "open" command in the menus.
    3. Oddly, it completely ignores a PRAM-reset keyboard startup command, just starts up normally.
These symptoms have survived all of the following:
    1. replaced PRAM battery
    2. ran Tech Tool Pro (nothing found wrong)
    3. Tech Tool Pro's PRAM "zap" command.
    4. rebuilt desktop
    5. Installed clean copy of OS 9.2.1
    6. Reset PMU (via logic board button)
    7. optimized the HD and swapped RAM modules(these were being done anyway as part of upgrade)
I'm trying to get this iMac ready to update the firmware and install OS X, but these pesky little symptoms worry me. what could be causing them?
    PowerBook G4

Unplug, then replug the keyboard. Try the mouse in one of the machine's USB slots. Try a different keyboard, or buy a replacement. It never hurts to have a spare in case you get a coffee spill or the like.

  • Mac Pro Clicks Off When Waking from Sleep

This is a recurring problem, that is all the more annoying for its lack of consistency. Occasionally when my Mac is sleeping it'll just "click" (it actually makes a clicking sound) and shut off immediately when I try to wake it. Pressing the power button does nothing.
After a lot of trial and error I've found that the best solution is to unplug the power cord and wait for maybe 15+ seconds. Then I plug it back in, press the power button and she starts up like nothing happened--as if we don't both know what happened.
I'm on a good streak now, and it hasn't happened for a while, but given my experiences with it, I can't really relax.
Any ideas? Thanks for your time.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I bet it's draw!
Yep, power draw. How about this for a knee slapper:
I had my MacPro plugged in to the same socket as a moderatly
stuffed PeeCee and every time I woke up the MacPro the PeeCee
would click off. The PeeCee PSU wasn't getting enough juice
    and just turned off.
Now I have a poor electrical system in the current house that
I'm in. I think the Main breaker is 15 amps and the two that
split off are 10 each. So I can't toast toast and nuke some
cold coffee at the same time that the 3 PCs and the 22" CRT
are on in a lit room without the main breaker tripping. But
without the toaster and nukrowave running the MacPro when
waking up harshly dims all the lights in the house for about
    0.5 seconds.
If your Mac is asking for more than it's getting there might
be some smart circutry in the PSU (like there is in most nice
PeeCee PSUs) that turn it off before it causes any trouble.
Make sure it's that only thing plugged into the socket that
you're using for it and see if that doesn't solve it.

  • When I use I tunes radio, click pause, leave mac to go into sleep mode, wake mac

when I use I tunes radio, click pause, leave mac to go into sleep mode, return  press play I tunes will not resatrt on same station. I have to pick another for a few seconds and then return to original. then it works ok.
not a big problem but its annoying. Any ideas ?
    thanks very much

I lugged the G4 around town to three different computer repair shops, and they all confirmed that I had installed the fans correctly, and all fans were running fine. Of course, this only makes the problem harder to solve.
Furthermore, my friend was using the G4 last night when it was a cool 72 degrees (F) in his apartment, and the computer still forced itself into Sleep mode after just over an hour of use. He was using Final Cut Pro at the time, editing a project spread across two external FireWire hard drives. I just can't imagine this amount of activity overheating the G4, which was my editing workhorse for six years before handing it over to my friend.
When I replaced the cooling fans, I did select new fans with slightly lower airflow than the original fans (which many people have replaced, due to the amount of noise they produce). Any opinions on whether that could be the issue?
    _Case fan:_
    Original: 151.85 CFM airflow
    Replacement: 109.6 CFM airflow
    _Power Supply fans:_
    Original: 38.1 CFM airflow
    Replacement: 26.5 CFM airflow

  • PowerPC clicks into sleep mode, then clicks right back

Hi everyone. New thing I am experiencing since yesterday - my computer will go into sleep mode, but immediately clicks back on again. It's a Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5 from 2005 running on OSX 10.4.11. At first I thought it was an issue with one of our light switches - because sometimes when you press the switch to turn it off, the computer will wake up from sleep. But that switch is completely off and the computer is still having this problem not staying asleep. What can I do to fix this? Thanks.

Hi Christy, and a warm welcome to the forum!
Most often it's a USB or FireWire device that wakes it up, sometimes a PCI card or even a Monitor.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), see if it sleeps in Safe Mode.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

  • How to force the display to sleep, while keeping the computer running?

I'm running some compression and transcoding programs on my iMac G5 (iSight) that keeps the CPU at 100% for hours at a time. My Energy Saver prefernces is set to sleep the display after a few minutes, but never to sleep the computer or the hard disk.
Like I'd expect with such a high CPU load, my computer's screen does not go to sleep.
Is there a program or command line utility that I can run to force my screen to go to sleep, but keep the computer running?
    iMac G5 17" (iSight)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    To put your display only to sleep;
Go to System Preferences, click on 'energy saver', check the 'Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for' box, and then set the time. Note; this just puts the display to sleep, not the whole computer. Your hard disk will keep running. I find this much more convienent than putting the computer in 'full sheep'. It wakes up much quicker without some of the hassle some computers display coming up from full sleep.

Hello Albert, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Won't go to sleep. Running slow

I am running OS X Mavericks on a late 2012 mac book pro and it will not sleep the light just stays solid and it is running slow. Can anyone help?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that takes administrator privileges.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

This has happened EVERY time the iMac goes to sleep for the last few days.. the only way I have found to resolve the issue is to manually restart the computer each time via the button on the back of the iMac.
Any and all help is appreciated!

FWIW, I never sleep my machines or their HDs, just their displays and never have an issue waking up the displays, usually run 24/7. Give that a shot.

  • Loud clicking from G5 after waking from sleep mode

    Hello,
I have a Power Mac G5 - 1.8 Ghz, 80 gig HD, 1.25 gig ram, OS 10.5.6.  I upgraded the OS to 10.5 from 10.3 about a year ago and have kept up with software updates.  Since performing the upgrade, the machine makes a moderately loud clicking noise when it comes out of sleep mode.  It always awakens and operates normally.  I have run the hardware tests and have detected no errors.
I have searched the forums and not found any other topics that would give me some insight into what this might be.  Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks.

yes, and to the best of my limited ability to make heads or tails of them, it says fans are normal and that the temp seems to be normal. Here is a portion of what it said leading up to my last sleep:

  • Macbook pro runs really slow after sleep mode

My MBP ( MacBook Pro (13-inch, medio 2012), 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB), runs very slow after sleep mode. I notice that when I wake it up, my memory usage is nearly 8 GB. After a restart it is back no a normal level, between 2 and 5 GB depending on how many programs I am running. Any ideas what causes this? My IOS is Yosemite 10.10.2
    Kind regards

    Hi Japib
Thanks for your reply. Here is my report:

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked
Remember networks this computer has joined
    is checked.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
    3. Reset the PRAM.
    4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    7. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    9. Reset the System Management Controller.
    10. This step shouldn't be necessary, but has been advised by Apple Support in some cases, apparently as a workaround for a bug. Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences. If applicable, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner to unlock the settings. Enter your administrator login password when prompted.
Select the Power Adapter tab and uncheck the boxes marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    and
              Enable Power Nap...
if present. Then, if the computer is a MacBook, select the Battery tab and uncheck
              Enable Power Nap...
    11. Reinstall OS X.

  • Mac 10.6.8: click shut down from menu, it goes to sleep.

Hi there, I've just noticed this recently, that when I shut down my mac, I figure it has shut down, the sleep light doesn't flash so it looks good.
But when I come to turn it on in the morning, I press the power button, I realized that it's been in sleep mode all night.
I used the terminal and command force quit and it worked for that time but I'm still having problems.
    How do I fix this?

What did he tech say about a possible cause?  Run the hardware test which is on disc 1 of the System DVD that originally came w/your comp.  Post the results.
