Sleep/Wake problem

My 24" Intel iMac (10.5.6) is asleep and it won't wake up. I have tried another keyboard, in another USB port, and still no response. The sleep light is pulsing, and I quit all apps before putting it to sleep, I have even tried the power button, with no response.

It sounds like you will have to force it to power down. Press and hold the on button for at least ten seconds until the computer shuts down (you will know when). This is better than pulling the power cord as the hard drive has the opportunity to spin down slowly rather than 'braking' suddenly.
Analogy:
Stopping your car with gentle braking as opposed to stopping it with a tree.
Once you have it in a shut-down state there are number of things you can do. I would be inclined to look at the following thread first, as you may be suffering from what seems to be a common freezing issue amongst 10.5.6 upgraders using 24" iMacs:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1467276&tstart=0
If this is of no help, then it's the usual bunch of standard fixes (Zap PRam, single-user mode, PMU reset, booting from system disk and running disk repair).
I hope some of this helps... or points you in the right direction anyway.

  • SLEEP/WAKE PROBLEM on my Macbook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

    Greetings!
I love APPLE. So APPLE, please do try to help me out here...
The first problem I encountered was a faded translucent bluish/grayish rectangular line stretching from top to bottom suddenly showing up. I've shown this to our local APPLE technician and my LCD was replaced. Nice job here APPLE!
Now for the latest problem occurring as I'm writing this post. When I have my laptop fall into sleep, for say at least 5 minutes, and attempt to wake it up.. the user interface doesn't show up. The screen remains black and that pressing any key on the keyboard or clicking the mouse will automatically restart the laptop always (I do hope my internal hard disk won't be damaged from this reoccurring dilemma of mine). I've observed that this current problem started after my LCD was replaced.
Does anybody have the same problem as I have? If so, please do give me possible solutions for this? I've already talked with our local APPLE technician and told me that there might be some problems with the motherboard inside that may opening the laptop might be necessary.
Still... No worries APPLE (as of yet), I still love it even though it's my first time using such a wonderful invention of technology.

Hi. This is Fathom Graphis again.
Reading one of the threads that mentions an individual asking for help from an Apple certified technician with a problem that's quite the same as mine, I followed the instructions given by this Apple technician that there may be an application or some device activated in the "SHARING" folder (under *System Preferences*) that's causing the problem of the laptop not waking up and requiring hard reset to get back to the Mac OSX user interface.
So, I checked my sharing folder and found that my *"PERSONAL WEB SHARING"* option is activated (Under the SERVICES menu). I deactivated (unchecked) it and tested my laptop sleeping function by shifting the PUT THE COMPUTER TO SLEEP arrow to 1 minute and letting the laptop sleep for 10 minutes. After which, I moved the mouse and the MAC OSX User Interface came abruptly and the laptop didn't restart. I tested it again by letting it sleep for another 10 minutes and waking it up through mouse click and the MAC OSX User Interface showed up abruptly and the laptop, again, restarted.
So far, I'm still putting my laptop under observation. But I just want to inform everybody with their supposed respective SLEEP/WAKE problems on their Macbook pros (or Macbooks) that this may solve their issues (though I provide no guarantees, okay? I'm just a common user who happen to find a solution accidentally).
Still I want to address APPLE that certainly, letting your laptop sleep and waking it up and restarting itself after with the Personal Web Sharing activated (or checked under System Preferences > Sharing > Services) is indeed a "bug" that needs to be fixed. So hopefully, the people at APPLE would try to resolve such an issue as soon as possible (because, to my knowledge, sudden restarts of Hard Disks may cause data damages). God Bless You All.

  • Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013) sleep wake problems under Yosemite

    Hi,
Ever since I installed Yosemite on my MBP (details in the screen shot below), I've been getting Sleep Wake problems.  At night, I simply close the lid of the laptop, leaving all applications running, and in the morning I wake it up.  This worked fine under Mavericks on this laptop, but since Yosemite, every time I open the lid, I've had problems.  Initially, I'd open the lid and the machine would restore from what looked like a deep sleep (screen would get an alpha layer on it, and the little progress bar would appear, as though it's waking from the battery running out).  I ran Disk Utility, which found and repaired an issue on the disk (can't remember the details, unfortunately), and ever since then, when I open the lid, I have to hit the power button to get the machine going.  It restores in about 15 seconds (nice and fast), and it does re-launch all of the applications I had open, but the machine will also show a little system alert, indicating a "Sleep Wake Problem".  Each time I see it, I submit the issue to Apple.  Because I'm an idiot, I forgot to copy the crash log from this morning, but I'll do that tomorrow and append it to this thread.  Meanwhile, if anybody is having a similar experience and can isolate the cause, I'd love to know.  A few variables which might matter:
    * I have a Thunderbolt external hard drive which I use for Time Machine.  Each night, I eject the disk before shutting the laptop down (I bring the machine home with me each night).  My laptop used to have issues ejecting external disks, which I traced (thanks to this board) to an issue with attempting to put an external drive to sleep (I think that was the issue).  I haven't had any issues since that time.
    * The apps I have running all the time are Mail, Safari, Coda (text editor) and VMWare 8, which is running a Windows7 VM.  That's been my environment for years now, yet the sleep-wake issue only started since upgrading to Yosemite.
    Any help/advice is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi Ben,
Another sleep issue and adding to your post... My MacBook Pro (2.7ghz early 2011)
Leaving apps open and closing the "lid" and then going to bed... several times thru out the night my MacBook will start to wake up.  The optical drive spins up (DVD is in the drive), the hard drive fires up, I think i can see the screen glow ("lid" is still closed).   Then it sets itself back to sleep (must detect the closed lid).
Did not do this with Mavericks or other earlier OSs.
I have not begun to try to figure this out... today is the day!  lol.

  • Could AirPort Extreme be causing my Sleep/Wake problem?

I had not been able to wake my iMac G5 from sleep when touching the keyboard. Apple Genius determined there was no problem with the computer, so suggested I unplug all peripherals to try and isolate cause.
When I unplugged the ethernet cable from the Mac, the problem seemed to be fixed. (All other attachments did not affect problem.) I now have just the modem plugged into the Mac, and will see how the sleep/wake cycle responds.
But I'm wondering, has anyone else had a problem with the Extreme causing a power problem?
    Thanks

Never mind above as problem has also occurred with just the modem plugged in. Extreme is not the culprit. Still unclear as to what is causing it.

  • Ipod sleep/wake problem

    Hi There
i bought an2nd gen ipod second hand the lcd was cracked so opened it up to fix it done that then found out the sleep/wake button did not work so bought a new button flex but still did not work.
So i had a good look around and found a split on the wifi flex the bit that connects to the sleep flex so i have replaced the wifi flex to and it charges and starts up fine but the sleep/wake button still does not work.
So could it be any thing else?
    thanks

Most likely the problem is with your software. Just turn it on and restore it through iTunes if you haven't done so already. If that doesn't work, all I can say is to wait until the next version of 2.x.x comes out and see if problems persist. If they do, then you should probably call Apple and let them know.

  • Sleep/wake problems with j9 PPro10&WM2003

I'm currently developing an app on a pocket PC using WM2003.
My main headache is that if my app is running and the unit goes to sleep, sometimes it won't wake back up.
I can't determine any kind of pattern, it just seems to happen randomly.
I know that's kind of vague, I'm just hoping someone else has run into that problem and knows a workaround.
A more specific question I have is:
Does the J9 fire any events when the unit it's running on "wakes up"? I've tried some of the events available through the AWT, but nothing seems to fire when the unit returns from sleep.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  • Sleep wake problems with Yosemite update

I faced a multitude of issues with Yosemite 10.10. Following the 10.10.1 update, some of those were solved, but some still remained, namely those related to the Mail app, where mail server has to be selected manually. However, a new problem has arisen with the update: after going on sleep mode, the system does not wake, and needs to be rebooted. This happens every time, and makes me wonder about Apple's reliability, as it is starting to feel microsoft Vista like. Polishing the looks of the system is fine, bu doing so at the expense of performance, reliability and overall user experience is unacceptable. Looks as if a further update can not come soon enough.

  • Sleep/wake Problem with 15" MBP

    Hey guys,
Just recently, my MacBook Pro has been acting up on me whenever I open it to wake it from sleep. The screen will wake for about 2 seconds and then will go back to sleep. The only way to get the screen back is by hitting the button that lowers the brightness then I have to hit the brightness increase button to get it back to normal which is getting really annoying.
When I put it to sleep with the screen open by hitting the power button, it'll wake up perfectly fine. The problem only occurs when I take it out of sleep by lifting the screen.
Has anyone experienced this before and is it an easy fix?
    -Thanks

I just tried unplugging the charger and it comes awake with no issues at all, just comes up black when plugged in and have to use the brightness buttons to wake screen.....hmmmm
    Jchaves wrote:
I did a little searching before i posted and it seems like the trouble doesn't have to do with the laptop itself it has to do with some sort of glitch in Lion. The problem only persists when i have it plugged into the charger but when i carry it around and open it from sleep, it wakes up perfectly fine.
Does anyone know of any settings that i can change that can make this problem go away?

  • Does your eMac with Leopard have a sleep/wake problem?

My question is,does anyone with an eMac running Leopadd 10.5.8 have a problem waking the compiter after putting it to sleep for an hour? I am having this problem with my eMac after upgrading from Tiger which didn't have this problem. Thanks

    Hi, not here...
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: eMac
    Model Identifier: PowerMac6,4
    Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Processor Speed: 1.42 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.2f1
If it did OK in 10.4, then I suspect some 3rd party App or Extension.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Sleep/Wake problem in Vista Ultimate

I have no issue when I manually put the MacBook to sleep using the keyboard sleep or OS sleep function, but if I let the automatic setting do it, I can't ever have it wake up, nor does it really go to sleep as the laptop is warm when I touch it.

    hi z5,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
    Try Turning on Hybrid sleep,
Then Check if the wake will function properly now,
    Hope this helps

  • Powerbook g4 startup and sleep/wake problems

Right, here's my problem: Turning it on.... When it wants to! I press the power button and the white power indicator lights up, and stays lit, fans spin and thats it. Black display and nothing else. No startup chime or anything. (The power indicator should be off
when the machine is on, I know this, but stays lit.) Holding the power button gives a long tone and flashing power indicator and I think then it reboots giving the
startup chime, but again stays on a black screen with nothing else. Removing the battery, (with no power adaptor, holding the power (resetting PMU) then reinserting the battery and giving it a power supply does evenually allow it to boot but I have the same issue with it
every time I put it to sleep or shut it down! I have run the Apple Hardware test numerous times, even the extended test and it passes all tests.
I have tried resetting PRAM, NVRAM, applejack, repairing volumes (no repair required) repairing permissions, but to no avail. I have even installed OS X again using the supplied Apple CDs,
but half way though install (when it restarts) I have the same issue and had to attempt to get it to boot so it could finish the install.
When I eventually get it back on the clock is reset to
January 1970. (I presume this is because I reset the PMU.)
    Something is not right somewhere!
RAM installed, 512MB, 80GB HDD, 1.67GHz, 15" high rez, DL super drive.
Nice machine whilst its on, I'm typing on it now. I know for a fact it won't blooming turn back on though without a fight.
Any suggestions? (I am presuming it's either the PRAM battery or something to do with power managment seen as I'm on now, fine with a brand new battery and 65w AC adaptor.)
I have also read that holding down power button on startup makes it give a number of tones, it gives one, which apparently means bad RAM? RAM appears to be fine otherwise it wouldn't be on fine and dandy now?
    Strange one this.
Anything at all is most appreciated.
    Regards,
    Dan

ok there have been some advances.
    couple of things;
    1) my machine was putting itself in safe sleep (or deep sleep) i have now disabled this so it sleeps normally.
    2) lookupd has been hanging. (filtered 'hangup' in console:)

i think its got its knickers in a twist... this is with 10.4.2 (after i reinstalled os x). i then updated to 10.4.10 with the combo download after a fsck -fy, reset of pmu, nvram, and repairing of permissions. Now the hanging of lookupd seems to have stopped. well, at least now the process restarts if it does hang straight away, but it hasnt appeared for a while in the logs.
    fingers crossed.
    this make sense to everyone?

  • Airport sleep/wake problems on iMac Intel Core Duo

I have seen several posts with similar issues but I haven't found an answer yet that has worked for me consistently so I am going to restate the question. I have a 20" new iMac CoreDuo with 1Gb RAM and of course an Airport extreme wireless card. When the computer goes to sleep, first of all it often takes a very long time for it to come awake (on the order of 30 seconds - or more), then when it comes back the wireless connection is 1) either completely missing, in other words, the hardware can't even be found in system information or 2) the airport is detected, radio is on, but it can not find any networks to connect to. The only thing I have found to fix this issue is to do a hard reboot. I have done an archive and install, and have also deleted the system configuration folder multiple times. I have been on the phonw with Apple tech support and they have not helped beyond those two suggestions and the only reason they suggested them was because I forwarded them the posts on these forums that recommended them. Can anyone please suggest a fix for this issue? Assuming, of course, that it is not a case of a bad piece of hardware/firmware in which case I just have to wait for a new driver or take it in to the "shop".
iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   1Gb RAM

I have the exact same configuration and I haven't had this problem. I have noticed that the signal has no bars when waking from sleep, but then after a couple of seconds it automatically reconnects. Maybe it IS bad hardware. Have you isntalled any software that is network related (including widgets, drivers etc...) or do you have any drivers loaded... wireless printer driver, etc...
My profiler looks like this (sorry it's in italian but you could still compare the info)...look at the firmware, maybe it's different.
    Dati scheda AirPort:
Tipo di scheda wireless: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x89)
    Impostazioni internazionali scheda wireless: Universale
Versione firmware scheda wireless: 100.9 (3.120.28.3)
Network wireless attuale: Wireless and Free
    Canale wireless: 3
As a last resort, you could completely wipe the computer clean and reinstall the OS. This would eliminate the possibility of any 3rd party stuff interfering.

  • Laptop sleep/wake problems with 10.5.7

I installed the latest security update 10.5.7 this week. Since then I have been having numerous daily issues with my new macbook (2.1ghz).
    Problems encountered:
    - laptop not waking up completely. the display will show but it's like its frozen(keystrokes and mouse don't appear to do anything)
    - drives spinning but the display won't come up (I can see the actual screen very dim and using the brightness levels doesn't help)

  • MAC Mini late 2014 Sleep Wake issue

I just bought a MAC Mini late 2014 version with Yosemite pre-installed, and got a similar sleep wake problem.
It's connected to an ASUS IPS 27" screen using HDMI interface. When the Mac goes to sleep after 15 min, or when I press the button to force it to sleep.
If you type on the keyboard and the trackpad within 1 minute (before the screen also goes to sleep because of no HDMI signal), then the wake up will work.
If you wait till the screen goes to sleep also, then no matter how hard you pound on the keyboard or on the track pad, the MAC will not wake up.
The only way to wake it up is to power off the screen, then power it on again. Then type on the keyboard or move your track pad while doing that.
This is really annoying. I have to set to "Never" turn the display off to avoid this issue.
Called the Apple tech support who recommended I set up the energy saver like this below. But still could not fix the issue.
He told me to bring the Mac mini back to the shop to check.
I doubt it's a hardware issue. My theory is that this  could be a software bug that somehow
the setting of "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" is not in effect even if you turned it on in the power saver preference.
So, when the computer goes to sleep, there is no more HDMI signal, then the screen also goes to sleep.
And if "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" is not in effect, then even if you type on the keyboard, the computer will not wake up as the screen is asleep. The screen will not wake up as no HDMI signal comes from the computer.
This turns into a viscious cycle, or a deadlock. Nobody is waking up.
This is simple logic. I don't know why systems are designed to work like that. Just too annoying....
I hope apple can fix this software bug asap.
I did try to convert my HDMI cable to min-display port and try to plug that into the thunderbolt port to see if it helps.
The same issue appears. The only difference is, with the HDMI port, once I am able to wake up the computer by power cycling my screen, i will see that I am prompted with a login screen, even if I set up my computer to auto login.
but when I use the display port, when I managed to wake up the MAC, it bypasses the login screen.

Some updates on this. I tried two other 22" screen. Both of the seems to be working fine with sleep wake, but takes between 40 sec to one min to wake up after you typed something.
    Topcon hdmi 22"  screen
17 sec after keystrokes to turn wake screen
    40 sec to wake computer
    AOC  hdmi  22" screen
19 sec after keystrokes to turn wake screen
    38 sec to wake computer
I tried to switch to two other HDMI cables to see if it'll improve the situation of my original ASUS VX279 IPS HDMI screen.
But it didn't. Still never wakes up after it the MAC goes to sleep until you power cycle the screen.
I guess there is some hardware compatibility issue here.
Let me bring my mac mini to the shop to see if a replacement will help.
