Slideshow problems - dissolve transition - disabling Ken (sodding) Burns

After using iphoto4 for awhile, I had some problems with itunes and slideshows that I couldn't resolve. Finding a few bucks I decided to upgrade to iphoto 6 - big, big mistake. I use duplicates of my photos, then add or delete layers in photoshop, bringing in nice changes - usually names - by dissolving from one to the next. It worked very well. The photos now darken, even though I disabled/enabled/disabled the colorsync profile addition, and the dissolve from one slide to the next appears to darken, then lighten showing a very obvious and crude recreation of what was a seamless change in iphoto 4.
In addition, there is apparently no way to globally change preferences to the way slideshows are set up. Every slide show has to have the same changes made to the settings - disable Ken (%$#@#$) Burns - change the times and whatever the color sync problem is.
Does anyone know how these problems can be resolved?
Can iphoto 4 still be purchased? Does anyone want to exchange an iphoto 4 install disc for my iphoto 6 disc?
iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I was surfing cnet.com last night and ran into this link for iPhoto 4.0.3...
<imho> iDVD is much better at creating slideshows, a couple of limitations but the end result is often more accpetable...

  • Slide dissolve transition problem

I am having a problem with my slide show. I made a slideshow in DVDSP with iphoto jpeg photos. I set them to use the dissolve transition. I have my encoding preferences set to two pass 5mps (max 7mps) and built my disk. In the simulator everything looks o.k.
When I play the disk with the apple dvd player the following often happens. The slide will be transitioning to the next slide and once the new slide is fully there you can see in the background the first frame for the following transition. the duration is set to 5sec. So sometimes say when I have a portrait format photo in the black areas to the left and right you can see the first frame of the next transition 5 seconds before it is supposed to start.
Also the quality of the slide pictures seems very poor. Any suggestions for the transitions and quality?
    Thanks.

usually I have seen this occur with transitions in simulator and not on the burned disc. You might try creating a track from your slideshow, it should behave pretty much the same, though you'll want to use the slideshow editor first to set up your content, transitions, durations, etc.
You may be able to get better quality transitions by switching the final rendering preference in the menu pane of the preferences. This is described on pg. 115 of the online manual.
If you convert the slideshow to a track, the quality will be affected by the SD encoding settings instead.
    Hope this helps -

  • When i create a slideshow in iphoto using the ken burns effect it will not work in idvd. any tips please.

when i create a slideshow in iphoto with the ken burns effect it works fine. when i then transfer it to idvd it will not work. any tips please.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
how are you getting the slideshow into iDVD?
what size slideshow did you send to iDVD?
can you export the slideshow to the Desktop and play it with Quicktime Player there?
    what fixes have you tried?
how much free space on your boot drive?
Here's how you should create and sent a slideshow to iDVD from iPhoto:
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Have been using Premiere Elements for years and up to Premiere Elements 7 I have had no problem applying Dissolve Transitions or other Transitions in a very straight forward manner,  Since I moved to Premiere Elements 9 I can not get Dissolve Transitions to work at all.  Some of the transitions work as before but many give a problem
Tempted to move back to Premiere Elements 7.
Anybody had the same problem and able to resolve it.

    Billy,
    Welcome to the forum.
I'm with Steve on asking "what exactly is the problem?"
If you are having issues with a Cross-Dissolve only going to one Clip, and not spanning the Clips, or having Frames, that were edited out, showing up during the Transition, then take a look at this ARTICLE on Handles. Those (well, actually the lack, thereof) trip up many.
Good luck, and please let us know more,

  • Faulty Transitions (green screen) in burned DVD and no play on iMac

I made my first DVD with iDVD '08 this week and initially all seemed to be OK.
It contains 7 slide shows and 7 movies, total size 4.02 GB.
The problems I have since found are are :-
    1. The DVD will not play in my iMac 24", the menus judder or lock up, and the movies judder and skip. When I play the DVD in a real DVD player the menus and movies are fine.
    2. On the DVD player the slide shows are OK to start with, having the correct 'Dissolve' transition between sides. The problem is that after about 30 slides the transition is replaced by a green screen between slides.
When I view the DVD in iDVD it works OK, but not when burned.
I also exported a disc image and that also has the same transition issues, so it looks like iDVD is outputting faulty files.
I redid my DVD in a different theme and removed the slide transitions which reduced the DVD to less than 2GB, it seems to work OK now, but I would like to use transitions at some point!
    Ian

    Ian,
I made a project with only one "drop zone" slideshow by pulling 99 pictures from the media iPhoto window with dissolve transitions.
It failed with about a dozen green screen transitions in the end of the slide show.
I remove one picture reducing the count to 98.
It was good. No green screen transitions.
I saved as .img to eliminate disc problems.
I repeated the test for several themes especially 7.0s which others have found to be problems.
I tested all qualities and both ratios.
With my 20"iMac 99 pictures in one slide show fail, 98 and less work.
I don't understand why your project with slide shows of less than 98 pictures is not working.
Your total project was relatively large and could be a memory error. I suggest testing a smaller project, it won't drive you so crazy waiting an hour or more for each processing cycle.
There are certainly other concerns such as free disc space and RAM etc, and before the latest updates push from iPhoto to iDVD produced different results than pull to iDVD from iPhoto, etc.
History: the 99 limit was the reality that many DVD player will buffer overflow at more than 99 chapters (each picture is seen as a chapter). The original iDVD limited each slide show to 99.
Recent releases allowed as many pictures in one slide show 'drop zone' as desired.
I have been limiting myself to 99 so they will play on most DVD players.
The 99 number and info you quoted from Apple guidelines I find to now be wrong.
    They have a bug.
I suggest sending a bug report from iDVD.
I'm an engineer and I've been messing with this for a week trying to get a project out.
    Hope this helps
    Best wishes

  • Photo quality horrible due to dissolve transition

    Hi,
I am making a slideshow in Imovie for my son's baseball team. The pics I've shot are all super high resolution, but I inserted dissolve transitions between them and now the pictures are no longer sharp and have digitized edges. They looked great on the computer screen. When I burned it in iDVD they look horrible. Is there a transition that won't do this? The slide show is tomorrow and I am ready to scream. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello Jonathan!
Really nice photos! You, no doubt, have a much better eye than I do for details and such and it's no wonder that various compression artifacts would be more noticeable to you! Your photos look very acceptable to me.
The downside to the iPhoto-to-iWeb one-click automatic process is that you the photographer lose control over two things... the quality of resolution scaling and the quality of jpg (re)compression. Preprocessing of your images in something like Photoshop would definitely give you more control over these variables and would most likely allow you to see more acceptable images as posted online.
For your information, the max resolution for the Apple enhanced slideshows is 800x600. If you import a photo at any higher resolution, iWeb will take over again and resize and recompress your photo. So my recommendation to you would be to preprocess your images to make them look good at 800x600 and prevent iWeb from doing anything else to your images.
    I hope this helps.

  • Simple problem with transitions

    Hi everyone
I am having a small bit of a problem with transitions....
When I drag a clip from the viewer over the canvas to get the menu bar pop up, and select insert with transition ( cross dissolve ) it puts in a transition but its very short and too fast and when i select it and try to make adjustments it doesn't seem to let me make any changes to the cross dissolve.
I wander what i am doing wrong?
    Many thanks Tim

    Hi
Just as David Harbsmeier indicates. Handles
Transitions are handled differently in iMovie resp FinalCut.
    • iMovie - material that builds the transition is taken from the videoclips = the total length remains same
    • FinalCut (as pro- works) . You have to set of a piece of material in each end of the video clips.
This is called In- resp. Out-points. The remaining parts are called Handles
Transitions here are using material from these = Total lenght of movie increase
    per transition.
I find books/DVDs by Tom Wolsky - Very valubale - Enjoyed them very much.
    • Final Cut Express 4
    • Final Cut Pro 6 - DVD course (now probably version 7)

  • Secret for using Cross Dissolve transitions

Based on my limited experience, the most useful transition is the cross dissolve. It is pretty much the only one I use since it is doesn't draw attention to itself and bears repeated deployment for smooth scene changes. But it has a problem: If you simply make a clip split and put the transition in, it won't work. And it appears even high level people at Apple technical support don't understand what is going on. Based on the apparently incorrect background information they gave me, I have always been extremely careful about making the split precisely where the scene changes and then chopping off a small number of frames in order to make the transition work. But recently I discovered that cross dissolve transitions will always work (regardless of whether the frames on both sides of the cut are similar or even identical) if you delete precisely one frame, and it can be from either side of the split. When you do that the edges of the clip go from squared (right angles) to rounded. The cross dissolve transitions will never work between two clips that have squared edges. They will always work when the edges are rounded. And all it takes to get the edges to be rounded is the deletion one frame. The edges get rounded and cross dissolve transitions work and if you remove more than one frame, and/or do if from both sides of the split. The point is that it will work with as little as one frame. But if you don't sacrifice at least one frame, cross dissolve transitions will never work.
Of course, I am assuming that my experience with iMovie '09 and '11 is not idiosyncratic. Also: I would be interested in knowing if anybody else knew this "secret"--and whether it is widespread knowledge or in any of the books on iMovie.

When one splits clips, don't split close to what will be the beginning or the end of a shot. That's why you should always start the camera BEFORE the action begins and run AFTER the action ends. It only needs to be a 1/2 second to 1 second. Now before you add a cut or a transition you will automatically trim the end and the beginning of the two clips.
I start with a two-hour clip that includes hundreds of scenes, some ending abruptly, some not. If scene one suddenly ends and scene two begins, the natural place to make the cut is where the scene changes. If it happens that there is stuff immediately on each side of the cut that is of value, you would might prefer not to lose even one frame. Usually on one of the two sides the loss of one frame is not so bad. And if you sacrifice that frame you have almost everything you want. But it turns out that the situation is better than that. Since you can also add frames (I now realize), you can end without losing any frames at all. Of course, if you happen to be in a situation where there is plenty of useless stuff on both sides of a cut, the problem the solution is trying to solve does not come up. But I wouldn't change my filming habits just to avoid this problem of adding cross dissolves, since once you know what to handle it, it's not much of a problem. As to whether it is good practice to aim to have extra footage on both sides of a shot, sure. That seems like a good rule of thumb to me. But there are many situations where you don't have that opportunity. Say you were filming John Kennedy in Dallas or life among the Taliban or your kid falling off a horse. Life may not give you the chance to put useless footage at the end or beginning of your shot. In my case, I have hours of amateur home movies that stop at all sorts of odd places. I can't go back and reshoot it.
I suspect Apple simply expected you to do this. This will inherently eliminate what may be a tiny bug that you overcome by trimming 1 frame.
Most transition types don't require the removal or addition of a frame. When I called Apple technical support about this, the person I talked to was surprised by this feature too. And he found it happening with at least one other transition, I think. He handed me over to a specialist. That specialist gave me a complicated theory for why this was happening. He said that the frames on both sides of the cut had to look fairly different for the transition to work. And sometimes when we think we have made the cut exactly where the scene changes, we haven't in fact. So we need to cut away until both sides are definitely different. And you will notice that often the thumbnail for one side will be an image from the other side. This lead me to think that I was required to make sure that on either side of the cut there was definitely a significant change of image. But all you have to do is get the edges of the clip to become rounded. And you can do this by adding or subtracting a frame at any location. Of course, if you are going to be chopping off multiple frames for any reason, you will also solve or avoid this problem. So, if Apple was thinking what you suggest, they haven't given any guidance about it in print. And the tech support people don't seem to know it.

  • FCP won't add cross dissolve transition to clips

After putting two Quicktime clips into FCP, I attempted to add a cross dissolve transition in between the two clips. When I dragged the cross dissolve transition to the two clips, nothing happened. That transition had been used before, and as far as I can tell, nothing was different this time than all the previous times. For some odd reason, FCP refuses to add the transition to those clips.
Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas on what could have happened? More importantly, is there a way to work around this problem?
    Thanks!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

This is a problem when you do not edit down your raw clips and drop them into the timeline as they have been captured.
    The operative concept is 'handles'.
For transitions to work, you need enough unused footage AFTER the OUT point of first (outgoing) clip and BEFORE the IN point of the second (incoming) clip.
Drop the first clip into the Viewer and set an OUT point 30 frames or so from the end of the clip. Drop the second clip into the Viewer and set the IN point 30 frames or so past the beginning of the clip.
Now try to place your transition.

  • Problem bei transition

    Hi.
We have a problem with transition effects
When some transition is started , the screen begins to
    rapaint and in this
moment I change to another application through ALT-TAB the
    transition loops
unendlessly and the look of director-Application window is
    very "unclean"
(buggy repaint). When I change again to Director app, its
    window repaints
correctly and everything works fine. How can I avoid this
    situation?
    Thanx in advance
    Jorg

Have you disabled the animate in background projector option?
If you have to run in background some lingo script, perhaps
    calling a
function in the free version of buddyAPI xtra can determine
    when the
projector is in background, jumping to a non transition frame
    to avoid
    the artifact.
You can determine of the current frame has a transition ( the
frameTransition?) perhaps jumping to the following frame if
    at a
    transition.

  • "Persistent" audio in slideshow with Manual transitions

    What I want:
    Add music to a slideshow, which will loop as the slideshow plays;
    AND
    Slide duration = Manual
    WITH
    Dissolve transition.
    Is this possible?
When I add audio to a slideshow, the "Manual" option under the "Slide duration" dropdown grays out. I can arrow through the slideshow, but the transitions disappear and the audio skips around.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Scott
And welcome to apple discussions. As soon as you add an audio file to a manually advanced slideshow w/in iDvd'09, guess what happens?
It automatically becomes a fit to audio slideshow.
Can't do this within iDvd via the traditional approach of making a slideshow within iDvd only (sorry). I'm assuming you already know how to make a slideshow advance manually with dissolve as the transition.
Here's what I suggest if iDvd'09 is the only app at your disposal currently.
Workaround: Go ahead and make the manual slideshow normally (no audio). Now add any music files you wish to the dvd rom section of the dvd. If you plan to use the laptop as the presentation hardware connected to an LCD projector to TV out; then launch iTunes also from the music files contained within the dvd rom section and then go back to iDvd slideshow feature and play your manual slideshow as you wish while music loops in the background. In other words, you'll have to use iTunes and iDvd simultaneously to meet your objective as stated above.
If you'd like I can test this feature later w/in DVDSP.
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/dvdstudiopro/intuitive-design-environment.ht ml
Might take me a while to post the results though. Roxio Toast might also be worth looking into for slideshows.

  • Portfolio slidshow with dissolve transitions -iPad?

Looking for a good solution for my presentation portfolio -using an iPad. I am a photographer & retoucher. I specifically need to show before/after states of my retouching work. A clean, slow dissolve works best. But its important to be able to pause a "slideshow" to answer questions. Am planning to use an iPad for presentation. Any suggestions for application that will play reliably on iPad with my requirements? I do all my work in Photoshop & have created previous slideshows in Lightroom. But EXPORTED slideshows do not transition as well & I don't think LR will run on an iPad. (I don't have the iPad yet) My guess is that iPhoto will probably have to do the job by default, but I'm not a huge fan of that app.

  • Problems with transitions in 10.0.6

I just started a new project with 10.0.6 and have found two things. First I see they have removed the ability to set a transition on the timeline using the right mouse button. I have gotten used to doing it this way and now its gone. Now I have to move my hands and type command t. To bad I liked having it in the drop down menu. Also I found that anytime I set a transition between basic text on the time line and a video source I now get flashing during the transition even after rendering. I hope this magically goes away. Anyone else having these troubles. If so is there a fix.

If you updated FCPX .0.6 over 0.5, you might be experiencing some weirdness. The best practices from Apple, I believe, was incomplete.
Try deleting preferences first (and I almost never recommend this! http://digitalrebellion.com/prefman) I had to do a complete "fresh" re-install after completely deleting any traces of FCPX. (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5149)
For your first issue: the Basic Cross Dissolve is in the Effects browser under Dissolves. Just position the playhead either at the cut (up down arrows will position at cut edges) or over a clip (and the transition will be added at the front and back ends) or select several clips in the storyline -- and double click on the cross dissolve transition in the browser to add them.  [Getting used to typing Command T is probably marginally easier -- plus, now you can set your choice of default transition by right clicking on any transition in the browser and selecting Make Default from the popup.]
The Add Cross Dissolve is still available with right click ON A GAP... go figure...  By all means -- send Apple some feedback!
I am not experiencing your second problem. A basic transition from Basic text to a clip is smooth.

  • I am having problems with my music collection, after burning all of my music to the computer I organized it into folders and placed it in the iTunes Folder. Starting on a new computer now. I can get my music from old computer?

I am having problems with my music collection, after burning all of my music to the computer I organized it into folders and placed it in the iTunes Folder. As of now i realize this was a mistake. Starting on a new computer now. I cant get my music to transfer from the itunes folder on the old computer? I keep getting error "Can't Read from the source file or disk." Whenever I got to folder properties its always checked read only. But when i play the song it works just fine. Im sure this is just because I added music into itunes folder but is there anyway to fix it?

WMA files are 'window media audio' files, which is a Microsoft format. If you want to add them to your iTunes library on your Mac then you will need to convert them into a compatible format first. If you still have your windows machine then iTunes for Windows can convert them from WMA to MP3 format : https://discussions.apple.com/message/24158701#24158701
Or try a search for, for example, 'convert wma to mp3' to find programs to convert them.

  • Problem with users disabling ARD client service

I've got a problem and i'm not quite sure of the work around. I'm a PC guy by nature and can't quite figure this out.
I'm having a problem with users disabling the ARD service from the sharing menu. Unfortunately users need to have admin privleges to do their work so I can't simply give them a standard account.
I've hidden the ARD user account i created from the login window through Netinfo, but I need to find a way to stop users from shutting the ard service down.
They don't seem to understand that the company requires that it be on the computer. Now, I'm the one who is set as the admin for ARD in the building, however we really just use it to rollout drivers, install packages, and its a lifesaver for remotely fixing problems with programs. The company didn't really buy it to spy on the employee's.
Is there any way to hide the service from an admin level account? Or keep them from shutting it down?
BTW, this would have to be done on multiple machines running both panther and tiger.
Any help would be appreciated as I'm not quite sure where to start.

First, as a matter of policy, let them know this service is active, and needs to remain active. If they disobey this instruction and turn it off, you have a human resources issue, not a technical issue.
Second, there are very few enterprise users that need admin access to their machines. Oh, they ALL think they do, and there will be howling when non-admin status is first imposed, but we have 350 users in a publishing environment with less that 20 setup as admins. Those users are almost all superusers who assist others in a technical role.
We have far fewer software problems like this and with ARD, IT can install/ authorize installation of software remotely should a user need that. It simply does not dramatically impact our users to have non-admin access. On the other hand, we recognize that a FEW users will need more access, and grant that on a case-by-case basis.
