SLiM - how do I shutdown? [RESOLVED]

I'm using SLiM and my /etc/slim.conf includes the lines:
halt_cmd /sbin/shutdown -h now
reboot_cmd /sbin/shutdown -r now
My question is: how do I invoke these?  Once I've logged in and Gnome appears, I only get the option of 'Log Off' in the Gnome menus.  Furthermore, SLiM doesn't show any buttons or key presses to shutdown or reboot.  At the moment, I'm having to switch to a new tty, login as root and then invoke shutdown at the command line.  It's a PITA and I can't understand why /etc/slim.conf specifies the options but doesn't tell you how to invoke them (eg. after a logout).

Username: 'halt' or 'reboot'
Password: root password
(Or something like that)
Not sure about in invoking in GNOME, probably a missing daemon.
