Slooooooow to mount - slooooow menus.

I decided to format my new iPod Video for PC rather than for Mac so that I can share it between the two. However, in doing so, it is taking nearly an entire minute for my iPod to finish mounting on my Mac.
I also noticed when I unplugged my iPod and started using it scrolling through the menu and selecting a track was taking nearly 30 seconds for the song to load. Definitely not a normal. I previously had a 60 GB iPod photo and never experienced this issue. Originally I thought it might have something to do with my desktop Mac, so I connected it to my PowerBook and when I did, I experienced the same issue.
Any ideas? Is there something wrong with the Hard Drive in my iPod?

I think after I've backed up my music, I'll reformat my ipod to mac and see if it makes a diff.
I've tried formatting mine both ways and formatting it for Mac results in a noticeable improvement in speed all around. I was aware that formatting it for Windows would slow things down a bit but this is to the point where it's almost unusable.

  • Can't install Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro - DVD won't mount

I am unable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro as the DVD won't mount.  This is an early 2008 vintage MacBook Pro, intel core duo...
I'm using a OS X Snow Leopard install DVD (family licensed).  This DVD has been used to install 3 other Macs in my house without a problem (about a year ago), but cannot be used to upgrade my MBP.  Actually, this disk mounted on the MBP exactly once - inserted with system up, the disk mounted.  Upon running the installed (a year ago), the computer restarted but hung in boot.  After getting the disk ejected and the computer restarted, the disk would never mount again.  I've defered upgrade for a year but at this point need to upgrade my MBP at least to Snow Leopard and possibly Lion.
The problem doesn't seem to be with the DVD, since it continues to mount fine in other computers, and in fact a borrowed Snow Leopard DVD also will not mount on the MBP.
BUT ... the problem also does not seem to be with the optical drive in my computer, as it can read & mount the install/restore disks that came with the computer as well as other CDs and DVD ROMs.  Only the Snow Leopard install DVDs fail to mount.
I've also tried mounting the 10.6 install DVD on my Mac Pro desktop, making it available over the network (ethernet) with DVD/CD sharing.  I can mount the remote disk from my MBP that way, but when I launch the installer, the application launches (its own menus are displayed, I can quit from menu, for example) but does nothing -- no windows open, nothing.
I've also tried "Remote Install" (again with the DVD made available with the Remote Install MacOS X application on my desktop), but when I boot the MBP with option held down, the remote disk is not available as a startup disk.
Zapping the PRAM did not help.
Am off to the store to get an optical drive cleaning kit and a blank DVD big enough to burn a new disk image, but would appreciate any further ideas at this point....

Solution that worked: Copy the Install DVD to a USB flash drive and boot from that.

Up and running with Snow Leopard now and working on the updates.

  • [Solved] unable to mount harddisk partition or flash drive

After recent updates to gnome 3.4.2,i am unable to mount  harddisk partition or flash drive .I have 2 year old arch installation with gnome.
When i click on partitions in nautilus,it says "Unable to mount program files \n Not authorized to perform operation"
Problem is not only while mounting partitions.
Wherever we need authorization .Like changing date and time ,changing user accounts using gnome UI etc.The unlock button is greyed out permanently.
even i am not able to shutdown using gnome menus. it just log me out only ,do not restart or shutdown.Though i can shutdown using shutdown command on commandline.
i run gnome using daemon method. not through xinitrc .
    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/25031?p … ekit#close
I found a similar discussion in this bug. But since, i do not use xinitrc, it is unlikely they will help me.
Can someone be kind enough to help me on this?
    Thanks in advance.

  • [SOLVED] Two Grub boot menus on Macbook pro 7.1 efi boot

    Hello
This is my first Arch post and I feel a bit of a fool for making the error I'm going to describe but here we go....
A couple of weeks ago I installed Arch as dual boot on my Macbook pro 7.1 and I'm generally quite happy with the result.  I boot as EFI using Grub2 having followed instructions to make a standalone boot.efi and boot from the mac's bootloader. The boot.efi file is placed on a small macosx journaled partition that has been made bootable with "bless". I've been able to boot between the two systems using 'alt' at startup or, more generally, just leave the pc to boot into Arch.
When I generated the boot.cfg file I didn't specify ro or rw but grub added ro. So I've had the "root mounted as ro" warning since upgrading to 3.10.3-1 (I don't subscribe to the testing repository) although it was obviously an issue from the start and I was aware of it. After reading some of the forum posts today I thought I'd have a go at changing the boot parameters at startup and edit the boot menu to include rw. This worked and I didn't get the read only warning. I decided to try to generate a new grub.fcg and specify rw before generating a new boot.efi. On inspecting the new boot.cfg I noticed it had both ro and rw entries. I decided to think about what to do (thinking of removing the ro) before making the standalone file.
Anyway, I had to boot into osx for something else but when doing so noticed that I now have 3 efi boot options in the mac bootmanager. Two are grub and one boots osx. I've had a look in the forums and on the internet in general but can't find out how to remove the second entry. My guess is I've installed grub on my Arch /boot partition but can't figure out how to remove it.
Although I can boot into Arch as normal as the pc defaults to the original grub menu, I'd like to remove the additional entry if possible and would be grateful for any help.

These are the instructions I followed
    grub-mkconfig -o boot/grub/grub.cfg grub-mkstandalone -o boot.efi -d usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi -O x86_64-efi -C xz boot/grub/grub.cfg
    Then in osx:
    sudo bless --device /dev/disk0s4 --setBoot
I think that on initial installation I ran the command above as one and then last night ran it as two. Like this:
    grub-mkconfig -o boot/grub/grub.cfg
    grub-mkstandalone -o boot.efi -d usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi -O x86_64-efi -C xz boot/grub/grub.cfg
    The instructions were from:
    http://codylittlewood.com/arch-linux-on … tallation/
    From the apple discussion forums..
This one is a bit more tricky, surely there is another way but this one is simple and not so risky
1- burn a GParted Live CD iso
2- boot on the GParted live CD (press alt on boot and wait for the CD boot option to appear) and choose the first boot entry
3- during the boot process accept every option with its default value
4- in GParted select the EFI partition and somewhere in the menus select the "flags" entry and uncheck "boot"
5- exit GParted Live CD and boot in Mac OS
    6- a new volume has appeared "/volumes/efi"
in the finder go to "/volumes/efi/EFI" and delete the "ubuntu" folder
7- repeat steps 2/3 and step 4 but check "boot" instead of unchecking it
8- exit GParted live CD and reboot
I have found the instructions above on the apple discussion forums but as noted above I'm a little wary about following them. I guess though that I need to remove the entry in the mac EFI partition which is hidden in osx but shows as sda1 in Arch.
Do you think I could mount sda1 in Arch and have a look at what's on there? From the instructions above it looks like there should be a directory  for Arch that could be deleted. I presume that Arch is booting from the blessed partition on sda4. Is this correct?

  • Internal Hard Drive Not Mounting

    Hi,
I've recently had a problem with my 2009 Mac Pro 8 core. One of the internal drives didn't mount or show up in any of the menus/disk utility. I tried moving the drive to another bay and it then mounted correctly. I installed other drives in the same bay and none of them show up so I presume there is something wrong with that particular bay.
I have a feeling that a trip to the Apple Store is needed but as I'm not particulary weathy at the moment I was wondering if anyone had had any similar problems. I've read on another thread that sometimes the connection to the motherboard/power can come loose but the information on finding it and plugging it back in properly was for a Mac Pro 1.1 (different internal layout).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    J

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I've finally managed to pick up some compressed air and have a look as you suggested. Doesn't seem to have made a difference though.
I guess I'll have to pop it into Apple for them to have a look.
    Thanks anyway

  • RAID won't mount until 20 minutes have passed

Every now and then I'll have a crash on my G5.
If I have to force quit through menus or manually through power my RAID won't mount after the restart.
The RAID is a striped 5 hard drive set at RAID 0. After some turning on and off of the RAID and plugging it back in, the drives appear on Disk Utility, but not the RAID image. After the drives appear the RAID waits 20 minutes until it mounts the proper way.
Any help on what is causing this?
    Thanks!

I suggest you check any drivers there may be for the eSATA card and also the firmware for the card.
RAID is a CoolGear 5 Bay PLCD
Created through Disk Utility on MAC OSX 10.5.8
Not having created a RAID using Disk Utility I am not sure if running it to 'Verify Disk' will adequately check your RAID but hopefully someone else will post re that.
It's been a few years, 5 maybe, doubt the warranty is still on.
90 days, they're having a laugh. That is the worst warranty I have ever seen for a RAID. I have seen cheap printers with a better warranty than that. I was expecting 3 years at least and maybe even 5

  • Some of my scenes selection menus won't turn or play sound.

My main menu and the first scene selection menu has motion and sound, but the rest of the scene selection menus do not turn or play sounds (music).  How can I get them to work?

First create a disk image of the project and see if those menus work as expected when played with DVD Player on your Mac.  If they do then the problem lies in the burning process.
Follow the workflow described below to help assure the best quality disk possible:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • External HDD (vfat) being mounted ro after pacman -Syu update

    Hi all,
I just updated my laptop using pacman -Syu which didn't throw up any errors, but now my external hard drive mounts as Read Only when I plug it in.
I'm using Gnome desktop. This hard drive has worked fine for months. If I add 'rw' to the volume options field, it comes up with "unknown option" or "invalid option" (can't remember which) when I plug the drive in.
The drive is formatted vat (so I can use it on Windows too) and I can mount it manually fine. What's changed with the update that makes it mount ro?
    Any help would be great

  • How to play DVD without menus?

Hello, I'd like to burn a video clip that I cut in FCE onto a DVD without having to use iDVD and without using any menus. Basically, I want the video to play immediately (once I put it in a DVD player. Any ideas?

    Hi
without having to use iDVD and without using any menus.
    A. No movie editor FC E or P - or - iMovie can deliver what's needed to make a DVD
without any program preparing the needed code - sort of .mpeg2
    B. DVDs without menu can be done in several ways with eg
    • Roxio Toast™ - that can do this without any faking what so ever
    • iDVD - but You have to fake part of it
iDVD - my list on this
    from. Klaus1 in Somerset, UK
How to create a DVD in iDVD6 without menu (there are several options)
    1. Easy. Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously.
Disadvantage. The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy. If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well).
Disadvantage. The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time. Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage. One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software. Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn.
Disadvantage. you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way". Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary. myDVDedit ( www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager.

Most certainly more will fill in - this list is a bit old.

  • I cannot get my hard drive to mount on desktop

Today I had to erase my internal (start-up) hard drive and reinstall Mountain Line (ML) and although the reinstall seems to have occurred correctly - the iMac will now start up and run properly - the icon for the internal hard drive does not appear on the desktop along with the other disk icons.  When I hold the option key down during start-up the Hard Drive icon shows up among the other drives attached to my Mac - but the icon or image of the internal hard drive does not appear on the desktop.  I tried to use Disk Utility to mount the disk, but even though the disk is listed and shown in the left most column of the Disk Utility window - the drive will not mount on the desktop
I seem to remember that the same thing happened when I originally installed Mountain Line on this machine - and after poking around in countless menus I found an option that when selected caused the internal hard drive to mount on the desktop just fine.  But I've not been able to find that option thus far with the newest version of ML.  And a search of the "Help" system was useless.
Can anyone shed some light on the resolution of this problem?
    Thanks

Finder - Preferences - General - click the boxes you want for "Show these items on the Desktop"

  • Created a disk image for a DL disc but no menus appear when it is burnt

I told my iDVD project to 'burn' a DL Disc image and burnt the image with Disk Utility. The iDVD project preview shows all of the required menus etc.. BUT the burnt disc does not, neither does the image file if mounted and opened with DVD player. This is very strange - can anyone shed light on it for me?

    Hi Neville Neale
Welcome to apple discussions. Perhaps you inadvertently made an "autoplay dvd." But then again sometimes iDvd will default to Autoplay. Hard to tell without being at the computer in which you authored the dvd. I suggest you launch iDvd and then take a look within Map View. If you happen to see a movie in the very first or top box, then simply select it and hit the Delete key. Now preview the dvd again. Should play as expected with menus and all. But if not just come on back.

  • What can I do to stop high network usage when a Samba share is mounted?

Ok, so i've done a lot of googling on this, but i've not really found any conclusive answers.
Basically, when I mount a samba share from another machine, Lion goes crazy. I can see from iStat menus that network (wireless) usage varies wildly from 300KB/s, right up to 6/7 MB/s, but my cpu usage doesn't spike at all. When this is happening the laptop is almost unusable, clicking something can take 30 seconds for a response. I'm presuming that this is something to do with Spotlight trying to index the share, but as it's several terabytes in size, it never completes. I've left the laptop on overnight in the hope that whatever process is causing this would finish, but to no avail. I've also placed the share in the Privacy tab in Spotlight's preferences, and used mdutil -i to stop it accessing the volume, but with no luck.
Can anyone help? It's driving me nuts and it means i can't access my files without having to ftp in instead.
    I'm running 10.7.3

Unfortunately, your description of the problem and the placement of both your main and AirPort Express routers does lend itself to believe the problem is most likely Wi-Fi interference. If it isn't the microwave or portable phones, it could be obstacles like walls between the routers that may be preventing the stream from consistently reaching the Express.
In your configuration, the stream will first travel to the main router, and then, from the main router to the AirPort Express. If, for example, you started the stream in the same room as the Express, that stream would have to travel across several rooms at least twice.

  • Ipod photo won't mount to itunes - please help me!  i'm desperate!

    Hey everyone,
Thanks in advance to whomever reads this and answers... I've been fighting with my ipod for over 12hrs now (over 3 days) and am VERY frustrated!
    here are my details:
    20 gig ipod photo
    Windows XP
    itunes 7
    Problem:
itunes told me it needed to be restored. So, I went through the process, but when I plugged it back into the computer (after plugging it into the wall socket), I found that it won't mount in itunes! BUT, I can see it in Windows explorer.
    Have tried:
    - changing disk drive
    - uninstall, reinstall, reinstalling from CD (with old version)
    - restore (when it was coming up in itunes)
    - different usb ports
    - fiddling with resets and disk mode
    Things to note:
    - in Windows Explorer it now comes up as IPOD instead of VANESSA'S IPOD. I don't know why!
    - when I plug it into the computer it seems completely happy - it's charged, is flashing the do not disconnect... everything normal! And, when it's not plugged in, I'm able to browse through the menus like normal - the only problem really appears to be that itunes won't recognise it.
I kind of feel like I've been trying a lot of different things, and maybe not in the right order? It feels like something really small that I'm missing...
If you have any ideas or suggestions, please please PLEASE let me know... as I said, I'm desperate...
    cheers

  • How to keep an internal drive from being mounted on startup?

Other than opening the box and disconnecting them physically, how do I keep an internal drive from being mounted at startup? I have two problems:
    1) despite having an SSD drive marked as the startup drive, I think one of my other drives is being considered first - startup takes a long time and it shows the gray circle with a line through it, before acquiescing into booting (rapidly and nicely) from the SSD drive. How do I make it ignore the other drives and go right for this?
    2) when the system boots up, if I don't immediately dismount the internal drives (which I don't need most of the time), Time Machine and Spotlight begin going over them.
other than physically removing them, anything I can do in some OS X boot script to keep those drives from being mounted?

Ok, I followed your directions (including de-seleccting and re-selecting the SSD as boot disk from System Preferences). Console: there was nothing under System Diagnostic Reports, but here's what the All Messages logs said after the Boot_Time that demonstrated my issue (3 min wait, then gray circle with a line through it, then finally rapid boot off the SSD). Is there anything here that shows what the heck it's doing before it actually boots off the SSD?

  • IDVD movie menus created sometimes...

I have prepared some video files in iMovie. In some of them I applied chapter markers. I bring them in iDVD and some of them when I insert them in the menu, create another menu specific for that video file, that has the options "Play Movie" and "Scene Selection". However, there is no specific pattern on how these extra menus are created... Some of the movies that have chapters, create the menu, and some don't... I really don't want this extra menu, I just want to click on the movie and play, whether it has chapters or not. I even tried from the DVD map option to find some solution, but the movies that have this issue are like broken down to smaller movies, one for each chapter... How can I avoid that?

    Then why add chapters?
    (From fellow poster Mishmumken: )
How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
    1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
Lee's DVD Imager:
    http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html
Our resident expert, Old Toad, also recommends this: there is a 3rd export/share option that give better results.  That's to use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option.  Then in iDVD go to the Media Browser and drag the movie into iDVD where you want it.
    Hope this helps!
