Slow Mac Book late 2008
Hi All,
My wife has a late 2008 Mac Book 13" it has 45.06GB free memory (after i got rid of a lot of unwanted apps etc..) There is 65GB of the 'Other" on the hard drive, basically everytime she opens anything we get the pin wheel and everything opens really slow, I have run disk utility and we had some issues that were repaired upon further testing.
I ran it again today as it is painfully slow and we have some SUID files come up quite a lot infact all seem to be language files maybe as they all have either Japanese Italin in the link etc..
Im not sure where to go next as I have deleted and backed up a lot of unwanted Mpegs and Movie files freeing up space, any other suggestions would be great, unfortinatly she doesnt have the original CD it came with either
Many Thanks Guys!
See this FAQ on how to manage the pin wheel.

Latest recommended OS ? That can go on mac book late 2008
Please, Where can I find out for certain what the Latest recommended OS that can be installed on a late 2008 MacBook serial number W8*****1AQ? I would like to use adobe creative cloud which I understand requires Mac OS 10.7 currently I have OS 10.5.8 on the MacBook. Any direction / links would be appreciated!
<Personal Information Edited by Host>Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
and in the UK:
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
Xserve (Early 2009)
iCloud system requirements:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
or Mountain Lion:

Mac Pro Late 2008 Slow Internet
Hi,
I have a problem with my Mac Pro Late 2008, version 3.1.
I Have an High Speed internet connection 60mbps download and 10 mbps Upload.
I Have a Gigabit Routeur with a Gigabit Switch, and a proper cable setup made by a professional.
So here's the problem.
My Mac Pro cannot not acheive to get the 60 mbps speed in any way. the max that i can get is 20 mbps.
Here's what i tried :
With the same ethernet wire, i plug in 5 differents mac with different versions of OSX (2 Macbook Pro Retine, MacBook Pro 15", Mac Mini, MacBook Pro 13"), they all get the 60 MBPS speed.
With the same wire, i tried the 2 differents network plug on the mac pro.
All those test have been made with only this mac pro plugged into the Switch, so no other computer are using the Bandwidth. And the routeur reset to be sure it will give a new IP adress and forget all the other computer and devices.
I've tried different DNS on my mac pro, Google, OpenDNS (paid subscription), My internet provider.
I've reset the PRAM of my mac Pro
I've reset the SMS of my Mac Pro
I've done the test with 10.5.x, 10.6.x, 10.7.x, 10.8.x and 10.9.x
None of those procedure worked.
The only way that i finally get to have the 60MBPS is to plug the mac directly to the Cable Modem of my provider, without any routeur or switch, and you can understand, that's not a livable option.
So I don't what else to do, is anyone ad the same problem?
Here's the Specs :
Nom du modèle : Mac Pro
Identifiant du modèle : MacPro3,1
Nom du processeur : Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Vitesse du processeur : 3 GHz
Nombre de processeurs : 2
Nombre total de cœurs : 8
Cache de niveau 2 (par processeur) : 12 Mo
Mémoire : 18 Go
Vitesse du bus : 1,6 GHz
Version de la ROM de démarrage : MP31.006C.B05
Version SMC (système) : 1.25f4
Numéro de série (système) : NQ******200
UUID du matériel : ****
<Edited By Host>I'm using Speedtest.net to mesure my internet connection.
My local connection seem to run at gigabit speed. If i copy a very large file from my Mac pro to my MacMini Server, it take the same time as if i copy the same file from my macbook pro retina (wired connection of course, thunderbolt to ethernet adapater).
I don't really know how to mesure the Bandwidth, near changing the node. -
HT201364 What is the change betwen mac book late 2006 and mid 2007 ?
What is the change betwen mac book late 2006 and mid 2007 that couses the OS X Mavericks not to run on it?
Neither the 2006 or 2007 MacBooks will run Mavericks, nor will the white plastic cased 2008 models. The oldest MacBook that will run Mavericks is the Aluminum case Late 2008 one.
Looking at the specs, I think that is because prior to the aluminum 2008 model, all MacBooks used less powerful Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) graphics processors with (at most) 160 MB of available video memory. AFAIK, neither Intel nor Apple ever released 64 bit drivers for these GMA graphics processors, so when OS X dropped support for booting into 32 bit mode in Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) that meant the newest OS these MacBooks could support was Leopard (OS X 10.7), the last version to support 32 bit mode.
It is also likely that the GMA's, with their limited memory & support for parallel processing, can't effectively support technologies like Grand Central Dispatch that system services in the newer OS versions increasingly rely on to speed up more than graphics rendering.
So, even if one could find a 64 bit driver for the GMA's, the system probably would be too slow at too many things to be practical. (Personally, I have a while 2008 MacBook, & I think the "best fit" OS for it is Snow Leopard. As far as I'm concerned, Lion is basically a beta version of Mountain Lion with too many rough edges & limited user choice to run on mine.) -
HT203254 mac book pro 2008 with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor...
Hi,
I just want to know if my mac book pro 2008 15" with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor can be changed or repaired? My Mac doesnt have display on it...Sometimes it shows up...but after a while its black screen again..tnxIt's a little late for me to jump into your discussion, I only read it when I posted an issue with the same model.
Well, I hope you got it fixed soon enough in 2012, because as I learned in the past few days after purchasing that model and reading up on the issues, Apple stopped the care for this fault on December 7th or so in 2012.
Seeing that people still get problems due to that graphics card, I should try to return the used one I just bought. I might run well now, but who knows how long. -
Mac Pro Late 2008 1GB LAN Problem Yosemite
In work i have 20 Mac Pro Late 2008 and 5 Mac Pro Early 2013 all connected to server with 1GB LAN speed so all work on 1GB speed
All Mac Pro users connect to server folder for work
I found one **** of annoying problem
i did speed test using "LAN Speed Test" for writing and reading purpose on same folder they use in the server since users with Mac yosemite complains of slowness while they work
In the machines running OS X 10.8.5 i run LAN Speed Test and it gives writing 1GB and reading 1GB
In the machines running OS X 10.10.2 i run LAN Speed Test and it gives writing 100MB and reading 1GB
I was confused so i test on all machines with mac yosemite and they show all the same results
so i took my MacBook Pro Mid 2009 running OS X 10.10.2 and plugin the LAN cable from machines running OS X 10.8.5 (since they show 1GB for R/W) and run the test again ..... i was shocked that it gives me the same results 100MB writing and 1GB reading
Formatted my MacBook Pro to OS X 10.9.5 and it gave me same problem, then formatted to 10.8.5 and it gave me 1GB R/W
Now im 1000% sure its OS X 10.10 & 10.9 problem
Is there any solution regards this problem since i googled without results?I know the difference of MB/s and Mb/s heres the test for you

SLOW Mac Book Pro help appreciated.
Hello friends. I was searching the forums for help to understand why my Mac Book Pro is suddenly so slow... I found and ran etreCheck... so I'll copy and paste it here... the one item in read was that time machine is not configured.... anyway, here you go:
Problem description:
A few weeks ago, my Macbook pro started running slow… the spinning icon just keeps spinning… it takes so much longer to restart my computer now… 10+ minutes… more than 1/2 of my hard drive is free…
This problem is more evident when I go to close a webpage or program or when I sync Itunes.
Thanks, G

Mac Book Pro 13" Late 2010
Mac OsX 10.6.3
Problem:
Opening FInder Windows and genral activity on the Mac has become incredibly slow. Opening a Finder Window by clicking on the FInder Dock Icon can take anywhere up to 6 seconds, and a ll I see is the spinning beach ball while I wait.
The Mac was running Osx 10.6.8 but I reinstalled the Os from the original install CD's and which meant I downgraded. The Mac worked fine for about two hours and now slow down has started again. I have been trying to update the Os to 10.6.8 but now the Finder keeps freezing, nothing but the beach ball of death.
The computer will operate fine of a USB HD running Lion.
I have Verified/Repaired Permissions
Verified/Repaired the HD - the HD showed no errors according to Disk Utility
Cheked the SMART statued of the HD, and it Verifies okay.
Reinstalled the HD
Created a new User Account
Scanned the computer with ClamXav and found no malitious software
Note this mac has had the Motherboard replaced under warranty twice, the last replacement was in May, the computer has been used for noting except web browsing and email since then.
Coincidentally my friend's Mac of the same vintage and Os is having a very similar problem.
Any pointers? After an hour the back ball came back again. Opening Safari or even a Finder window would cause the Mac to freeze.
I have reased the HD and reinstalled Os 10.6.3 from the original DVD, then updated to 10.6.8. The computer lasted about 4 hours before the same problems came back again.
I tried to install Os 10.7.0 from an Apple Installer USB. The Installer said there was a disk error and couldn't complete the Installation.
I ran disk utilities however it found no problems.
I erased the HD again I reinstalled 10.6.3. and then tried to Install 10.7.0 but received an error massage, "The installation could not be completed, please try again".
I tried to update the Os to 10.6.8 but the update process stalls at about 50% .
The computer now freezes in beachball mode after about one minute of booting.
Next I will try to swap HD's and see if that works. -
Slow Mac Book Pro with Maverick Software
I have a Mac Book Pro Mid 2009 model. Ever since I have loaded Maverick software my computer has been very very slow. Is there anyway to speed up the processor or revert back to Mountain Lion software? This is really making me a disgruntled Mac user and I have always been a real supported of Apple products. Suggestions would be appreciated.
Hello!
I'm new to forum but I am experiencing the same problem with '09 Mac Book Pro. New installed Mavericks worked quick at first but suddenly everything slowed down and the whole system seems to be lagging and it's not very responsive. I have upgraded from Mountain Lion and never had any problems. I can understand that the machine is 5 years old but it's not very dated and should be supported buy apple in their new upgrades. However for now I would like to bring my laptop to life and wondered if there is any way to find out what is slowing down the machine or would I be better going back to my previous system?. Would Apple Genius team be able to help me with this issue?
I'm desperate to get it working. -
WiFi on 10.7.1 Mac Pro late 2008
I have a mac pro that is a late 2008 model. I have installed 10.7.4 and 10.7.1 on seperate hard drives. However neither one seems to recognize the airport card. Is there an update I need or setting to change? Thanks.
On the old 11 Mbits/sec "original" Airport, aka 802.11b, there were 11 channels for data, and your Router could use any channel. For Single-band 54Mbits/sec 802.11g or 802.11n, there are now only three usable channels. Based on the old numbering system, these are channels 1, 6, and 11. Signal spills over into the adjacent two channels up and two channels down to fill the entire spectrum.
You can sometimes shoehorn your signal in by manually setting in-between channels, but results vary widely.
6 nearby Routers will eventually change channels until there are two on every useable channel, and that will fill the entire spectrum with competing stations, all trying to talk at about the same time.
A Dual-band Router (and dual-band Airport extreme card) can switch up to a different frequency band when things get crowded, and can operate on higher-numbered channels: 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 100, 104, 108, 112, 116, 120, 124, 128, 132, 136, 140, 149, 153, 157, 161, 165
This is what my report looks like, and I DO have an Apple Airport card installed: -
Hi,
I'm leaving in Rio - Brazil. I intend to go to Orlando on September, 27 of this year! A display of my notebook MAC BOOK PRO 15" 2007 is broked.
I intend to bring with me to fix it at Apple Florida Mall store. I would like to know:
1) How long time to fix it?
2) May I upgrade my notebook OX software? I cannot loose all of my informations inside in the HD. I cannot acess those information since last year, when broked.
3) How much is to put a new display?
4) How much to upgrade my notebook software OX?
Thanks,
ArthurSome folks can't leave well enough alone, and insist on downloading all sorts of additional "stuff" that ends up making their Mac unstable.
Standard Mac OS X on properly-operating Hardware does not crash, unless you start installing too many add-ons.
You can run "just the basics" by holding down the Shift key at Startup. This does one pass of Disk Repair, then loads a minimal set of extensions, and comes up in Safe Mode. If it works OK that way, but crashes in "regular", it's the add-ons.
There ia another layer of add-on junk that can be added to Safari. If the only remaining problem is Safari crashing, those add-ons can be disabled as well. -

Hi, just wanted to start with saying thank you to the people who take their time to voulonteer their skill with computers!
I have read some of the other desscussions and am humbled by those who clearly know what they are talking about and are freely sharing their knowledge. makes me want to be the same in my trade. thanks
now, here is my ETREcheck
have not really done anything to my macbook since I got it, and recently it has been noticably slowing down.
Also, not sure if this has anything to do with anything, but if i click "command-t" to open a new tab in safari the screen kindof glitches... dont know what it is, not sure if its a consern

VERY SLOW Mac Book Pro after Mavericks update...
I have recently updated my MacBook Pro to Mavericks and everything is slow. I use IMovie and my computer freezes. What should I do?
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help to identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the state of the system that may be pertinent.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: You copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, proceed anyway.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script. It does nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to be cautious about running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The script will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but it's really a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user, and the affected user is not an administrator, then please run the script twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The administrator is the user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time. If you can't log in as an administrator, just run the script as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
clear; PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/ /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PC () { o=$(egrep -v '^[[:blank:]]*($|#)' "$2"); PR "$1"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; }; a=$(id | grep -w '80(admin)'); [[ "$a" ]] && sudo true && r=1 || r=; { [[ "$a" ]] || echo $'No admin access\n'; [[ "$a" && ! Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately, leaving the Terminal window empty. If that doesn't happen, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter your password, the script will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important, so don't worry about it.
The script may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window.
You can then quit Terminal. The output of the script will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V again.
Please note:
☞ This procedure is all copy-and-paste — type nothing in the Terminal window except your login password if and when prompted.
☞ Remember to post the output. It's already in the Clipboard when you see "[Process completed]" in the Terminal window. You don't have to copy the output; just paste into your web browser.
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary. -
