Slow Performance Weeks after Encryption

I encrypted my organization's laptops several weeks ago and did not return them to users until after I could tell by device performance that the bulk encrypting task had completed. I have two users that are experiencing extremely slow performance on their systems. When the users are typing anything like a Word document, upon each keystroke they see the Windows 7 "circle" icon at the mouse cursor. This seems to come and go several times over the week, and every few days we are getting a request to resolve the issue but after restarting the behavior may not act up anymore.
I found a TID suggesting to change HKLM\SOFTWARE\Novell-FDE\Parameters\ThrottleEncryption to a lower level like Idle or BelowNormal. Is there anything else that I should also try? Thanks!

Yes, but nothing from Novell yet - I will keep pushing them forward and let you know if I get some results.

Sounds like you have a SR going on this also. Have you heard anything on a
fix? Mine has been stagnant for a while and I just bumped it to see if
anything has been figured out or if more info is needed from my side. Hope
to here something soon. This is a pretty severe problem especially when it
happens multiple times to a machine.

Hi,
We have had (maybe) similar issues with our FDE setup that FDE policy
assigned devices tend to loose the policy and start to do disk decryption
and suddenly get once again the policy back and start to encrypt again. This
could be found from "ZCM agent, Full disk encryption, about, Agents status,
Settings, on section "Emergency Recovery Information" you could see events
'Zone Changed' what according to Novell support meant that the policy was
"re-initialized / changed" even our policy counter have not changed = policy
got lost in some phase.
We are now suspecting that there is some issues with the policy service that
plays tricks on us.

In ZCC on the devices that you are having issues with look at the Emergency
Recovery tab and see if you have multiple listings in here that corresponds
to the slowness. If so your devices are decrypting and then re-encrypting.
Your mention of being asked to reboot leads me to believe that is what is
happening to you.
I have had a few SRs going on this one for a while and it got bumped to
backend but no info in a month or so.

  • Macbook pro very slow few weeks after Mavericks update

    Hi,
Please I am in need of assistance. I have noticed some significant performance degradation after my OS upgrade. Slower system, spinning wheels, hanging and once crashing and restarting. I used to be able to run many apps simultaneously while zipping along. These days not so much.
I have run an etrecheck (following the example found in some other discussions). Please see output below. Any suggestions or advise is very welcome:

  • Mavericks is unbelievably slow, several weeks after upgrading

I usually love all things Apple/Mac, but I am very disappointed with Mavericks.  Every program, app, task, anything at all, is running very slow.  I'm gotten the pinwheel since beginning to type this sentence, and nothing else is open on my computer.  My computer ran great before the upgrade, and abysmal every since. It is not the updating of spotlight, that was completed weeks ago.  Just a few things:
--no new programs have been installed since the Mavericks update
--kernal_task is taking 103% of the CPU.  And nothing else is open!
--the computer won't find a wireless network after being awoken from sleep!
--if you put the computer in sleep and lock mode, you wake up the computer AND unlock it for public access by turning your mouse off!
Anybody else thoroughly disappointed with Mavericks?
Is there a way to roll by Mavericks and go back to the old OS?  I'm looking at the forums and people who installed Mavericks 7 months ago are having massive performance issues.  It doesn't seem Apple is taking these concerns seriously since here we are 7 months later with no upgrade/patch to fix it.
And does anybody have any ideas on what to do about this kernel_task problem?  The computer is unusable.

assI'm having the same problem.  Here are my stats from EtreCheck.Mavericks is unusable for me.

So, about a week ago my macbook pro started having lots of issues: wifi connectivity, slow performance, sound issues, spotlight wasn't working. After going through the issues with apple support, they decided the best course of action was to erase the hard drive and do a reinstall. Since I have a recent backup this seemed like a good enough option. They were kind enough to send me a copy of the snow leopard disk to do the install since we couldn't get it to complete through the disk utility. Not sure why, since it says we are fully connected, it just never completed.
Anyway, so now that you have the background here is the new issue. The macbook pro keeps spitting out the disk I'm trying to install from. Disk utility and using the 'Startup Disk' function from the apple menu doesn't read the disk.
Can anyone suggest a solution to this vexing problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Jeremy.Laurin,
have you tried agb76’s approach here?

  • Mac OS slow performance after bootcamp installation

So, I've been searching around here and on other forums, but I haven't found a solution yet to this problem and wanted to see if others knew of it. The problem is that the performance on Mac OS seems to have degraded when I have bootcamp (with WIndows 7, 64bit) installed. I've gone through uninstalling and reinstalling bootcamp a couple of times now and the result always seems to be the same, Mac OS is much slower... although I should note that the Windows side of things seem unaffected, and I'd say that (gasp) WIndows is running more smoothly that the Mac OS on m machine. Pretty **** annoying.
    Some symptoms:
    - Slow boot time AFTER I log in. The loading of the desktop and apps seems to take forever, when prior to bootcamp they'd all pop-up in maybe 10 seconds max. Note: this is not the general boot-time from OFF to the login screen... that's fine.
    - Loading applications (safari, terminal, etc) all seem to take forever to load. For instance, safari may take 30-60 seconds to load and show my home page. Before bootcamp, this would take a few seconds.
    - Once in Safari, the load time from page to page seems slow and jerky. Say I load engadget.com, or something equally image/content heavy, it seems like the whole page has to load before I can even start to scroll. Even then, scroll seems 'jerky' and not so smooth. Again, before bootcamp, this wasn't a problem.
I've gone through a bunch of stuff to try and fix this, but nothing so far has helped. Here's what I've done so far:
    - repaired permissions
    - used disk utility to verify/repair any problems (it didn't find any problems, btw)
    - reset PRAM
    - rebuilt spotlight index
    - disabled spotlight indexing of the BOOTCAMP by placing a file called '.metadataneverindex' in the root directory on that partition. This interestingly helped speed up the the post-login boot-time, but application loading and browser performance is still pretty bad.
Anyone else have these issues and figured out what's going on? An IT guy at my job told me to stay away from bootcamp 'because 'it'll slow down your machine', so I don't think this is an isolated occurrence.
From what I've read all over the place, I shouldn't be taking a performance hit on the Mac OS side of things for installing bootcamp. Any thoughts tips you could provide would be helpful.
*I might use Parallels or some other VM down the line, but I don't want to run Windows 7 solely in a VM. Yes, I HAVE tried installing Parallels with Windows 7 and it didn't slow anything down, but due to the nature of my work, I want to be able to boot to Windows directly without having any overhead. (this is small percentage of what I'd be doing with the Mac, but enough that I wanna get this bootcamp install working)

Sorry, Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 Ghz... pretty much a stock 13" new MBP. I'm running bootcamp 3.0.2.
I should also note that I was having this issue last week and decided to reinstall everything and start from scratch just to see if that helped. It's a new-ish Mac, so clearing everything out wasn't that big of a deal... other than taking the time to do it. I didn't use a time machine backup as I wanted to reset everything.
So, I think I've figured this out after fiddling with the user accounts per your suggestion. I had set up my Mac so that my general-use account was 'standard' with a separate admin account for installing stuff.(more secure) This was different from what I had setup last week where I had one account that was setup as the admin. (less secure)
I added a new user, 'test' as a standard account. I restarted into 'test' and still had an issue. I quick-switched over to my admin account for something and immediately noticed that everything speed up. Hmmm...
I changed my regular account back to admin and that restored the performance on my mac to its pre-bootcamp state. (happy!) I'll need to play around with this more, but it seems that the two things I did to fix this were:
    1) Add the file to the bootcamp partition to exclude it from spotlight
    2) Login as an admin account
I haven't had a chance to see if setting my account back to a standard account will in fact cause the performance to drop. I also then need to test with removing that file from BOOTCAMP to exclude it from spotlight. Right now, I think I have more correlation than causation, but at least it IS working well again.
I'll update later today. Hopefully I'm not going to have to leave my main account as the admin.
*ALSO, I tested out configuring Mac OSX to immediately unmount the bootcamp partition at login, and that did help with performance, but kind of made using Parallels a PITA as I had to then go and manually mount that partition when I wanted to get into Windows through parallels. It worked, but it was a janky work-around. I have since dropped that configuration and now just let BOOTCAMP mount.

Restore iPad to Factory Default; do not restore from backup. It may be the cause of the problem.

  • After encrypting with filevault 2 on mountain lion, safari is extremely slow

after encrypting with filevault2 on mountain lion, safari is running extremely slow.
it's taking more than 45 seconds (sometimes a full minute) to load pages.
my internet speeds are 35 mbps download and 6.35 mpbs upload, so it's not my internet connection.
i have deleted the cache files and the system preferences.
i'm finding that chrome is faster, but i'm seeing slowness there too.
in encrypted using filevault 2.0 yesterday, all software is up to date.
can anyone please help me with this?  i don't want to have to turn off filevault.
    thanks!

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have a wrong owner. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it, then drag or copy it — do not type — into the Terminal window:
    find . $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID \) -ls
Press return. The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If any personal information appears in the output, edit before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • Slow performance after installation of new OS-X

I don't know if anyone else has been experiencing the same problem as me, but it seemed to occur after I installed the new OS-X.
My MacBook Pro has gone stremely slow and it seems to be related to MAIL. I thought that the standard MAIL program that comes with MAC was the problem, so I installed Postbox and that seemed to work for a while (1 day or 2) and then it was the same. It's not just email programs that are slow, but all programs.
Click and wait seconds (10, 20, 30 sec) just for a program to open. Moving between files is so slow. I feel like I'm using Windows again.
I'm no expert, but when I look at MEMORY usage, out of 4GB I'm using 3.8GB. My Virtual Memory is 4.76GB. See screen shot below.
I would apprecaite if anyone can help me resolve what the problem is.
    Thanks
    Richard Giuliano

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Slow performance after app start up on AIR 2.6 on Android

I'm developing an application built using AS 3.0 compiled with the latest Flex 4.5 SDK.  We have a CS5 fla expored as a SWC which is then imported by an AIR project.
We use a mx:Application mxml as the entry point to the application and immediately show a "Loading message" as the application finishes loading.  How it's designed is it builds all the UI elements that are needed by the entire application, instantiates them, and then makes most invisible (or on lower layers in the viewstack).  We realized we needed to call .stop() after we set the visible property as false.  However the number of actual clips in the entire application is less than 300 instances in totality.
When we run the application on a desktop either as AIR or a flash swf on a webpage, the performance is fantastic.  Every button reacts correctly, all the drop shadows appear perfect, and it functions with no issues. When I profile the application the memory footprint isn't that huge (~14mb) and it drops and climbs by a few mb, but never grows very large and always settles back down again.
Unfortunately when we deploy it to an HTC EVO, the exact same application starts to load and usually finishes quickly, but soon after it gets amazingly sluggish to touch response.  Sometimes taking more than 15 seconds to register a button click event.  After a minute or so, it suddenly goes back to normal and then functions perfectly well for the rest of the time it's running.
We've tried checking for any memory leaks or objects that don't get garbage collected, but there isn't really any culprit.  We only use about 4 timers in the application and then they only run once every 5 to 10 seconds anyway.  We've switched many of the filters and vector graphics to PNGs and turned it into gpu renderMode, however the application still functions the same.  We've changed sprites that we don't change their rotation, color or alpha to cacheAsBitmap and cacheAsBitMapMatrix.  Still no change.
Does anyone have any suggestions of where else to go next?  We unfortunately can't release the source code of our application but may be able to provide compiled versions if anyone needs it.
    -Matt Morrissette

So after a lot of additional investigation the only thing we can figure out that helps is frame rates.
    According to:
    http://www.unitedmindset.com/jonbcampos/2010/09/08/optimization-techniques-for-air-for-and roid-apps/
Setting the frame rate on the stage to something like "4" should improve your application's performance if you're not using any animations that you really want to be smooth.
Unfortunately we found with a frame rate of 4, the application has serious performance issues after it starts up (usually within 30 seconds).  We are not using any components other than a few standard flex and flash components (imported from a swc) and no long movie clips or motion animation of any kind.
When we raise the frame rate to 8 suddenly the entire applications becomes much more responsive and the entire slow down issue disappears.
Thought I'd at least tell someone.
    -Matt

  • Slow performance after iOS 7.1 upgrade, please help.

My kids have iPad Airs.  One of them has a serious slow down in performance after upgrading to iOS 7.1.  The others work fine.  It is so slow that it is unusable.  When you type a single character, it takes several seconds to show up on the screen.  I'm rebooted and did a reset in Settings.  Any other ideas?  Please help.

I called Apple Support (800-275-2273) and they also recommended a reset: "Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears".
It came to a screen with a USB cable and arrow to iTunes logo.  I had to connect to my PC and lanuch iTunes.  iTunes recognized the iPad in restore mode.  My only option per Apple Support was to restore to factory defaults.  It appears all data is lost.
The Apple Support person would not admit that this is a known issue with iOS 7.1 even though you can go online and see that may people have slow performance after upgrading to iOS 7.1.

  • Performance Degradation after implementing SQLNET encryption

    Hello Everyone...
We are in the process of implementing SQLNET encryption.
As apart of POC.. we were performing test runs.. our appdev person noticed 3x degradation while retriving "CLOB" data over sqlnet encryption.
Here are the current sqlnet settings...
    ## SQLNET ENCRYPTION DETAILS
    #SQLNET.ENCRYPTION_SERVER = required
    #SQLNET.CRYPTO_SEED = 'ksfksoiewns324ssfahne'
    #SQLNET.ENCRYPTION_TYPES_SERVER= (AES256,AES192)
    #SQLNET.CRYPTO_CHECKSUM_SERVER = required
    #SQLNET.CRYPTO_CHECKSUM_TYPES_SERVER = (MD5)
, I see about 3x slower performance when looping over clobs when sqlnet encryption is on in CBTS environment. I ran the test from usoh2sxutl001 connecting to shoppingasmstg-scan.cxloyalty.com:1521:shopping using a standalone java test. Each iteration loops over 1000 rows with clobs returning a total of 1343833 bytes; total time for 10 iterations was 3290 ms with encryption on while 1035 ms with it off. The performance for just looping over strings with only 7004 bytes was fine.

  • Slow Performance on QueueReciever.recieve() + MQ

    Hi,
I have been wrecking my brains around this pickle for the last week or so and would appreciate any assistance I could get here.
Problem Description: Incredibly slow performance when invoking a QueueReciever.recieve() connecting to MQ server version 6
    Benchmarks: 100-900ms per invocation
    Configuration:
    JVM: WS 6's own
    MQ: 6.0
    Application Server: WAS 6
Managed resources: Queue Connection Factory (queues are dynamically created)
Runtime artifacts: QueueConnectionFactory, QueueConnection, QueueConnection, QueueSession, QueueSender,
QueueReciever, TextMessage, in Queue out Queue
    Scenario:
    QueueSender created
QueueReciever created using a MessageSelector filtering on JMSCorrelationID
Message is sent to the in queue using QueueSender, embedded with a JMSCorrelationIDImmediately after, a QueueReciever.receive() is invoked listening on the out queue
Result: VERY slow return from the synchronous block on the receive().
Given: reply message is put on the out-queue after about 40ms by 3rd party application.
Again any assistance would be appreciated.

  • ITunes 10.1 (64-bit) slow performance

    Hello all,
I have recently bought a new pc, a very fast machine (see details below), but I'm experiencing bad performance with iTunes 10.1 (64-bit) for windows.
I don't have a lot of stuff in iTunes, I have about 120 apps, 500 songs, 1200 photos, couple of ringtones and 0 videos in my library. The whole iTunes interface responds slowly. Like clicking on Music, Videos, my iPhone in the side menu makes iTunes freeze for a couple of seconds and then switches to the screen. Even after loading a screen iTunes is freezed for a seconds before it's responsive.
I've googled around for a while, and got some tips to disable some options in the preference window, so I've set all unnecessary things off, like: crossfadings songs, automatic update checking, looking for devices, automatic organizing, ping, genius, shared libraries, etc. but it doesn't speed up iTunes much.
It gets even worse whenever I connect my iPhone 3G (Fw 4.2.1, 16GB, Black). iTunes simply freezes for like half a minute and the pc makes a few beeping noises because of connecting an usb-device. Even Windows 7 slows down a lot while connecting. iTunes gets responsive once my iPhone appears under devices in the side menu.
Software I have constantly running in the backround are: AVG anti-virus free edition, SQL Server 2008, Steam and Skype. Turning off these softwares doesn't make a difference as well. There are no virusses or whatever on my pc. I let AVG anti-virus do a complete scan like once a week.
Taskmanager shows iTunes using about 240,000K of memory, followed by steam with 70,000k of memory and skype with 30,000k of memory.
Anyone else experiencing slow performance or know how to resolve this ?
    System details:
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Intel i7 950 @ 3.06GHz quad core processor
    6gigs of ddr3 (1600mhz) memory

Same with me! I recently bought a new laptop, and iTunes 9 was working just fine. It takes like 5 seconds to scroll down one line. Clicking on different tabs and things takes forever as well. I am not sure what is causing it yet, but like you, I have disabled all sorts of iTunes settings which has not helped yet. Hopefully Apple will fix this problem soon! Let me know if you find a way to solve this.
My PC Specs which are well above the minimum requirements:

  • Sudden extreme slow performance

I have run Tiger on this machine for about 6 months with no problems. In the last few weeks everything has started slowing down noticably. The hard disk is running ragged, constantly reading/writing, from looking at the cpu monitor it seems like the computer is not actually using it's ram and is just reading and writing. I tried clearing caches and that worked for a few hours but the machine now seems to lock up after a few hours use. I get to the point where i cannot open menus, switch programs, or even force quit or restart. Everything locks up - spinning beachball - and the hard disk is left constantly writing. I have 9 -15Gb free out of 40Gb on the disk - i assume this is enough. Playing music and safari is no problem. But I am using iphoto and photoshop as well as other programs in the background. This was never previously a problem and ran smoothly. I know it's fairly vague but if anyone can help..

    Hi, Ben.
Thanks. However, it would help to see some of the specific data points from the instructions in those FAQs. Specifically:
    1. You wrote: "(the pageins/outs are about equal) but i'm getting REALLY slow performance across the board. "It still sounds like it is "thrashing."1.1. Did you check the pagesin/pageouts per second as described in my "Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space" FAQ? The per-second values can only be found using top as described therein.
1.2. Did you check for a runaway process in Activity Monitor per the "Troubleshooting" section in my "Tuning Mac OS X Performance" FAQ?.
The activity you describe (beach ball, heavy disk writing) has to be coming from somewhere, so checking Activity Monitor as I describe in that FAQ should tell you. Find the process consuming the most %CPU as instructed in the FAQ. Post back the result, i.e. the process name.2. You wrote: "It seems to lock itself up with the hard disk clicking and crunching. Is it possible the hard disk is giving up and so is writing at a very slow speed??? "To check this, see my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ:2.1. Perform at least Steps 1-3 of the Procedure section therein in the order specified.
2.2. Also, review the section therein on "Bad Sectors" to see if the "clicking and crunching" sounds you are hearing are similar to those that generally indicate bad sectors.3. If the disk checks out OK per point 2 above, and depending on what you find in point 1.2 above, the process may be an errant Startup or Login Item. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    Good luck!
