Slow Safari startup
Hi
I have been experiencing slow start up of Safari in my Macbook Pro (13in, mid 2010)
How do I address this situation?
Appreciate your inputs.
Thanks.
Reset Safari.
No need to reset the item "Saved names and password".

I'm using Safari 4.0.3 for Windows on XP SP3 and it seems to take a long time to start. After I've already run it once and cached everything, starting still takes 8 seconds. I used procmon from Microsoft to watch what it's doing, and 5 seconds of that time is spent trying to contact local port 5354 (mdnsresponder, part of Bonjour I think), while the CPU and disk aren't doing anything.
What's up?yes - literally 5 minutes
when I start it from the command line I get this message
StartSocket: passing startup args to already-running Azureus java process listening on [127.0.0.1: 6880]
Eventually I get a SocketException as it times out.
I presume something else is using port 6880. Does anyone know what this is or how I can find out? Why is Azurerus trying to use 6880, I can't see anywhere where this can be changed? -
IMac slow on startup after installing Mavericks
Hi,
Like others I have been experiencing my mid 2011 iMac being slow on startup (and a little slow after that). I've read a lot of threads about this and was wondering how to approach it.
I was already thinking of buying more RAM ( I currently have 4GB) and updrading to Yosemite, does anyone think this may help rather than going through many diagnostic steps with Mavericks?
..... or am I likely to find myself back in the same position!
Jon
P.S. i know the Apple site says no RAM is available for this model, but one of the more experienced posters supplied a link to a site which implies that there is.Hi there,
Here's the report.
By the way, with just Firefox and Aperture open, here is a copy of my Activity Monitor:
The swap used seems to be a very recent thing, until a few days ago it read 0.
The slowness is after startup - things bounce in the dock and safari takes nearly 10 secs to open, but if the Mac has been on a little while, or if it's been on sleep, then things run ok. There are other things I have noticed like some of the Aperture functions being slower and a bit clunky - this seems to have a been a constant feature since I upgraded to Mavericks and upgraded Aperture to go with it.
Any help you can give is appreciated.
Jon

Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Go to Settings>Safari and Clear Cookies, Data and History
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device. -
Firefox 21 is really slow on startup, I have disabled all addons, checked memory, optimized win 7, ran system mechanic but it is still slow, changed home page . IE 8.9.10 is lightning fast on startup.
A tad faster but still slow compared to IE 8,9,10 where it starts instantly.

Downgrading (Slow) Safari 5 to (Fast) 4.0.5
I've tried some ways from Apple Discussions to fix Safari 5, sometimes it seems fixed, but again and again it gets slow,
Can somebody post an easy way for downgrading (Slow) Safari 5 to (Fast) 4.0.5?
Thank you,
FranciscoI had the same problem. If you have an external hard drive, your older edition Safari is probably saved on there. Otherwise, Google Safari 4 and see what you get. Safari 5 is horrible.

I would like to thank all of those who are posting hints for dealing with a slow safari. I have two iBooks one running 10.2.8 and the other running 10.4.2, both of which seem to be infected.
Last evening I did make a few changes to the 10.2.8 iBook. I deleted the preference files, the cache, and the icons folder. No real improvement. I used the terminal 'ipconfig' command and got my ISP's DNS numbers and entered them. This seemed to make a huge difference. I even experimented with turning Java Script off. However, this actually made some web pages slower.
Turining Java Script back on and opening the Activities window, I noticed something really interesting. The pages Safari was hanging on, even with the above changes, were all attempting to load a similar file. In fact, Safari never does load that file and it appears that the page is completely loaded. One of the sites I am having difficulty with is Apple's page. Here is the file which Safari cannot load:
link
Here is an other example of a similar file on CNN.com:
link
I am very encouraged that I have found this similar link between all of the pages that my Safari hangs on, but this means nothing to me. I was hoping someone would be familiar enough with these types of files that they could shed some light on my problems. I can only hope that this is the problem that all slow Safari users are encountering and a solution can be had.
I will attempt to make changes to my 10.4.2 iBook this evening and report those results as well. With a three month old at home it is difficult to get much free time to solve a very difficult problem.

Hi,
I am a new administrator and am facing an issue with my Oracle 8.1.6 database.I have encountered a problem where somedays my Oracle becomes extemely slow after startup.Almost it goes into a hung kind of state wheneever any reports etc are accessed from the application. After waiting for abt half an hour or so everything goes back to normal.
Has anyone faced a similar kind of problem .Has it got something to do with the recovery process taking place during startup. Can you please help me find a solution to this.
Regards,
Dineshin order to be sure you may watch the operating system cpu, disk, memory and network load and catch the top consuming proceses - you can use sar iostat vmstat and netstat for unix -
After match them from v$ views to find out the sql query, what they are waiting etc. - you can use this query to identify what is going on behind -
-- who is doing what
SELECT sq.sql_text,

'waits => TRUE' || ', ' || 'binds => TRUE);',
'exec dbms_support.stop_trace_in_session(' || se.sid || ', ' || se.serial# || ');'
FROM v$session se, v$sqlarea sq, v$process pr, v$session_wait sw, v$sess_io io
WHERE status IN ('ACTIVE', 'KILLED', ' INACTIVE', ' CACHED', ' SNIPED')
AND se.sql_hash_value = sq.hash_value(+)
AND se.sql_address = sq.address(+)
AND se.paddr = pr.addr
AND se.sid = sw.sid
AND se.sid = io.sid
ORDER BY sq.sql_text, se.username, se.schemaname, se.osuser, se.program, se.sid
You need to match the top consumer os processes' id with the "pr.spid" column, then you might look at the other columns of that row for details.
Also the database runs a number of jobs - backups, etc. these may be the problems. -
MacBook Pro Very Slow at startup
For the last couple months, my MacBook Pro (running Mac OS X 10.6.5) has been incredibly slow at startup. It used to take seconds to go from shutdown to ready for use. Now it takes a few minutes. The computer also freezes up twice (with the spinning "rainbow" wheel icon) for anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple minutes the first time I open any program after startup.
The computer generally works normally after that. It wakes up from "sleep" quickly and doesn't have any hangups. It just seems to be messed up when starting up after a shutdown.
I'm fairly new to Macs and can't seem to find any kind of system diagnostic or hard drive scan utility on my system to run to check my system, which would be the first things I'd have done with a similar issue with a PC.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. That indicates the HD is failing. Backup immediately while it's still working and take it in for repair. It's in your best interest to make an appointment at the Genius Bar, if you have never done this the link is noted below will get you started. Make sure you let them know what you have done and what error messages you have received.

Mac slow on startup displaying colour wheel.
Any ideas as to what may be causing this problem? My mac is only a few months old and is one of the latest models.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
I've read through the "Slow Safari" posts, but haven't seen a problem exactly like mine...my Safari runs fast sometimes, slow other times, usually when I'm entering some kind of form.
For example, no problem getting to Apple Support-->Discussions-->Safari
But when I enter a search term (like "Slow") it never loads. Same with Google, Mapquest, my credit union web site.
Any clue what's going on?
(Here's the twist: I'm sending this message via my circa 1995 PowerMac 7600 running IE because I couldn't get Safari to work...)
Thanks,
elyse
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)My problems are like yours... totally unpredictable. The forums are very slow. eBay for instance is usually slow if I can even get it to work. Everything else just totally varies. I have to refresh until it works and sometimes that doesn't even do it. I'm very frustrated with the whole problem. Like you, my old machines do not have these problems at all.

FCE Slow, sluggish startup and freezes up?
We've been having some problems with Final Cut Express, it is very slow to startup(sometimes 15 minutes), and after it starts it sometimes locks up with the spinning rainbow wheel. We are running this basically on 12 machines and over half are having similar problems. We are running this on 2 year old G5 iMacs, running OSX 10.4.8 and Quicktime 7.1.5. I've reset the PRAM, and did an open firmeware reset and reinstalled the application, but it is still acting this way. Any idea's?
"it just seems to have problems when the Broadcast
class logs into that profile to use FCE that it is
real slow and we have problems."
Are these admin users? Are there restrictions on the
user? What are the restrictions? How much RAM is on
the machines?
These are not admin users, but the profile I used that worked fast was an admin user. These users can't use most of the System Prefs, but have access to all of the space to save for the most part. The machines have 1gb of memory. -
So, having searched most if not all the info here, all the things I've done (Onyx, basic maintinence, resetting all that could be reset), the dang thing is as slow as ever. I also made a new identity and of course, THAT is fast as all get-out.
Should I just back everything up and reformat? That'll be fun...
Thanks, JT
emac Mac OS X (10.3.8)Three steps you can take::
Move the Icon folder in your Safari folder (User Library) to the trash. This resets the favicon file (small icons in the Address Bar) to zero, and you start building over. This folder can become rather large or corrupted, slowing Safari down in the process. If you don't want favicons appearing you can also access the folder in your Finder, call up the info panel (highlight folder, then apple key + I), change the preferences to read only and lock the folder. This will shut off the favicons.
Second, same Library>Caches - move the Safari folder to the trash. Safari will automatically create a new one.
Third - Safari Preferences>Autofill - this feature can slow down Safari as it increases in size. Good to select the edit key next to any of the 3 options offered, and remove items no longer necessary.
Give these a try and post back with results.
The latest version of Safari for Panther is available with the 10.3.9 combined update. If you upgrade, make sure you "repair permissions" via Disk Utility when the install/restart is completed.
