Slow Shutdown & Startup on MacBookPro OS ML 10.8.2

I have faced slow shutdown & startup on my MacBook Pro Late 2011 , OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 for a while.
I have done searching for solution and had tried some but no luck.
Could someone please help.
Thanks!

  • Slow shutdown after 10.8.2 - securityd / appleevents

    Hi everyone,
since the last update (10.8.2) I have experience slow shutdown time, with spinning wheel also.
I use the OWC SSD 120GB 6GB as startup disk since OS Lion and my machine (Macbook Pro 13 late 2011) used to be extremely fast. Talking about shutdown time, it used to be about 2~3 seconds, but now running 10.8.2 it was increased to 20 seconds.
Using verbose mode it is possible to see:
com.apple.securityd ----- PID is still valid
    com.apple.securityd ----- Killability: dirty/idle-exit unsupported
com.apple.coreservices.appleevents ----- PID is still valid
    com.apple.coreservices.appleevents ----- Killability: dirty/idle-exit supported
    com.apple.launchd ----- System: Still alive with 2/1 (normal/anonym
it repeats 3 times, and after something awas unable to get, it shows
    Killing all processes
Does anyone have some idea about what is going on?
Is this bug about the SSD drive? On 10.8.1 I did not notice any issue. It used to be very fast on shutdown...
    Thanks,

here goes a picture of verbose mode shutdown. Sorry about the poor resolution...
    Thanks again!!

  • MacBook Pro Retina 2013 very slow shutdown

Sorry - posted this inadvertently in the ML-Section.....OK, here we go again...
Hi community, I'm running a (almost) brandnew late 2013 MBPr 15", OSX10.9., 16 GB RAM , 1TB SSD. Startup ist reasonably fast, but the shutdown ist awfully slow. If I press the Power button, the screen gets light grey, after a while a spinning wheel appears and after approx. 50 sec up to a minute the machine shuts down. I didnt't install any crapware such as MacHelper but scanning through the threads in this community I noticed that Parallels seems to cause many issues concerning a slow shutdown and I'm indeed running a Win 7 prof-VM under Parallels 9.
About the first appearance of the shutdown lag I'm unsure since the first few days I didn't shut down the MB but put it to sleep.
So far I've only disabled (and de-installed) Sophos AV-software, iCloud and Synology CloudStation - to no avail. Also I've looked in the Konsole logs which looked quite frightening whith lots of "faults" and such....but didn' give me any clues and repaired permissions. I'm unsure about deinstalling Parallels because I need it for work. Is there any other possibility to determine wether Parallels is causing these lags ?
Compared to my iMac (early 2008, 10.6.8), which is loaded with all kind of data and software (but not Parallels !), the latter shuts down in about 10 secs....my MacBook should make it much faster...
    Any suggestions ?

    1. This is a comment on what you should and should not do to protect yourself from malicious software ("malware") that circulates on the Internet. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
If you find this comment too long or too technical, read only sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
    2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user, but internally Apple calls it "XProtect." The malware recognition database is automatically checked for updates once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
       3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
For the reasons given above, App Store products, and other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. OS X security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
    4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
    5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they're not absolute protection. The first and best line of defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "Trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the malware attacker. If you're smarter than he thinks you are, you'll win.
That means, in practice, that you always stay within a safe harbor of computing practices. How do you know what is safe?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is unsafe.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
Pirated copies or "cracks" of commercial software, no matter where they come from, are unsafe.
Software of any kind downloaded from a BitTorrent or from a Usenet binary newsgroup is unsafe.
Software that purports to help you do something that's illegal or that infringes copyright, such as saving streamed audio or video for reuse without permission, is unsafe. All YouTube "downloaders" are outside the safe harbor, though not all are necessarily harmful.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. If it comes from any other source, it's unsafe. For instance, if a web page warns you that Flash is out of date, do not follow an offered link to an update. Go to the Adobe website to download it, if you need it at all.
Even signed applications, no matter what the source, should not be trusted if they do something unexpected, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
"FREE WI-FI !!!" networks in public places are unsafe unless you can verify that the network is not a trap (which you probably can't.) Even then, do not download any software or transmit any private information while connected to such a network, regardless of where it seems to come from or go to.
    6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Follow the above guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself from malware.
    7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good, if they do any good at all. Any database of known threats is always going to be out of date. Most of the danger is from unknown threats. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free anti-virus products in the Mac App Store — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. Most of the real-world danger of malware attack comes from highly targeted "zero-day" exploits that are not yet recognized.
By modifying the operating system, the software itself may create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
    8. An anti-malware product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," doesn't have these drawbacks. That doesn't mean it's entirely safe. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An anti-virus app is not needed, and should not be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful only for detecting Windows malware. Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else.
A Windows malware attachment in email is usually easy to recognize. The file name will often be targeted at people who aren't very bright; for example:
    ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!!!!!!H0TBABEZ4U!!!!!!!.AVI♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.exe
Anti-virus software may be able to tell you which particular virus or trojan it is, but do you care? In practice, there's seldom a reason to use the software unless a network administrator requires you to do it.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
    9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
    10. As a Mac user you don't have to live in fear that your computer is going to be infected every time you install an application, read email, or visit a web page. But neither should you have the false idea that you will always be safe, no matter what you do. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.

  • Mavericks very slow shutdown, how to fix it?

Since I updated my 13' late 2012 MacbookPro to OSX Mavericks it won't shut down at all or it takes extremely long (about 1 hour!). Someone any idea how to solve this problem? The only options for me at the moment ar shutting the system down by holding the shutdown/boot button or just leaving my Macbook on all the time, which isn't quite nice .
Hope you guys can help me!

    SOLVED slow shutdown as follows:
WhiteHat Aviator was repeatedly showing up as com.whitehatsec.aviator.dmg in Disk Utility.  There's no uninstaller, but I removed Aviator by deleting:
    Library/LaunchAgents/com.aviator.agent.plist
Library/Aviator  (containing com.aviatorupdate.agent, RunUpdate, UpdateAviator, etc.)
    Library/Caches/Aviator
    Library/Caches/AviatorEngine
    Library/Caches/UpdateEngine-Temp/com.whitehatsec.aviator.dmg-etc.
    Library/Caches/UpdateEngine.503/Downloads/com.whitehatsec.aviator.dmg
    Library/LaunchAgents/com.aviator.agent.plist
    Library/Application Support/Aviator
    Library/Preferences/com.whitehatsec.aviator.plist
    Library/Saved Application State/com.whitehatsec.aviator.savedState
As a huge side benefit, my system no longer hangs for a minute on shutdown!

  • MacBook Pro Very Slow at startup

For the last couple months, my MacBook Pro (running Mac OS X 10.6.5) has been incredibly slow at startup. It used to take seconds to go from shutdown to ready for use. Now it takes a few minutes. The computer also freezes up twice (with the spinning "rainbow" wheel icon) for anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple minutes the first time I open any program after startup.
The computer generally works normally after that. It wakes up from "sleep" quickly and doesn't have any hangups. It just seems to be messed up when starting up after a shutdown.
I'm fairly new to Macs and can't seem to find any kind of system diagnostic or hard drive scan utility on my system to run to check my system, which would be the first things I'd have done with a similar issue with a PC.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That indicates the HD is failing. Backup immediately while it's still working and take it in for repair. It's in your best interest to make an appointment at the Genius Bar, if you have never done this the link is noted below will get you started. Make sure you let them know what you have done and what error messages you have received.

  • Super fast boot but very slow shutdown

Just installed Vertex 3 SSD into new MacBook pro (late 2011), startup time in Lion is now very quick (about 17s) but shutdown time is about 25s.  I have repaired permissions using disk utility but the problem persists.  Please help

OK, found the solution.  I looked at
Apple > About this mac > More Info > System Report...
And noticed an item in the startup items for some HP software that I had installed.
I ran the HP software uninstaller and after another long shutdown, the next shutdown was back down to a second or two.
Seems third party software is to blame for a lot of slow shutdown problems!

  • Random slow shutdowns

    Hi,
I've been googling and found some info about slow shutdowns but nothing helpful.
I'm running Macbook Pro mid-2012, 10.8.4 with an SSD. Usually the shutdown process takes 1-2 seconds but at least once a day it gets stuck and takes about 10+ seconds. I'll post my shutdown log. Maybe you can at least tell me what's causing it if it can't be fixed.
    Thanks!

In this occasion I normally start with "standard" clearing: delet ALL caches, perform Permission Repairing (with M. Lion Cache cleaner, Onyx or similars) and if you don't get result perform an SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
followed by 2-3 consecutively PRAM restarts.
    Cheers
    Simon
PS: I do perform cache cleaning and permission repair at each OS update and I do not have 99% of the problems that other may encounter.

Firefox 21 is really slow on startup, I have disabled all addons, checked memory, optimized win 7, ran system mechanic but it is still slow, changed home page . IE 8.9.10 is lightning fast on startup.

A tad faster but still slow compared to IE 8,9,10 where it starts instantly.

My brand new macbook air 13" seems to have a pretty slow shutdown time (20s+).
As I am new to mac I spent several days trying to find a fix without any succes.

I think this might be the problem but I am not sure which terminal command should be used to reduce the killing time.
Could anyone please help me ?

I've just read on another thread that it could be lion 10.7.1. I can't say this for sure since I immediately restored my time machine backup. I'll re-install lion and check it out, then, I'll put my time machine back.

  • Possible fix for slow shutdown in Leopard

After messing with a slow shutdown issue on a mini and mac book pro (clean install and intel on both), I finally found a solution for the shutdown taking anywhere up to two minutes.
I noticed that if I logged out first, then shutdown my shutdown time was back within reason. If I killed any extra processes running under my name before I shutdown it would shutdown within about 5-10 seconds. The two processes that solved my shutdown issue were: ituneshelper and tunnelblick.
It looks like the shutdown issue for me has something to do with the shutdown process somewhat hanging on user processes running when a shutdown is initiated. Try killing non-essential programs running under your name in Activity Monitor and see if that speeds up the shutdown.
For some reason checking the ituneshelper and tunnelblick login items under Accounts did not stop them from starting up. I had to completely remove them from the login item list.
Hope this helps someone out there.

If you literally "checked" them, meaning the checkboxes, that only affects their visibility. To remove them, select one and then click on the "minus" part of the "plus minus" at lower left.

  • IMac slow on startup after installing Mavericks

    Hi,
Like others I have been experiencing my mid 2011 iMac being slow on startup (and a little slow after that). I've read a lot of threads about this and was wondering how to approach it.
I was already thinking of buying  more RAM ( I currently have 4GB) and updrading to Yosemite, does anyone think this may help rather than going through many diagnostic steps with Mavericks?
..... or am I likely to find myself back in the same position!
    Jon
P.S. i know the Apple site says no RAM is available for this model, but one of the more experienced posters supplied a link to a site which implies that there is.

    Hi there,
    Here's the report.
By the way, with just Firefox and Aperture open, here is a copy of my Activity Monitor:
The swap used seems to be a very recent thing, until a few days ago it read 0.
The slowness is after startup - things bounce in the dock and safari takes nearly 10 secs to open, but if the Mac has been on a little while, or if it's been on sleep, then things run ok. There are other things I have noticed like some of the Aperture functions being slower and a bit clunky - this seems to have a been a constant feature since I upgraded to Mavericks and upgraded Aperture to go with it.
Any help you can give is appreciated.
    Jon

  • Database slow on startup

    Hi,
I am a new administrator and am facing an issue with my Oracle 8.1.6 database.I have encountered a problem where somedays my Oracle becomes extemely slow after startup.Almost it goes into a hung kind of state wheneever any reports etc are accessed from the application. After waiting for abt half an hour or so everything goes back to normal.
Has anyone faced a similar kind of problem .Has it got something to do with the recovery process taking place during startup. Can you please help me find a solution to this.
    Regards,
    Dinesh

in order to be sure you may watch the operating system cpu, disk, memory and network load and catch the top consuming proceses - you can use sar iostat vmstat and netstat for unix -
After match them from v$ views to find out the sql query, what they are waiting etc. - you can use this query to identify what is going on behind -
    -- who is doing what
    SELECT sq.sql_text,
    se.status,
    se.username,
    se.osuser,
    se.terminal,
    se.machine,
    'ALTER SYSTEM KILL SESSION ''' || se.sid || ', ' || se.serial# ||
    ''' IMMEDIATE ;',
    se.sid,
    se.serial#,
    pr.spid,
    se.saddr,
    se.schemaname,
    se.program,
    se.logon_time,
    sq.hash_value,
    sq.address,
    sq.buffer_gets,
    sq.disk_reads,
    sq.executions,
    sq.fetches,
    sq.rows_processed,
    io.block_gets,
    io.consistent_gets,
    io.physical_reads,
    io.block_changes,
    io.consistent_changes,
    se.module,
    se.action,
    se.client_info,
    sw.event,
    sw.p1text,
    sw.p1,
    sw.p2text,
    sw.p2,
    pr.pga_used_mem,
    pr.pga_alloc_mem,
    pr.pga_freeable_mem,
    pr.pga_max_mem,
    'exec dbms_support.start_trace_in_session(' || se.sid || ', ' || se.serial# || ', ' ||
    'waits => TRUE' || ', ' || 'binds => TRUE);',
    'exec dbms_support.stop_trace_in_session(' || se.sid || ', ' || se.serial# || ');'
    FROM v$session se, v$sqlarea sq, v$process pr, v$session_wait sw, v$sess_io io
WHERE status IN ('ACTIVE', 'KILLED', ' INACTIVE', ' CACHED', ' SNIPED')
    AND se.sql_hash_value = sq.hash_value(+)
    AND se.sql_address = sq.address(+)
    AND se.paddr = pr.addr
    AND se.sid = sw.sid
    AND se.sid = io.sid
    ORDER BY sq.sql_text, se.username, se.schemaname, se.osuser, se.program, se.sid
You need to match the top consumer os processes' id with the "pr.spid" column, then you might look at the other columns of that row for details.
Also the database runs a number of jobs - backups, etc. these may be the problems.

  • Very slow shutdowns

This is a new Toshiba S855-S5254 which is now having *very* slow shutdowns. The shutdown startes and then hands at the "shutting down" message till it finally shuts down. The event log for System showed the following error "A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the TOSHIBA eco Utility Service service". So, I uninstalled the TOSHIBA eco Utility using Windows add/Remove programs and on checking Power Options the Eco option is no longer present. But- the long slow shutdowns persists despite 2 reboots. System Event log shows the following repeated error: The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block. Not sure what that means and there is no CD in the drive. Help anyone? Thanks.

What do I do about it?

  • Shutdown/Startup database from java

    Hi,
I need to execute shutdown/ startup database commands from a java application. I have tried wrapping these in sql / sh file using Runtime.getRuntime().exec("z:\\sql\\shut.sql"), but keep getting:
    java.io.IOException: CreateProcess
    any ideas ?
    thanks,

    Hi,
I don't see why the 11g Drivers won't work for earlier releases of the DB as long as you follow the steps in the documentation. Have you tried it?

  • Mac slow on startup displaying colour wheel

Mac slow on startup displaying colour wheel.
Any ideas as to what may be causing this problem? My mac is only a few months old and is one of the latest models.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
