Slow startup and password issue.

Hi all...
Happy new year...!
As a little christmas present for myself I purchased a Crucial M4 256GB SSD for my MacPro 4,1 (2.26GHz, 22GB RAM, 10.8.2). I'm a semi-pro photographer and wanted a bit of a speed up for my processing etc etc. So yesterday I cloned my existing system drive to the SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner. I then installed the SSD in the spare superdrive bay (my other 4 bays are used).
Just as a background my previous startup/shutdown times on this machine where quite slow averaging around 90s for startup and around 45s for shutdown. I had assumed that this was normal and was just a slow syetm HD issue. When I changed the startup disk to the new SSD and booted up the startup time did decrease but not significantly... its now exactly 59s whilst the shutdown times go down to around 30s. In use the speed of the OS is massively improved with applications and local file copying blazingly fast. I've a few friends who upgraded MacBook Pro's and others macs with SSD's and their startups are around 10-15 seconds....!!! I'm not overly bothered by the slow startups/shutdowns but I am curious as to what might be causing these delays. In testing today I deleted everything unecessary from my user account startup items, disabled various apps and checked the /library/startupitems for anything that shoudnt be there. After a couple of hours trying I cant find anything that is effecting the startups and am lost. I'll likely just accept it and move on as in use the SSD is impressive but if anyone has any ideas it'd be appreciated!
A second thing that has happened is that whenever I try to delete/modify/move an app I am now asked to type in my user password. I have tried repairing permissions, checking the permissions of my .Trash folder etc etc but as of yet nothing has worked. Any ideas...??
Many thanks and Happy New Year yet again.
Richie

The traditional way an Operating System deals with "deleted" files is to remove ONLY the Directory information and simply add the data blocks to the free pool. Those "deleted" data blocks are not cleared.
This works in rotating drives because:
1. The logical block size is the same or larger than the physical drive block size.
2. Rotating magnetic media are block-for-block re-writable.
In SSDs physical blocks are much larger "superblocks", and re-writing a portion of a superblock is a slow and difficult read-modify-write operation. In addition, since the OS did not notify the drive what data are no longer needed, deleted data continue to be carefully maintained and re-written by the drive. Soon every write operation becomes a read-modify-write, and performance deteriorates.
In my opinion, this nearly-full condition is likley to cause drive failure. Something more than wishful thinking is required.
Apple enables TRIM on the drives they install directly. They do not do so for third-party drives, but that is likely because those drives have not been tested by Apple.
I have been using a very small SSD as a boot drive for a while, and periodically consolidate free space followed immediately by erasing free space with a third-party utility. I believe this has kept me out of trouble. My son has been using SSD in his laptop and doing nothing for maintenece, and he has killed two drives in a year.
Trim Enabler utility from groths seems to be working, and makes things simple. Your mileage may vary.
if I notice significant performance slips
You added a much lower latency drive and startup times did not improve significantly. Much of the time required for startup is needed for memory testing. The rest is largely attributable to disk Read/Write times. What more evidence do you need?

    Never mind...I found it.
Of course I have all the firewall, worm, scanning, phishing

am working on a remote/testing site however I found the Symantec
antivirus email scan being enabled (doesn't it just interact with
my email program?) was getting in the way of DW9 ftp operations,
causing some lagging that was putting DW9 into an unstable mode
during and immediately after (10 seconds) ftp operations.
The CPU still spikes to 99% during ftp functions but DW9
works even though it's likely taxed to the max but when I turn off
email scan DW9 returned to a functioning state during ftp and
remote file view. Whatever it takes huh?
PS: email scanning only never effected DW8.02

Thanks for the response. I managed to Google the 'nobody' account and found the explanation.
As you say, I assumed the 'syslogd' process had to do with system logs. I did check the console and couldn't find anything of particular interest in the logs.
I'll continue to monitor but if anyone has any further suggestions please post.
One thing that might also have an impact... my available drive space is now down to less than 5gb (runs anywhere between 1gb and 5gb free depending on what I'm running). I know this causes problems for Parallels as it keeps moaning at me, but would it cause any problems with OSX?
    Thanks again,

  • 10.6.1 Slow Startup and Shutdown

Did anyone notice the difference between the 10.6.1 startup and shutdown times and the 10.6 times ?
I had to do a clean install of 10.6 and ignore the 10.6.1 update to get back speed in startup and shutdown.
Is there anyway to solve this.
    Thanks.

I had the same problems, and I figured out the cause. It seems that somehow the ownership of my root directory (/) wasn't assigned to the root account anymore, but to myself instead. This made the kernel prelinking fail since it requires that root is the owner. This is how you solve this after launching the Terminal app:
    {quote:title=terminal commands}sudo chown root:admin /
    sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
    sudo kextcache -system-caches{quote}
You'll have to enter your password after the first command.
Hope this helps someone, since it was really frustrating to have these slower startup/shutdown times for me.

  • FTP Usernames and Password issues in DW 8 for Macintosh

    Hi,
I have an issues in DW8 on Mac OS 10.4.9. Every so often, my
FTP usernames and passwords in the Dreamweaver site definitions
will swap. That means that the username from one site will now be
in the site def for another site. Nothing else ever swaps, e.g.,
the local paths, passwords, and other settings are fine. It is just
the usernames that seem to move from site to site at random. If I
have a test server set up for a site, it also happens there. I've
looked everywhere and can't find anybody else who has had this
problem. I know there is a similar issue on Windows with IE7, but
haven't seen anything on the Mac. This happens on both my G5 tower
and iBook. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I would
appreciate it. It's not too big of an inconvenience, but it is
    annoying. Thanks in advance!
    Brian

Although it may not be the solution, have you installed the

  • Administrator Name and Password Issues!

I don't know what the deal is nor why it's going on but Ive never had this issue before and this happened ever since I reinstalled Mavericks on my mac.
    Any immediate solution to this??

  • MBP a1226 has been acting odd on startup. (and other issues)

Today, every time I've powered the machine on, the fans run at max speed and iStat reports my avg temp at nearly 82C, which is sorta hot and unusual for my almost three year old MBP.
This is the latest in a series of problems I've been experiencing lately that may or not be relevant. First, I'm having that trackpad and keyboard issue detailed in that big topic. As of now, pressing down on that ribbon fixes it. Second, I started up my computer one time to find that OS X was reporting a battery issue. The message was something like "Service battery." I just purchased the battery brand new, from an Apple Store, last September or so. After a reboot, the message went away and hasn't come back since.
So as far as questions, is the initial issue something to worry about? Also, should I consider talking to Apple about my battery?

You might want to open Activity Monitor and see if there is some hung up process running in the background which is hogging the CPU and causing the heat and fan noise. Be sure to select "All Processes" at the top.
It wouldn't hurt to have Apple evaluate your battery--I believe that here is a stress test they can run for you to be sure the battery is functioning properly.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2010) - Slow Startup and Initial Load of Apps after Mavericks Install

    Hello everyone,
Long time Snow Leopard user here.  I've been absolutely, 100% thrilled with my MBP's performance / speed since mid 2010.  Since installing Mavericks I've noticed two things:
    1. Initial on boot load times seem much slower
    2.  The first time you open an app (Safari, even TextEdit) is far slower than in Snow Leopard.
Now granted, once the computer has been on for about 5 minutes, and once you've had an application open for 1-2 minutes, than performance is okay once again.  But it seems that quite literally everytime you do "anything" for the first time since the computer has been turned on you run the risk of a spinning beachball and an extended wait.  This simply never happened in Snow Leopard.
I'm not a computer science major but I do understand that when you do something for the first time since a reboot it will need to load new files into the RAM which takes time.  However, I've been using this computer since 2010 and have never experienced this behavior / speed / delay, etc... something seems fundamentally different.
For example, even just opening finder, and navigating to the Applications folder results in sluggish behavior the first time.  Also, anytime you first click the top menu bar in an application you run the risk of a beachball.
It doesn't seem like a failing hard drive because I can read/write large chunks of data one an app is finally loaded.  It's just initially loading the app takes quite literally 10-20 times longer than Snow Leopard.  It seems like perhaps Mavericks itself, the core of the new OS was perhaps installed in a bad sector of the HD, but none of my other files are on bad sectors... if that makes sense.  Again - I'm not a computer science major so I'm largely just making things up
It also seems as if multitasking and switching between several open apps has seen a decrease in performance.  Could it be that perhaps Mavericks RAM management is superior to Snow Leopard, but only if there is a TON of RAM to go around?  Could it be as simple as Macs with only  4GB installed should not be allowed to even install Mavericks?
Does this sound normal for Mavericks considering I have a C2D processor, a non SSD, and only 4GB ram?  I know those specs are "outdated" for 2014, but keep in mind these were the specs that I've always had and with Snow Leoapard I was consistently thrilled with the speed of the computer.
I suppose my question is: should my strategy be to simply turn the computer on, get a cup of coffee and let everything load and maybe even have my frequently used apps load on startup, etc... and carry on as normal?  Does something seem off?  Should I invest in a new SSD / RAM upgrade?  I know the upgrades couldn't hurt, but the issue is that I was perfectly content until upgrading to Mavericks
I've tried booting into OS X Recovery mode and using the Disk Utility.  I've tried Safe Mode.  I've included a "EtreCheck" report below.  I'm open to any ideas / suggestions.
    Thanks!!

Wish I could be of some help, but I'm having similar issues on my mid 2011 macbook pro with 8 GB ram. It's very frustrating. I haven't worked on a computer this slow since the early 90's. Even simple things like signing in to this site bring up the beach ball for maybe ten seconds. When opening up apps I often have to wait minutes, and often end up force quitting when they hang. I'm using force quit a dozen or more times a day, when it used to be very rare.
I don't know if it's Mavericks. I installed a new hard drive in November, but the problems really started getting bad since the latest upgrade.
It's not just opening apps. If I have an app open in the background and switch to it I have similar issues. Watching a simple video is often accompanied by stalls and delays - which is really bad as I'm often using the laptop to edit video. It's become unuseable for work.
Perhaps the most frustrating is clicking on a link, only to find Safari decides to complete a previous scroll that it had paused. The page jumps down, and sometimes I end up clicking on a link I didn't want. Then I have to wait for THAT spinning beach ball before I can go back to the previous spinning beach ball.
It can take up to ten minutes to restart. I've tried everything I could find on these pages so far, and nothing has worked.
I thought maybe it was something I've done (and perhaps it is), but I keep seeing others with similar issues.

  • Username and password issue in SAP GUI logon-Please help

    Hello,
Usually I download the tx.sap file from my work system it downloads and opens the main screen directly.( password is disabled for us). Now when I connect from home(home system through VPN) ,i can download tx.sap file from my company's SAP web portal ,but when I open the same through SAP GUI on my system it pops up a password screen- the issue is my employee ID is already populated in the username tab, but when I provide my domain password (i tried all my passwords),it throws an error -you do not require a password, now when i try without a password it shows fill in all required entry fields. Please assist.

If you enter just the username, the network is not sure which "AD Domain" to contact tp authenticate you as a user. So you need to specify the domain name in any of the below 2 formats. Give it a try.
    Format 1 - [email protected]
    Format 2 - DOMAIN\UserName
    Hope this helps.

  • Slow speedes and connection issues within home net...

    Hi.
I have the black home hub and the white modem... So it's not the latest equipmet. I have to restart the router a couple of times a day due to the following problems......
Slow connection to the Internet and unable to play video etc.
Also I'm unable to locate my Apple TV for AirPlay as well as locate my chromecast.
I've not done any real testing apart check the wifi channels in this area and the channel I use seems the be the best option.
I'm assuming there is a problem with the BT hub, as when I reset it my iPads find the Apple TV when the BT hub has been restarted. My chromecast then also works a bit better and general web browsing may work a little better for a while.
It looks like my BT Hub is slowing my LAN down as connection is not being made to the Chromecase or the Apple TV is not found.
What do I need to do now? Can I have one of the new BT Hubs please?
    Thanks,
    Ian.

    Hi Ian_watson
Thanks for posting, that does sound like a wireless problem as restarting the hub refreshes the wireless channel but this is not recommended as the restarts may cause DLM to think there is a fault on your connection and slow it down.
Have you tried manually changing the channel and switching off smart set up in the hub manager to see if this helps?
Alternatively if you need to refresh the wireless channel try these steps instead of restarting the hub.
Enter http://bthomehub.home in your web browser
If this is the first time you have visited the Hub Manager you'll be asked to change the password.
Click on Settings and enter your password if required.
    Click on Wireless.
In the Wireless Channel section click on Refresh.
The Hub will check the wireless channels and after about a minute will have chosen the best one.
    Thanks

  • MacBook Pro Startup and Display Issues

I've been having some random problems with my MacBook Pro (2.16 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 100 GB 7200 rpm hard drive, ATI Radeon X1600 graphics). Specifically:
    1. Lines across the screen and purple boxes sometimes appear.
    2. The graphic effects (e.g. zooming a window) sometimes get "frozen" on the screen. In other words a remnant from the animation will stay until the window is refreshed.
    3. The Mac sometimes freezes during the startup process. Sometimes the login screen will be unresponsive and other times the Mac will almost bootup but fail when loading startup items.
    4. Less frequently the Mac will freeze randomly. I previously had iStat Menus installed and each time the MacBook Pro froze up it indicated both read and write disk activities.
Yesterday I decided to wipe the machine clean and start from scratch in case there were a software issue or corruption on the hard drive that was causing my woes. I completely erased my hard drive and even zeroed the entire disk to make sure everything was completely wiped out. I also disconnected all peripherals to simplify things as much as possible.
The first time I tried the reinstall everything completed successfully but the "Welcome" movie froze part way through. I then had problems running the install again. I was able to boot off the Leopard DVD, but the machine froze a couple of clicks into the install procedure. After numerous tries I was able to erase the hard drive once again and install Leopard. This completed successfully and I installed all updates.
The problems started to show up again almost immediately, however. I installed iLife and iWork and all the updates and had the computer freeze up on me again during a reboot. I also noticed that the display issues started to show up again even before installing any third-party software.
I've tried running disk tests with Drive Genius 2.1, but no errors have been reported. I've also used the freeware Rember program to run memory tests but have yet to see any errors. Sometimes my Mac powers up without any problems and once it's powered up it often stays running for days. The display issues appear quite frequently. I've using iStat Menus to keep an eye on the temperature sensors and everything appears to be normal - so it doesn't appear to be temperature related.
Fortunately the computer's still covered under the extended AppleCare warranty, but I would like to have some idea what's going on before I take it in just in case they're not able to reproduce the issues.
Any suggestions and insights would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance for reading my rather long-winded message.
    Cheers,
    Tim

I took my MacBook Pro in for repair and it turned out to be an issue with the logic board. I had the logic board replaced (fortunately it was covered under my extended AppleCare warranty) and these problems are a thing of the past.

  • Acrobat XI, hyphens and password issue

    Hi all,
We've recently moved all our macs to Acrobat XI and other CC products.
We've got a *big* issue with Acrobat Pro XI. Several of PDF's made with earlier versions of Acrobat were protected by passwords. And sometimes, due to our naming regulations, the password contains Hyphens. We can still opens our PDF's with Preview ou any web browser with PDF reading capabilities, but, since we use a lot of Acrobat features, it's not a viable option.
So I came here for adivces our maybe a workaround for this painfull issue.
    Regards,
PS: Sorry for my language, as a french speaking ppl, i'm doing my best.

Sadly the PDF's are encrypted when they are created hence the issue…
For the moment the workaround is a pain in the a**, opening the documents with "Preview.app" export the document without any password, re-open it with Acrobat, and put a new password without hyphens…
Well Devs could have easily issued that bug by asking the user which version of Unicode he wants to use…

  • Slower Startup and Slower app launch time

Hi, ever since i upgraded to lion, my app launch times and laptop startup times have gotten much slower. Please Help!

Re:I have noticed more frequently since the 4.3.2 upgrade is a longer delay when I launch the "Settings"  App.
    (in response to Bruce Caucutt)
I have noticed the same response since I upgrade to 4.3.2 - I have reset the phone after shutting down all the Opened Apps, no change. Checking this out a bit more I found that the 4 sec. White screen only appears if you are Launching the Settings App first time, there after it appears almost instantly. It seems it just taking a little longer to launch in the first instance.

  • VERY slow startup and shutdown, CD stuck

I've been looking all over these forums for some help with this problem, but every solution I find seems to make the problem increasingly complex.
I have an iMac that I got in 2010 running OS 10.6.8. I've been using a Seagate GoFlex drive with Time Machine, and noticed the other day that it started making a clicking sound and wouldn't back up anymore, so I downloaded SeaTools in order to run a diagnostic on it. When I restarted my computer to finish installing SeaTools, it got stuck on the blue screen while shutting down, so I held the power button to turn it off, and then turned it back on. It took a long time to turn on (hung up on the blue screen again), and once the desktop came to life, I was unable to type or click on anything for several minutes.
I installed some updates, thinking that might help, but when the computer restarted after installing them, it got stuck again on the blue screen, so I manually turned it off. When I turned it back on, it hung on the blue screen for at least 10 minutes, and I finally just held the power button to shut it down and try restarting in safe mode, which is where it is now.
Another thing that seems related is that there was a CD in the drive that had been there for a few days, with an icon on the desktop. Suddenly, the desktop icon is no longer there, and I can't get it to eject, though I can hear the it spinning when I wake it from Sleep or when I press the eject button. When I try to view Serial-ATA or Disc Burning in the System Profiler, it gets stuck on a spinning wheel and stops responding.
Disk Utility also gets stuck on "Gathering Disk Information" so I can't do anything there, either. Between this and the CD issue, it seems like a lot of suggested fixes for the boot/shutdown problem are not possible to do.
Anyone have any insight or ideas?

Never mind, I figured it out! In case anyone has the same problem, Seagate Diagnostic was the culprit (should have realized right away, oops). More info (and directions for fixing) here:

  • Slow startup and shutdown

Hi.... I use a Toshiba satellite a505-s6980 so when I start it up or shut it down it takes from 10-15min to do it ..... and not just that everything seems to be slower than ever ... I ran a lot of tune-up programs but no use .... I did the check for badsectors ..Nothing  ...... One of the results of one test (event viewer) sayed  Critical about this boat problem(boat duration was 321654ms and isdegradation false) and there are a lot of events having these IDs (100,101,103,108,200,203,300,303,351,302,500,501,109,110))  .... and in the performance test the rate was 2.5 for disk data transfer rate , 3.4 for gaming graphics , 4.1 for graphics and 4.7 for both memory and processor. I hope anyoneto give me an answer for this problem.
    Thanks a lot .
    Solved!

Then it's best to start over by restoring the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. See the section Recovering the Internal Storage Drive, starting on p. 60 of the User's Guide.

That will replace everything on the hard drive. So you need to backup important files and reinstall added applications.
