Slow-to-appear Konsole

Is there a way to make Konsole (under KDE4.1) open faster? I know that most DE-associated terminal emulators run more slowly than xterm and its cousins, but I still expect Konsole to do better than sort of slowly materialize into view.
Is there a setting that I'm not seeing?
I really like my terminal windows to pop up on the screen like they're eager to get to work. As it stands, I get the feeling that I'm disturbing Konsole from a nap.
My machine is decently fast and I've got ample RAM, so I don't think the problem is that my system is underpowered.
Thanks.

Maybe I need to play with yakuake's tabs a bit. I never use multiple tabs in yakuake. Can you jump from one tab to another without using the mouse?
If you're using a nVidia card, have you tried using suggested xorg.conf settings?
I do have an nVidia card, and I think I've got it optimized as well as I can. I've been following the discussions about KDE4 and nvidia.
I'm thinking of ditching konsole in favor of urxvt, but since I'm already a frequent yakuake user, I'll definitely experiment with tabs.
Thanks for the good suggestions.

    Hi robfromkinglake west,
Try and isolate the issue.  Check if it's only with this drive.

  • Firefox 6 Performance is *very* slow. Appears no content is caching (no 304s ever received). Way slower than FF 5.

Since upgrading to FireFox 6 from FF5 performance of Web sites has taken a very dramatic nose dive for the worse. Performance is absolutely dismal.
On closer inspection with FireBug it appears that all requests are constantly re-sent from the server - no caching is performed whatsoever, so content like scripts (jquery from CDN for example) always reload with full 200 responses that are slow. Using Firebug I have not seen a single 304 (cached) response.
This is a straight update from 5.0 which worked reasonably well.
    Any ideas?

Well, apparently it was all a MAJOR glitch/bug!
Today I thought I'd try it on an older iTunes (4.7) and, SURPRISE: the transfers came back to normal-speed!!! No file corruption, all sounds OK (for now).
So, it seems that the problem is iTunes 5.
Any idea how to downgrade iTunes back to 4.7?!

  • Shared Printers Slow to Appear in Printer Broswer

We have an all Mac Network hosted by a Dual 2GHz G5 running 10.4.9 Server. I have setup 7 shared printers on the server for easy access and printing from any of our workstations.
It seems like sometimes when adding new printers to a new workstation config, the printer browser takes longer that I would expect to populate the window with the shared printer queues. Also even if I have a Selected Printer in Print Dialog set to a specific shared printer, sometimes the first time I attempt to print, I may not get that printer first. Furthermore, the first time I print, the print dialog box takes an abnormally amount of time to appear, much slower than if I installed the print driver locally and configured a printer to point to the IP address of the printer.
Any suggestions that could possibly speed this up?

    Hello,
I don't really have ideas, but maybe you should have a look to the "browse" directive.
Maybe all your mac try to send and get printers entries, so it makes everything slow...
Try "Browsing Off" in the /etc/cupsd.conf of your clients (and client.conf should contain ServerName yourserver.local) then restart print service.
Just a clue... hope it could help.

  • Finder items slow to appear in Mavericks?

When opening a finder window the folders appear quickly but contents can take 30 seconds to appear. Any folder, happens through Open File within other apps, and Attach file in Mail. Only has happened since installing Mavericks. Any ideas?

I spent  one month in bloody-**** with this issue.
As far as I know, some people in the forums are having "freezing finder / all day beach ball of death / Fusion drive / SSD slowness..." with Mavericks and the thing that these people have in common is an SSD Disk.
So... maybe if you check out  "About this mac / System Information / SATA / SSD / Trim Support" and enable this one if isn't you'll finally solve the problem, it worked for me.
You can enable it by Terminal, but all the codes I got were for Developer Preview betas, so tried this app and worked like a charm: http://chameleon.alessandroboschini.it/index.php
Hope you can solve it, 'cause I had worst month ever!

  • Dock slow to appear

My macbook suddenly has developed a very slow-appearance of the dock. The boot itself seems normal, through the stage where the gray apple disappears and the desktop is blank. Then it can take 5 to 10 minutes for the dock to appear. I have checked to insure that no extra programs are running. I must have picked up something during my browsing that inhibits the appearance of the dock. How can I repair this, or do I need to take it to a service center?
    Thanks in advance.

Actually AppleJack is very easy to use...
1.Restart your MacBook while holding down Command(apple key) and S till machine boots.
The screen will be black with lines of text
2.Once MacBook boots up,type "applejack auto restart" (without the quotation marks) and press return key. That's it.
AppleJack does the rest. When AppleJack finishes, the MacBook will restart normally

  • Gnome Networkmanager settings screen slow to appear?

Not a problem as such, it works completely; works on boot fine, connects fine, holds connection fine but whenever I click settings it takes 3 to 4 seconds to load up whereas on Linux Mint, for example, it just pretty much appears.
I'm using Cinnamon and everything is completely up to to date as of yesterday.
Anyone else got/noticed/have a fix for this issue?

  • Blackberry 10 blackhole in SMS: slow to appear and disappearing messages sent via sms

hi. i and my friends are z10 and q10 users. two of us are really heavy phone users because of our work. most of the time, we have to communicate with several people fast at the same time. we've noticed the following problems - 1) we've noticed that when we get to a point when several messages are coming in from the different messaging apps and it coincides to when we just sent a sms, said message literally disappears - it doesn't get received by the recipient, and neither does it appear in the conversation thread. when that starts to happen, whatever i type and send just goes nowhere. however, for some reason, when i highlight the message that i will send, it will go through and, i guess, "closes the blackhole" and messages get sent and are recorded again in the conversation thread. perhaps blackberry can fix things such that we won't have to lose messages to "blackholes" again 2) i've been using my q10 since 2nd week of june. i've noticed that over time, the messages i type in sms section seem to take longer and longer to appear in the screen. and when it appears is the only time when it starts to send the message, which happens faster. so if i close my phone (or even just the "chat" or conversation thread with my contact to open another conversation thread with another contact) before the text i typed appeared on the screen, it doesn't get sent until i open my phone or the said conversation thread again. this is very inconvenient especially when i'm in a hurry. now, the longest it's taken for the text to appear on the screen is around 10 seconds. i've tried to find ways to speed-up the appearance of the text but have been unsuccessful so far. i know it's not a network problem since such lag also happened when i was in other countries and used local prepaid accounts in the same phone. I hope blackberry can find tech people who can help fix these things. we really love blackberry and it would be such a shame to lose it.

Same issue here on my Q5. Same problem occured with the 10.1 os that come with my one month old Q5 and now that I have upgraded to 10.1, the same problem is still there. It takes time to appear and to disappear. 15-20 seconds. Just with SMS/MMS.
Also, the Calendar is a mess. It does not stop making mistakes such as appearing in wrong dates....
I had none of these issues with my old Curve 9300.

  • "Save As" and "Open" file dialog windows very slow to appear...

I have a home network with 4 PCs, three using XP/3 and 1 using Win7.  Until recently, I had the three XP boxes in one workgroup (not homegroup) and the Win7 box in a different workgroup.  Everything was running fine.  I got anal and decided
to rename some of the boxes and put them all in one workgroup, the one that the Win7 box is in.
Immediately after I did all that, I noticed that every time I did a "save as" file function on the Win7 box, no matter the application, the dialog window took much longer to appear - sometimes almost 10 seconds.  This is not the case on the XP
    boxes.
Following a suggestion I got on the Microsoft Answers Forum, I removed all the shares on my network and even removed the 3 XP boxes from the network, and I turned off Network Discovery.  The problem persisted.  Only when I disabled my LAN
connection did the dialog windows appear instantly, as they had done before.  I have now restored the original configuration, but the "save as" dialog window continues to come up very slowly on the Win7 box.
Any thoughts, clues or suggestions as to how to fix this non-critical but very irritating problem would be greatly appreciated...

I've hit a similar problem since (or at least exaserbated since) changing to a new ISP service (BT Total Broadband) which included a wifi router upgrade.  LAN has a stable Win XP SP3 fully updated, a W7 also fully updated (I love Office) and a previously
stable Zyxel router.  Then this occasional problem:  File -> Save As from any application stops dead for up to a few minutes, no CPU burn so waiting on interupt or external event.  Patience, then it works.
So I'm guessing a confused IP table somewhere.  I'm off to play with using fixed IP addresses and lease expiries in the LAN part of the new router's config to see if that makes it easier for XP to handle closed connections.
And isn't there a "not persistent" option somewhere ...
But I don't networked drives, I use shortcuts with network addresses.
    More anon after some exploration.

  • My print job is very slow. Appears to print a line then pause for awhile before printing another

psc 2175xi printing problems.  Appears to print a line followed by a long pause before printing the next line or two.  I tried turning off the power to reset the printer, tried troubleshooting with online services and also tried uninstalling and reinstalling.  Not sure what to try next.  Any ideas?

This is caused by the failure of one of your cartridges.  I do not recall if the the PSC 2175 supports reserve mode printing with one cartridge removed, but try the following: Remove the black cartridge and print a test page.  Does the printer print at normal speed?  Is so the black cartridge was the issue and should be replaced.  If not then put the black cartridge back in and remove the color cartridge and print test page.  If the printer now prints normal speed the color cartridge was at fault and needs to be replaced.

  • Slow Text appearing on Screen during typing emails

    Hi,
Slow teat appearinh on Screen during typing emails

I'm wondering if it's something to do with memory management? I'd been playing Scrabble and other apps prior to trying to send an email and it was sluggish. Then I rebooted my phone, went straight to my Gmail account, and typed quickly and efficiently as usual...
Perhaps some of the apps aren't shutting down properly or draining the phone's memory? This seems like something that can be fixed by a firmware update (or perhaps better coded third party apps).
I'd be interested to hear if a restart helps you guys out too?

  • Menu bar icons slow to appear on startup

Of late, when I boot up my MBP, everything comes up quickly except the menu bar icons, which take forever to show up. After that, everything works fine. The only icons that need to load are Airport status, battery status, bluetooth, and date/time. The machine's not usable til these icons appear. They used to show up really fast. Sometimes on startup, they appear, then disappear, then reappear after about 45 seconds. This is not correct startup behavior. Anyone else experience this? It's only an annoyance, but it's driving me crazy.

Try deleting the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. This will return things to the factory default.

  • Keyboard slow to appear in Safari

I have a brand-new IPad 3.   I'm having an issue with Safari and the keyboard.  If I click on any field in any website, it comes up immediately.  It also appears immediately in any other app.
But if I click on the URL or search fields at the top of the browser, the keyboard takes 20-25 seconds to appear.
I've tried killing Safari from the multitask bar, also full power-off as suggested from other threads.  No change.
    Any other ideas?

you may have simply run the available memory down.  double tap the home ket to see th recently used app task bar.  touch and hold any of the icons until they jiggle, then close them off by touching the minus sign.  Then reboot the pad by pressing and holding both the sleep and home buttons until the apple logo appears.  ignore the red slider.
If this solves if for you, remember the steps.  and do this from time to time as needed.

  • Addresses slow to appear when first letter or two are entered

When writing an email I'll enter the first one or two letters of the addressee's name and the computer cycles for several seconds looking for the name choices. My old macbook pro and my wifes computer don't do this. Why is it so slow identifying the name choices?

I had this problem with my current mouse/keyboard setup. It did not happed all the time but when it did it was almost like the mouse was not connected to the computer.
I never was able to figure out what the cause was but it no longer happens. It may have been system updates. Try the combo updater and see if it helps.
By the way, repair the permissions instead of verifying them.
