Slow video refresh on Macbook Pro Retina 13"
I installed 10.9 and was doing fine, apart from the known GMail issue (now solved). But it has been two days now that my Mac has slowed down on video refresh:
(I use a second Apple Cinema Display 24" through Display Port, but it happens even if I unplug the second display)
* when I change screen or call mission control, I can notice a drastic performance drop in the video transitions and the menubar flashes vigorously.
* when fullscreen (for example in Safari) my menubar drops down very slowly and sluggishly.
I reinstalled 10.9 from the recovery partition... but it had no effect. Anyone experiencing this issue?
I haven't installed anything in the last two days. I might have updated the Flash plug-in, but I am pretty sure I did it a few days ago.

I'd like to watch movies and TV shows, downloaded from iTunes or Amazon, on my MacBook Pro Retina, but they all look like they were filmed with an old sock over the lens. Daytime sequences look muddy, and night time sequences are incomprehensible with anything but the brightest objects rendered as black. I can watch the same files on my old MacBook Air and everything looks right, but no manner of tweaking seems to let me watch movies on my new machine.
I've tried adjusting the gamma. It's a bit better when gammas is set to 1.0, but I can't seem to set a gamma less than one. I tried using the Accessibility Contrast control, but it just lowers the contrast, swallowing my desktop into the dark abyss. I tried Applecare, but they don't have a clue. I tried the Apple Store. The "genius" confirmed that it is indeed impossible to watch movies shot anywhere but in the brightest sunlight on a MacBook Pro Retina, and it isn't just my machine, but every similar model in the store. He arranged for someone who really understands color profiles to give me a call, but Apple seems to have dropped the ball on this.
Is there some tool for stretching out the darker grays in Apple video? I don't want calibration. My impression is that my display, like the dozens I checked at the Apple Store are calibrated to make all dimmer grays appear completely black. I want uncalibration so I can actually see what is going on in the movies even if something is in a light shadow or shot at night. Hollywood has lots of trained technicians who can light and shoot night scenes that are quite comprehensible. I've watched a number of such scenes on my old MacBook Air. Choppy video on latest Macbook Pro Retina 13"
I tried to stream video from NAS device (attached to Router) and the video got pause time to time. My Macbook has latest OS X and Adobe Flash.
When I used Ipad2 with CineXPlayer through Twonky , and there was no issue at all.
Here what I have tried and check video on macbook pro :
- Run on different NAS device- still choppy video
- Use faster router AC, stream video from NAS-- still choppy video
- Use different app (instead of Quicktime), stream video from NAS- still choppy video
- Play video to Macbook on hard drive- stable video
- Stream video on USB plugged to router- stable video
From above tries, looks like it's pointing to Macbook has issue to play from NAS, even NAS can hande high data rate (1GByte/minute).
Any helps would be great appreciated.Looks like a problem with the logicboard....specifically the integrated GPU (intel hd 4000).

About a two weeks i have a slow speed on my laptop: 0,7 - 2 Mbps, but in the same LAN iPhone 4 have ~12 Mbps. My router is ASUS WL-520gc; network details:

So the take-home from this thread is that I have to contact Apple Support. It would have been nice if you posted what Apple Support told you.

My Macbook Pro Retina 2012 is running very slow and gives me frequent speed problems.
So, I've noticed it happen gradually for about a year now. It started with just minor but not significant delays in opening up programs, but I didn't mind it because the computer was still fast compared to a PC, which is what I used to use before this Macbook. I got this macbook in 2012, and luckily I still have a warranty, but it'll close soon.
Right now, some problems include:

2) Shutting down and turning on the computer is slow (sorry no picture on this one). When I first bought this mac, and until about a year ago, whenever I turn it on/off it would do it instantly. But now, there is a bit of a delay when turning off. The screen seems to just freeze at a certain frame, stays that way for a few seconds (longer when turning it off right after playing a game or two-- don't worry they're compatible with Mac OS), and then shuts off. And when it's frozen at that frame time, you can still see the background materials because they're only faded away. You know what I'm talking about-- Macbook turns out when turning off and then shuts down. So, much of the screen is white, but you can still see the screen prior to the shut down faded.
3) Internet is running extremely slow. When I check my speed at speedtest.net, I get around 47 mbps on bad days and 53-ish on good days (download speed)

Resetting computer to factory conditions doesn't work, time-machine didn't work, and clearing more storage space didn't work either. I would like to get this problem fixed before my warranty runs out. If so, make a note of those and demonstrate them for Apple. Do NOT, under any circumstances, restart the machine. You want it at its worst when you take it in. If you try to do any of those magic resets, it may just reset things just long enough for Apple to proclaim it healthy. If Apple does that anyway, then there are plenty of opportunities to try those things later after your warranty has expired.
I wish I knew exactly when it does this, but it doesn't always happen. It sometimes does, and sometimes doesn't. I thought about this, too. But the problem is that it's really hard to catch a time or figure out what causes these symptoms to occur. I haven't taken it to Apple because I thought it'll just be a waste of time because they'll probably say that it's healthy so they don't have to put any money/effort to try and fix it... -
Facetime and iMessage on Macbook Pro Retina display slow after Yosemite 10.10.3 Update

I recently updated my Macbook Pro Retina display to Yosemite 10.10.3 update. I see that the Facetime and iMessage has become relatively very slow. Like for example when someone calls on my phone it takes like more than 15 seconds + to show up on my macbook. Earlier it used to be like instant!
I started seeing this problem on Yosemite 10.10.3 update only. Also the same is the story with iMessage. When I get an SMS or an iMessage from my friends it takes like a good 30 seconds + to show up on my macbook pro.
Just for your information, this is the version of macbook i am using

As Suggested by someone I also tried RESETTING my computer's PRAM. That didn't seem to help either. Can anyone help. If it is a genuine bug in Apple Yosemite, I'd like to file a bug in the community.

I just brought a brand new Macbook pro retina display, when i connect it to my apple tv through airplay its too slow and when it try to play a movie apply tv is always a minute or 2 behind. How can i fix this?

I have a Macbook Pro Retina from 2012 and I only got the 250GB hard drive. I'm getting ready to purchase a Panosonic HC-X920 to use with Final Cut Pro X already installed on my laptop. Since I know the file sizes are going to be so big, can anyone suggest an affordable external drive fast enough to keep up with editing the video? I'm not a pro and use it for family and personal projects.
I prefer some thunderbolt options since I haven't had a chance to use the inputs since I got my macbook pro. My MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) is too slow after installing Yosemite version 10.10.1. All programs take for ever to load especially Safari and even chrome. I regret upgrading to yosemite, it was all fine with Maverick. Any suggestions ? ThankYou
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Macbook Pro Retina and Yosemite Video Corruption?
So I have a Macbook Pro Retina (mid 2012), 2.7ghz i7, 16gb ram, which has the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB video card and integrated video. I am running Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10
I have been experiencing a lot of video corruption in different applications, it doesn't seem to be limited to just one application or two -- it is happening in Safari, Mail, Photoshop, and others.

Has anyone experienced this same problem? is there an official name or description for what is going on? Is there a fix? It is quite frustrating.I have the same problem with my older white Apple Wireless Extended Keyboard, which had been working fine with my 2009 iMac. But I experience the issue sporadically with my new Mac Mini. I've read reports of people resolving some BT issues by turning off "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" in the Advanced pane of the Bluetooth System Preferenes Pane.
There are also people having the issue on iOS devices using various Apple BT keyboards. No help, but interesting to note that it's happening across various devices, keyboard models, and OSs. -

I have a MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013) with enabled File Vault on OS X Mavericks. When I boot up the mac freshly it takes quite long to get to the initial login screen (which as I understand is a pre-boot login provided by the recovery partition if File Vault is enabled). However, what is even more bothering me is that once I get to this screen, the whole UI is behaving extremely slow. The mouse makes jumps of a few inches on the screen and the animations (e.g. if you click a user and then an animation shows the password entry field) are running in slow motion and only update every few seconds. Typing the password afterwards runs smothly again (altought for example moving the mouse at this point still behaves as described before). After loggin in to the account OS X runs fine without any hicks. Can anyone give me a hit what this could be and how I could resolve this?
This has already been done:
Reset PRAM
Boot into recovery partition and run repaired disk and disk permissions
Run all OS X maintenance operations and cleared caches using OnyX
What I could imagine is that somehow the recovery partition is damaged (which as I understand is used to boot to the login screen if File Vault is enabled).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ChrisJust ordered a Retina MacBook Pro11,2 (mid-2014 15", 2.2GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, OSX 10.9.4 Pre-installed - Build 13E28) and have the exact same issue. The first thing I did when i booted it for the first time was enable FileValut2 and encrypt the disk. Though I failed to notice this behavior prior to encrypting the disk, the stuttering/lag happens without fail every time I have logged in from a cold boot, locked screen or sleep. Additionally I have noticed the same stuttering behavior when switching tabs on various built-in OSX applications such as the tabs on the About This Mac > More Info.... (System Information) dialog for example, and similarly other dialogs that experience this behavior of resizing when switching tabs. I was running no other software than About This Mac > More Info ... (System Information) and OSX 10.9.4 itself. The issue happens without fail with and without a USB mouse plugged in.
I am really glad to have found this thread and with such recent posts. I'd love to find out that this is just a software bug that will be fixed when OSX 10.10 "Yosemite" is released. If not, I hope the cause of this bug is determined soon so I can still exchange or have it repaired.

MacBook Pro Retina 13" fan very loud/overheats when playing full screen video/games

Just purchased a MacBook Pro Retina, refurbished (because why not - the same product for a cheaper price) around a month ago. It's the 13 inch and is the model before the most recent one came out (4GB of RAM instead of 8GB - late 2013). From the very first day, playing a full-screen video on any site (be it YouTube, Facebook, etc) just makes the fan much louder than usual (so loud that you can almost hear it more over the video itself). Thought it may have been just a thing with Flash Player being buggy, but the problem has persisted for a while now. I'm not even pushing the CPU to any limits - literally playing a full-screen video on Facebook (not even in HD) makes the fan go crazy.
Just last night I tried installing Borderlands 2 and it was the same thing - FPS rate was fine, no lag, just the fan was so loud that I actually got scared for my computer and turned it off. After closing the app and checking out the fan temperature, it was at 91c.
Never happens when browsing/surfing or doing my usual work.
Should I go give it back to Apple? The thing is I start university in less than a week (and hence will be traveling), so not sure if I can afford to give my laptop in to them for a long period of time (I know it should be free though since mine is a refurb item). May it just be an issue that is quickly repairable or is this worse?During processor intensive activities—such as processing HD video or playing a game that makes extensive use of the graphics processor—the fans speed up to provide additional airflow.

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina) and a Sony HandyCam DCR-HC48 video Camera. The Sony only exports video via Firewire, which is not available on the Mac. Is there a firewire to USB or to HDMI adapter?
