Slower connection on the Homehub 4

I bought a homehub 4 which arrived today. I set it up and noticed the speed seems way slower - the BT speed test said about 28/16 down and up, speedtest.net/bbmax and download speeds reflected this too.  I hooked the old Homehub 3 back up and my speed jumped back up 199/15 on the FTTP speed tester.  The homehub and network icon see my pc connected at 1000mbs on the gigE port on both hubs.
I'm on the option 3 160/20 FTTP service and connected over ethernet.  Any ideas?

I decided since I had more time today I'd give it another go, swapped the network cables over and immediately it's working fast on the homehub 4.  I have no idea why, or what could have made it run slower before, but it seems to be working great now..
Download speedachieved during the test was - 176.77 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 16 Mbps-212.83 Mbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 212.83 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 19.55Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps
Utterly confusing, but thanks for the help, I just hope it stays like this

  • WRT54GX2 slow connection all the time, even when right next to it.

My connections are always dropping since I bought the router. Even when I am close to the router the connection is still slow. I keep my PC optimized always so I have ruled out the laptop. Are there any setting changes that I might try? I use my wireless connection only for my laptop.
    Here are the stats:
    WRT54GX2 - Firmware 1.01.18
Not sure what version I have (ver2 or ver1)
    Connection Type - PPPoE
    NAT - Yes
    Unique SSID
    G-only
    Channel - 11
    Broadcast - NO
    Security Mode - WPA/WPA2
    MAC filtering - YES
    Basic Rate - set#2
    Trans Rate - AUTO
    Beacon Interval - 100
    DTIM - 1
    Frag Thres - 2346
    RTS Thres - 2347
    Laptop - IBM Thinkpad Z60M w/Atheros card
    Thanks in Advance!

I used to recommend that "SSID Broadcast" be disabled for security reasons.  But newer cracking methods have made this old trick practically worthless.  So set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.  You security comes from using WPA/WPA2 and a strong password.
Windows XP requires a patch to properly run WPA2. Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=893357 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
If the above does not correct your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
If you are still having trouble, download and install (or re-install) the latest firmware for your router.
    Hope this helps.

  • Slow connection during the night

Okay new here but an old costumer. Well, after numerous calls to tech support and technicians coming over to my place to see the issue, nothing they can do much but to change the me from 1 router to another but theres still and on going problem in the night around 6pm-7pm i will get the speed 300-800kbps instead of 3mb that i am suppose to have. They are still resolving this issue in their central office and I know there's many people in the forum also have this issue around, have this ever been resolved or still an issue?

Hmm a few thoughts on this.
Have you secured your wireless network so that your neighbors aren't picking off free internet access at night when they are home? I would log into your router and see if you have others connected...
Is a cordless phone causing you connection issues, when you went wired your connection reappears so that makes me suspect interference of some sort.
I find our cable internet speeds can slow down at night as more neighbors are online but that doesn't sound like the problem if it clears when you go wired.

  • Slow connection during the 10-day stabilisation pe...

    Hi all
My phone line has been noisy and BT has fixed the problem by installing a new line from my property to the road.  This was 4 days ago and the phone is nice and quiet now; broadband, however is on it's knees at no better than 0.46Mbps.  (Three different test sites agree).
I have raised this 3 times with the call centre and on each occasion have been told that this is quite normal during the 10-day stabilisation period.
Why I am on a stabilisation I don't know, but I do remember that when I was first installed on BB, all those years ago, the speed I had at installation was very close to the speed I had after 10 days.  It was definitely not slow for 10 days and then popped up to 7Mbps!
Secondly, when BT Vision was installed, an engineer made some qos adjustments to my profile to ensure that Vision performed well.  Obviously today none of the streamed Vision services work.
I guess these are my questions:
Should I not worry about the woefully slow speed and just wait another 6 days, when all may be well?
Is it likely that I have been connected to new infrastructure that I should be raising a query with someone to do some qos magic re. the Vision service?
I hope someone can put my mind at rest, cos it just doesn’t seem right to me, and if I get to the end of the 10 days only to be told there is a problem (and possibly put on another 10-day stabilisation period), I won’t be best pleased.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

AS work on the line has been involved then yes it will be in a retraining period just a matter of sitting tight and letting the exchange equipment do its work

  • SSH connection through the Homehub

I'm unsure if this is the correct thread. Sorry if it isn't.
Basically I'm trying to turn off the BTHOMEHUB2's SSH server its hosting. I have an SSH server running on my home network which is facing the internet. At the moment it is setup to use a non standard port and I use port forwarding on the home hub to make it all work. The problem is I need to use port 22 and it is already being used. I cannot see what possible reason there is to have port 22 filtered on the home hub.
Is there a way to turn this off so it can be used by my SSH server instead?
The only reason I'm curious if this can be done is because the BTHOMEHUB gives me the option to port forward SSH from port 22 as a preset application in the port forwarding options. So it must expect I can use port 22.
Thank you in advance for your help
    James

Just as an alternative idea, it might be easier (and indeed partially more secure) if you were to change the port that your SSH server is using and have the hub port forward that port instead.

  • Black ibook is slow connecting to the internet, but powerbook G4 is fine

I recently switched to Timewarner roadrunner internet. It works great for my Powerbook G4, but my wife's ibook loads pages very slowly. She has to refresh constantly (though that hardly works) she turns off the airport and turns it back on. Nothing helps to speed up the loading.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
I'm using the apple airport extreme base station.

Pcpicayo, Welcome to the discussion area!
    There are no black iBooks.
You must be discussing a MacBook. You should ask future questions in the MacBook discussion area.
Try changing the DNS server setting on the MacBook to match the one used on your PowerBook.

  • It shows that my computer is connected to the internet but when I try to load Safari it says I'm not connected

I have reset my router multiple times, and I was connected to the internet just fine before. I have a booster and it was working great until yesterday when it said I was connected to the internet but everytime I tried to load safari it said I wasn't connected. It is working while I am using the hard-line, but I am wondering how to fix the Wi-Fi. I have also reset safari, cleared the cache, and recieved every update.
    Thanks

I too am experiencing an EXTREMELY slow connection to the internet when my PC comes out of sleep. When I check/troubleshoot the connection, I have all green lights, indicating I should be able to get on line, but it takes about 4 or 5 minutes before I can do so. It seems that this problem started shortly after the iCloud (or i Could as another poster said) was loaded. I know its not my ISP, because my wife, who works on an IBM machine gets right on, no problemo. Is there something going on with either the recent update or the i Could (use to be able) addition? Defective software?
    TIA for any response.

  • Connecting Kindle to HomeHub 3

    Hi
I cannot connect a Kindle to Home Hub. Have tried all usual remedies but cannot get any further.
Recently a visitor could not connect their iPhone 4S either. This is a new issue as Kindle used to be OK.
I have a PC wirelessly connected to the HomeHub also and have recently changed the Firewall Protection from Norton to Kaspersky. Could this have something to do with the problem?

  • Snow Leopard Server's slow connection when connected to AirPort Exteme

    Hi,
I've been experiencing slow connections ever since I hooked up my Mac Pro server directly(via ethernet) to my AirPort Extreme. Previously, the Mac Pro is connected to a switch, the AE is connected to this switch as well. Everything's fine until we decided to connect the Mac Pro server to the AE directly. Now we are having slow connection and checking Network Utility, it shows that en0 is receiving errors when previously there is none. I have connected a client computer on the same cable and it receives no errors. It's just the server that's receiving these errors. To clarify thing up my server's network configuration is as follows:
    IP address: 10.0.1.201
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 10.0.1.1
    DNS: 10.0.1.201
    Search domain: example.net
I have configured my DNS server to use 10.0.1.1(AE's IP) as the Forwarder IP address so that my server and other client computers can still connect to the internet.
Checking the client computers connected on the same network, they are experiencing slow connections to the server as well.
There must be something that I need to set on this thing to make things work, any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks and regards,
    Andrew

I forgot to check my cables. Apparently they have used crossed-cable for the previous Mac Pro to switch connection. After connecting the server to our AirPort Extreme things got a little sticky, using a straight cable did the trick.

  • Very slow connection with Mifi 4510L??

I'm hoping someone here can give some guidance. I am having very slow connection with the 4510L we just got. Via test on speedtest.net I'm seeing download speed of .17 MBPS at times it was so slow the test was not completing. I normally have 1 or 2 bars on the mifi unit and have seen up to 3 at times. I drove into town and see the same range (1 to 3 bars). I have yet to see the 4G light come on except for prior to activation (would light solid green at times) since activating I have only seen the violet light for 3G.
Verizon advertises full service both around our city (Richmond, VA) and at my more remote location in Hanover. I have been through the recommended resets and nothing seems to improve the connection speed. Could the unit itself be defective? Also, I've noticed when I go to a location website it thinks I am in Pennsylvania when I am in Virginia. Could the Mifi be trying to connect to a signal in that location for some reason (was refurbished device)
Thanks for any help you can offer,
    Brian

I was having problems but upgrading to 2.28 seems to have helped me in addition to a few other changes I made based on this review of the 4510L
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4500/novatel-wireless-mifi-4510l-review-the-best-4g-lte-wifi-hotspot/4
    1) "selecting WPA2 Personal/PSK (AES)"
    2) "manually selecting a channel (instead of Auto) fixes almost all the instability problems"
(I'm not sure if it actually worked as the diagnostics always shows channel 0 no matter what I picked.  I did try a couple before one - or the myriad of other things I tried - seemed to make a difference - at least for now - fingers crossed)
    3) "allowing for one to select between each network mode manually, so you can force 4G LTE, EVDO, 1xRTT, or all of the above. This is incredibly useful if you’re right at the cutoff for 4G LTE SINR"  (that's WWAN Preferred Mode LTE only for me)
    4) I also changed my 802.11 Mode to just one mode that works on both computers at my house
    5) I am also careful to turn it off when I am done with it and take it off the charger for the night as well.
It is my only internet service due to my semiremote location (no cable etc) and when I first got it as a replacement for my dependable 2200 I was about to pull all my hair out.  I was "forced" into it because due to antenna issues on a local tower that supplies my 3G signal my 2200 wasn't even able to load my gmail account.  Verizon very helpful on that - call us if its still an issue in a "few weeks"!  However, when I inquired about the antenna's effect on a 4G signal, an intelligent tech was able to tell me that it was not the tower I would be getting a 4G signal off of - odd but I didn't question that possibility.
It runs very very warm but I suspect having it on the charger and using it almost all day is part of that.  At first I was wondering if heat was part of the problem - going so far as to have it sitting on an ice pack to test that theory.  Of course then I had to wonder if maybe I was freezing it -lol.  I am careful to turn it off when I am done with it and take it off the charger for the night as well.
I've been on it most of the day and it seems to be behaving well - so fingers crossed

  • Keep getting "You are not connected to the Internet"

Hi, been scouring the discussion pages for an answer & so far nothing suggested has worked for me...
I have a MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 and all of a sudden I can't get Internet from my BT HomeHub2. It's worked fine for the best part of 2 years, woke up this morning and although AirPort is connected I get the "Safari can't connect to "www.******.co.uk because your computer isn't connected to the Internet." whenever I try to load any website.
From other discussions I've tried the following to no avail...
    Restart HomeHub & MacBook
Remove AirPort from Network preferences & re-add
    Delete 'SystemPreferences' folder from Finder/Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences & re-start
Perform a System Update for the entire MacBook --- can't do as no Internet connection!!
I know the actual Internet 'supply' from BT is working fine as I'm currently writing this on my iPad2, connected to the HomeHub and can view pages in Safari (my iPhone 4S & partner's iPhone 4 have no issue either)
If its any help, on my Network setting page, where AirPort says connected & a green light, it says I'm connected to my BTHomeHub2-**** with an IP address 192.***.*.**

    1. Power cycle your wireless router and modem.
    2. Renew your DHCP lease (for that matter make sure configure using IPV4 is set to DHCP).  This is found in system preferences, network, advanced.
    3. Create a test location.  Instead of automatic, choose edit location.  Create a test location, then apply.
    4. Try your computer out on a different network (mcdonalds, starbucks, or an apple retail store).  If you computer connects through airport there, you know your computer is fine and the issue is with your ISP or your router.
btw what type of router do you have?  and what type of encryption do you have on it?  a lot of old 3rd party routers with WEP encryption do not like to work with apple computers.

  • Slow connection after 2nd latest upgrade with AUR 8192cu-dkms package

I have a wireless network connection with a "EDUP Ultra-Mini Nano USB 2.0 802.11n 150Mbps Wifi/WLAN Wireless Network Adapter", witch has the rtl8192cu chippset.
From the start I have hade problems with lag, droped packages and slow connection with the original rtl8192cu package. So after a while I installed the 8192cu-dkms package from AUR and it worked prefectly. Before I would just reach speed at between 5 to 60 KB/sec, but after I installed the package I would reach the maximum of ca 800 KB/sec.
After the next to last kernel upgrade (I think it was linux 3.17.3-1-ARCH or 3.16.???-ARCH) the speed droped back down to 15 to 100 KB/sec and it stared to lag. (And yes, I reinstalled 8192cu-dkms everytime I upgraded the kernel.) And the original drivers are still loosing more packages and have slower speed then 8192cu-dkms.
I have other computers on the same network and they allways reach ca 800 KB/sec and I have tried diffirent router settings and I am certain that the problem is with my drivers.
I use wifi-menu to connect to my network, since wpa_supplicant apperantly dosen't work with 8192cu-dkms.
I have tried reinstalling them with no improved results. And I am out of ideas.
Any one have the same problem or a solution?
Is it a good or bad idea to downgrade to the last kernel version were it worked?

This is basically my experience with every Realtek wireless chipset I have ever used on Linux.  Honeslty, if you have the means, get something else.  Realtek does a pretty shitty job writing and maintaining their Linux drivers.
Edit: See this thread for another user's awesome experience of a recent Realtek wireless chipset.
When I was struggling with a rtl8192ce a while back, I remember that there were a few module options that made it run slightly better.  This was basically just to set it to use software encryption, and turn off any and all low power states.

  • Slow connection with OS X 10.7 while trying to access a Windows 2003 server

    Good afternoon:
I am a systems engineer in an enterprise environment that is now deploying Macs and I have been finding that the Macs have a very slow connection to the Windows 2003 server; even after installing all necessry components.
All of the Macs access network services via Active Directory
The issue is the connection speed when trying to access folders on the servers.
Does anyone have any ideas as to speed up this connectivity issue?

Did you resolve this issue? Any links to anwers to this?
    thank you.

When I first installed the software a couple weeks ago I printed a test page just fine as well as one document from the internet.  Now after not using my computer for two weeks when I try to print a message appears saying  'the printer is not conected' and 'searching for printer'. I tried reinstalling the software.  That all worked until the final screen popped up asking if I wanted to print a test page.  I clicked the box that would print the test page but the same box popped up saying that the printer was not connected.  However I know that the printer is connected because the software reinstalled.  During the two weeks I did not use this computer I was using my old computer, and the printer worked just fine on that computer the entire time; it is only not working now that I have gone back to my new computer.  Please can you help me?Thank you.
