Small black icon

Sometimes, in some websites an attempt to download a PDF returns a blank white swindow with a small black icon containing a white "X" in the upper left corner of the screen. What is this icon saying and how do I fix it to download PDFs. I'm using W7 and IE 11.

When I start up my computer, for a second, a small black icon pops up in the bottom left corner of my screen, and disappears again. What is it?

It appears as soon as I've logged in, and sometime when finder starts up. I'm wondering if this is a common thing to happen, or some malicious software starting up.
It appears to be square looking, but is only there for a second, so It's hard to see.

Could simply be the cursor appearing briefly before the graphical user interface shows up. Is it on a black backdrop, or on the grey Apple backdrop with the spinning cogwheel?

Small Black Vertical Lines follow my mouse pointer AND surround all ICONS on my desktop. I just turned on my computer and it showed like this. I already tested my monitor and it's not the monitor.

Looking at websites, it's fine the display but any icons and my pointer and things that move have these lines following! Looking at VIDEO, it's the picture is full of white and black lines though you can see the video just fine.
Any ideas? Thank you!!

I am in Safe Mode now: This is the weirdest thing: A bit from column A AND B:
The display is perfect EXCEPT for two parallel lines of 17, 3 millimeter-long black lines that follow the pointer everywhere it goes.
Get this: my current display is 1024x768, but when I change it to 640x480, the pointer and everything is perfect! (of course, I can only see a fraction of my desktop)
But then again... when I zoom in and out holding down control (in 640x480) the pointer lines appear again, but less lines. They disappear when I re-reset it to 640.
Strange.
But yeah, safe mode is NEAR perfect with the except of the cursor lines. I can screen grab my cursor though to show...

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPad fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Small black squares

I installed mountain lion. When I turn on my computer now I have small black squares that appear on a white screen during startup. They do dissappear and computer still works fine. Is this normal with mountain lion?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

Small black mark on display

Hey,
I noticed a small black mark (looks like a collection of pixels) right near the finder icon at the lower left corner of my display. It's about 2mm in width and 1.5mm in height. It's not something on the actual screen, I tried to clean it off with iKlear, I also restarted the Macbook and it was there even during the restart. I've only had it since December, and I have AppleCare, but I got it from the UK, and I'm in Lebanon for a few months, so I don't know what to do. Is this covered under the warranty, I know an Apple Service store here, but I wanted to know if anyone knows anything about this.

From all I have read, Apple will evaluate dead pixels on a case by case basis and make a decision. If they determine that there are an excessive number of dead pixels or there is some other serious flaw with the display, they will replace the display under warranty. If they determine that the problem is minor and within their tolerance specs, they will not. Different Apple people will have different opinions on this. It's kind of a gray area.
You have nothing to lose by asking. If the spot is truly bothersome to you, you may well be able to get the display replaced. However, if you bought the Mac and the Applecare in the UK, you may need to get it serviced in the UK. I don't really know how that works in your part of the world, so you would have to ask to find out for sure.
You might also want to take photos of it and see if it seems to be getting worse over time. If it is, I would expect that Apple would replace it for you eventually.

I get a small black puzzle looking piece on the lower right side of my 1st thunderbolt monitor when I boot up. It goes away once the computer fully boots, it is only on there for a second or so. Does anyone have a similar issue?

It was a disaster loading up my site as it changed the case of the letters and at first no pages were seen, so I had to go through and change the letters that were supposed to be cap, back to cap in every file. Leliforever, cheek you list of installed add-ons, the Ask toolbar can be installed without the users knowledge.

When I open Nightly all I get is a small black window that says close firefox

I have Nightly installed on a laptop using Windows 7. I have been using it for nearly a year. This afternoon, when I tried to open Nightly, all I got was a small black window saying "close firefox." I used Chrome to get on the web, downloaded the most recent version of Nightly and tried to open it. Same thing happened. How do I get Nightly back?

Any particular reason that you use the ''(sometimes unstable)'' Nightly version, rather than a stable Release version of Firefox?
Nightly isn't intended to be "used", but rather for users to help the Mozilla developers by "testing" each new build and then reporting any Bugs or 'glitches' they may find. Nightly is between 12 and 18 weeks from the release of a new version of Firefox - the Alpha 1 stage which is 6 weeks in duration.

Where is the small ALARM 'icon' in iCal day view Events??

I am almost certain that with iCal 2 (Tiger) when I set an alarm (and I set a lot of alarms)- in the Day view when I looked at the event I could see a small alarm 'icon' or picture or visual indicator (whatever one would call it) that that event indeed had an alarm set.
But for iCal 3.0.6 with Leopard 10.5.6 (which I installed last week) - the events show no indication of whether there is an alarm set or not.
How to get this nice little feature back?
ALSO: Is there a way to do a search to find just events which have an alarm set (i.e. find all events which have alarms)?

I too miss the alarm icon feature, as it is now cumbersome to verify whether an event has an alarm or not.

I have CS5 and when I opened up a particular folder in Bridge, I see only a few thumbnails of my images. The rest are this small blue icon. How do I get my thumbnails back?

In bridge on CS5 there is one folder I opened up today and in that folder I can only see a small percentage of thumbnail previews of the images. The rest are this small blue icon. How do I get my thumbnail previews back? If I click on this icon it will open the image up okay in photoshop but I would like to see my thumbnail image to see what picture I am opening up. Can anyone help?

Adobe media encoder CS4 - alised graphics and small black bars at 480x360 for web---HELP!

I recently installed the CS4 premiere software with Adobe Media encoder. I encode video for the web.
I have been a professional web video producer for over 10 years and have been using adobe products my whole career
My issues are:
1) I can not get clean edges on my graphics when exporting a flash video (.flv or .f4v) using "field order: progressive" as it should be for web output. All my graphics are high quality and I have tryed many formats (.eps, .psd, .gif ,jpg, .pnd) but once I change the field order drop down in the encoder settings to "(none) progressive" the graphics become alised...
2) My videos which are a size of 480x360 now have small black bars at the top and bottom after encoding the original down to 480x360. I have tried to crop the video so the bar go away but the whole video get fuzzy...WTF
I have spent so many hours reading and searching trying to fix these two issued and I am thinking that I am going back to my old software and discrediting the new adobe product every chance i get!!!!!!!!!!
I was previously using premiere pro 1.5, editing video and graphics and then exporting an uncompressed .mov file and then used Flash 8 Video Encoder to render a .flv file. This produced great video with crisp graphics.

I was using the on2VP6 codec at data rates from 275k to 400k with good results. -- with the new CS$ endcoder i am used h.264 at 500k to 700k, video quality looks good but the graphic overlays look like alised crap. In the encoder settings the edges of the graphics get jaged when I make the field order progresive...
I am starting with DV NTSC video at 720x480.
I am going to go back to my old work flow and test it. The settings are a bit different from premiere pro 1.5 to CS4 -- in 1.5 i could export out an unconpressed .mov with square px and then bring that large file to flash media encoder to create the .flv

Blackberry 9300 Small clock icon and fast battery drain

Hello there! My girlfriend's been having problems with her 9300. A couple of days ago, a small clock icon started appearing whenever she would try to use a menu item on her blackberry, or when she would try and turn off the lock. She also found that the battery would drain signifigantly faster, to the point where a full charge won't last a day.
She has no 3rd party apps installed, and has wireless disabled. Yesterday, we took it to the local store and they replaced the battery. When she's had these problems, she's turned the phone off and removed/reinstalled the battery to no effect.

Hi, I had the same problem... I found the solution and the culprit is compression...
Menu >> Option >> Device >> Storage >> Enable Compression...
Disable this and the pain is over... my battery has popped back to normal...

Document freezes when scrolling with small black window.

I am using Adobe Acrobat Pro version 9.1 on Microsoft Windows Vista service pack 1.
On many documents downloaded from the web (eg many academic journal articles) a small black rectangle appears in the lower right hand corner of the acrobat window. The rectangle is black, has a red circle with a white cross on the right hand side (looking like a quit button?), and a progress bar, which fills up with a light blue colour, and words below.
The words progress through:
Deskewing Image...
Rotating Image...
Decomposing page...
After which the rectangle disappears. There may be words before or after that are too quick for me to see.
The rectangle appears at the end of a scroll operation, either by dragging with the hand tool, dragging the scroll bar, or even just using the up and down arrow keys. However, it may not happen if the scrolling movement is short. It also occurs immediately after I change any of the preferences.
I have not seen this happen on any documents that I have made myself (by printing to acrobat from Microsoft Word).
I originally had this problem with version 9.0. Upgrading to 9.1 did not fix it.
When a friend views a document that has this problem on my computer using Acrobat 7 the rectangle does not appear at all and the document scrolls normally.
I am guessing that this is something that could be turned off in the settings. I have not been able to find the setting because I do not know what this "feature" is called.
Google searches for terms such as <"deskewing image" "decomposing page"> does not reveal anything, nor did a forum search here for "decomposing"
Any help would be appreciated.

I have the exact same issue, using Adobe Acrobat Pro v 9.0.0,
the difference is it happens for any document, whether I've made it myself or not.
I generate PDFs all the time from CorelDraw X4 and have to open and check them.
The pause whilst it undergoes the messages Steve described is very annoying.
I read online that removing the three "Reader" plugins from the Programme Files folder might help.
I tried that and it did not help.
