Small footprints?

Cisco sems to be good at 'small carbon footprint', which is all well and good, but...
I have to nail the switches onto the wall because they no longer fit in the d@mn racks!
Not every building has a full-depth rack, unfortunately. In older buildings I have to make do with what was put in for phone patching.
And often, if we don't watch the contractors very carefully, they still sneak in shallow racks today.
And you can't get a full-depth 8U rack.
(For smaller locations)
Having a bunch of 2960 8ports is a mess both in the rack and management wise.
Is it really that difficult to build shallow-depth switches?
I'd love 24port or 48port switches that's no deeper than the stone-age 2950 (9.5" ), even if they were 2U instead of 1U...
Sorry... Just wenting...
(About to start replacing 3750-24port switches with 2960XR-48ports... and in dire need of a shoehorn... )

It seemed to me that switches starting being 45-50cm deep when PoE and stackable switches came out.
You have to think of the features such as stacking, PoE, power stacking, redundant PSU's etc.
If you want all these features, then you are going to get deeper switches to accommodate bigger PSU's and fans etc for cooling.
The can't get wider so they will need to get deeper :)

  • How do I install Tiger with a smaller footprint??

    I seem to run into a problem with re-installing Tiger on my Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66 with a 60GB drive. It says I only have 39.7GB free so how can I install with a smaller footprint without all of the applications that I don't need??

    Hi Dougled, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
    With over 50% free, space is not the cause of your problem. You can safely delete, do a custom install without, unneeded printers and foreign languages. Don't mess with Fonts unless you are sure of yourself.
    A forum search on "install 10.4." will give you lots of suggestions.
    Good Luck, JP

  • Small Footprint Router

    Does anyone know if Cisco offers a device that is capable of performing layer2/3 services (supports T1 cards) that is in a smaller footprint then say the 2800 series.
    Thanks,

    I may suggest to get a 1800 rather than a 1700 as it may get end of lifed in near future.

  • When do WL streams release byte[]. Smaller footprint under JBOSS.

    We have a customer that started having memory issues. When we jprobed, we saw that half the memory usage they were seeing on the client was occupied by the byte[] corresponding to the objects streamed back from the ssb running on the application server. In fact, several calls to different ssbs that return very large amounts of data were responsible for large amounts of data hanging around on the client. I understand that weblogic has to hold onto these data structures to resolve multiple streams of the same object on the server side to the same object on the client. My question is, what controls garbage collection of this data? Under what circumstances will it be released?
    When we ran the same tests under JBOSS the memory footprint was much smaller. If we could understand the BEA mechanism and force the stream to be reset (or do something that indirectly forces the stream to be reset) we would be happy.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.

    Excellent Blog. Thank You
    Small clarification on Step **6) Oracle Home Directory, ...a) Resize the Root Partition**
    Ubuntu 11.10 has Gparted available as a Ubuntu software download, DONT use that while trying the above step, instead download the ISO file from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/ gparted-live-0.12.0-5.iso (124.6 MB)
    Burn that ISO file on a Blank DVD, reboot the Ubuntu , during startup select Boot from DVD Option if not already selected. this will take to Boot Menu Options of Gparted Live then select the first menu option, and this allows to do further action such as Re-sizing .
    and once you have chosen and executed step a) . do NOT run step b) also that is "Setup External Storage"
    I hope this minor clarification can avoid some confusion

  • Small footprint WebAs 7.

    My goal is to test a J2EE 1.3 compliant application against WebAs 7 (not the JEE 5 version). I have downloaded the SAP Netweaver 2004s SR2 (SP9) Developer Workplace. Although this is the "smallest" Java stack available, the footprint is still significant. Following note 739788 and 781882 I have tried to disable all features other than J2EE 1.3.
    Nevertheless, the server still needs 20 mins to start (1GB RAM, 2GHz CPU) and seems to require significant memory. I remember that in the past there was a tiny WebAs 6.40 Java only, without portal. This one had a decent resource consumption. Also the new JEE 5 server comes with a decent footprint, but I need to test vs. J2EE 1.3.
    Is there a "smaller" WebAS 7 (J2EE 1.3, no portal) somewhere? Or any other options to boost startup performance.
    Regards KB

    Hi Klaus,
    There should be an option to skip portal installation in the SAPInst (Usage Types). (Although it may be required for Developer Workplace architecture)

  • IPv4 private addressing tradeoff: small footprint vs even VLSM length?

    Is minimising one's use of the private address space to avoid unnecesary potential overlap worth the hassle of having un-even VLSM lengths?
    I am designing my first non-trivial IPv4 addressing scheme in the 10.0.0.0/8 range.  Just two small branch offices, but on the access-layer, I'm putting servers, printers, desktops and phones onto separate VLANs.  (In fact, when doing L3 at the access-layer, you can quickly end up with multiple VLANs).
    Now, few of these VLANs are so big that they'll need a /24 all to themselves.  In fact, a /27 for phones and printers will be fine.  I'll give a /24 to desktops because 255.255.255.0 is the only mask which semi-technical users understand.  Maybe a /25 for servers, which gives a bit of room for further subnetting and putting VMs onto their own VLANs.
    I'll summarise each site over DMVPN as a /21 subnet.  Neat.
    But at each site the routing tables look messy, with the router sporting addresses like 10.9.13.129/27 and there isn't any real pattern between the L3 address and the VLAN number.
    Why don't I just dole out /24's to each VLAN,  After all, I'm hardly going to minimise conflict with private IP addresses chosen by prospective partners by using /20's instead of /21's for each site (right?), and even if they do, NAT can handle all these situations elegantly (right?).
    What about you, would you minimise your footprint in the address space and deal with 'unevenness' in subnet sizes?  Or would you be easier on your eyes now and simply bite the bullet if you had to NAT one day?
    thanks!
    David.
    Message was edited by: David Bullock - tries to get the crux of the question closer to the top of text.

    I chose Alessio's as the 'correct' answer, since it mentioned route summarisation.  But both answers were correct in the sense that they were quite reasonable.
    In the end, I decided to go wtih my varying-length VLSM approach, to keep the address-sprawl at each site confined to a /21 subnet.  I don't find the varying-length VLSM to be much of an nuisance in practice.  I miss out on being able to make the 3rd octet 'line up' with the VLAN, but I feel that's a pretty delicate affair anyhow.  Some person just has to give VLAN100 as a 'best practice' for the Voice VLAN, for example, and you either start working with a /17 at each site (minimally), or abandon your numbering scheme.  You'd really have to go with a /16 for each site to ensure you can number 254 VLANs in this fashion.  And that means for each site that you chose, there's a 1-in-256 chance you'll pick the same second octet as someone else.  With my scheme, there is a 1 in 8192 chance that I'll pick the same address range, so I've decreased the likelyhood of a conflict by a factor of 32.
    At the end of the day though, so long as route summarisation works, all other considerations seem to be a matter of taste.

  • Installation How-to for minimal/small footprint Adobe Reader & Firefox Plugin

    I need to install Adobe Reader & Firefox Plugin in a small Linux based environment.
    As a proof-of-concept, I downloaded and installed the AdbeRdr9.4.7-1_i486linux_enu.bin
    to an NFS share mounted to the Linux thinclient. That worked -- eg, the plugin was available
    to the browser so the OS will support that build. However, the client does not have much
    writable 'disk' space available and using any type of share (NFS/Samba) is not an option in
    the production environment.
    I need to use the plugin from within Firefox (6.0+) and have to be able to print via CUPS.
    DIsk space available is less than 50Mb, preferrably a lot less!
    Is there a guide available for a mimimal installation?
    Any sugguestions as to what files/directories I have to copy to the local filesystem for
    * an absolute minimum ?
    * a bit more if there's room?
    Suggestions / pointers appreciated..
    Tom

    First - what version of Adobe Reader do you have?
    And now it gets a little bit complicated.  Adobe Reader can be a plugin to Internet Explorer, and it crashes when you try to open an online PDF document.  That is not unknown; it happens sometimes.
    But when you open the standalone Adobe Reader, it also crashes with a plugin error.  This time it must be a plugin to Adobe Reader, not Internet Explorer.
    Furthermore you write "the same plugin error window pops up" - so I can only assume that it is a Reader plugin that crashes, not the IE plugin.
    What I would try in your situation:
    open Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall Adobe Reader;
    open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader and delete all plugin... folders;
    reinstall Adobe Reader from http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.3.3/enu/AdbeRdr933_en_US.exe
    The path in the second line above could also be ...\Reader 8.0\... depending on your Reader version.

  • Any Chance on a Smaller Footprint Mac Pro?

    I prefer the Mac Pro to the iMac for upgradability and separation from the Monitor. But the Mac Pro is enormous. I like more of a mid-size case. In my normal setups, I run 3 harddisks and 2 optical drives all of which fit nicely in a midsize case. I don't need all of the server level expansion capabilities and would be willing to sacrifice them for a more compact unit.

    Sorry, but no one outside of Apple knows anything about future product releases. Anything anyone here would post would be pure speculation which isn't allowed here (the Discussions are for technical support on existing products). There are a number of rumor sites which you can read, but as to whether any rumors they report have any validity, your guess will be as good as ours.
    But have you looked inside a Mac Pro? There's really not much room to compact the system without losing the expandability (slots, drive bays, and that second optical drive bay). The MP is only an inch larger than my Dell minitower (not counting the MP's handles), so while it looks huge, it's really not significantly larger than any other full minitower.

  • What is the best photo printer with a small footprint and moderate price

    That "works" with Snow Leopard. I have a Canon i70 for years that only works erratically since upgrading. Wireless would be great or USB for my computer with wireless communication to my daughter laptop mac (she has Leopard and I have Snow Leopard) I am soooo tired of printer problems with my iMac (or my printer per se related to my iMac) Please working certitude is a Must! Thanks very much. d

    What i'm looking for is exactly that: subjectivity, i.e, the specific experiences of Mac users and "their" printer:Snow Leopard marriages. Thus the discussion boards first followed by review research via my myriad Mac bookmarked sites. I'm scared of purchasing based on a magazine, Apple store employee, etc only to find out there are really SL glitches. d

  • Carbon footprint of an in-memory applicance

    Hi,
    can you make any estimation on the carbon footprint, or performance/watt ratio,  of an in-memory database (or applicance)?
    Keeping all data in memory, i.e. online,  could require more power than keeping only the data with frequent access and putting all other data on discs, i.e. offline.

    It's an interesting question. I will just add my personal view.
    First, in-memory databases use disks (or SSD) to persist data. There can also be a distinction between hot (always in-memory) and cold data (only read from disk to memory when needed). So just looking at "more memory uses more power" is not going to cut it.
    Secondly, the a single SAP In-memory Appliance might be able to replace several traditional servers. For example, the next version could be used as a database server for SAP NetWeaver BW and replace a BW Accelerator appliance. Future versions of the in-memory appliance will consolidate database and application servers. Overall you will need less hardware i.e. consume less power.
    Finally, power consumption of hardware components like CPUs and memory is basically being reduced with every new hardware generation. Since the in-memory appliance uses very current hardware (for example, Intel CPUs), it's save to assume that you get pretty energy efficient solutions.
    In summary, I would say an in-memory solution has a significantly smaller footprint than comparable other solutions.

  • Small weblogic.jar for jms/j2ee clients of weblogic

              We are trying to create a smaller footprint for the ~38M weblogic.jar for distribution
              to our client applications to use the JMS and J2EE features of Weblogic 7.0sp2.
              I attempted to use the whitepaper document distributed by BEA for creating a smaller

    Hi Ashish,
              I've personally used the "URL" class loader option with success,
              and I know that several customers have also used this option, as

  • Memory footprint

    hi,
    i have seen lot of mobile database vendors advertise their product's memory footprint. however, have found no corresponding information about oracle lite besides the official "oracle database lite is a small footprint, java enabled....".
    so the million dollar question is...what is the memory footprint of oracle lite 9i and 10g?

    We use pocket PC devices, and the oracle lite foot print itself has not been an issue.
    By default the databases will be created in the following locations
    1) SD or CF card
    2) built in storage (eg: DELL's)
    3) main memory
    Main memory is fastest, but can be more fragile (try dropping an IPAQ), but provided you use a fast SD card like Kingston 45x, the differential is minimal, and the size of the card and relative cost provides a lot of advantages (we tend to go for a minimum of 256 MB which should be plenty for normal applications.

  • HD export as small as possible

    Hello Guys,
    I've been strugging with finding a way to export a HD video as small as possible with a decent quality. It would be nice to get this about 10MB for 1 min but my video is way bigger than it, about 40MB for 1 min...It would be very thanksful if you guys help me out.
    Here is how I set up this video:
    Since I have some opening and ending movies (frame size: 1280 720, frame rate 25.00 fps), I choose the AVCHD 720p25 at the beginning when one has to set up a sequence.
    To export the video, I choose H.264 as Format and HDTV 720p 25 High Quality as Preset.
    Then I've got a movie which is 40MB for 1 min.
    I have been also trying to find a decent way to export it as small as possible by changing a bunch of settings but I haven't got any good results yet.
    Besides, I have used MPED Streamclip to compress or convert the video but it's made the video small enough so far..
    I'm very looking forward to your reply.
    Thanks.

    The smaller the file, the lower the quality.
    If you want smaller, don't use the High Quality setting, but use Low Quality.
    It is either or in this case. Either a smaller footprint and lower quality, or a larger footprint and a higher quality.
    If you don't export at all, the footprint will be as small as you can get, nil.

    i just have to run itunes with bonjour service off... no need for it but this worked fine until last update never ever had an issue for years until the last version of itunes.
    good luck folks because these are exact same errors in event viewer that started on last update:
    posted this in itunes forum but the only way i can stop error from piling up in event viewer is turning off Bonjour Service from Automatic to Disabled
    the errors come in blocks of 4 (with non consecutive numbers 540-544-548-536) when i start itunes for my iphone 3gs
    this is a clean install of windows 7 professional 64 bit
    never had a problem with itunes... nothing ever logged in event viewr thru xp/vista ultimat 64 bit and windows 7 until 3/31/2010 update of itunes which i never should have done... no ipad! 9.1.079 previous version 9.03 worked like a champ fast iphone backups that were like 2 minutes and now it looks as if it's freezing at times but its just going super slow like 6-8 minutes.

    have had bonjour messages before but back with vista last year...new machine running solid and steadt windows 7 64 bit with a reliabilty rating from administrative tools of 10 for past months prior to this update...anyone seeing this and if so is there a fix?
    first few backups took for ever on my iphone 3gs..... most go quickly again now.
    don't sync too many things other than videos.
    as a side note to any user who might be able to help.... i only sync "sync only checked songs and videos" in iTunes on "Summary" tab Devices>Mark's iPhone
    looking in windows firewal bonjour has pretty much free reign inbound and outbound.
    i use nav 2010 antivirus which unlike older versions has been great since 2009 redesign (small footprint and very little resource use) although with 12gbs ram at 1600 i don't get any issues with apps eating ram.
    really would like to get to the bottom of this error as i like running a lean,mean running machine.
    based on google responses i am amoung the many windows users who have had more issues with this poor apple release update than any i can remember.
    so after all this is there another version of bonjour that will work with windows 7? like previous version i could install after cleaning out the new one.

    Brian68,
    I agree the basic line charge is what is making it worse for those that just want a phone (dumb phone).
    Your reasoning that it will only cost an additional $20 is not quite the way I see it.  You are forgetting that additional data will be needed for the phones.  In other words I would need to up the data to 9-10GB.  That's an additional $10-20 per month.  So I would be going from $180/mo to $260/mo for total of $1920 over a 24 mo period.  Not to mention I would likely be paying a considerable amount for the phones as the dicounted price goes down significantly as you add lines.  That being the case, factor in another $500 or so bringing the total extra cost at $2420.
    When you do the math the absurdity of the pricing becomes more clear.

    ...i) Unix vi cursor keys
    ...j) Backup Database
    h4. 11) History
    h4. 12) References
    h2. 1) Install Linux Ubuntu
    The following assumes you have installed Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop Edition for AMD 64-bit, or upgraded from a previous version. Keep in mind that Oracle 11gR2 Express Edition is only available for 64-bit architecture. It is not necessarily a requirement, but I would not bother to install Oracle 11gR2 XE on a system with less than 2 GB of RAM installed. You can download Ubuntu for free at: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu and install it using the default settings provided.
    You can apply the latest OS patch-sets by clicking the power button icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen and selecting "Updates available..."
    h2. 2) Remote Terminal
    You will need command line access to perform the installation tasks. Select the top "Dash Home" button of the Unity toolbar and enter the word "terminal", or use CTRL-ALT-t. If you prefer to open a remote terminal session use SSH. Ubuntu does not come with a secure shell login by default. To install it, use the following command:
    sudo apt-get install openssh-serverYou cannot login as root unless you set a root password using the "sudo passwd root" command. However, you can get root user access using the "sudo" command, which requires only to re-enter the password of your personal account. Access to "sudo" is controlled by the /etc/sudoers file.
    The best way to establish a remote command line session as root is to login with your personal account, e.g.: ssh [email protected], and then type "sudo su -" to become root, or use "sudo <command>" to execute individual commands. If your account does not have "sudo" access you can login as root using "su - root", but will need to know the root password.
    h2. 3) Install Additional Software
    Oracle 11g Express Edition requires additional software that is not installed by default:
    sudo apt-get install alien libaio1 unixodbch2. 4) Managing Swap Space
    Oracle demands that the minimum swap space for Oracle Database XE is 2 GB (2095100 KB) or twice the size of RAM, whichever is lesser. Enter the following shell command to verify your swap space:
    cat /proc/meminfo | grep -i swap
    SwapCached:            0 kB
    SwapTotal:       2095100 kB
    SwapFree:        2095100 kBYou can increase available swap space by using a swap file as long as disk space permits. The advantage of a swap file versus a swap partition is flexible space management because you can add or delete swap space on demand as necessary. The following will create and enable an additional 1 GB swap file at system startup, located in the /home directory:
    Login as root:
    sudo su -Enter the following commands:
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/home/swapfile bs=1024 count=1048576
    mkswap /home/swapfile
    swapon /home/swapfile
    swapon -aCreate a backup of the original "fstab" file and add the new swap file:
    cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.backup_`date +%N`
    echo '/home/swapfile swap swap defaults 0 0' >> /etc/fstabExit from root and verify the new swap space:
    exit
    swapon -s
    Filename                    Type          Size     Used     Priority
    /dev/sda5                               partition     2095100     0     -1
    /home/swapfile                          file          1048572     0     -2Swap space is not a substitute for installed RAM. Swap space is a safeguard that allows the system to move idle processes to disk before the OOM killer will begin to terminate processes in order to free up enough real memory to keep the system operational. The general rule for sizing the swap space depends on the size of installed RAM. If your system has less then 4 GB of RAM the swap space should usually be at least twice this size. If you have more than 8 GB of RAM installed you may consider to use an equal size as swap space. The more RAM you have installed, the less likely you are going to run into memory starvation, and the less likely you are going to need swap space, unless you have a bad process.
    h2. 5) Modify Kernel Parameters
    Oracle 11gR2 Express Edition requires the following Kernel parameters. Enter the commands exactly as shown:
    Login as root:
    sudo su -Cut & paste the following directly into a command shell (not a text editor):
    cat > /etc/sysctl.d/60-oracle.conf <<-EOF
    # Oracle 11g XE kernel parameters
    fs.file-max=6815744
    net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range=9000 65500
    kernel.sem=250 32000 100 128
    # kernel.shmmax=429496729
    kernel.shmmax=107374183
    EOFLoad and verify the new kernel parameters:
    service procps start
    sudo sysctl -q fs.file-max
    sudo sysctl -q kernel.shmmax
    sudo sysctl -q net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range
    sudo sysctl -q kernel.sem The SHMMAX kernel parameter defines the upper memory limit of a process. It is a safeguard to stop a bad process from using all memory and causing RAM starvation. The Linux default is 32 MB. The official Oracle XE installation documentation suggests a value of 4 GB -1 bytes (429496729). Since Oracle 11g XE has a 1 GB memory limit, a smaller footprint will be a better safeguard for the complete system. Setting the SHMMAX parameter to 107374183 will be sufficient.
    h2. 6) Oracle Home Directory
    At the time of this writing, Enterprise Linux 6 is not supported for Oracle database yet. It is therefore not possible to confirm Oracle ext4 filesystem compatibility, which is default in Ubuntu 11. According to various information, ext4 may cause a performance problem for Oracle 11g database. The following will show you how to add a ext3 partition to your existing setup.
    h3. 6.a) Resize the Root Partition
    Provided you have sufficient free disk space, you should be able to resize the root partition to create an extra ext3 filesystem. Considering the 11 GB user datafile limit of the Express Edition, 18 GB should be more than enough.
    You can use the free Gparted Live CD to shrink your startup volume. Gparted downloads are available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable. When burning the CD, pay attention to burn the raw .iso image and not the possibly "mounted" image. If you are using a virtual machine like Oracle Virtualbox, you can mount the .iso image directly. There are going to be a few prompts when the system starts from the CD, but you can press Return to accept the defaults.
    When the Gparted window appears:
    - Select your ext4 root partition, usually /dev/sda1
    - Select the "Resize/Move" button from the toolbar.
    - Enter 18000 into the "Free space following" field and press the Return key.
      Be careful not not change the start of the partition!
    - Click the "Resize/Move" of the dialog and then then the "Apply" toolbar button.
      The process may take several minutes - do not abandon it!
    - Select the new unallocated free space of ~ 18 GB and push the "New" button.
    - Set the file system to "ext3" and label it "oraclexe" and click the "Add" button.
      Be sure to label it oraclexe, otherwise the follow-up instructions will fail.
    - Finally select "Apply from the toolbar to apply the changes.
    - Quit "Gparted", select "Exit" from the desktop and choose "Reboot" to restart the system.
    {code}
    After the system has restarted, open a terminal command shell.
    Login as root:
    {code}
    sudo su -
    {code}
    Backup "fstab" and add the UUID of the partition. The "tr" command remove the quotes:
    {code}
    cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab_`date +%N`
    uuid=`blkid | grep oraclexe | awk '{print $3}'`
    uuid=`echo $uuid | tr -d '\042'`
    echo $uuid
    echo "$uuid  /u01  ext3  errors=remount-ro 0 1" >> /etc/fstab
    {code}
    The UUID is a unique number and should look similar to:
    {code}
    UUID=d1db753e-b5dd-4a4c-a61e-259c69867b58
    {code}
    Restart the system:
    {code}
    reboot
    {code}
    Verify the success:
    {code}
    df -h /u01
    {code}
    h3. 6.b) Setup External Storage
    If you prefer to setup an external drive to install Oracle XE, beware that it can be a fatal mistake to make an entry in /etc/fstab to automount your external storage device.  An unavailable device in /etc/fstab will prevent a system startup and prompt for appropriate actions at the console.
    The following is an example of how to prepare an external storage device to be used for Oracle 11g, including a script to automatically mount an external drive at system startup without the disadvantages of /etc/fstab. The script will also take into consideration that a device name might shift if you attach additional devices.
    To find out which USB devices are connected:
    {code}
    sudo parted -l
    {code}
    Look for the device that matches your USB storage. For example: /dev/sdb1
    {code}
    Model: USB 2.0 Flash Disk (scsi)
    Disk /dev/sdb: 2064MB
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
    Partition Table: gpt
    Number  Start   End     Size    File system  Name     Flags
    1      20.5kB  1929MB  1929MB  hfs+         mystick
    {code}
    Initialize the device using ext3 filesystem - this will erase all data. The "-c" option will check for bad blocks (read-only), "-L" is the volume label:
    {code}
    sudo umount /dev/sdb1
    sudo mkfs.ext3 -c -L oraclexe /dev/sdb1
    {code}
    Install the pmount distribution package:
    {code}
    sudo apt-get install pmount
    {code}
    Login as root:
    {code}
    sudo su -
    {code}
    Cut & paste the following into the command prompt (not a text editor):
    {code}
    cat > /etc/init.d/oracle-mount <<-EOF
    #! /bin/sh
    # /etc/init.d/oracle-mount
    VOL_UUID=alphanumeric
    VOL_LABEL=oraclexe
    VOL_SYMLINK=/u01
    mount=/usr/bin/pmount
    uuid2dev() {
       VOL_DEVICE="\`blkid | grep \$VOL_UUID | awk '{print \$1}'\`"
       VOL_DEVICE="\`echo \$VOL_DEVICE | tr -d ':'\`"
       echo \$VOL_DEVICE

    h2. 7) ORA-00845: MEMORY_TARGET
    Oracle 11gR2 XE under Ubuntu 11.10 will result in "ORA-00845: MEMORY_TARGET not support on this system" either at Oracle database startup or during the initial installation. Ubuntu 11.10 uses a new version of the "systemd" system and session manager and has migrated away from /dev/shm and other common directories in favor of /run.
    There are several ways how to address the problem. You can either enable /dev/shm shared memory, or change the default memory management of Oracle 11g from AMM (Automatic Memory Management) to ASMM (Automatic Shared Memory Management) as it was in used the previous 10g version. Since AMM is one of the new features of 11g, the following will show you how to make to make AMM work.
    Login as root:
    {code}
    sudo su -
    {code}
    Cut & paste the following into the command prompt (not a text editor):
    {code}
    cat > /etc/init.d/oracle-shm <<-EOF
    #! /bin/sh
    # /etc/init.d/oracle-shm
    case "\$1" in
      start)
        echo "Starting script /etc/init.d/oracle-shm"
        # Run only once at system startup
        if [ -e /dev/shm/.oracle-shm ]; then
          echo "/dev/shm is already mounted, nothing to do"
        else
          rm -f /dev/shm
          mkdir /dev/shm
          mount -B /run/shm /dev/shm
          touch /dev/shm/.oracle-shm
        fi
      stop)
        echo "Stopping script /etc/init.d/oracle-shm"
        echo "Nothing to do"
        echo "Usage: /etc/init.d/oracle-shm {start|stop}"
        exit 1
    esac

    {code}
    Install the oracle-shm init script:
    {code}
    chmod 755 /etc/init.d/oracle-shm
    update-rc.d oracle-shm defaults 01 99
    {code}
    Restart the system:
    {code}
    reboot
    {code}
    Verify the success:
    {code}
    sudo cat /etc/mtab | grep shm
    {code}
    {code}
    none /run/shm tmpfs rw,nosuid,nodev 0 0
    /run/shm /dev/shm none rw,bind 0 0
    {code}
    The upper limit of shared memory under Linux is set to 50 % of the installed RAM by default. If your system has less than 2 GB of RAM installed, there is still a chance to run into ORA-00845 error if your shared memory is used by other software.
    The verify available shared memory, type the following commands:
    {code}
    sudo df -h /run/shm
    {code}
    h2. 8) Installing Oracle 11gR2 Express Edition
    The final release version of Oracle 11gR2 Express Edition can be downloaded for free at http://otn.oracle.com/database/express-edition/downloads. The software should automatically downloaded into the "Downloads" folder of your home directory.
    Enter the following commands to unpack the installer:
    {code}
    cd ~/Downloads
    unzip oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm.zip
    rm oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm.zip
    {code}
    The Debian Linux based package management of Ubuntu is not compatible with the Red Hat package manager. The Oracle installer needs to be converted using the following commands:
    {code}
    cd ~/Downloads/Disk1
    sudo alien --to-deb --scripts oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm
    (This may take a few minutes)
    rm oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm
    {code}
    The following needs to be set for compatibility:
    {code}
    sudo ln -s /usr/bin/awk /bin/awk
    sudo mkdir /var/lock/subsys
    {code}
    Ubuntu uses different tools to manage services and system startup scripts. The "chkconfig" tool required by the Oracle installer is not available in Ubuntu. The following will create a file to simulate the "chkconfig" tool.
    Login as root:
    {code}
    sudo su -
    {code}
    Copy & paste the following *directly* into the command prompt to create a file:
    {code}
    cat > /sbin/chkconfig <<-EOF
    #!/bin/bash
    # Oracle 11gR2 XE installer chkconfig hack for Debian based Linux (by dude)
    # Only run once.
    echo "Simulating /sbin/chkconfig..."
    if [[ ! \`tail -n1 /etc/init.d/oracle-xe | grep INIT\` ]]; then
    cat >> /etc/init.d/oracle-xe <<-EOM

    Set execute privileges:
    {code}
    sudo chmod 755 /sbin/chkconfig
    {code}
    Install Oracle 11gR2 Express Edition entering the following commands:
    {code}
    cd ~/Downloads/Disk1
    sudo dpkg --install ./oracle-xe_11.2.0-2_amd64.deb
    (This may take a couple of minutes)
    {code}
    Run the configuration script to create (clone) the database and follow the screen. Accept the default answers, including "y" to startup the database automatically, or modify as required.
    {code}
    sudo /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure
    (This can take a few minutes - the installation completed successfully.)
    {code}
    To verify success, the procedure should end showing:
    {code}
    Starting Oracle Net Listener...Done
    Configuring database...Done
    Starting Oracle Database 11g Express Edition instance...Done
    Installation completed successfully.
    {code}
    Set a password for the Oracle account:
    {code}
    sudo passwd oracle
    {code}
    h2. 9) Post-Installation
    In order to use sqlplus and other tools, the Oracle account requires specific environment variables. The following will set these variables automatically at every Oracle login:
    Login as the Oracle user:
    {code}
    su - oracle
    {code}
    Copy the default account skeleton files and add the Oracle env script to .profile:
    {code}
    cp /etc/skel/.bash_logout ./
    cp /etc/skel/.bashrc ./
    cp /etc/skel/.profile ./
    echo "" >>./.profile
    echo '. /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe/bin/oracle_env.sh' >>./.profile
    {code}
    By default, the Oracle Database XE graphical user interface is only available at the local server, but not remotely. The following will enable remote logins:
    Login as the Oracle user:
    {code}
    su - oracle
    {code}
    Login as SYSDBA and execute the following:
    {code}
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    SQL> EXEC DBMS_XDB.SETLISTENERLOCALACCESS(FALSE);
    exit
    {code}
    See http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17781_01/admin.112/e18585/toc.htm for more information.
    h3. a) Unity desktop configurations
    The Oracle XE menu under the previous Gnome Classic desktop shows several useful scripts to backup the database, start and stop the database, etc. Under the Unity based desktop this menu is not available. You can either switch to the Gnome Classic desktop as outlined in chapter 2, or perform the following steps to modify and copy the scripts as outlined below. The start and stop database scripts will also be modified to perform a progress feedback.
    Login as user root:
    {code}
    sudo su -
    {code}
    Convert desktop files:
    {code}
    cd /usr/share/applications
    sed -i 's/Categories.*/Categories=Database;Office;Development;/g' oraclexe*
    sed -i 's/MultipleArgs/X-MultipleArgs/g' oraclexe*
    sed -i 's/MimeType.*/MimeType=application\/x-database/g' oraclexe*
    sed -i 's/.png//g' oraclexe*
    sed -i 's/Terminal=false/Terminal=true/g' oraclexe-startdb.desktop
    sed -i 's/Terminal=false/Terminal=true/g' oraclexe-stopdb.desktop
    {code}
    Exit root:
    {code}
    exit
    {code}
    Login as user Oracle:
    {code}
    su - oracle
    {code}
    Modify database start and stop scripts:
    {code}
    cd /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe/config/scripts
    cp startdb.sh start.sh_orig
    cp stopdb.sh stopdb.sh_orig
    sed -i 's/>.*//g' startdb.sh
    sed -i 's/>.*//g' stopdb.sh
    {code}
    You will need SYSDBA privileges and set Oracle environment variables in order to use your regular user account.
    Login to your regular user account:
    {code}
    su - dude
    {code}
    Enter the folowing command:
    {code}
    sudo usermod -a -G dba dude
    {code}
    Then update your profile to automatically set the necessary Oracle environment variables:
    {code}
    echo "" >>./.profile
    echo '. /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe/bin/oracle_env.sh' >>./.profile
    {code}
    Update your Desktop folder to contain useful Oracle XE scripts:
    {code}
    cp /usr/share/applications/oraclexe* ~/Desktop
    chmod 750 ~/Desktop/oraclexe*
    {code}
    To verify success re-login and try "sqlplus":
    {code}
    su - oracle
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    {code}
    h2. 10) Tips and Troubleshooting
    h3. 10. a) Port 1521 appears to be in use by another application
    Error: Port 1521 appears to be in use by another application. Specify a different port.This error happens after a previously unsuccessful configuration attempt using /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure script. The script was able to start the Listener process, but most likely failed to continue  to clone the database, e.g. ORA-00845. The following should correct the problem:
    Determine the oracle listener process that is already running:
    {code}
    $ ps -ef | grep oracle
    {code}
    Your output should be similar to:
    {code}
    oracle   19789     1  0 19:46 ?        00:00:00 /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe/bin/tnslsnr
    {code}
    Then kill the process, using the appropriate process id, for instance:
    {code}
    $ sudo kill -9 19789
    {code}
