Smart Collection Problem

Lightroom 2.2, Mac Pro, Mac OS 10.5.5, 2.8 Quad-Core Intel, 6GB RAM
I went to use the "recently modified" Smart Collection that comes with Lightroom 2, and changed the "Edit Date is in the last" days value from the default (which I think was 2) to 7. When I did that, I got photos in the smart collection which were last edited 2 years ago. I tried fiddling with the edit date settings, but I kept getting items in the collection last edited years ago rather than days ago. I verified this by looking at the metadata for the files in the collection.
I also checked the files last-modified time in the Finder, which matched the meta data, which was a couple of years ago.
Has anyone else seen this? Is there a workaround/fix?
Thanks!
-Eric

I also have a problem Smart Collections. Pre Lightroom, my folder structure on my hard drive for images was date with brief description (ex. 08_0108_NYC). I have keep that system in place since using Lightroom. I tried to set up Smart Collections that would be all folders from each month (ex. "folder name starts with 08_01"). It will show no folders. But if the folder is named with a dash instead of an underscore it works correctly. Smart Collections can find file names with underscores, why not folders?
Thanks,
JB

  • Smart Collection Problem - LR 5.6

I have a smart collection for files where metadata has been changed. This helps me ensure that the changes can be saved to files on disk.
Recently I have noticed that this collection has started showing large numbers of files (800+), where the data needs to be saved to disk. If I select all of these files and then save to disk, they all disappear one by one, then when the collection is empty they all start reappearing again, until they are all back again.
I have tried optimizing my catalogue, closing and reopening, rebooting etc. The criteria for the collection is where "Metadata status has been changed". The collection works OK for new files imported, it is just that has started including a large number of false positives, which I can't get rid of.
Lightroom 5.6 on Windows 7 x64. Catalogue has 32,304 entries.
    Any suggestions anybody?
    Ian

    Thanks for the suggestion.
Do you mean writing the data to XMP sidecar files? I would love to have an option to automatically write my metadata to my DNG file, but would prefer to avoid sidecar files if at all possible, but if I can't fix the problem it is something I might have to consider.

  • Smart Collection criteria problem

In a smart collection I set the parameters to:
The problem is that it now adds all images with "Cascade" and "Valleys" and "Byway" to the collection.  I need for it to only add the images with the exact phrased keyword:  "Cascade Valleys Byway"
The other images have keywords like Cascade range, central valleys or scenic byway and I don't want those images in the collection.
Are there certain keys to add to the smart collection to get it to do this?  It seems like one of the choices when setting up should by to contain exactly.
    Thanks for any clues.
    Patrick

Thanks, I figured I'd have to dance around it to get it to work but you gave me the clues.  Now I set it up like this:
But changed my keyword adding underscores and ticking the Export Synonyms, adding the correct keywords for export there.  It seems to work.

  • Smart Collection Keyword Problem

I'm having a problem with smart collections.  I do bird photography and am trying to catalog my bird images.  I created a collection set called Birds, and I created sub-collection sets for various species.  Smart collections by and large do a good job of pulling images into the proper smart collections based upon keywords I've assigned to images.  But I'm having a problem with a couple of keywords.
I have a collection set called Ducks, and inside I have the different duck species set up as smart collections.  The rules for the smart collection for a given species are simple.  For Harlequin Duck, the rule is: Keywords, Contains Words, Harlequin Duck.  All of my Harlequin Duck images are correctly pulled into that smart collection.  But if I try to create a smart collection called Long-Tailed Duck using the same rule structure, no images show up.  The same goes for the smart collection called Wood Duck: no images are pulled into the smart collection.  However, if I change the rule for Long-Tailed Duck to: Keywords, Contains All, Long-Tailed Duck, all of the images appear in the smart collection.  This also works for the Wood Duck collection.  If I look at the Keyword list on the right of the screen, both of the problem keywords are there and you can see the correct number of images next to the keyword.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug?  How can I fix this problem?  Thanks for your help!

Contains All - Treats the input as multiple "word fragments" and matches any photo that has a keyword that contains all of the "word fragments", even if only in part (i.e. as substring).
For example: If you have two photos:
Photo A, with: 'Big Mallard Ducks'
Photo B, with: 'Small Mallard Ducks'
    Then Contains All:
'allar uck ig' will match photo A, but not B.
    'allar uck' will match both.
'Contains Words' is confusing as heck - I took a whack then realized I was wrong. Maybe somebody else can educate us both.
I just did this test - I have a photo with the keyword:
    'Big Mallard Ducks'
    then Contains Words:
    Big - matches
    Mallard - matches
    Big Mallard - matches
    Mallard Big - matches
Big Mallard Ducks - does not
    Mallard Ducks - does not
    Ducks Mallard - does not
    Big Ducks - does not
    Ducks - does not
Straight from the latest help file: Contains Words
Searches for text that contains all specified alphanumeric sequences as whole words. To find photos with the keyword flower using a Contains Word search, for example, type flower.
    Here's another question for y'all:
Is 'Contains Words' broken? - I'd have to say it is...

  • Problems with smart collection "doesn't contain"

I have photos with keywords like
    xxxxx, grand canyon,xxxxx
    xxxxx, grand island, xxxxx
    xxxxx, grand sable dunes, xxxxx
What I need is the abilty creat a smart collection that excludes grand canyon, but leaves in grand island, grand sable dunes
I can't get doesn't contain to work with
    grand canyon
    "grand canyon"
    Any ideas?

Tudor asks, "What I need is the ability to create a smart collection that excludes grand canyon, but leaves in grand island, grand sable dunes".   Tudor wants to exclude "grand canyon", but include "grand island", "grand sable dunes", "red rock canyon", and presumably every other keyword except "grand canyon".
    BKKDon's suggestion of
Match all: Keywords contains grand; Keywords doesn't contain canyon
doesn't quite work, because it excludes "red rock canyon".   A somewhat better query might be:
Match none: Keywords contains words grand canyon
The "contains words grand canyon" will match all images with the words "grand" and "canyon" in the keywords, and "Match none" inverts that and selects all other images.
But this still isn't right, because it will exclude an image having the two keywords, "Grand Island" and "Canyon Drive".  As Rob explained, the Keywords criterion splits all the keywords up into "words", and then treats all the words in all the image's keywords as a single field to be searched.
    Two possible workarounds:
    - If you just want to manually exclude images with the keyword "grand canyon", use this recipe:
In the Keyword List pane on the right, click the arrow to the right of the keyword "grand canyon".  This will filter just those images with exactly "grand canyon".
    Select all the images.
Turn off the filter by clicking None in the Library Filter bar.
Do Edit > Invert Selection to select all the images that don't have exactly "grand canyon".
Add the selected images to the Quick Collection or another collection, if necessary.
    - Use the plugins Space Urchin or Any Filter, as Rob suggested.
In general, LR's text-matching operators are a mess.  Inexplicably, LR doesn't have exact match, the most basic keyword operator, and without exact match, it's difficult to work with a controlled vocabulary of keywords, as this discussion and many others have highlighted.  Users repeatedly get all twisted up trying to understand how to use LR's weird text-match operators.

  • Problems with "Keywords - contains all" in smart collection

I imported multiple pictures from a shoot; each has keywords, and they all have a common keyword phrase, say "my common keyword phrase". I created a smart collection with "Keywords" using "contains all" and parameter "my common keyword phrase". It worked as expected - those images were included in the smart collection.
However, I just imported a new picture that has "my common keyword phrase" in it, and the smart collection is not updated. The smart collection has no other AND or OR triggers.
I can access all the images with this keyword phrase by accessing them via the keyword list in Library - all the images do show up. But what am I likely doing wrong with the smart collection? I am using LR 4.3.1 under Win7 (64-bit). Thanks!

Have you tried deleting the preferences?  See Preference and other file locations in Lightroom 5.  Note that on more recent versions of Mac OS, you should reboot after deleting the preferences, since the operating system can cache them.
Sprinkling this magic fairy dust often fixes weird LR behavior.

  • Keyword filtering problem in Smart Collections

    All,
I’m trying to do create a Smart Collection based on Keywords, unfortunately I can’t seem to get it to work. The criteria is that the collection must contain the keyword phrase “Publish to Flicker & Facebook” but not “Published Image”.
I’ve tried variations of the following:
Match all of the fallowing rules
Keyword doesn’t contain = Published Image
Keyword contains = Publish to Flickr & Facebook
This should give me all the images that I want to Publish to the services but have not been published as of yet. If I do either of these separately they work but not together as a filter. FYI I’m using the Beta 3 version. - CES

That didn't work... even renamed to nonsence words still dosent work

  • Problem when enterring punctuation in Metadata and Smart Collections

It seems that Lightroom isn't applying the same logic to punctuation enterred in metadata and smart collections. For example:
Create a photo with City set to "D'Hanis". Just type those keys, LR will replace the simple straight appostrophe with a nicer angled one. And yes, there is such a town--I have many relatives from there.
Now create a smart collection matching City is "D'Hanis" (again, just type that from the keyboard). In this case the ' character seems to be left as the plain ASCII version. This also means that the smart collection will not match the metadata.
Workaround is to select a relevant image, select the metadata and copy it to the clipboard (Ctrl-C), and then paste that value into the smart collection dialog box so that the smart collection is truly searching for the value in the metadata.

    Hi,
At any case the two headers will not be displayed if you select the both "start of table" and "at page break.". Please check whether there is another widow in the form from where the header is displaying.

  • Smart Collection Filtering Problem

I have set-up identical smart collections in both Bridge and Lightroom 2.4.
In Bridge I have a Keyword called "Collages" and a sub-keyword (under Collages) called "Story Bridge".
In Bridge there are some images where I have only clicked on the sub-keyword "Story Bridge" (and not Callages). There are other images where I select the keyword "Collages" as well as sub-keyword "Story Bridge".
In Bridge I then set-up a smart collection that filters for both "Collages" and "Story Bridge". Both must be in the keywords for the image. This filters correctly ie the images that were only keyworded as "Story Bridge" are not included in the collection.
I then go to Lightroom and synchronise the relevant folders so all keywords in Bridge are brought into Lightroom.
I then set-up exactly the same Smart Collection that must have both "Collages" and "Story Bridge" as their keywords. This time Lightroom also includes all images that were only keyworded with "Story Bridge". Why is this so? I only want the images that have both "Collages" and "Story Bridge" in their keywords but I now also get the images with just "Story Bridge" as their keyword.
I have selected "Match all of the following rules" and added 2 rules for "Collages" and "Story Bridge".
In Bridge I get the correct filtered images but in Lightroom, with the same rules, I get all images with "Collages" or "Story Bridge" as keywords.
I have attached the smart collection filter dialogue boxes for both Bridge and Lightroom.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I suspect that we will see these differences go away in time. Bridge is part of the Creative Suite and Photoshop family and codebase. Lightroom, while part of the Photoshop family, was a whole new approach with an entirely different codebase. Over time we'll see more convergence and various aspects of the applications will operate similarly.
I'm sure it's a monumental task for the teams at Adobe to coordinate all these moving pieces and features. Who knows what LR 3.0 and CS5 will bring to the table!

  • Problems with smart collections

    Technical stuff:
    Adobe Bridge CS5
    Windows XP
    My situation:
I have created a smart collection that comprises over 500 images
the collection is based on image files I have tagged with the keyword "Canada Day"
Within the smart collection, I have additionally tagged specific images with either the keyword RAW or the keyword JPG
there are approximately 275 images that have all three keywords within the Canada Day smart collection
I want to create an AV show based on the images that have all three keywords, so I somehow I need to be able to remove the files that don’t have the three keywords
I thought I could accomplish that by creating a new collection / smart collection using the find function with the following parameters:
"Source"  my top level folder (three years' worth of image)
    Criteria:
    Keyword: Canada Day
    Keyword: JPG
    Keyword: RAW
    ·         Match if: Any criteria are met
I thought that would return me all files that had one or more of those keywords, but instead I got the message “no items to display”.
I tried another approach: removing the unwanted files from the smart collection; however, that functionality does not appear to exist in smart collections. I know I could remove the keyword “Canada Day” from the unwanted files, but I would rather not do that.
Question: how can I create a subset of a smart collection?
Question: why did the find function not work?
I’ve looked for answers online, through Adobe Help, and in my collection of Photoshop books, but have not been able to get any answers.
It would be great if the Forum could help me.
    Thanks in advance,
    Heather

Know nothing about Smart Collections, but question what you are really trying to do.
If you are trying to find the jpeg or raw images, they are not keywords, unless you specifically labeled them as such.  You need to search for "Document Type" and then select jpeg or raw.
For search to work the folders must be indexed.  Otherwise you will get "no items to display".  If you visit the folder and let the spinning arrow in lower left hand corner finish the folder is indexed.  Otherwise check the box in search window "include non-indexed folders".  THis will be slow as it will index every folder.
Also, search works from where you start down.  So make sure you start high enough in the directory tree to include all the folders of interest.

  • Smart Collection date problems

I have some pictures in my catalog that have completely incorrect dates. My step son didn't set the date on his camera and they are in the year 2048. These pictures keep appearing completely out of context and drives me nuts!
For example, they are in the Past Month smart collection. And in the new Past Week smart collection I created. They are not in a This Week or This Month smart collections I just created. I really would like to use "Past Week" as opposed to "This week" but it is useless.
I haven't changed them because I don't know the real date but, alas, I want to keep them. It doesn't look like I can remove the date (which date does LR use anyway?!) in LR. Nor does LR support partial dates. I guess I'm going to have to make something up. Does "Edit Capture Time" now work in LR? I suppose an approximate date would be better than a completely wrong date (but of course I will forget it's not an exact date...)
    Any comments, suggestions?
    Judy

Just use your smart collection to hold all photos with the date 2048. Then edit the date in the exif data on the first photo, then select all the rest and sync the rest of the photos. I used Edit Capture Time and it worked for me. You might be able to change the date by selecting all of them first, and then doing an edit capture time. One piece of advice though, is to give them a unique keyword before messing with the date. That way if you need to re-do anything you will have a way to collect the photos.
To answer your question, I believe LR uses the capture time when you do a date search.

  • Adobe Bridge CC Smart Collections are not displaying all images in the folder

I'm having an issue with Bridge CC were I setup a smart collection to monitor my new photos. The folder contains over 300 photos, but is only displaying 160. The only condition I set is to have a minium file size of 10kb, so it should bring in all files since most are over 4mb. At first I thought it was a problem with the files themselves (permissions or something) but if I open the folder in bridge it easily displays all of the images easily. Any ideas?

I'm having an issue with Bridge CC were I setup a smart collection to monitor my new photos.
You might want to describe this workflow a bit more. Do you create this from an existing folder or are you adding new photo's?
A Smart Collection does not refreshes it self automatically. You either have to use the edit icon top right of the content panel to save again or deselect and select the collection itself to let it refresh the content.

  • Can I create a Smart Collection for images with Paths?

I'd like a folder that automatically collects any image i have in my library in which i've drawn a vector clipping path in Photoshop. Is this possible?

    I couldn't figure that out.
I was hoping the file would contain a metadata call that said "Path: yes" or something like that on which I could set up the smart collection but I couldn't find one either in Lightroom or Finder.
It's possible this piece of metadata doesn't exist, and if so I'll solve my problem with keywords, but I wanted to ask before i assumed.

  • Reading Advanced Metadata in Smart Collections, not working in Bridge CS6

In Bridge CS5 you could make an Smart collection that were looking for: All metadata > contains > "here we add a value from a metadata only visible from the Advanced tab in File info"
But this nolonger works in CS6.
Although I can go to File info and see the metadata value that are visible from Advanced. But the option All metadata, clearly doesn't support the advanced metadata in the file in CS6.
Could this be a bug in CS6?

If any one like to try this yourself and get same or other result, please let me know!
Otherwise this must be a bug to report to Adobe.
I don't have CS5 installed anymore but CS6 is still present while I use Bridge CC for my daily workflow (MacPro MacOSX 10.8.5).
I first copied 4 DNG files from my main folder to a subfolder. Those files I added a name to the IPTC extension persons name and saved.
Checked and this name shows in the IPTC extension persons name field in Metadata panel as well as in Advanced Tab in File Info IPTC Extended Properties / IPTC4xmpExt:PersonInImage(Bag container).
I closed the subfolder and used the smart collection icon to bring up the Find window.
I then selected All metadata and filled in the persons name, had subfolders and non indexed already included and put the source field to the main DNG folder.
The result was almost instant with the 4 files showing.
I then quitted Bridge CC and started Bridge CS6
Since I had not used this for a while and my main folder contained 4500 DNG I set the cache quality icon to embedded only. Selected the same folder and followed the same procedure as in CC.
Naturally it took a bit longer because the files needed to be indexed first, yet after this the result was still the same, the 4 DNG files with the persons name showed in the smart collection.
So on my behalf I can't reproduce your problem and for me it is not a bug also I'm afraid.
