Smart object problems

I think my problem stems from playing with video in PS too much -- with video any convoluted nestings of smart objects ultimately point outwards to a video file, so as I understand it, you can do anything you like in PS and update the whole stack of layers upon effects upon color space changes simply by changing the (only) referenced file. Why not with stills too? Couldn't every arrow, no matter how deeply buried, still point to one PSD? This seems like the missing puzzle piece for me to save the world with PS. To put my question another way: with three ways to do anything in PS, I know of only one way to duplicate smart object and have it remain a faithful copy of the original (command-j and then don't touch it). Are there any other ways?

Why not with stills too? Couldn't every arrow, no matter how deeply buried, still point to one PSD?
Externally linked files are on the feature request list (um, actually on MY list).
When we introduced Smart Objects, many of the beta testers said they didn't really need externally linked files, so we cut that part of the feature and focussed on all the other uses of Smart Objects.
They just require extra logic and UI, and can always fail because the referenced file is missing -- like in other apps that allow external linking/instancing.

  • Smart object problems, from AI to PS = pixelated

    Hello and greetings,
I am new here and looking forward to getting some help, and hopefully giving advice. How is everyone today?
    Ok my problem is:
I am designing a website is Illustrator and finalizing it in photoshop (as this is the file the web developer asked for) I have the main design done, buttons and panels etc -
so I copy the object I want from Ai to PS as a smart object. The web doc in PS is set to 72dpi, which is fine - it looks 'clean' at 100%. However when I do this process on the works PC the result is fine and good eg - looks 'clean' at 100% -
I took my work home to finish on my Mac and when I did the same process it was really pixelated beyond beleif! This is not good! NOT GOOD!! I have compaired one of the buttons from the doc at work to one of the buttons on the same doc dome on my Mac and the difference is terrible.
HELP - Are there some settings I am over looking? I have checked the 'clipboard' settings in Illustrator to recomended to what I could find on the web and nothing has changed? Do I have to close the program for the preferences to work? Please please help
    Many thanks Elles.x x
ps: I am running CS4 at work on a PC and at home CS3 Mac

Thanks Ozzwoman for your advice , it seems to be the thing to do as I have read on here to sort this issue - shall I be doing the same for Illustrator? Or do you know the settings for AI clipboard prefs?
Nice pooch by the way, does he have a name?

ps: will try 'Operation deleting prefs' when I get home, bout an hour or so, I will let you know how is goes!

  • Copy in illustrator, paste in photoshop as smart object problem

Hello. I am posting this here hoping that this message might be seen by someone more experienced who knows the answer. I have already tried to find a solution on my own, but to no avail, and I already lost a whole day just  with this problem.
I'm trying to build an example website, in anticipation for a real one that I want to build later on. I've done the wireframing and design (some of it) in illustrator, and now I want to copy to photoshop what I did in illustrator. I need to copy it as a smart object. The problem is that when I copy to photoshop, even though I choose the same dimensions, the file is not the same size. I have inserted some images to try to explain this more clear.
These are some settings in illustrator.
These are the dimensions in illustrator.
I select the whole content from illustrator, copy it
And after that I go to photoshop. I choose to create a new file
Even though when I created a new file in photoshop I selected the same dimensions that were in illustrator (960 px 1810px), the copied object does not match the canvas when I press enter.
I've searched online for people that had the same problem and I found something somewhat similar, but not helpful. The problem for them was that the anti-alias was not selected. However, as can be seen in the images, in my case the anti-alias is selected. The difference I noticed is that for them the W and H are both directly 100% when the object is pasted into photoshop, but for me this never happens, it is always something different. In the images here it is w 99.99% H 99.94%, and I created another layout before this that had even worse dimensions, something like W 97.68%  H 98%. I tried to fix this by putting manually 100% for each before I press enter, I even selected the "maintain aspect ration" icon (situated between W and H) but after that the image gets distorted.
I should also mention that I created different other smart objects with these files and they have the same problem - I selected the header for example, made it a smart object, and every time they are introduced to photoshop they are not W 100% H 100%  but are 9X % 9X% or something.
I also tried, when creating a new document in photoshop, to put instead of 72pixels/inch  - 300pixels/inch and its the same problem..
I also looked at the illustrator file so that there are no strokes on the edges of the document.
So, please, if there is someone who know how to fix this, to paste it so that I will have the same dimensions (W 100% H 100% automatically) so that the documents will match how it is normal, I would really apreciate the help. If there are any other details and setting one might need, I will look for them and mention them after that. Thank you!

    Use
file >> export > psd instead
Your resizing problem is coming from what is in your clipboard is not 960 x 1810, but larger (960.078 x 1810.048 as seen in your 3rd screenshot), and Photoshop is resizing trying to fit.
To fix this yourself, make a new document, your clipboard size will automaticallly be used if you make a new .psd doucment, then paste, than drag over to your 960 x 1810 .psd document and reposition.

  • Smart Objects Problem : Templates : CS3 : WIN

    Hello,
I am trying to create some reusable templates in Photoshop CS3 using Smart
Objects. Basically I want to layout the page with some place-holder photos
that are smart objects and then when I need to create a page simply load the
template PSD, right-click on the smart object layer in the layers palette
and choose replace contents. This seems to be possible and even works
sometimes. However, a lot of times the size of the smart object images
    change.
    For example I could set a smart object place-holder image to be 4 x 6 -
inches at 300 dpi, replace the image with another image and the size will
then jump to some odd size. I even had it once go to 2 x 10 inches. I
thought the whole point of smart objects was that I could replace the
contents and it would be sized, etc. the same. Well that is one point of
    smart objects.
Is there a bug? Could the fact that I have layer styles and rotation and
resize transformations applied to the smart object be creating the problem?
    Any way around this?
This is Photoshop CS3, Windows Vista, Quad Core Processor, 4GB of RAM, 8 TB
    of hard drive space.

Are you perhaps changing the layer order, grouping or some clipping masks? As usual I'm not working with these features a lot and probably shouldn't advise ;-), but I could imagine that this would affect rasterization and how PS may want to update info that no longer is in the place where it expects... I'd also check the "Temp" directory (Documents and Settings\Rachael\Local Settings\Temp). Perhaps it's simply full and the programs are not able to update the temporary files.

  • Editing as Smart Object Problem

I use LR 2 and Photoshop CS3.  When in LR, I choose edit in Photoshop as Smart Object.  No problem.  I make my changes in PS with no issues, but when I go to save the file, rather than keeping the linkage with Lightroom and simply saving the file back into my stack, It pulls up the Save As diaglog box and asked me where I want to save it.  This doesn't seem to happen when I edit a photo normally in PS - just when I do it as a smart object.
    Anyone else experience this?

    Hi TexKen,
Unfortunately I can't help you here since... I'm experiencing the exact same problem. Same combination of software (running on Windows). Tried experimenting with Smart Objects from Lightroom 2.6 to CS3 and it doesn't take me back to Lightroom.
    Anyone, please help us... ;-)

  • Edit smart object problem - CS4

I have some Illustrator art placed in Photoshop as a smart object. The object contains one main element and then a smaller element off to the side. Now that the object is placed as a smart object I want to edit the content in Illustrator and remove the smaller element that is off to the side. The problem happens that once the element is removed the remaining art placement in the Photoshop document shifts position relative to the new center of the art. Is there any way to change/prevent this?

Giving the objects no fill/stroke has been my work around in the past however this particular element is extremely complex and I was hoping that I could find a quicker and better way. I like the idea of the no fill/stroke bounding box. I will give that a try but I see a potential problem with effects like drop shadows and such. I think that if those effects are expanded and the bounding box set to the area of the expanded raster it might work. I wish that it was "smart" enuf to realize how it was placed/edited and not have to add elements that are for nothing more than to keep it ancored. Is this how it is in CS5?

  • Problems launching Bridge from Photoshop and opening files as smart objects in Photoshop from Lightr

I am running Photoshop CC (up to date as of today) and Lightroom 5.2.  I  am hitting 2 major problems.  In Photoshop if I select File/Browse in Bridge I get the following message
"Could not complete the Browse in Bridge command because Photoshop was unable to find the JavaScript plug-in".
However if I simply launch Bridge as an application it works ok (now I have reset the default application for all the appropriate file extentions to Photoshop CC rather than Photoshop in Bridge preferences) and opens the file in Camera Raw 8.2 in Photoshop when a Raw file is double clicked.
The second problem is associated with opening raw files in Lightroom 5.2, editing and then trying to "photo/edit in/Open as smart object in Photoshop" .  In this case Photoshop opens with a blank screen and nothing happens  Eventually about a minute later this message appears in Lightroom 5.2
"The file could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop CC could not be launched."
Rather strange message as the first thing that happened was that Photoshop CC opened!!
Same thing happens if try "photo/Edit in/Edit in Adobe Photoshop CC" except that having shut down photoshop I see a message from Lightroom 5.2 saying
Lightoom was unable to prepare the selected file at ..... for editing.  It will not be opened.
When I click the OK button on this message low and behold the tif version of the RAW file opens in Photoshop. ready for futher editing with all the Lightroom edits applied.
Can anyone help me in sorting out this problem please
Operating system is Windows 8 64 bit and I am running the 64 bit Adobe applications.

Solved the problems by uninstalling Bridge and Photoshop then going into Creative Cloud App and re-installing both.

  • Ps CS6 Problem: Transform applied to Smart Object fails to transform an attached Smart Filters Mask

    Ps CS6
    OSX 10.6.8
Problem: Transform applied to Smart Object fails to transform an attached Smart Filters Mask.
I mean a Transform, including Free Transform, as found in the Edit menu.  A simple move by the Move Tool is OK.
A workaround until this bug is squashed is to encapsulate the Smart Object + Smart Filters + Filter Mask inside another Smart Object and transform that.
However, that will not be a satisfactory solution in some cases. If a filter has size parameter(s), e.g. Gaussian Blur radius, a scaling or warping/distorting transform applied after the filter will obviously differ from the filter applied after the transform.
In any case, the workaround is inconvenient to subsequent editing and experimenting with filters and masks.

    R_Kelly wrote:
I don't think that's a bug since the implementation seems to be purposely done.
It's been that way since photoshop cs3.
If its been like that since CS3 then I think it's a bug which remains because nobody (or not enough people) has complained before.

  • Smart Objects...changing canvas size problem

When changing the canvas size of a smart object, the layer on the original document will distort visually since it doesn't update the size of the smart object.
Is there a solution to this, or an easy way to quickly update every instance of the smart object on the original doc?
To clarify: I know that you can change the dimensions of the smart object on the original doc and it'll fix it, my question is if there's a way to automatically have that happen and have the original doc smart objects respect your canvas size changes on the smart object doc.
    Reproduce:
    1) Draw a circle
    2) Turn it into a smart object
    3) Go into the smart object, change the canvas size by increasing the height of the canvas. The smart object should now have a circle with blank space above/below it.
    4) Save the smart object
    5) The circle on the original document will now be squished.
    I'm using Photoshop CS5

When you change the canvas size of a document the only layer that will change is a backgroung layer for it does not support transparency so its pixels will be changed.  However a background layer should not distort it may be cropped  and have canvas added in which case the color of the empty canvas can be set in the canvas size dialog.  All other layer including Smart Object layer should not chang at all.  Layer positioning in relationship to the canvas  and the new canvas size is set during the canvas size change.  Layers can be any size and have any aspect ratio. Their sizes can be smaller, the same or larger then the canvas size. Even layer that can fit  within a documents canvas size may be positioned so that all, some or none of the layer is over the documents canvas.
I do not know what you mean when you write the original document chages. A smart object layer has an embedded copy of an object. The original document is not touched. You can open the smart object layer embedded object in  Photoshop by double clicking on the smart object icon in the layers palette smart object layer and change it size. And distort it f you wish. When you use Photoshop save. Photoshop will change the enbedded object in the smart object layer. You can also leave the embedded smaro object as is and change the smart object layer size and distort it using transform on the smart object layer itsself.
I think what you did was to open the smart object in photoshop change its canvas saze then save it. The updated smart object is realy round but you dont see that it is becaue it is being transformec ti fit the original documents canvas. If you do a Canvas size on the codument you will see the original docyment canvas size is not change and thet your now squaching a now changed taller object into a shorter canvas.  With each Smart Obkect layer there is as associated transform.
No I was wrong I just tried that and it looks like the transform was not the problem as yo can see I dir a Ctrl+T so you can see the size of the smart object layer is now biger then the original document and is positioned centered canvas is still 300x300 white area in image

  • Opening a Photoshop smart object file in Illustrator looks horrible (antialiasing problem)

    Hello all,
This problem is killing me and I really wish I had done this logo in Illustrator, but I didn't now I have to suffer. Help!
I am doing a freeland job for a friend so I am not all that and a bag of chips with Illustrator. I am better at Photoshop but I need the vector, so I did my logo in photoshop and created a smart object out of it. I saved a version as a tiff and one as a jpg. My friend is creating his own leaflet in Word and the logo works beautifully there. I am creating a flyer for him in Illustrator and the logo is aliased in Photoshop but when I put it in Illustrator it looks antialiased and bad. He also has a little cheapy yahoo sitebuilder website until I create a website for him and the same logo(jpg) will not open in the yahoo site for him. I work and go to school so I don't have the time to recreated the logo in illustrator. It looks really good the way it is until I put it in Illustrator. Any ideas? please?
Thanks to anyone that answers this question, and kudos for taking time out of your busy day to calm my angst( or add to it)please don't add to it...

    Hello Noel and c,
I created the logo in photoshop
( to make vector in photoshop, I need the scalability, I made the logo a smart object)
I then saved a copy as a jpg(for web) and a tif for print. I am creating a flyer in Illustrator, so I have to bring the logo into illustrator, when I do it looks like an aliasing problem. I had that aliasing problem in photoshop, but I still had text.... so I could antialias the text. In Illustrator the logo is just a tif, or jpg(I have tried both) It is not a text, but an image and it looks antialiased. In some programs the logo looks good, in some programs the logo looks bad.  The only layer I have in the good photoshop file that I saved  as a jpg, and as a tif is one layer that has text and the logo on it- this is a smart object. I have additional work files that have multiple layers, but I do not want multiple layers on my final print, web file. When I open up my laptop, I will save a screenshot.
    Thanks so much

  • Problem when extracting Smart Objects

I am having a problem when extracting Smart Objects.
I work for a small pre-press company. We are working on several computers using one Job Server. Some of these computers have different versions of OS.
For one of our clients the company uses Smart Objects as a precaution for moire issues. The child file stays a certain size, while the parent file is sized down for print. Our client has started to request the larger Child size image for their use. For the volume of images requested, I have made an action out of Photoshop to open the smart object and save out a flat tif of the larger child file image. Here is the problem...
At times the smart objects child file does not retain the name of the smart object layer as its being extracted. What could be causing the lost connection between the parent file name to the child file name, and is there a way to prevent it in the future?
    Thanks for your help:)
    DVan

    Hello,
I have noticed that. The true problem is that the child files name starts out as the parent layer name, but then somewhere down the line it turns wonkie, starting to be named things like 12.psd etc. Please see attached. Your can't re-save the name of the child file either because all that does is save out a named temp file that does not get linked back to the parent file....so what is making the name change?

  • Smart objects from Illustrator and Indesign dimensions problem

I have been trying to find an answer to this problem for 6 months now and surprised no one else has tried to find any answers.
When we import something from illustrator or indesign as a smart object, for some reason the objects width and height will not keep their  dimensions in proportion.
When the asset is first imported as a smart object it says the width and height are exactly 100%. However after that if you try to change the dimensions they will be out of proportion, usually the width will be 100% but the height will be out by about 1% to begin with. When you scale up, the percentages fall further and further apart. See image attached.
This has become a real problem for our workflow as the creative director insists we must  correct every layer which has this issue by typing in the sizes manually, but then this doesnt always fix the problem either depending on which version of photoshop you are using.
Why does this happen, and how can we fix it for good?
    Thanks, Chris.

I do not have the answer for I don't have illustrator and indesign.  I do have Photoshop and have notice that it try to match resolutions and maintain sizes but it may also scale placed object etc. There are some some Photoshop preferences setting that can effect some operations. Photoshop also has support for non square pixels.
Make some test if illustrator and indesign have setting for pixel aspect ratio and DPI resolution. Make sure all documents have the same pixel aspect ratio and same DPI resolution and that the vector object to be imported are not larger then the Photoshop document their being imported to.
Thanks for the suggestions, but none of these would be the answer. Illustrator is Vector so it does not use DPI / Pixel aspect ratios etc.

  • Problem with pasting a smart object in Photoshop

I create artworks using both Illustrator and Photoshop by pasting different elements as smart objects in Photoshop on different layers  but I often have a problem.
To make the pasted content  positioned exactly on the same place as in Illustrator, I create a box with no fill and stroke encompassing the whole artwork (with the thick pink frame on the image below) and paste different elements along with the encompassing box on different layers in Photoshop.
The problem is that often during the creation of the artwork it may require using a clipping path containing objects bigger than the encompassing box. Then when pasting in Photoshop the size of the bounding box containing the invisible parts of the objects is factored in instead of the visible parts only.
The image bolow is a simplified example. On the left side  is the selection in Illustrator but when pasted in Photoshop although it keeps the same visibility as on the left size, the encompassing frame is the bounding box shown on the right side and this messes up the position of the placed objects. I know the problem can be avoided if I know in advance how big the eventual artwork including the invisible objects would be and create an encompassing box big enough but often this is not the case. What do yo think would be the easiest way to fix this problem once it occurs?

Just so you are aware, photoshop has a bug when sensing illustrator files.
If your starting with a new document and letting photoshop sense the size from the clipboard, set the physical size to inches or centimeters before changing the ppi from 72 to 300. By default, photoshop is set to pixel dimentions and ppi is disabled even though you can type in a new value, it does not alter the size any.

  • Smart object masks problem

Let's see if I can explain the problem I'm having...
    1. I create a blank 12x12 320 dpi image.
    2. I choose place from the file menu and choose an image to place on the 12x12 document as a smart object
    3. I make a selection on the smart object (rectangle for example)
    4. Press the mask button under the layers on the layers palette to apply the rectangular mask for the smart object.
    5. Now select the smart object and try and re-size it with the layer handles.
The mask for the smart object gets all messed up. It's like it puts the mask at the bottom right of the smart object now. I can un-link the mask and object and move it back, but it seems it is behaving incorrectly.
    Can anyone verify this?
    Matt

The problem is your mask is not linked to the smart object, and therefore doesn't transform with it. The workaround in CS3 was to drop the smart object in a group and apply the mask to the group instead. I'm assuming by your post this is still necessary in CS4. You might try clicking between the mask and the smart object (in the layers panel) first and see if a link (chain) icon appears...
