Smart playlists not working in iTunes 10.5 and iPhone 4s

None of my smart playlists on my 4s match my iTunes playlists

Okay, this worked for me but it might be a temporary fix, I'm not sure.
Right click or control click on the playlist in iTunes you want on your iPhone that isn't showing up. Duplicate the playlist, delete the old one. Sync and the playlist will be there on your phone.

  • Why is photostream not working together with my macbook and iphone?

Photostream is not working togther with my macbook and iphone. How can I sync it?

    Has it ever worked?
If you recently turned on photo stream on the mac and iphone, then (on the iphone) only new photos are included in photo stream, old ones are not.
But syncing to your mac (if the photos originate from the iphone) is critical.  That's how you store photos (they can easily disappear on the iphone due to many "issues" that can occur, and relying on an icloud backup is not safe - to many users have lost some/all their photos when doing a restore.
So be sure to begin by doing a sync to the mac using itunes/iphoto with a USB cable.

  • Some smart playlists not working correctly

I have a smart playlist, "100 Most Played" that contains, as you might infer, the 100 most played songs (according to play count). On the iPhone, this seems to come out as 100 random songs because it does not correspond to the playlist as it appears in iTunes.
    iPhone 8GB

agreed. i'm having the same problem, and am also surprised by it.
    DOESN'T WORK:
"Top 25" - should be easy. all the songs that the iPhone needs for this smart playlist are, yes, synced to the iPhone. but it picks a set of songs that have nothing in common as far as i can see (they have different ratings and add dates and so on).
    WORK CORRECTLY:
"80s/Good" - an alphabetical list of songs with the genre "80s". this works and appears in the right order.
"New" - shows new additions to iTunes, sorted by date added. works correctly.
    WEIRDEST:
"Forgotten/Best" - is a playlist for showing 5-star songs not played recently. has always worked on iTunes. oddly, on the iPhone, the song list is actually the song list for the "Top 25" ?!?!!? i mean, it -is- the Top 25 playlist, but with the wrong name somehow. it's very confusing.
waiting for a software update =)

  • ITunes11 smart playlists not working

I can't get a smart playlist to work on the new iTunes11.
I created one with the search criteria to show all files added after 11/20/2012. Although there are 231 files that fit that criteria, none are listed in the smart playlist.
So I created a smart playlist with the search criteria to show all files with the word "vinyl" in comments. [I record old vinyl albums onto my computer, so I add the "vinyl" comment so that I can isolate them.] This playlist resulted in zero items even though my old smart playlist -the one that was constructed in iTunes10 but transferred into iTunes11- does work. However, my iTunes10 vinyl smart playlist does not list any "vinyl" files added after upgrading to iTunes11.
So I created a smart playlist with the search criteria to show all files where the artist included the word "Smith". Considering that I have many Chris Smithers tracks and many tracks from the Smiths, I would expect those files to appear. And yet this smart playlist also resulted in zero items.
I am having zero luck using smart playlists with iTunes11.
Smart playlists are nothing new to me. I have successfully created dozens of them over the years. Has something changed that I am overlooking?

I seem to have the same problem.
If this is confirmed (or if this is just a plain bug, which would be no better) than this is a disaster.
I use smart playlist for sorting albums. For example:
    - normal playlist for "must have"
    - normal playlist for "nice to have"
    - normal playlist for "can live without"
-> and a smart playlist with "none of the above" (ie "not sorted")
Then I just have to move albums from that smart playlist to any of the above and it is now sorted.
Well today with iTunes 11, whatever I do with the album, it stays there.
    Pointless Apple, fix that bug!!!

  • Smart Playlists Not Working With Podcasts

I have a smart playlist set up in iTunes that has the following criteria:
    Media Kind is Podcast
    Play Count is 0
This groups all of my new podcasts into one playlist that I can just play straight through. When I upgraded to iTunes 9 and updated my iPhone to OS 3.1, my playlists that contain podcasts are no longer transferred to my iPhone. Any ideas?

Okay, here's an irritating workaround: select all the podcasts (I selected just the ones in my "unplayed podcast" smart playlist), Get Info, and change "Media Type" to "Music" (or anything but "Podcast"). Sync with the iPod. On my phone, the podcast episodes now appear in their playlists, but they no longer appear in the "Podcast" section of the phone. I guess they have to be in one-or-the-other. Annoying. I don't use the "Podcast" section much anyway. I hope they fix this stupid change in the software; I'll hate having to change the media type every time I get new podcasts.
Oh, my smart playlists used to find the podcasts by finding "media type = podcast" but I changed that to "genre = podcast" which seems to work. This is just a work-around though, and I think the problem should remain "unsolved" until they fix it.

  • ITunes 11.1.2 and iOS 7.0.3 Smart Playlists not working

I am unable to get a smart playlist of mine to update on my iPhone 4s. The smart playlist is updated on my iMac and the items in it are copied across to my 4s but the playlist on my 4s is not getting updated. This just started 2 days ago. When I sync the same smart playlist to an old iPod Touch 3g running iOS 4.3.3 it is copied across fine and all works. The items in the playlist are all podcasts and up to a couple of days ago were copying across fine (and the older items are still there in the playlist on my 4s).

    Hello gortdromagh,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when syncing your playlist to your iPhone.  For an issue like this, I recommend resyncing the music to your iPhone.
If you are syncing automatically, resync content to the iPhone by unchecking "Sync Music" and click "Apply,"  then check "Sync Music" and click "Apply" again.
You can find the syncing steps in the following article:

  • Recently played Smart Playlist not working

I read here that this was a problem back in 2005, but I'm only encountering it now with the latest iTunes upgrade. I noticed today that my Recently Played smart playlist did not update for all the songs I played today. It shows only 1 song played today, which I think I played through the computer/iTunes. All of the songs played on my ipod today are not being recognized as "recently played". This is affecting the majority of my other smart playlists because they mostly work on a "least recently played" or "least often played" idea.
Is this happening to anyone else and does anyone have a fix?
    Thanks -

  • Smart Playlists not working on iPhone after iOS5 update..

Okay, so I normally have a custom made smart playlist which I name "Recently Modified" so I can see the list of songs which I have recently updated in quality or changed the artwork etc., but since updating to iOS5, this playlist still works fine on iTunes but appears blank on my iPhone 4 while all other playlists work fine. Any reason why this might be?

Right, well my settings for it look like this:
(Date Modified > is in the last > 2 > days)
It's not as if they are very complicated conditions, so I can't understand what would be wrong. Normally if a playlist had no songs in it, it wouldn't sync right? But this is what the playlist looks like on my iPhone, even though it does contain songs:

  • Smart Playlists not updating after iTunes upgrade

Since updating to iTunes 7.5.0.20, my iPod Photo no longer updates my Smart Playlists automatically
    Any reasons, fixes, suggestions?

Hi, I'm having a similar problem. I recently switch back from MediaCenter (on windows to iTunes). I did a fresh install of iTunes, reformatted my iPod and began using it.
I have smart playlists based on playcount. I notice that when I sync my iPod, the play counts do not change most of the time in my iTunes library. I just listened to a few songs and songs I listened to last night at 11:00pm were listed however, songs I listened to yesterday morning were not.
I'm gradually remembering why I moved off iTunes to begin with. MediaCenter may have the occasional crash but at least they can manage this simple task.

  • Smart Playlists not working on 80gig classic

Anybody have smart playlist problems. i have a complicated smart playlist that includes other smart playlist and before in my 4th generation ipod when a song finished on one playlist it will go away, now they just stay there as if i didn't play it. I notice they will update when i sync but not otherwise. I knew they had problems with this a few generations back but I thought it was fixed.

On the iPod smart playlists do not update while you are in them like they do in iTunes. This fooled me before.
So for example, say you are playing a playlist and the song finishes and the next starts. While it is playing if you go to the main menu to check the playlist you will still find the song you just played (if the SPL should have removed it) which makes you think it doesn't update.
If that is what you are doing, instead after the song plays and you still see it in your playlist, exit the playlist by starting up another playlist instead. Then check again and see if the song that should have been removed it still in that SPL.

  • Smart Playlists not working properly

Have a 5G iPod classic 30gb. I've created some smart playlists, but they're not synching properly. When I go to the playlist and set it to shuffle, each song is coming up as "1 of 1", as if it is a separate playlist... Any suggestions???

To an extent thank goodness, I thought I was going mad.
I too have this issue with iPhone & Itunes 9.
All my smart playlists on my iphone are in random order, but the one which is bothering me the most is my 25 most played, which contains stuff I don't think I have ever played.
Looking at smart playlist on my itunes or on expanded tree for iphone when connected to itunes has the correct listing but random on my iphone.
Let hope they fix this soon.

  • Smart playlist not working

My smart playlists aren't doing jack squat for updating. The live-update checkbox is checked. I tried unchecking it, then going back and checking it again. No luck. I have lots of new songs on my computer that simply are not showing up. And the music isn't random at all. It's not changing. Very frustrating.
I have a smart playlist limiting size (so it fits on my ipod), checked random, and live-updating. Nothing else. But it won't update.
I'd just recreate it every time I want to sync (which I did once hoping to fix the problem), but it's used in a bunch of other playlists too, so that's a huge pain to recreate all those too.
Anyone know how to troubleshoot this? I am lost, and a bit mad at the software (trying hard not to dislike apple right now).

    HappyPants wrote:
Why can't my criteria simply be limit size to 14800MB ...
So I guess checking random just selects random songs, it's not actually a criteria. So really that Should be a criteria....Random. Just that.
I Just want a certain number/size of random songs.
You have to have at least one criteria, which can be something as simple as "Bitrate Is Greater Than 1 kbps" which all your music would meet, then set it to select 14800MB selected at random. iTunes will grab 14800MB worth of songs, selected at random, but the contents won't change unless you include criteria that forces songs out of the playlist to be replaced. Otherwise, the playlist contents will never change. Make sense?
    HappyPants wrote:
In my case I really don't want to use the criteria as you suggest, "last played is not in the last 'x' days" because sometimes I like to hear the same songs over and over again ... I just can't fit all my music on my ipod and wanted the nano for it's size. So the best solution for me is to just have it randomize my songs a bit every time I sync.
Then how is iTunes supposed to differentiate between the songs you like to hear over and over and other songs that it needs to select "at random"?
    HappyPants wrote:
After some thought, I chose to do: last skipped is not in the last 1 day.
That should change quite frequently before putting a song back into the playlist, and it should keep the songs that I like listening to over and over.
    Now you're thinking
I still would like there to just be some way of just limiting the size and having it random though.
You can do this (see my first suggestion in this post). However, what you're asking is for iTunes to somehow know what songs you want to keep on your iPod vs. the songs it is supposed to pick at random.
I would recommend you make a regular playlist (not smart) that holds the songs that you always want on your iPod, then a smart playlist that randomly selects from the rest of your music. In the smart playlist, include the criteria "playlist is not (other playlist name)" so that you don't double up on the same songs.
If you want to manage an iPod that is smaller than your library, I would recommend you spend some time reading an excellent paper on how to do this:

  • Smart Playlists not working correctly

Is anyone else able to reproduce this fault?
I have added a smart playlist simply called music... with the options set as follows:
Match (checked) ANY of the following rules...
    Genre is not Podcast
    Genre is not Lecture
    Live Updating is also checked...
However, podcasts and my audio lectures are both appearing in this playlist... any ideas?

Match (checked) ANY of the following rules...
    Genre is not Podcast
    Genre is not Lecture
    Live Updating is also checked...
This will match all songs. Because a song can be a podcast and still match the "Genre is not Lecture" rule.
Change it to "Match ALL" of those rules instead, and you'll get the results you want.

  • Smart playlists not working?

    Hi all,
OK Im trying to setup a smart playlist for my Nano. Set the parametres I want ie. only those artists that contain Stevie Ray Vaughan and Rory Gallagher, not anything set with the genre of Music Video and limit to 8GB only.
See this image for the results in the background...
    http://www.mindofdesign.com/odds/smart.jpg
Its version 7.6.2 by the way.
    Anyone else having this trouble?

I think the problem is that you what you have match any checked and one of the options is Genre is NOT music videos. Therefore, the Smart playlist will select anything in your library that isn't a music video.
In other words, you can't do Stevie Ray Vaughn AND Rory Gallagher BUT NOT music videos all in one go.
You need to set up a playlist that has the criteria Artist is Stevie Ray Vaughn, Artist is Rory Gallagher, Match Any. Then, set up a second playlist with the criteria match all, Playlist is <first playlist>, Genre is not music video.
