SMB crashes Finder

I have an Inoi NAS hard drive connected to my network using SAMBA. When I try to connect on my MacBook or another MacBook Pro, opening certain folders causes the Finder to crash. Same folder does it on both machines. However, on another Windows laptop, this volume connects flawlessly. I'm pretty sure the problem lays somewhere within OS X's implementation of SMB, but I have no idea what to do to remedy the problem.

No, that doesn't change anything. I can access the drive from Parallels (XP) running on the MacBook Pro, but no go from within the Finder.

  • Showing preview column in icon mode crashes finder

Issue: Finder crashes and my icons on my desktop disappear then reappear when attempting to view a file of any type in icon mode with "show preview column" selected in "Show View Options".
I don't recall any recent updates or any changes to my G5. I can open a file in its application program (i.e. a .jpg opens in Photoshop) if I double click it quickly enough before Finder crashes. The only way I can get icon view not to crash Finder is by unchecking the "show preview column" box in "Show view options". I like the preview option and would very much like to get it back.
Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Sorry, no idea how I missed your reply back on the 29th!
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

  • PSD documents crash Finder!!

Just wanted to let everyone know to be careful when using CoverFlow in folders containing PSD documents. Some of my PSD's are crashing Preview (and in turn QuickView, CoverFlow, and Finder!) ... There isn't anything special about the PSD's that do this, some were created on my old WinXP machine and others on this iMac. I've uploaded one to my server in case anyone wants to take a look (especially someone at Apple!!) - be advised that using QuickView to view this file will crash Finder, although if you open the file in Photoshop you'll see that it's just a simple, single-layer document. Nothing fancy at all.
Anyway, you can download the file here: http://www.mavisxp.com/public/Finder_Crasher.zip
Once more, using QuickView to view this file will crash Finder, as will using CoverFlow on the folder containing this file. On my iMac the crash and subsequent re-launch of Finder is very quick, but you may not be so lucky. Anyway, I hope this problem is solved soon, so that I can use CoverFlow without having to worry about crashing Finder!

I'm definitely using maximize compatibility. I've tried all kinds of things to try and nail down what the mystery factor is. Most of my psds do open fine. I've tried changing the colour profile, changing whether the file has a bg layer, turning preview on and off. thanks for trying though, and I'm all ears for any other suggestions. It's pretty annoying. I'm wondering if it's something to do with embedded metadata--as far as I can tell, they're all files that were generated out of Lightroom.

  • .dmg file crashes Finder

I have a .dmg file that crashes Finder after mounting. The mounted image icon appears on the desktop, but not in the Finder window sidebar. When I try and open Finder crashes and starts up again.
I have tried verifying and repairing the file in Disk Utility and everything checks out fine.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Just to add a bit to Niel's coolest solution for this problem I have seen yet:
    1. You will want to relaunch Finder to create a new Desktop folder: just hold down the option key and click on the Finder icon in the Dock and select relaunch
    2. You can then move any good files you had out of the OldDesktop folder back into the newly created Desktop folder
    3. You can then toss the OldDesktop folder with the offending files into the trash
And Niel: bravo! Finally a decent solution the Finder-Desktop problem! This is GREAT!

  • MTU 1530 crashes finder

MTU > 1530 crashes finder. Pretty much says it. MTU of 1531 will crash AFP connection attemps and kill the finder.
NICs support jumbo frames. Trying to share between two PowerMac G4's. Only MTU that works is 1530 and less. 1531 and over will crash the computer.
Need to get jumbo frames running.
When I go to try to resurect the finder I get a -600 error.

^ I don't really understand what that means?
    Reader Reports (most recent first)
Apple PCI-X Gigabit cards: (follow-up from reader that reported on hawking cards on 8/29)
    (added 9/1/2006)
"Hello again... Recently I found that the Hawking cards worked and are available via newegg, and I mentioned trying out the Apple "PCI-X Gigabit Ethernet Card" in two old PowerMac G4s to try to boost the file transfer performance (MB/S) using 9000 MTU on the Apple cards vs 1500 MTU on the hawking ones. The cards came, have nice LEDs (emerald green and sapphire blue), and are very easy to install compared to other cards. I'm testing using two powermac g4s (sawtooth's) one with the stock 400 MHz proc, other with a 1.8 GHz giga upgrade, both with 512 MB PC-100 ram, the test volumes are both raid-0 on both machines over two hdd. The Apple NICs are 64-bit.
The Apple "PCI-X Gigabit Ethernet Card" is based on the BROADCOM BCM5703CKHB chipset. The cards show they are able to handle jumbo frames in the ethernet tab in the network pref. pane. I set both cards to 9000 MTU which is usually greyed out if you have a non-jumbo card. Cards are connected over a DGS-1024D switch with 9.6k frames.
I tried opening a AFP to my PVR machine (the other PM G4), the window popped up to enter the IP (I entered the IP), then I authenticated (that worked fine), then the next screen after that is the one where you choose your volume. I chose the volume and pressed OK and the AFP froze.
I found that using a MTU > 1530 crashes the finder, forcing a hard restart. I tested MTU at 1531-1540 and at every step the finder is "(not responding)" after volume selection over AFP. Very odd. I called Apple enterprise support and they said the card has no free support (even though I just bought two of them less than 2 days ago) and it would cost $199 to get started on a support case to work on an explanation why 9000 MTU causes the crashes. I returned the cards.
But before I return the cards I'll mention the performance at 1530 MTU. The xfers from one G4-A raid-0 volume to G4-B raid-0 volume produce a STR of about 25 MB/S. The Apple NICs perform very slightly better than the hawking units. The STR somestimes hit 26-28 MB/S. I used a stopwatch and the file size to get the MB/S.
The performance is exactly the same as the Hawking cards, but at 4 times the price. Not a very good bargain huh? The Apple web site says that the PCI-X Gigabit Ethernet Card requires a 800 MHz G4. Funny, as the card works semi-fine in a 400 MHz G4, albeit only at 1530 MTU. Perhaps a 800 MHz G4 is needed for 9000 MTU? Apple had no ready explanation why this is so, and mentioned it would cost $200 to start a ticket. That's how much both cards cost.
I contacted Corky at Small-Tree and he said the 90mt is my best bet for using jumbo frames and copper gig-e on a powermac g4. The 90mt is $150 a pop. He said that no one has ever tried one in a sawtooth as far as he could remember. Once my apple RMA posts to my paypal I'll drop $300 for 2 90mt's and try it out. If they can do 9000 MTU as he claims over AFP I'll keep em only if they get me over 25 MB/S.

  • Drobopro ethernet crashes finder

drobopro ethernet crashes finder . finder freezes up and i have to restart .. drobopro doesnt stay online with ethernet for long

    Hi again,
    1) I've done this 2 or maybe three times
    2) I don't want to think about this "possibility"
    3) I think my problem is due to one of two things: either there is a bug in the system, or there is a problem with my Ethernet card.
First thing in the morning I'll go to an authorized Apple store!
If you're still here, do you think it's possible to damage the Ethernet card alone? Is the Ethernet card a hardware thing one can replace? If you're not here, I'll hopefully get my answers in the morning (and a new functional system/computer). Thanks a lot for your advices!

  • Server's network drive crashes Finder.

    Hi all,
Im having a problem where intermittently, trying to open a folder on a home server's networked (AFP) drive is crashing Finder and forcing me to do a hard reboot.  force quitting finder DOES NOT fix it.  I click on the server on the lefthand side in finder, and then on a folder ON the server, and it hangs and gives me the pinwheel.
Here is the Finder crash log- I hope someone can decipher it for me.

  • Quicktime fails to open, crashes finder / safari

    Hi all
I am wondering if any geniuses can help me.
I recently uninstalled quicktime (drag to trash and empty) to upgrade to the new version. It installed fine but won't work at all.
If I click on any video type (avi. mov. mpg etc) it crashes. Similarly if I select a file in finder it crashes finder while generating the preview. Safari will also crash if a movie is embedded on a page (quicktime trailers for example)
I've long lost my remote control so I can't verify if front-row works but I'd presume thats not working either.
I'm confident enough to dig around my computer if files need removing, however I'm not sure what needs deleting or where the conflict might be.
This is the third time to uninstall and reinstall because of the problem but that doesn't appear to change anything. Other user accounts are also affected in the same way by this.
    Any advice is welcomed.

You should have never trashed Quicktime to do an upgrade. Quicktime is part of the OS. Meaning when you trashed Quicktime the OS became unstable. At this point anything bad can happen, as you can see.
You'll need to do an archive and install from your OS disc. This will get you up and running again... Doesn't take long. And you shouldn't lose anything (hopefully).
If that doesn't work you'll have to do a clean install... Try to copy what data and files you can to another hard before doing this. A clean install you lose everything.

  • Crashing finder loop

I was working on something yesterday when all of the sudden the finder closed and opened, then closed and opened again, and again, and again until It was annoying and became apparent that it was a loop...
first I restarted but it was the same all over...
I then tried to login as another user and everything was just fine...
so I was puzzle, I tried some stuff like open firm restart and user mode but couldnt do anything... but reset to defaults but everything kept the same and the finder kept crashing...
so I tried google (some apps actually worked when this was happening) and I got some lead on macosXhints.com but it didnt help me out, but it got me thinking that probably was a file in the desktop that was causing the loop... (I had a desktop full of stuff), and Path Finder was mentioned on this website I had googled...
so I downloaded a Path Finder demo from cocoatech.com
and I managed to open it because I had to be faster than the crashing finder, when I finally opened it, made a new folder on my HD and moved there whatever files I had on the desktop, now the destop was empty...
I did not even needed to reboot, the crashing finder loop was over...
so I dont know wich file originated this but it was finally done...
it took me more than 3 hour to figure it out, and if you have this symptom on your mac, maybe my little horror story can help you out...
    keep that smile...

Happened to me -- for the second time in two months. I am getting ready to fix it now, doing what one of the AppleCare super guru's had me do (two techs later and after two hours of futzing and working within the shell as they spoke to me over the loudspeaker.)
I have no idea what caused the first finder loop problem. I was emptying trash, and it told me I couldn't do it because something was in use (which wasn't) and did the finder flash thing. Everything on the desktop disappeard. The dock still was visible, and I could still launch apps. I could see the desktop and hard drives from my G4 -- I just couldn't get to them.
The final solution to the fix was: set up a 'test' administrator account, using test as the admin and test as the password. Made sure everything of importance was backed up to other machine. Then I set up a new administrator and had to set permissions on all the folders on my hard drive. Fonts and all. Very tedious. Had to set preferences on all my software, but at least I didn't have to reinstall everything.
So, today my boss sends me a file that he says is really funny .... a .asf file from his windoze box ... and when I drag it over to the desktop my finder freaks again. Found out that a coworker in OSX (not Tiger) got the same file and said she couldn't open it.
The first time I got the finder loop problems was two days after getting my machine back from the Apple Store after a total gutting. Machine is barely six months old and after four months they replaced: Processors, logic board, hard drive, power supply. Yep. Gutted. And for all of their complicated testing software, it kept coming up as okay -- yet it would crash on them.
An $1880 machine after educational discount ran a total of nearly $1,600 in warrantied repairs.
I've really been very disappointed with this G5 -- I'm starting to think that the whole area of personal computing has taken a backseat to the iPod (of which I do have one). I suppose they know who butters their bread, but at the expense of us power users who have been loyal followers of Apple -- even in the lean times.
I don't know if the finder/looping/crashing is a problem in the software or hardware, but all I know is I am getting ready to set up yet another admin account. There's got to be a better way ...

  • Bit torrent downloads crash finder

Every time I leave a bit torrent download/upload running it crashes Finder. This happened when I was running Mac OS X 10.5, as well as after I upgraded to 10.6. This occurs with no matter what bit torrent application I use to handle the torrents. I've deleted the programs and all associated files, did a clean install of the application and get the same result. It used to happen when I had more than one torrent going at a time, but now it's occurring even with just one. My iMac is just over a year old, none of my resources are tapped (processor, memory, disk activity) when this happens, it just freezes. I just can't figure out why this is happening. Thanks.

You say it crashes Finder then you say it freezes, which is it?
Do you have a Finder window open to look at the directory that is
    involved in the download?
If so, try doing it without having a Finder window open for that
directory and see if it makes a difference.
There have been a number of topics about Finder issues involving
downloading of audio/visual files - something to do with Quicklook
attempting to use a partially downloaded file.

  • Opening specific folder on NAS crashes finder

A subfolder of my iTunes Music Folder, which lives on my NAS, frequently "goes bad", after which point opening that folder always causes Finder to crash in both Leopard and Tiger.
The same folder - let's call it "MusicA" - has been going bad occasionally for months now, and the only way I know to fix it is to log in to the NAS with one of my Linux boxes, create a new folder "MusicB", move the contents of MusicA into MusicB, rename or delete MusicA, and then rename MusicB to MusicA (so that iTunes can continue to find the files it knows live in MusicA).
I can't use Disk Utility to check permissions on the NAS, since it's technically a file server, not a drive. I don't know how to cd into the NAS using the terminal on my Mac, since $ cd /Volumes/WORKGROUP;DRIVENAME/folder just causes terminal to complain:
-bash: cd: /Volumes/WORKGROUP: No such file or directory
-bash: DRIVENAME/folder: No such file or directory
I've also tried to cd to a folder on the NAS using its IP address, in a way similar to how I mount the drive in the command line in Linux, but I haven't gotten this to work correctly, either. Although I have tinkered with Linux for years, I'm no uberhacker.
I have a massive music collection, which I have ripped and organized over the years using Windows, various flavors of Linux, and more recently, Mac OS X. I currently have a Mini running OS X Tiger, and a Mac Book running Leopard. I primarily listen to and organize music with iTunes on the Mac Mini.
The problem typically develops when I move a folder or folders from elsewhere on the NAS into MusicA. It doesn't happen every time by any means, but it seems to happen once every week or two, and it's a huge hassle to stop what I'm doing and go through the rigmarole I described above, just so I can continue organizing files in MusicA with finder, and adding files from MusicA to my library in iTunes.
I'm wondering if it's an text encoding problem with a folder or file name. I do have a lot of foreign music, but the foreign characters in the filenames and tags don't specifically seem to cause problems. And when I move the files to a new folder, the problem doesn't seem to follow them there. Furthermore, even if I rename MusicA with Linux after that folder has become problematic, opening the renamed folder with either of my Macs still causes finder to crash. Also, other folders on the NAS and on the system I'm using to access it remain unaffected - after finder crashes and restarts, I can navigate anywhere else on the NAS or the local system with no problems.
So it seems to be more of a problem with the parent folder, MusicA, even though the problem arises as a result of moving other files or folders into it.
I have searched this discussion forum, as well as the internet at large, quite extensively to try to find a fix for this problem, and while I've found many different accounts of finder crashing for one reason or another, I can't find anything describing symptoms exactly like the ones that continue to plague me. Stuffit seems to cause finder crashes for a lot of people, but it's not installed on my Mac Mini.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I should try next to get to the root of the problem?

Hi vodsonic, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Off hand it sounds more like HDD corruption, but a couple of other things it might be...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Can get corrupted by long filenames or maybe foreign characters, try deleting it and reboot.
In finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1, and reboot.
Or we could try deleting those silly hidden DS_Store files first...

To configure a Mac OS X user account so that .DS_Store files are not created when interacting with a remote file server using the Finder, follow the steps below.
Note: This will affect the user's interactions with SMB/CIFS, AFP, NFS, and WebDAV servers.
    1 Open the Terminal.
    2 Type:
    defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
    3 Press Return.
    4 Restart the computer.
If you want to prevent .DS_Store file creation for other users on the same computer, log in to each user account and perform the steps above—or distribute a copy of your newly modified com.apple.desktopservices.plist file to the ~/Library/Preferences folder of other target users.
These steps do not prevent the Finder from creating .DS_Store files on the local volume. These steps do not prevent previously existing .DS_Store files from being copied to the remote file server.

  • Some websites appear to crash Finder

I have an iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, bought new in Feb 2009, now running OS 10.6.8. For the last 3-4 months I have had a problem with the Finder crashing that I never had before. It seems to happen when using the internet to visit certain websites, and particularly one that I use for work to download and upload files, mainly Word files but aso some pdfs. Twitter also sometimes causes the problem, and this morning it was the Orange website that crashed both Firefox and the Finder. I am using Firefox 13.0.1. It also occasionally happens in Safari (5.1.7) though, so it's not just a Firefox problem.
I also have problems uploading to this work site - the files get nearly to the end and then just hang (no other user of this site has a similar problem). I have no problems, however, uploading photos to sites like Photobucket, and I have had a long phone call with BT who have tested the broadband connection and say it is working well both for downloads and uploads.
I am running VirusBarrier X6 as well.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions as to what might be causing this problem, as I know it is not good for the computer to shut it down manually as often as I am now having to do. Apart from this issue, the iMac works fine.
    Thanks in anticipation, Alison

Just want you to know that I've been having a similar problem. Athough not with those sites, for me it primarily seems to be related to Netflix. I also have Intego installed btw, and our configurations are similar as well, I have an iMac dual processor (slower older chip though). Here is my HW overview:

  • Dock Downloads Folder Drag & Drop Crashes Finder

When attempting to Drag & Drop files from the Downloads folder in the Dock to a different folder, whether that folder be on the Desktop, or open in a Finder window, Finder crashes and relaunches. Sometimes the file gets placed, sometimes it remains in the Dock. I have a similar problem with Mountain Lion on my 13" MBP, although Finder does not crash, it simply won't allow files to be dragged from the Dock to a folder icon on the Desktop.
This problem has been persistent through several updates, and has been present since upgrading to Lion, and is a problem on more than one computer. This does not happen with every file, but happens often enough to be frustrating. It also happens consistently when moving more than 2 files from the Downloads folder in the Dock to either the Desktop, or a folder. I am also unable to Drag & Drop a file from the Downloads (or Documents folder for that matter...) to any folder icon on the desktop.
I attempted this morning to file a bug report with Apple, but the Bug Reporting site had an error, and the Home Button on the Error page does nothing (hooray for web design!).

Step one is to log into a newly created admin user account and see if the problem persists.
As for the BR issue, https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa/wa/signIn loads w/o issues.
