Smooth Lines in PS

In Illustrator you draw a line and Illustrator will automatically smooth out the line so it looks clean and smooth.
My question: Is there an equivalent command in Photoshop?
Note: I am using CS6

Your question is a bit on the terse side, but I think what you're wanting is vector-based graphics, which you achieve in Photoshop via paths and vector masks shape layers.
Are you having specific trouble with the aliasing?  That might require setting the RGB blending in the Color options to gamma 1.0.
You're wanting this kind of result?

  • Smooth line drawing in as3

    I am looking for a smoothe line drawing effect as in the pencil tool in Flash. I need to implement the same using as3. Any idea how I can achieve that?

    Smoothness is a relative concept. Pencil tool in Flash doesn't produce very smooth lines. Nevertheless, runtime drawing smoothness depends on how often you draw lines between points. Here is a quick and dirty drawing board (just paste it on timeline). If you want it even smoother - you will need to write an algorithm that takes into account direction, speed, angles, etc.
    var board:Sprite = new Sprite();
    addChild(board);
    board.x = board.y = 20;
    var g:Graphics = board.graphics;
    g.beginFill(0xcccccc);
    g.drawRect(0, 0, stage.stageWidth - 40, stage.stageHeight - 40);
    g.endFill();
    board.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, startDraw);
    function draw(e:MouseEvent):void {
         g.lineTo(board.mouseX, board.mouseY);
    function startDraw(e:MouseEvent):void {
         stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, stopDraw);
         addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE, draw);
         g.lineStyle(1, Math.random() * 0xffffff);
         g.moveTo(board.mouseX, board.mouseY);
    function stopDraw(e:MouseEvent):void {
         removeEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE, draw);
         stage.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, stopDraw);

  • How to make smooth line by brush tool using shift key?

    Heya, I have a short question. Is there a way to make smooth line by brush tool using shift key, without that characteristic dot on the begining? I'm using PS CS6 on Win7.
    http://i.imgur.com/orGsIwv.jpg
    Cheers

    The shift key constrains the brush to paint a straight line. Those dark spots you see are from two paint strokes overlapping each other. If the flow or opacity of the brush is not at 100% you can see the stroke below it.

  • How to make smooth line movement?

    Hello!
    I've been searching it everywhere, but couldn't find anything in the net. I want to make smooth line movement. I've tried to create motion, but line just moves, and I want it to move smoothly according to the path. What I want to achieve can be seen here:
    http://www.noartistname.com/demo/
    But that's what I did so far - made movement out of several broken lines - how can I make more smooth movement?
    Thanks,
    Aleks.

    the easiest for non-coders is to tween a mask of the full line.  you can also use the flash drawing methods but that takes some coding.  see:
    www.kglad.com , click snippets, function graphs.

  • Why CPU Usage showing spiky line when Demand showing a smooth line?

    I always thought that CPU Demand should be identical with CPU Usage, because both are average. So the chart below comes as a surprise to me. This is from vCenter 5.5 Update 1. There is no contention, as can be seen from the Entitlement counter.
    The values are actually the same. The Demand line is somehow an average of the Usage. When both values are rolled up to 5 minutes, they become identical. The data at vCenter Operations shows that.
    Question: why is the line pattern so different? The Usage showing a spiky line while Demand shows a smooth line. The Demand line makes sense as it is an average of 20 seconds. The Usage is a bit strange as it fluctuates drastically.
    Thank you
    e1

    I had a discussion with a friend on this. The 2 counters are both average, and are tracking the same thing. One of them has to be the "wrong" one. We think the CPU Usage pattern is the misleading one, because each sample is 20 seconds. That is 20,000,000,000 nano seconds. There are also 2 low point for 1 high point. It is strange for a CPU to be low for 40 billions nano seconds, then spike for 20 billion nano seconds.
    The chart is from vCenter 5.5 Update 1. The host is ESXi 5.5
    What do you think?

  • Healing Brush "skips", leaves a line of brush-sized circles instead of a smooth line

    When I use the healing brush is tends to "skip".  It leaves a line of circles like a stamp would instead of a flowing line like it should leave.  No matter how slow I move the brush it leaves a circle and then as I continue to draw nothing happens until I reach the edge of the first circle, it then drops another circle and it continues that way as long as I draw with it.   The brush tool works fine, leaves a smooth line.  The Spot Healing and Patch Tool work fine but the healing brush will not heal in a smooth stroke.  It skips along a leaves a tail of circles the size of the brush.  I am using a fast computer, i7 processor, 16bg ram and a SSD drive so I do not think speed is an issue.  I upgraded from CS4 where the healing brush worked fine on this computer

    If the spacing of a tool's brush is 100% then it will behave as you described.
    Reduce the spacing to get a stroke without circles.
    Reset Tool as shown by R_Kelly will set the spacing to 25%, but it'll also reset the size and hardness of the brush and reset other options of the tool.

  • When using a path, jagged lines, not smooth lines, uneven lines

    I am using a Mac, photoshop CS5
    I created a path with Curves with the pen tool.
    filled it in with a color light blue.
    than I use the paint bucket to change it to dark blue.
    This is when the curved lines become jagged, not smooth, uneven.
    also I would like to use this as a mask, but with bg color changing from time to time.
    any solutions?
    GC

    Enable the retain transparency option when applying fills or use alternate colorization methods like using adjustment layers or creating the layer as a shape layer in the first place. Not sure what you mean by your mask thingy. You simply load the selection by Ctrl+clicking on teh layer thumbnail. this works no different than with any other layer.

  • How do I smooth lines in Photoshop Elements 11

    I need to smooth the black lines of a clipart picture (have taken out the colour with colour bucket and wish to use the black outline as a colouring picture for children).  The lines left are OK but a bit fuzzy in places, although not broken.  Is there a smoothing technique I can use on the lines?

    Try duplicating your image (Ctrl+J)
    Then go to the layers pallet (Window >> Layers) and change the blend mode of the top layer from Normal to Overlay and resave.

  • Brush strokes reshape themselves to smoother lines after I draw them. Solutions?

    I am currently working on a drawing that involves many jagged lines, and I was using a 3pt Pressure brush to work on the outline. However, once I draw the lines and lift my pen off the pad, the lines are reshaped into smoother forms.  Alot of the detail that I am trying to accomplish is smoothed out and taken away, especially with my sharp shapes.  Is there some sort of setting, or something i am missing that will stop this from happening?
    The pencil tool doesnt do this, and I would probably resort to it since it keeps my lines in tact. However, it sometimes deletes my original line when i draw too close to it, or it connects the lines. In the end, I am going to merge all the lines and marks ive made into one big shape.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    AAA! thank you! i knew there had to be an easy way to get to a solution, but searching the internet for answers is easier said than done. thank you!

  • Scaling a layer produces jaggy, not smooth lines.

    Hello.
      I have a screen-grab of a website that I need to scale down and rotate about 20º. I make it a smart object and then scale dwon and rotate. Works great.
      Except that the straight lines on the layer get a non-smooth jaggy look to them. Liek they are not being re-rasterized properly.
      This happens whether or not I make it a smart object.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for the reply.
      Here is the final (note the jaggy look of the top edge of the angled screen browser window image)

      Here is the actual page that needs to be angled.

  • How to smooth lines of original oil painting

    I had an artist paint an oil painting (on canvas) of our wedding venue to use as part of our wedding invitation. However, I didn't realize how an oil painting would print on paper and the brush strokes are nonuniform and visible. How can I smooth out the brush strokes?

    50mm will be fine.  I expect its sweet spot will be around f8
    Align the lens axis with the center of the image and perpendicular to the image.
    If the sun is bright, find some shade.  In fact find some shade anyway.
    Use a tripod
    Take a test image with a sheet of white paper in front to the painting to set white balance to in Photoshop. But try to take the image well away from any brightly coloured surfaces that might reflect colour onto the painting.
    DO NOT USE FLASH
    Try and leave an inch or two of space around the painting.  This will help you square it up in Photoshop
    Later versions of Photoshop have a Perspective Crop tool that would let you correct any out of squareness of the photograph, but you can still do this with CS5
    Open the image, and make any adjustments like black and white point.
    Copy the background layer.
    Turn on the grid (Ctrl ')
    Free Transform (Ctrl t)
    Hold down the Ctrl key, and drag each corner in turn to align the edges to the grid to square it up.
    Crop out what is left.
    Sharpen for print (View at 60% and go by the preview)
    Be amazed by how much better it looks compared to the scanned version
    Have a great special day, and best wishes to your SO

  • All tools in Photoshop CS5 not moving smoothly (only making dots instead of lines)

    All my tools in Photoshop CS5, including the brush, eraser, healing brush, etc. are only making dots, instead of drawing smooth lines. When using the brush tool, for example, if I click down and drag my mouse to draw something, only the initial dot for where I clicked down gets colored in. Does anyone have any ideas as to why?

    Does anything jump out to you that could be causing this problem? Also, my lasso tool doesn't work properly as I can't drag anywhere. The move tool also doesn't work properly. I can click down and drag a layer, but after I release my click, the layer moves back to its previous position. The only way to move any layers is by free-transforming them.

  • How do you smooth out lines in Photoshop CS5

    I have some black and white line art drawings. The lines are not smooth and sharp, and instead have tiny jagged edges. I tried using the smudge tool, and that does smooth out the lines but it also makes the lines a little sloppy. That's probably how the Smudge Tool got its name. Is there a way to use this incredible software to create smooth lines? I've learned how to create paths, but I can't figure out how to use the paths to change the line art. Maybe this is what I'm looking for?

    ...to use a Path then add a Stroke style, so that it remains editable?  .....

    If I understand your question correctly then the answer is yes.
    You can create an arbitrary path whose shape, open or closed, can remain editable throughout your session and it can be duplicated if needed.  That path can then be stroked with a pixel painting or editing tool. Lets say you create a new layer and stroke a path with a colored brush. You can then add a style to that layer, move that same path and add a different stroke on a second layer and then duplicate the path, move it and edit its shape and then do yet another stroke and style on a third layer. This is what I've done in the image below showing the stroke & styled paths as well as the vector path in the bottom path.
    Once a path has been stroked to a layer and has had a layer style applied it is only editable as pixels, but the shape remains as a path which can re restroked or moved or reshaped so flexibility is high.

  • Creating line art in photoshop

    Hi all,
    I have experimented with various tutorials and filters in photoshop hoping to replicate the clean smooth lines of the line art type image below (image based of a photo I presume).
    Does anyone know or can provide me with some tutorials on how to do such work.
    Any help would be great

    Probably done with the Trace function in a vector program.
    Similar results are possible but difficult with Photoshop.
