SMTP Port forward times out incoming mail

Hello-
I have an AirPort extreme with an AirPort Express WDS extension. In the Express, I've wired in my in-house mail server. I port forwarded both TCP and UDP for port 25 to the correct (static) IP address. With this configuration, mail frequently was dropped with the sending server getting a timeout error. After much struggle, I found that setting the default host as my mail server fixed everything. I enabled the firewall on the server and blocked all but the ports I'd been forwarding through the Extreme. All works well. The receiving mail server is Exchange 2003. The mail server on the Internet through which all of my mail bounces is running qmail. The bounce is what enabled me to monitor the log status as email was coming in.
My question is: why would making the server the default host have worked? I postulated that there was an additional port being used which is not now blocked by the Extreme, but since I firewalled out the same ports on the server, I don't feel that this could be the case. Furthermore, SOME email made it through but most of it did not. I saw nothing in the Extreme's SNMP log that indicated any blocking was going on.
I would MUCH rather simply port forward on the Extreme so if anyone has any idea why this would have been happening, I'd appreciate it. I should also note that before I installed my AirPort Extreme, this configuration with my old router (using port forwarding) worked flawlessly.
As a side note, I am running the Extreme in G-Only mode as some LinkSys cards on my network wouldn't behave if N was enabled.

Let us separate between the intermittent SMTP errors and the slowing down for the time being. What happens (and how long it takes) when you open a shell and connect to the SMTP server ? For example, try something like this:
]# telnet smtp.google.com 25 (if your smtp server is imap google)
try to send a simple message and see how long it takes, e.g.
helo smtp.google.com

  • The connection to the server on port 993 times out...

When I attempt to delete mail or move mail to my trash I receive the following error message:
"""The message could not be moved to the mailbox “Trash — iCloud”
the connection to the server :p01-map.mailme.com” on port 993 times out"""
I have never seen this before, anyway to correct it?

Regarding the iPhone (5 in my case) it works relatively well with charter.net IMAP and smtp functions at mobile.charter.well.  But does occassionally have sync problems as well.
To fix the problem with my MacBook Pro Mail app, the Apple senior tech could not determine the problem, so he told me to reinstall the app.  To do this I had to run the Archive and Install feature of the recovery disk (hold down cmd-r on reboot).  Of course this two two hours to complete, as well as run software updates.  And it did not fix the sync problem.
So??? This one has me stymied!
Oh, one other input.  The email app "Thunderbird" works perfectly with charter.net IMAP and its smtp, syncs every time!

  • ATTACHMENT TIMES OUT! Mail, Safari and Firefox (Hotmail, ISP webmail)

I have a problem recently appeared out of blue. It consists of the following:
every time I try to send attachment the server times out (e-mails without attachments are sent swiftly).
Mail asks for another server to be able to send e-mail. On Hotmail account and my ISPs webmail (both in Safari and Firefox) it gets stuck until I get logged out from the page.
I have MacBook Pro and use Tiger 10.4.10 and all the latest software updates. No antivirus software. On the internet side, I have 512 ADSL. Download works fine - full capacity, browsing is good except e-mail clients.
I did god knows what. Swiched off FileVault, turned off my router's firewall, chatted for hours with my ISP support (he's a hot guy but that wasn't the reason) while fiddling on both ends. Went to the 'hotspot' cafe where the problem continued. Then I realised that it wasn't ISP (thought, never trust a handsome guy) or my router, but something that is affecting both Mail application and browsers. Clients are breathing on my neck for artwork and I am stuck.
Could it be the latest security update? Could it be magic? Well, I don't believe in magic! Does anyone have a clue?
    Cheers,
    Dragan

forget about my last message, if you disable plugins you won't be able to see vids on youtube.
What I did is remove all the plugins that were not for video.
To erase plugins just open safari and be sure to enable plugins on the Preference tab.
So, after you've enabled plugins, Open Safari>Help>Installed plugins
This will show you all the plugins you have installed in your mac. Once you see the list:
    1. copy the name of the plugin file
    2. open a finder window
    3. paste the name of the plugin in the search box of the finder window
    4. delete the plugin
It worked for me, I think the culprit was either the Silverlight.plugin or the Quartz Composer.webplugin

  • SMTP very slow/errors and times out in mail.app

I have a series of account set up that are working great except for my work mail (exchange IMAP). The server it's on is pretty slow, and this is complicated in mail app as I get constant SMTP send errors "the server rejected the address...." it's very intermittent - I can have an hour where everything sends just fine, and others where it just doesn't work. Connection doctor takes at least 10 seconds to successfully connect.
Is there a way to adjust the time out value on mail.app so that it doesn't immediately fail to send?

  • Mail server fails to deliver message. Port 25 times out

I have a .mac account, my ISP is telecable.es.
Can't send any messages, they stay in out box. I receive following error message: "The outgoing mail server mail.telecable.es failed to deliver this message. The connection to server "mail.telecable.es" on port 25 timed out"
I've already tried port 587, it doesn't work either.
    Any help available?
    Thanks in advance,
    Don Guillermo

OK, that helps narrow things down. What you may need to do is enable password for logon. When I am in Canada my ISP is Shaw Cable. However, my email server is in the US. In the US when connected to my cable ISP I have no problem connecting to my email servers. However, Shaw Cable in Canada does not permit remote use of another mail server to send mail. So in order to use the SMTP server of my US hosted account I must use my username and password when using my US SMTP mail server.
Open Mail preferences, click on Accounts icon in the toolbar, then select your account and click on the Account Information tab. In the drop down menu at the bottom select "Edit the list." Select your SMTP server for your .Mac mail account (smtp.mac.com, I think.) Click on the Advanced tab, then select Password in the Authentication drop down menu. Enter you .Mac username and password. See if this works.
If the above doesn't work, then you need to try assigning the SMTP server address of your telecable provider (I don't know if you also need to enable authentication) and select this server as the SMTP server for your .Mac mail account.

there must be an easier way.

  • Port forwarding Time Capsule Airport 7.6.3

Network problems.  I want to run a free software called Maptool 1.3b89.  I created some sweet maps in OS version 10.7.5, and assembled players, but I can't connect with other computers.  I have the Time Capsule (router) with Airport version 7.6.3, updated, Cisco cable modem.  I updated Java when I installed Maptool, less than a month ago.
The Maptool Networking FAQ says UPnP is by far the easiest approach, furthermore,"(An alternative is called NAT-PMP, but they are functionally the same so the second won't be mentioned again.)  "This sounds as if one can plow ahead and get the same result.  Believing they were functionally the same, I enabled NAT-PMP, attempted to connect with the UPnP box checked, and Maptool returned: "no internet gateway devices found UPnP port mapping will not be available."
So I asked, "If I get the server enabled, will it work for windows, or just for mac clients?  Is this where it is functionally the same?"
Here is the response, though I'm not certain it addresses my concern:  "The NFAQ is incorrect if it says that NAT-PMP is the same as UPNP. NAT-PMP is a new protocol from Apple that only applies to the AirPort routers, although a lot of other routers now support it as well.  I'll fix the FAQ.  There will be a b90 build either tonight or tomorrow that will fix the UPNP bug, but it won't help with NAT-PMP since it's a different protocol.  I'll see if I can find a way to support NAT-PMP but it's not likely to be soon."
Does that translate to, give up or get a different computer, Mac user?
I searched these forums.  The suggestions aren't talking about version 7.6.3 of Airport.  They tell you to go to port mapping, which is not an option/selection offered.  The most useful post says my version of Airport is a toy hammer with no functionality, go get old Airport, version 5.6.  Did that using Unpkg.  Did not run both airports at the same time.  Followed another post that referenced Bit Torrent, thus, I enabled Nat-PMP, and mapped all four ports to 51234, the default port for Maptool.  Airport 5.6 returned: The airport utilty was unable to find your Airport wirless device after restarting, the settings for this wirless device have successfully updated, but there was a problem rejoining the wirless network or finding the Airport wireless device.  you may need to select your network from the Wi-fi menu and try again.
Lost wireless.  Did a backup from Time machine and still couldn't connect wirelessly.  Restarted and the wirless returned.
The NFAQ says UPnP won't work with port forwarding (at the same time) but that is what seems to need to happen on a Mac.  I tried portforward.com.  Does not have my router.  Followed instructions for the only featured Apple/Macintosh product, Airport Extreme.  Not even close.
I have clicked all the advanced buttons and menu choices through Airport and through (settings)network, and figured out you can click on the + sign.  The outdated portforward.com info says, "enter both the public and private boxes with the same port number," and shows two boxes, but I have four boxes: IPV4 port mapping, public (and private) UDP ports, Public (and private) TCP ports.  Should I fill all four with port 51234 and use the provided IP address?
I can't make my IP address static.  I followed the portforward guide and lost my internet connection. Portforward Open Port check tool says, "this program cannot be run in dos mode," with a giant code strip following. Excuse my ignorance, but why is a dos program set up to run a test that is embedded in a Macintosh installation guide? Is that an emulator or a different dos?    Shouldn't it be Unix or something?  It says if I have no internet connection (which I don't at this point) to restore my original settings. Futile.  The user guide offered here isn't my software version but it says to enable NAT-PNP and give the ip adress to the host, but Maptool isn't going to use this special IP because it will only see the public one, right?
I was tempted to buy one of their products like PCconfig but here is what they say, "Instead of manually configuring your network router, just pick your app from a list and update your router with a single click." but they don't bother to indicate whether it works for mac, don't feature my router, and it says you must pick an app, but Maptool is not featured in the giant list of users that, "you are forwarding ports for."  I tried to download PF Setup Static IP Address but the download was a Windows app, so I couldn't run it.
I have tried just enabling Nat-PMP by itself, Canyouseeme.org returns "firewall or ISP is blocking certain parts, error, I could not see your service on (my IP address) port 51234."  I have tried port mapping by itself to port 51234, which causes the time capsule to crash, requiring a backup and reboot to restore the wireless network, and both together, which is contrary to the way it is supposedly done with UPnP.
If I installed Windows that wouldn't change how it networks.  What is my next step, buy another router?
Downloaded Hamachi.  The tutorial no longer launches.  The tech data has removed the mac screen shots and not replaced them, but I can see the headings and blank spots where they should be.   I assume they aren't supporting new mac users.  Logmein was just as obscure.  I don't feel very confident about either product.  The freeware Virtual Network Provider gets reviews like, "hard to use," and "complex interface."
Thanks in advance for your consideration.

If you want to use maptool and it is only going to work with UPNP type router. Then simply replace the TC with a standard router.. it is less than $100 for a very reasonable one like Netgear WNDR3800 which has 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt, openwrt and gargoyle as well as netgear which is pretty but lacks features.
Bridge the TC and keep it as backup target for TM which is what it does best.. and wireless AP for apple devices.

  • Port Forwarding - Time Capsule

I am running on OSX 10.8.2 and using Airport Utility 6.2.  I want to set up port forwarding for another port other than 80.  I have security cameras that use port 80 and I can view from outside my network.  I recently set up Insteon products and having a port conflict as its looking at port 80.  Can someone give me a step by step in instructions (based on the versions of the software I stated above) on how to open port 1000 (port forward 1000)?  I honestly have no clue how I did it for my cameras because it works.  The area I added says something about "Public TCP Ports 22" but nothing about port 80.  In any case, any easy to understand, step by step instructions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

  • Port 993 time out server

Im already sick and tired on this subject - called my ISP the ysay i need to talk to apple
I called apple and all they tell me is to look at the email set up walk through as if I was a total idiot I told them I done that already, ok then delete your email acount (mac account) and set up again - I've done that already many times as well - theres no solution really here from apple and this has been going on for 3 weeks now -
Why can't apple come up with A SOLUTION to this man - Iam using an apple email and still the crap doesn't work
    this is really frustrating
AND STOP SENDING ME BACK TO THOSE STUPID TUTORIALS ON HOW TO SET UP AN EMAIL ACCOUNT OK THE THING IS THAT I NEVER MADE ANY CHANGES IN THE FIRST PLACE THE STUPID ERROR MESSAGES JUST SHOWED UP ON MY IMAC AND MACBOOK
NOT A HAPPY APPLE CUSTOMER HERE !!!!

Could Mail 4.5 be the problem? For over a year I use a G-Mail account and always noticed that it takes ages to send mail from my iMac with Snow Leopard (uses Mail 4.5). On my MacBook with (Mountain) Lion and my Android tablet, the mail is send instantly.
This week I started using my own mailserver in my private network. Mail 4.5 reads the IMAP structure perfectly but when transfering a file to it, I also get the timeout error for port 993. My two other computers that are running now under Marverics give no problem.
So two accounts giving problems on the same computer, rules out a wrong mail setup.

  • Port Forwarding Time Capsule With Bridge Mode

Whoever says that the Time Capsule opens all ports if it is in Bridge Mode, it does not.
I have put my Time Capsule in DMZ, firewall disabled, and it is still blocking ports, except for a couple (Apple Filesharing, Telnet,…)
My TC was set up in Bridge Mode as it SHOULD indeed open all ports, but this is not the case, it seems you have to add the ports yourself.
How it works is completely not intuitive and i would even consider it a bug.
Adding the following port configuration opened up the port, even though it was blocked before adding it with the TC in Bridge Mode.
This doesn't seem to work for all ports however, so i am at a loss as to what is going on
I'm using the following site to test the Network ports
    http://www.whatsmyip.org/port-scanner/
If anyone could explain or help out, that would be great
    Kind Regards,
    Cipher

Hi, Thank you both for your continued support!
The main router is from our ISP, it is remotely controlled by our ISP and they will not allow us to access it and adjust/view the configuration ourselves (dumb, i know, but can't be helped), which is why is i went with the DMZ option, as i don't want to keep having to call them, wait and trouble shoot every time a specific port needs to be opened.
That router goes to 2 floors in the building, with a switch on the first floor and another one on the second floor, this second one extends the network to the third floor. My Time Capsule is connected to this switch.
The main router from our ISP has the IP 192.168.254.150 set up to be in DMZ (per request) as well as the, what they call, "soft firewall" disabled.
My Time capsule has it's network setup manually, so it has the static IP mentioned just above, the router is the main router from our ISP
Currently the TC is set up to to share that IP address using DHCP & NAT, where the private IP range identifier is different from the one used by the main router (TC is using 10.0.X.X) resulting in a double NAT, but causing no problem since the IP identifier is different
Ports that need to be forwarded have been mapped in the TC
IPv6 is configured to be setup automatically and it's mode is set to Native
The TC also broadcasts a secure wireless network
My Main Desktop (running OS X Mountain Lion) is connected through ethernet, directly to the TC
I have tried connecting to an external server @ IP XX.XXX.XX.XX on port 7777, but the connection fails
That's pretty much it i think.

I'm not all that experienced with translating these results, but on the surface, it appears to be passing traffic.  However, I still cannt telnet to the public IP using port 25.  I am using Putty as my telnet client and it doesn't generate an error.  At no time am I able to interact with the prompt in the putty window. The putty window just closes abruptly after about 10 seconds.  Does the line in Phase 7 containing 'untranslate_hits=3' have anything to do with my issue?

  • Shut down times out because Mail fails to quit

    Hi there
I have a few macs here, and have noticed that some of the frequently do not shut down, as Mail (or other apps at times) fails to quit. It does not happen all the time, and does not happen on all Macs, but I have a couple, one G4 running 10.3.9, and a G5 running 10.4.11.
It's trivial, I know, but it interrupts our backup system...
    Thanks
    Macfool

Press   command + option + esc keys on the keyboard together at the same time.
    Wait.
    Force Quit window will open.
    Select Mail, if not already.
Click the "Force Quit" button at the bottom of the window.
    Wait. Mail should quit.
If this does not help, press and hold the power button for more than 7 seconds.
Computer will shut down. You may lose the unsaved work.
    Best.

  • My incoming mail server stopped working for the 3rd time Help?

This is the third time my incoming mail server stopped working any suggestions on how to repair this?
    Thank You!

If Apple replaced the logic board three times for the same issue, and the third board has now broken for the same reason, you may be able to ask Apple for a replacement machine. You're out of warranty, and Apple is under no obligation to do anything for you (unless the current logic board was replaced by Apple less than 90 days ago in which case it's still under warranty), however, as a good will gesture, they may be willing to exchange your system for another one. You can start at the Apple store or call Apple customer care directly.

  • Specifying SMTP port with JavaMail

    Hi,
I am trying to specify a non-default port for SMTP server when using JavaMail, but JavaMail seems to ignore my settings for the specific port. Regardless of my port setting, it seems to always use port 25 to connect to the SMTP server.
I am using JavaMail 1.4ea and I specify the SMTP port as following:
    props.put("mail.transport.protocol", "smtp");
    props.put("mail.smtp.host", mailhost);
    props.put("mail.smtp.port", smtpPort);
Regardless of what the smtpPort is above, JavaMail always connects to port 25 as shown in the debug output below:
    DEBUG: setDebug: JavaMail version 1.4ea
DEBUG: getProvider() returning javax.mail.Provider[TRANSPORT,smtp,com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport,Sun Microsystems, Inc]
DEBUG SMTP: useEhlo true, useAuth false
DEBUG SMTP: trying to connect to host "test.server.com", port 25, isSSL false
Has anyone seen this behavior ? Is there a different way to specify an alternative port for the SMTP server ?
    Thanks.

Thanks for your suggestion. You were right on the mark.
The problem with my code was that smtpPort was int, and autoboxing made it Integer and added to the props without any compile time problems. But props.getProperty("mail.smtp.port") returns null unless the value is String. That caused JavaMail to use the default port.
props.setProperty(String key, String value) would have been a safer
    way to set this.
    Thanks again.

  • POP and SMTP ports

Does anyone knows how to use different POP3 and SMTP ports on CCA? My mail server does not use the standard ones... I tried to use pop.host.com:port but I only got timeouts and host unreachable errors.
    Thanks

There is no way to do that? I changed my email server but I really doubt customers would do the same. Also I could not find any way to use SMTP authentication, did I miss a config somewhere?
