Snow Leopard 10.6.4 not showing Windows 7 Machines on Finder's Shared

Hi,
After a long, LONG, LOOOOOOONG time searching for an answer and trying different settings all over making a Mac OS the Master Browser finally solved the problem for me.
This is not about sharing, this is not about any of the other thousand issues that working with Windows' Samba might have.
Anyway, to put it simple, you need to edit /etc/smb.conf file as root. For that, open a Terminal and type:
+sudo nano /etc/smb.conf+
keep going down until you reach this part, then add the text in bold as shown:
+; Pull in system-wide preference settings. These are managed+
+; by smb-sync-preferences.+
+include = /var/db/smb.conf+
+; Pull in system share configuration. These are managed+
+; by smb-sync-shares.+
+include = /var/db/samba/smb.shares+
*+; Forcing Master Browser+*
*+os level = 65+*
*+preferred master = yes+*
*+local master = yes+*
[printers]
+comment = All Printers+
Close the file with Control + X and then Yes for saving.
Now just go to System Preferences, Sharing and turn ON File Sharing, click in Options and turn "Share files and folders using SMB (Windows)" to ON. If it was ON already, just turn it OFF and then back ON to restart the service (nmbd).
In a few seconds, or minutes depending on the network, your Mac should become the local browser and then the PCs will appear in your Finder.
You can check if your Mac is the Master Browser by typing this in a Terminal:
+nmblookup -M -- -+
The Master Browser IP that will appear there should be your Mac's.

No worries Per,
OS X uses "old" protocols for MS Networks, that are compatible with WIn XP/2003 and prior, but not fully compatible with Windows Vista/7/2008 and later.
The upshot of this is that OS X works (close to) perfectly on a network with a Windows XP master browser or a Windows 2003 Domain Controller.
On a network with a Windows Vista/7 Master Browser or Windows 2008 Domain Controller, it fails to be able to populate the network list. This means that the user is forced to manually identify and connect to servers.
On a private network, where I am in full control of the machines, I can force OS X to win the Master Browser election by starting it first. The Windows Vista/7 machines then start up but do not force a re-election, because there is a Master Browser in place.
On a corporate network running Windows 2008 Domain Controller - the OS X user is at a real disadvantage.
As far as I know all of this arises because Apple is on an old version of Samba - because the Samba changed their licensing requirements some time ago. With a bit of luck Apple will do something about this in Lion.
Cheers,
Rodney

  • Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion erase my Windows partition?

    Dear all,
I know some one might have asked it but I just wanna re-confirm.
Would the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion erase my Windows partition? I am currently using Bootcamp on my Macbook Pro (Late 2010 Version) and I do not have parallel desktop. I asked the same question when Lion was released, but HK Apple Store said YES and Melbourne Apple Store said no. I am a bit confused now.
    Thank you for answering. Cheers!

    Nothing.
That said, you should ALWAYS have a backup as anything can happen at anytime.

After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion I cannot access a PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start. i upgraded to snow leopard but iphoto was not included. How do I install iphoto on snow leopard 10.6.8?

IPhoto is not included in any OS upgrade. It is a seperate application. Unless you choose to erase your drive when you upgrade no application including iPhoto is affected by the upgrade (except potential compatibility issues). If you need to reinstall iPhoto for and reason you do it from the original source. Either
1- the restore disks that came with your computer
    Or
2- the iLife DVD upgrade that you purchased
    Or
    3- the App store

  • Hello, I want to know if will lose my apps if I upgrade to Mavericks? I I have Snow Leopard, and I have not because I have fear of losing my apps

hello, I want to know if will lose my apps if I upgrade to Mavericks? I I have Snow Leopard, and I have not because I have fear of losing my apps

You will only lose Power PC apps.
To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Mavericks.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

Though device manager shows IP as its registered address, but emulator does not show the device emulator in its devices list.
emulator.exe -Xquery ------------> does not show windows mobile emulator it its devices list.
Can anyone please help for this. Without this am not able to run my J2ME application on windows mobile emulator.
FYI: I have installed MS Virtual PC but windows mobile 6 emulator is not binded to Virtual Machine Network Services Driver. Because, I am not getting this in drop-down list of adpaters.
I believe it will not make any effect.

    Hey,

I have solved the problem though, well not me really, I found it in one of the other threads on here about not being able to see the iPhone on iPhoto.
Go through your Camera Roll and get rid of all the pictures in there that weren't taken with the iPhone camera, I had pictures in there that people had sent me via MMS and pictures that I had downloaded from e-mails. I e-mailed myself any important pictures and deleted the rest, leaving just all the photos I had taken with the iPhone camera. Connected to the computer and the iPhone is showing in My Computer again.
    Hope this helps everyone here.
Thanks bkbooth11 I did as you suggested and that fixed the problem. Hopefully they will patch that soon as it is rather inconvenient.

  • Since Snow Leopard, Mac Pro will not sleep with Apple wireless keyboard

I have an odd problem, now on 2 Mac Pro (Nehalem) with 10.6.1:
Since Snow Leopard, the system will not sleep as long as a) the user is logged on (any users/profile) and b) the Apple aluminum wireless keyboard is 'attached'.
If I log off first, sleep works fine. If I turn the keyboard off first, it's fine. But if hitting 'sleep' when logged on, the screen turns dark, sleep process begins, but the system comes right back (with a note 'keyboard disconnected'.
It's as if the keyboard disconnects after sleep, but the system still monitors it, and wakes up.
Note: Wake for bluetooth devices IS NOT ENABLED!
Here is the console log (relevant info):

Does anyone have any idea? While on, the keyboard never disconnects - i.e. I don't have any other issues with BT or the keyboard (this is the 2nd I tried).
Also, my apologies for double-posting this earlier in a different forum; cheers!

    Hi,
    and thanks for posting that.
That's too bad. I am probably going to log off if needed, rather than going wired, but I can't believe that this might be more prevalent than just me and there is no 'fix'...

  • How open a file and not showing window?

I write a script to do some work automatic,
for Indesign script, its application open method could open a file and not showing window,
the open method has a parameter [ShowingWindow] (if true, show the document window).
That is good a feature for me.
But with Illustrator, the application open method hasn't the same feature.
    Open

Is there any other methods could do that?

  • Snow leopard can't be installed on my machine.

Alright, here goes. Thank you in advance.
    BACK STORY:
I have an Intel iMac. I've had it for a few years and it's always been awesome. I was running Leopard, and it was all gravy. So much so, that I even took it in to my Apple store to see if there was anything I needed to do to protect my machine, or if there were any updates for my machine that I should purchase. Dude at genius bar said yea, there is an iLife update and a new version of OS, Snow Leopard. He told me he would update my macbook (which was getting a new hard drive put in) for me and show me how to do it, so that when I got home with my iMac, I could do the same update to it. iLife 11 and Snow Leopard installed perfectly on my Macbook (my secondary computer). I tried to installed Snow Leopard verbatim what the Apple associate showed me, with his written directions. Popped in my disc, selected English, install began, got about 1/3 of the way through the progress bar and an error message came up reading "Snow Leopard can't be installed on this machine". Interesting. Apple store guy said I was good to go?
    DIAGNOSIS FROM APPLE STORE:
I took my iMac back to the apple store the next day, with my macbook incase I needed to run a firewire from iMac to Macbook to transfer files. Dude tried to save some of my data but couldn't access it. He told me there was a OS conflict and he was unable to archive and install. He gave me a card with all the information for a data recovery service and told me I was SOL. Great. I took my mac in to make sure it was good to update, he said yes, and then I did it, in turn frying my main computer into a useless paperweight.
    FUNCTIONALITY:
When I try to turn on my iMac now, it goes to a grey screen with an apple and a spinning gear. This screen stays up for about 45 seconds and then the computer shuts off. I've connected a firewire to the iMac and my Macbook and held the T key down in an effort to save my photos and music etc. The firewire symbol comes up on the iMac, but nothing appears in my finder on my Macbook like an external hard drive would. If I put the Snow Leopard disc in, and hold the T key, the Snow Leopard disc will show up in my Macbook's finder/desktop. If I put the Snow Leopard disc in the iMac and boot it up the computer just shuts down, even if I hold the C key. If I boot with the Leopard disc and hold C, the disc will mount and I can re-install Leopard, but I get a warning that all of my data will be erased in doing so. Obviously I don't want to part with 200+ GB of data. My last back up was about a month before all this so it won't be the end of the world but there are photos and other things that are recent to my hard drive with no back up and that I'd rather not lose if I don't have to.
    BASIC INFORMATION:
I'm 24 with a bachelors degree and I am very comfortable with my mac. AKA you don't have to reply like you're teaching your grandma how to email.
My iMac IS an Intel iMac.
I have 47 GB of free space on it, plenty of room for an OS update.
Firewire ports are FW400 on both computers.
I had to archive and install Leopard once about a year ago on my iMac. Not sure why there was issue, but the problem was fixed when I did this.
So, do I have any options here besides erasing my hard drive? Has anyone ran into this before. Sorry for the rant. Thank you again.

Attach an external hard drive to the iMac. Boot from the Snow Leopard disc again, launch Disk Utility, go into the Restore tab, select the internal drive as the source, select the external drive as the destination, and restore. Then partition -- do not merely erase -- the internal drive, and see whether you can install onto it. If you can, use Migration Assistant to restore your data from the backup.
Not backing up = inevitable data loss.

  • PS CC 2014 not showing up in Mac Finder after update

Just did the update/install of PS CC 2014, and while I can see the application in my applications folder if I do a spotlight search, it does not show up in Mac Finder when I go to my applications folder. Actually this is the case for several CC 2014 apps after the update. For example, Muse CC 2014 and InDesign CC 2014 show up in my applications folder, but not Illustrator CC 2014 or PS CC 2014. Anybody else experience this and/or have a resolution? I did a restart after the cc 2014 app updates to see if that would fix anything, but it didn't.
It's annoying to have to do a spotlight search to reinstall all my plug-ins and to just launch the app.

Craig, thanks for the reply, but it's not a matter of updating the dock icons after the update. I realize I need to drag the new CC 2014 apps to the dock if I want to access them there. It's more of an issue where all the CC 2014 app updates except Muse and InDesign weren't showing up in my HD > Applications folder where every other app on my machine resides. Instead, most of the CC 2014 updates got installed to my User > Applications folder for some bizarre reason. Those updates are the ONLY apps in that folder.
Anyone know why they would get installed there instead of the normal HD > Applications folder?

  • I have a disk inserted into my MAC that is not showing up in the Finder side bar. How do I eject it?

I have a disk inserted into my MacBook Pro that is not showing up in the Finder side bar. How can I get it "ejected?" (I've checked in system preferences under CDs & DVDs and did not find a solution.)

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
