Snow Leopard - Windows 7 - Parallel Desktop 5

I have read and read on this topic but can't find what I am looking for. I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch 2.53 ghz 4 gb ram 500 gb hard drive. What should I get windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit? What are the pros and cons?

You aren't providing any information, what do you want to use it for? Keeping in mind most Windows software is 32 bit unless you plan on upgrading your Windows software library to 64 bit when/if it becomes available you should probably stay with 32 bit. However that being said if you get 64 bit it will run 32 bit software so you have future proofed yourself by installing Windows 7 64 bit you just won't see any performance increases because your Windows applications will be 32 bit.
It's that simple.

  • Is it possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?

    Hey All,
Anyone know if it is possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?
I am using SPSS 16 and it is not compatible with snow leopard. A temporary fix right now if I partitioned my hard drive and installed Leopard on some extra space to run SPSS. This is kind of annoying because I only need Leopard to use SPSS. I would rather emulate it so I can listen to iTunes and check my email in SL.
What about Panther? I think I even have a copy of Panther to install in Parallels?
I read somewhere that the EULA restricts OS X from being emulated, which seems odd for Mac users who need to test or use old software. I understand though about emulating OS X on windows machine though. I guess they need to blow off the whole foot than just cut off one toe.
    Thanks for the thoughts!

From what I can tell, doing this would be, at best, of dubious legality.
Even so, the popular opinion seems to be that it would take some degree of hacking to pull off a virtual machine running OS X. I think that unless you are willing and able to undertake such a task, your best bet is to stick with a partition running an old version or wait for SPSS to be updated for Snow Leopard.
Although...... I have Parallels 4 (current version is 5) and it has an option, when setting up a new Virtual Machine, to install Mac OS X server (see image linked below). Perhaps if you could get a copy of the server edition of the OS you would have more success?

  • Snow Leopard and Parallels

I have just upgraded my I-Mac to Snow Leopard, so am now at 10.6.3. It appears that I can no longer use my Parallels virtual machine with 10.6.3: I am told that Apple does not permit Snow Leopard to be used in that way. This is not exactly good news. Does that mean I need to go on up to Lion? If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.

    No problem.
my attempts to start Parallels are greeted with the response 'You can't use this version of the application Parallels Desktop.app with this version of Mac OS X'.
Exactly, you need to Software update to 10.6.8, then visit Parallels and find out what version you need to upgrade that software to work with 10.6.8.
Likely it's a paid upgrade, so be prepared for that.
I have now moved up to 10.6.8 (amazingly, the Snow Leopard upgrade takes you only to 10.6.3, which is falsely described on the box as 'new'),
10.6 is "new" OS X version/upgrade, at that time it was released, pressed into disks and mass produced boxes.
Software update brings you from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 which the .3 or .8 at the end are merely updates and not a upgrade.
    upgrading 10.5 to 10.6 is a upgrade
    updating 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 is a update,
It appears, then, that I have to upgrade Parallels. Please can one of you kind people tell me which version of Parallels I should be moving to,
Don't know, you have to visit Parallels site and ask, I use VMFusion for a virtual machine program.
and why I would need a new OEM Windows disk to do it?
Don't need that, he was responding to my post.
Can I not simply upgrade the existing Parallels software without reloading the Windows OEM disk?
Yes if Windows is already installed in Parallels, simply updating the Parallels program should take the pre-existing Windows virtual machine file and use that like before.
With virtual machine software, other operating systems are simply files that are opened up by the program called Parallels, so newer versions of Parallels should almost always open older files it made.

  • Running PC CS4 suite on Snow Leopard using Parallels

Hi.  I have a gig coming up where I will need to do some overnight video editing while on location at the end of the day for the next day's show.  I would like to purchase a Macbook with Snow Leopard for this purpose (up to now I've been strickly PC for all Adobe products).  The problem I'm facing is that I have a PC desktop with CS4 Production Premium on it, and I don't want to have to loose my PC license to convert it to a Mac to run on the Macbook because I would not be able to activate it back on the PC.
So my question is if I were to get a Macbook (latest one), and install the PC version of CS4 while in Parallels, will the performance be there?  I understand that running natively in the Mac OS would be optimum but I'm asking if I were to run it all in emulation mode (temporarily), would I be ok?  I just need to know if anyone is doing this currently and is experiencing issues and what they are.  Can I load up Premiere Pro CS4, edit video, send to Encore, burn DVD all in Parallels I guess is my main concern.
    Thanks.

If you're going to do video editing and stuff, I think I would shy away from the Parallels approach and just go all out and create a separate Windows partition. Boot Camp automates this process, asking how much of the HD you want to allocate to it, etc then asking for your Windows Installer disc.
At that point you have a fully functional Windows box but you can also reboot into Mac OS X when you're not using Windows apps. (It is also possible to boot the Windows partition with Parallels if you just need brief access to it.)
At startup you can either choose to boot into Windows or OS X. Just hold down option key to see your choices.

  • Getting ready for Snow Leopard + Windows 7... help?

I have a currently 300g Hard Drive in my early 2008 MacPro (with 50g free), and really want to go to a dual-boot w/ Snow Leopard and Windows 7 here in a few months.
I have another internal drive that's 750g, and I'm thinking of using that one as my startup drive. That way (obviously) I can partition it and have more room for both operating systems (2/3 Snow Leopard, 1/3 Windows)
My question is this: What's the best way to go about this?
Should I go ahead and partition that drive, and then copy my current system onto the 2/3rds I want to use for Snow Leopard, and then turn off my computer and swap the drives?
Anything to "look out for" when partitioning? I've never done it before...
After I swap the drives, I automatically start-up on the correct partition?
Also, is 750g too big for a startup drive?
Maybe stupid questions, but I'm really looking forward to both of these operating systems coming out, and I want to make sure I get it right!
    tia,
    e

I actually want to put both on the 750, so I can have all the rest of my internals be 1tb each (i keep my video editing stuff on one, my audio editing on another, and my iTunes on the other).
Just make sure you've got all that stuff backed up. Lots of people get a false sense of security, thinking "My stuff isn't on the boot drive, so it's safe," but this couldn't be further from the truth. Maybe this is unneeded advice, but just in case, I'd recommend reading my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> (or some other backup reference).
So... I just zap the 750, partition it in Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Clone my existing Startup Disk to the correct partition, and then "point" to that as my startup volume in SysPrefs? Right?
If you're using Parallels, rather than Boot Camp, partitioning is completely unnecessary. Other than that, yes, you've got it.

  • External Hard Drive with Snow Leopard/Windows 7

I just bought a 500GB external HD that I would like to be able to use with Snow Leopard AND Win 7. I won't be using it for any Time Machine backups. I just want to be able to read/write files on it with both Leopard and Win 7.
Is there any recommended format procedures in order to be able to do this. I may be wrong, but I don't think I can read/write to my external Time Machine external hard drive with my Windows lap top running Win 7.

a TM drive must be formatted mac os extended and windows can't even read that without extra software like Mac Drive. It also requires that the partition scheme be GUID which it's most likely not at the moment so repartition the drive with correct partition scheme now if you do decide to use it for TM in the future. also, snow bootcamp drivers once you install them in windows will let you red (but not write) to mac os extended formatted drives.
the only FS which is natively read+write from both OS X and windows is FAT. but it's very old and has many deficiencies especially on the OS X side.
    but it's good for interoperability.
or you can format the drive NTFS and use some software like NTFS-3g or NTFS for mac by paragon to make it writable from OS X.
you may also wish to split the drive in two partitions and format them differently.

  • Snow Leopard and Parallels 9 - No Sound or AirPort

    Hello,
Well, I was finally able to create a VM for Snow Leopard Server to use on Mavericks but there's one problem which I need fixing... it seems it is not detecting my in-built speakers or AirPort card (maybe more).
Does anyone know how I could sort this out? Everything works well outside the VM, and I've checked the configuration of the VM many times and they all seem correct. Am I missing something?
I would post on the Parallels forum but I found a couple of threads explaining the same problem with no answers created a few years back.
Sorry I'm pretty stupid when it comes to these sort of things haha
    Cheers
    Leon

Well, after some digging I've finally solved my sound problem, I can do without the AirPort usage as it still connects to AirPort bu indirectly which means slower connect... I think haha
But if anyone has had the same issues then this short documentation should help http://kb.parallels.com/120937
Make sure to install the Audio 10.5 file not the 10.9 version otherwise it won't work (or that's what I found out with my machine)

  • How can I run Snow Leopard on parallels?

I have recently changed my Powerbook G4 to a Macbook Air running Yosemite and have an accounts package called MYOB which requires ppc compatibility.
I have a Snow Leopard (and also a Leopard) disc and have tried to load them as guest OS on Parallels but to no avail. It seems that although I have purchased these OSs I need to buy a multi use licence or server version to make them work. Is this true and if so where can I purchase the necessary serial?

  • Mac Pro 2010 triple boot (Snow Leopard + Windows + Yosemite)?

    Hello All,
This is my first question here, I'm usually trying to find the answer myself, but this time I wasn't able to find anything clear enough to me. So I hope that someone can give me clear and easy to understand answer. I must also tell that my English isn't perfect, but should be more than good enough for communication. :-)
I have Mac Pro 2010, 4 core CPU 3.2 GHz, 6 GB RAM, ATI 5870.
HD Bay 1: WD Black 1 TB - Boot Snow Leopard 10.6.8
(Just to add: I am happy because when I bought my Mac it came with 10.6. I am happy with it, it's stable, and I want to keep it as it is)
HD Bay 2: WD Black 1 TB - Boot Windows 7 x64 (bootcamp, full drive)
(I am very happy how it works, so I want to keep it as is)
HD Bay 3: WD Green 2 TB - for all kind of data storage
HD Bay 4: Was empty until yesterday, but now I have another WD Black 1 TB to put it in - still not formatted.
I would like to install Yosemite on that new drive (first I was thinking about Maverick, but then I saw that some new applications will not run, like Final Cut Pro X, new MS Office, still in beta, plus I would like to use iMessage, etc.), and keep everything else as it is now - absolutelly untouched.
    • Is it safe to do it, or I can make some mistake and lose Snow Leo and/or Windows?
    • Is position of the drives important? Should I, for example, put new drive in a Bay 3, and move data disk to Bay 4, or it doesn't matter?
    • When I download it from App Store, and when installation starts automatically, do I have an option to select to keep untouched everything I have now?
(I don't want even to collect any data from Snow Leopard, like mail settings, bookmarks, applications installed - absolutely nothing, it should run as a totally new comp and without any interaction with Snow Leopard, except ordinary hard disk access, like any other hard drive)
    • Will my bootcamp drive be safe, I will still be able to boot from it?
I was also thinking about this:
I saw that it is possible to make bootable USB flash drive with installation. If I do that, and if I phisically unplug all other drives except a new one, then do installation, shut it down, and plug back all other drives, will everything work? Will I have triple boot when I press option key during start-up? Does all this makes sense at all to you?
Finally, does anyone have some experience with Mac Pro 2010 + ATI 5870 with Yosemite? Is it smooth, no problems with graphics or some other things?
I will really appreciate some answer about all this.
    Cheers!

Some tips about Yosemite and Core Storage from MacIntouch Reader Reports on Yosemite:
    Ric Ford [MacInTouch]
Yosemite's changes have led to questions and confusion about disk formatting and partitioning issues, backward compatibility, and dual-booting Mac OS X 10.6 and Yosemite. Below are a few notes on these issues from an email discussion (questions, tips and clarifications are welcome).
Core Storage changes debuted in OS X 10.7 Lion, with Apple's new FileVault 2 whole-disk encryption and hidden Recovery Partition.
Generally, running OS X 10.7 and up shouldn't corrupt or convert the HFS+ partitions used by pre-OS X 10.7 systems (still supported in later OS X versions). There are, however, a few special cases to beware, and this is where things get confusing. Here are some specific issues:
    1) FileVault 2 encryption and "Fusion" drives both depend on Core Storage, so applying those to any partition will render it inaccessible by pre-OS X 10.7 systems.
    2) Yosemite's installation process silently converts a partition to Core Storage, incompatible with Mac OS X 10.6 and earlier. Ars Technica's review describes this issue.
    3) Running Disk Utility's "repair" function in Yosemite against a Mac OS X 10.6 (HFS+) partition has caused problems in some cases, such as making the Mac OS X 10.6 partition unbootable.
(A search for Core Storage on MacInTouch will turn up more discussion and tips.)

  • Cannot print Snow Leopard - Windows 7 x64 Shared Printer

I need to configure printer sharing between a 64-bit Win7 Ultimate dektop and a Macbook Pro laptop running OS X Snow Leaopard (10.6). I have followed all of the conventional wisdom I can find on the net without success.

All updates applied to both systems, latest printer drivers on both.

Both systems in the same homegroup on the same subnet. IP addressed assigned via DHCP but preconfigured at the router -- essentially, fixed.

I've tried this with AV and firewalls on and of on both machines; same results
File sharing works in both directions

Win7 configured as follows:
All Print and Document Services Enabled
Printer: Canon Pixma MX700 connected via USB
Share This Printer on for both printer and FAX (it’s a MF printer)
Network discover: on
File & printer sharing: on
Anyone with network access can read/write
Media streaming: off
Enable sharing for devices that use 40- or 56- bit encryption
Password protected sharing: off
Allow windows to manage homegroup connections
Network profile set to Work

Snow Leopard configured as follows:
    System preferences->Print&Fax->Add Printer->Advanced
    Add printer
    Type = Windows
    URL= smb://user:password@workgroup/cptrname/MX700 -or-
    URL = smb://user:password@workgroup/192.168.1.10/MX700
Print using: Chhose a Driver or Printer Model: Camon Pixma MX700
The printer configures successfully and I can queue print jobs from the Mac. It shows up in the appropriate print queue on the Windows machine as Remote Downlevel Document and hangs in Spooling state. The only way to delete the document is to reset the print subsystem on the Mac.
I also tried unchecking “Enable bidirectional printing” under the printer properties on the Mac to no effect.

Your issue is with the Canon driver. It cannot be used on the Mac when you have the Canon inkjet shared by Windows. For these types of connections, you need to use an alternate driver, such as the Gutenprint driver set.
The only problem with Gutenprint is that your MX700 is not listed as a supported printer. So, you could spend hours trying to find which of the other Canon models that are supported by Gutenprint will work to your printer. Or, you could look at purchasing PrintFab.

  • Triple Boot; Mavericks, Snow Leopard & Windows 7

    Hello
Has anyone had experience of creating an installation that can triple boot, Snow Leopard, Mavericks & Windows 7?
I have software that can only run 10.6.8, some that will only run 10.7 or beyond and some Windows only. I'd like to use a single machine.

  • Snow Leopard + Windows Vista =?

Yesterday I just purchased Vista Home Basic (don't ask, it was required for a business class) and installed it via Bootcamp. I also purchased Snow Leopard today with the upgrade deal ($10 for a new OS!?) but my concern is whether I'll have to reformat and reinstall Vista after I update my current Leopard OS to Snow... will it be a seamless transition, or will I have to re-partition my HDD and such? Just a worry, and if you can put my mind to rest I would be grateful.
    Thank you in advance.

but my concern is whether I'll have to reformat and reinstall Vista after I update my current Leopard OS to Snow
No, you won't. When in VIsta, insert the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD and install the updated drivers. If you need to repartition or erase the drive for some reason, WinClone can be used to back up and restore Windows instead of needing to reinstall it.

  • Snow Leopard + Windows.....

Question, I am really very interested in Snow Leopard, however for some customers it will be vital to connect their few PC's to Snow Leopard Server to access all the new features, CalDAV and CardDav etc.
Without this vital connection they might go for something else which would be a shame...
Is apple going to produce an installer for windows to access these lovely features ???
    I hope so...

Why do you expect Apple to ship an installer for these?
CalDAV and CardDAV are open standards. As such any vendor can add support to their own products (doesn't even need OS support - the application can do it all on its own).
Check out http://caldav.calconnect.org/implementations/clients.html for a list of CalDAV-compliant clients or http://carddav.calconnect.org/implementations/clients.html for CardDAV clients.

  • How can I upgrade windows parallels desktop, now moved to Incompatible Software?

I just upgraded the OS to Mountain Lion and was surprised to learn that my Parallels desktop will not work.  It seems my Mac suggests that I buy the software again, but surely it must be possible to upgrade it?  I am a rather new Mac user and am rather lost

    HI,
For reference, I am running Parallels 7.0.15106.786747 under Mountain Lion with a Windows 7 Ultimate VM without major issues. The only problem I have encountered is an unresponsive Parallels menu once the VM is up and running. I have to shut show the VM and restart Parallels in order to access the menu items (e.g., to get the version number for this post).

Will I protect my iMac if I introduce Norton in my Windows' Paralles desktop 7 for Mac?
    Thanks

    Hello:
IMHO, NEVER use Norton (or any other A/V software) on a Mac.  There are no viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.
What you do with Windows is up to you.  In answer to your question, your Windows and OS X systems are separate.
