Snow Leopard won't always wake from sleep mode

Most of the time the system functions fine, but at least once a week, I cannot wake it from sleep mode using the mouse, space bar, or keys. I have to do a hard reboot, which I don't like doing. Are there settings I can adjust properly (Energy Saver or Computer Sleep time or Display time) to stop this from happening? Should it take a few seconds after I hit the space bar?
Or should I just shut it down at night or for periods of several hours?
Is there anything wrong with never letting it sleep? Thanks!

  • Newest 8-core Mac Pro won't always wake from sleep.

Recently I have been experiencing my Mac Pro not always waking up from sleep. It is a 2.4 Ghz 8-Core running Snow Leopard. I am using a USB keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse. I am noticing that it is becoming more frequent and it's starting to worry me with how expensive this computer is.  If I had to guess, I would guess that it happens more often after long sleep durations. The only way to get it to turn on is by holding down the power to turn it off and then doing a reset. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Macbook won't always wake from sleep

Occasionally my Alu Macbook won't wake up from sleep. The keyboard backlight comes on, but the display won't wake. Sometimes the machine is quite hot and the fans are blasting too. Only a power cycle will fix it and then there's a message about OS X restarting unexpectedly.
    Any ideas?

  • IMac (Early 2009) always wakes from sleep after Security Update 2010-001

I posted this already in the Snow Leopard section, but wasn't able to get a resolution to the problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2309613&tstart=0
I tried all the suggested things, but my iMac still always wakes from sleep and this never happened before the 2010-001 security update. I was asked to paste the console log entry from when this happens, so here it is:
    28/01/2010 08:57:47 kernel Wake reason = OHC2
    28/01/2010 08:57:47 kernel System Wake
    28/01/2010 08:57:47 kernel Previous Sleep Cause: 5
28/01/2010 08:57:47 kernel USB (OHCI):Port 1 on bus 0x6 has remote wakeup from some device
I'm wondering if others have seen this and if so know of a solution. At the moment I'm stuck with having to shutdown my iMac every time I leave it. Thanks.

Here is a solution that should work:
    1. Turn off all Bluetooth devices connected to your computer.
    2. Make sure Bluetooth icon in the Menu Bar is black (BT is On) and BT is not connected to anything
    3. Plug in a USB mouse
    4. Go to System Preferences>Bluetooth>Advanced
    5. The option to "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" should now be uncheckable>Uncheck it and click OK
    6. Turn on your Bluetooth devices and let them connect to your Mac
    7. Try and put your Mac to sleep and then wake with the power button
    8. Check if the "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" option is still unchecked (it should be)
    9. Try and restart your Mac and check again if the "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" option is still unchecked (I had mixed results with this test, depending on the type of the Mac being tested)
Anyhow, this way you should be able to uncheck the option that causes the issue and it should not get checked again by itself unless you restart your computer and maybe even after that. If it does get checked again after reboot, just get used to putting your Mac only to sleep until a fix from Apple is available or repeat the above process after every reboot if necessary.
    Hope this helps.

  • Compter won't wake from sleep mode

My Pavilion 17 notebook computer, purchased in Oct. '13, won't wake from sleep mode; I must shut down and reboot each time.  I know this is not due to Windows 8, as I have another Win 8 computer that works normally.

I've done some more experimentation and found a workaround. I had Sleep and the Screensaver both set to Never, and by activating the Screensaver the wake up issue has gone away. This doesn't change the fact that there is an issue with my ATV sleeping when it shouldn't and failing to wake up, but having the screensaver active stops it sleeping in the first place I guess.
It's slightly annoying because I like to have music playing with the description and album art running, and this disappears when the screensaver comes on, but it is better than unplugging the thing every time I use it. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next update, because it only appeared in the last one.

  • PowerBook won't wake from sleep mode

My PowerBook G4 won't wake from sleep mode. I open the lid and nothing happens. I hold down the power button and nothing happens. I resetted the PMU and it will wake up and I am able to login and then it goes back to sleep mode. What should I do please help? And if my computer is dead, is there any way to retrieve my information saved on the hard drive?

this would happen to me when my battery was dead. you test the battery life? (little button on bottom near battery)
I'd make sure it was plugged in and let it charge for 10 minutes or so. then try restarting it if it doesnt wake up by itself.

  • Helix 20CG won't wake from sleep mode

    Hi
After doing all updates (windows/lenovo) and ensuring latest lenovo power managers are installed, my Helix 20CG will still not wake from sleep mode. This problem has been persistant since the second day I had the computer.
If the Helix is in sleep mode for more than 2 hours and you press the power button, the screen will not turn on. However if the tablet is docked on the ultrabook keyboard the green light on the Fn key will briefly flicker. Also if you press the power button and then immediately hit the windows button on the bottom of the tablet it will vibrate a bit, but in both cases the screen does not turn on.
After continuously hitting the power button for ~5-10 minutes the screen will eventually turn on.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
    Thanks,
    Brandon

For the past week, I've been using the Helix and just shutting it down every time I walk away from it. This morning I put it in sleep mode walked away for an hour or so and when I went to wake it up, by pressing the power button, the green light on the Fn key flashed but it would not wake up. I held the power button down for 4 seconds to do a hard reboot. I checked the system log, and when the computer was "asleep" the following warnings were recorded:

    Thanks!

  • IPhone 1.1.4 will not wake from sleep mode

    Hi all,
I have an iPhone with 1.1.4 firmware. The problem that I have is that the phone will not wake from sleep mode by pressing the "home" button. I have to press both the "home" and "sleep/power" buttons and hold them for 6 seconds for the phone to restart. I did restore the phone twice - did not solve the problem. Then, one day, I left it charging for about 3 days and when I came back it started working fine. Not for long though( After about a week of normal usage the wake up problem came back. I don't know what to do. I don't think it's the software problem, since I did complete restoration 2 times.
If the phone is connected to a charger or computer - it wakes up fine.
    Thanks, Gene K

    rimini,
When you've restored the iPhone, have you tried setting it up as a new phone? This would truly eliminate software as a possibility.
If setting it up as a new phone doesn't correct the issue, it's probably time for service: apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/
    Hope this helps,

  • Battery wakes from sleep mode

I have a user who's laptop wakes from sleep mode while the laptop is closed. We changed the battery, checked all settings for sleep mode (wake on LAN, etc) and it still wakes up while the lid is closed. Also, the laptop gets really hot on the left-hand side by the fans, below the screen.
Any other suggestions of what it could be? I'm not sure where else to go.
    Thanks!

    Hi again, itjedi
I did some research and found that there are some driver updates available for the machine that may be of some assistance. I would definitely make sure the BIOS gets updated, but the others may help as well. All of them can be found here, and the results can be filtered by OS and device type if you'd like.
Best of luck. Let me know how it goes

  • Snow Leopard - Latency issues when waking from sleep

I own two macs ('09 mini and unibody macbook), both of which connect wirelessly to an airport extreme N router. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have been dealing with terrible latency issues when the computers wake from sleep. Ping times from local servers increase from around 23ms to 220ms and webpages load slowly. A quick reboot solves the issue. Connecting directly to the airport extreme with a patch cable also solves the latency issue so I know it's just with wireless.
Has anyone else experienced this problem since upgrading and, if so, what are you doing to solve the issue?

I use Ethernet so I cannot comment but have you tried trashing the airport pref.plist and removed the preferred networks in the network set up in System Preferences and then set up the wifi connection again?
This seems to help with a lot of airport problems on this forum.

  • MacBook won't automatically wake from sleep after flipping computer open.

The only way my computer both goes to sleep and wakes from sleep is by clicking on the Apple icon and putting it to sleep before closing the lid and by pressing the power button after opening the lid. If I just close the lid without first clicking on "Sleep" under the Apple icon, the computer will continue to run and the Apple on the lid will continue to be lit while the sleep indicator light does not go on. If I just open the lid and do not press the power button, the screen will continue to be black and the sleep indicator light continues to glow. I'm not sure if I reset a system preference or something by mistake, but is there a way to fix this? Or is this an indication of a bigger problem?
Additionally, when my computer is asleep and I unplug my charging iPod, it wakes from sleep (the sleep indicator light goes black while the Apple on the back of the screen lights up). Is this an indication of a bigger problem?
My computer is only about 7 months old, so I am a bit worried if it is starting to show wear and tear already. Thank you for your help!

    You're welcome to the Forums.
Go to System Preferences>Energy Saver, and set a time for your System to sleep.
Set both sliders to 10 or 15mins to nod off, when Inactive.
It's never a good idea to plug in or out, while the Computer is sleeping. If someone pokes at your ear while you're sleeping, you'll wake up too.

  • Ibook won't wake from sleep mode

I have an ibook G4. I have a slid show for a screen saver, and the display is set to sleep when the computer is inactive for 15 minutes. Recently the computer does not wake from sleep. It is stuck on a screen saver picture, and does not wake up when i press a key. The only way to access the computer is to shut it down by pressing the Start button.
I have tried to remove the slide show, but no difference.

I would suggest resetting the PMU. Since the PMU has control over sleeping and waking, resetting it may help.
Every time you have to do a forced shutdown (by pushing the start button) instead of a normal one, there is a chance of hard drive damage and you should repair the hard drive, either by booting into Safe Mode or starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key at the end of the startup chime. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or Utilities > Disk Utility (in Tiger) and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive. Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on your hard drive.
For future reference, you may want to try posting in the iBook G4 Forum with questions.
You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum.

i've been having random issues with waking my mac pro os x 10.6.8 from sleep mode via apple bluetooth mouse and keyboard. this issue only happens occasionally (1-2 times per month) with no real pattern that is evident. the only way to wake the computer during this type of event is to turn it off and restart. any thoughts?

  • Boot Problem! Slow start up, shut down and wake from sleep mode.

I have a MBP late 2009. I used it a long time whit Snow Leopard, few month ago i did an upgrade to Mavericks.
To start up it takes 30-40 seconds until appear the apple logo. Then 2 minutes more to start up the sistem.
When I wake the machine from sleep mode it takes 40 seconds to be working.
    Shut down 40 seconds.
Even sometime it get frezze using only Safari.
    Things I have tried:
    Reinstall Snow Leopard (clean install)
    Install Mavericks (clean install)
    Replace the HD
    ¿Any idea?
    Sorry for mi poor English

    Chepoka,
have you ensured that all of your installed software is compatible with Mavericks?
If you boot into Safe mode, does it still take 40 seconds to awaken from sleeping, or to shut down? (It will take longer to start up in Safe mode because it will perform “sanity checks” on your boot disk.)
If you have a bootable external disk with Mavericks installed, use Startup Manager to boot from the external disk. Does it take just as long to boot, awaken from sleep, and shut down from the external disk as it does from the internal disk?
