Software Base Station and Tiger

I have a mac with an internet connection which I can share with other macs via airport using the sharing control panel. fine.
However what i want is this:
internet connention -- mac -- airport express -- computer
ie I want to share the internet connection via airport to an airport express and thence to an other computer (that doesnt have a wireless card) linked to the airport express via ethernet cable.
Is this possible? I have tried but there appears to be a problem as you need to have the Mac sharing the intenet connection via airport whilst the airport iexpress is being set up. May I am attempting the impossible. Any tips?
thanks

However, when the AE is set to join an existing
network I found the the tab relating to ethernet is
all greyed out and there is a message kindly
informing me that the ethernet port is disabled when
the AE joins an existing network.
Any work around? or impossible?
Impossible.
In order for the ethernet port to be active, you need to be using WDS, this is not possible with a mac created software base station.
You either need another Airport base station or a wireless adapter for the other computer.

  • Airport Express Base Station and AirTunes

I was given an Airport Express Base Station and I purchased
a PCMCIA wireless card (802.11g). After installation of both items I then upgraded the iTunes software to v4.9. I want to transmit music from my laptop to the Airport Express Base Station. I understand I require the AirTunes software butI cannot find a download site for that application. The CD that came with the Base Station does not have Airtunes (obviously an older version of the application software). Is AirTunes available as a download?
    Thanks

Airtunes support is built in to iTunes version 4.9 - there is no other software you need to download or install. If your PC has been successfully set up to connect to the Airport Express wireless network, a drop down box will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes application window where you can select the place your iTunes should be playing (ie internal speakers, or the Airport Express).
You did not mention either (a) configuring your Airport Express or (b) setting up your PC to connect to the Airport Express wireless network. To do this:
    (a) read the configuration manual for the Airport Express. Then download the Airport 4.2 update for Windows (from Apple's web site) - it provides the latest Windows versions of the Airport Express configuration software.
    (b) to get your PC to connect to the Airport Express wireless network, see the links to "accessing an airport network" provided at:

  • Dial up account setting issue with graphite base station and ibook

hello, I have spent hours and hours researching this issue. I cannot connect to the internet using my graphite base station and ibook. It seems to be a settings/configuration issue for my dial up account. what settings do I use? which account do I choose? Same as modem settings? is there a conflict somewhere? The airport card was checked at the apple genius bar, it's ok. How do i configure the base station? Thanks. What's with the paper clip deal? Is orange or green the preferred color?

Anyway, how do you change the modem settings on the airport.
You need to administer the Graphite using AirPort Admin Utility. To do so with a computer running Mac OS X 10.4, you should use AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5. First, join the computer to the Graphite's wireless network. Then, launch the utility, select the Graphite on the opening screen, click "Configure," and enter the Graphite's base station password. (Note: the base station password is not the same thing as your wireless network password and is also not the same thing as your dial-up account password.) The dial-up modem settings are found in the "Internet" pane of AirPort Admin Utility. In the "Connect Using" pop-up menu, select "Modem (V.90)" if your Internet Service Provider ("ISP") supplies a telephone number that is compatible with the V.90 protocol. The actual settings to enter (the dial-up telephone number of your ISP; your ISP account name and password; and (if necessary) DNS server addresses and/or domain name) are those specified by your ISP.
Does this affect the dial up internal modem settings?
No. The internal modem settings and the AirPort settings on your computer are found in different portions of the Network pane of System Preferences. The computer connects to the base station via AirPort, regardless of how the base station connects to the Internet.
The internal modem settings on the computer, if they work, may be useful as a reference. The account name and other settings to use in the "Internet" tab of AirPort Admin Utility are the same ones that you would use on your computer if your computer were connecting to the Internet using its internal modem.
What's with the paper clip deal?
A paper clip is used if you need to reset the base station. See step 4 of Article HT2439 -- Resetting the AirPort Base Station (Graphite). (Note: the references in this article to AirPort Setup Assistant are out of date. You must instead use AirPort Admin Utility to reconfigure the base station, as well as to reinstall base station software, if you reset the base station.)
Is orange or green the preferred color?
Green. See Article TA25946 -- AirPort Base Station (Graphite): LED Behavior.

  • Airport extreme base station and mac mini

I heard so many good things about the airport base station and decided to replace my lynx router with it , but I have had considerable problems. First, I found the base station only has 2 ports, the assumption is that it will be connected to a pc and all the other computers will be wireless. The mac mini I have came with no wireless device although the g4 I have goes. I asked tec support if I could an airport express card to the mini and supprisingly they didn't recommend it. To get around the problem I purchased the airport express with i tunes, it was my understanding this device allowed you to connect any eihernet device to a wirless airport extreme connection. But , its not working. I seem to have entered the wrong settings into the pc side and the mac mini side appears to be unrecognized by the mac min software or the base station software on the pc. Neither of these products are in expensive and I wonder if I made a major mistake. The Lynx is much easier and I can always go back to that , but I really don't want to. I would appreciate any positive answers to this problem.

The use the assistant to configure (from your existing wireless network) the Airport Express to join and extend your existing wireless network.
This will configure the AX as a WDS node, which enables the ethernet port.

  • Software Base Station

For several years, I have used my old slot-loading iMac (OS 9.2.2) with an installed Airport card as a software base station to communicate with my iBook running OS 10.2.x.
Fast forward to this week, and I have finally puchased a new iMac G5 running OS 10.4. Can I use this grand new machine as a software base station? If so, does anyone have the set-up details??

See Apple's instructions at Sharing your Internet connection.
Note that you need to enable "Personal Web Sharing" on the G5 in order to allow sharing computers to web browse on the internet. If sharing computers need access to other web resources like email, you need to either disable the entire firewall on the G5 or open the appropriate ports in its firewall.
As Duane also suggested - get yourself an inexpensive wireless router at your local computer shop. It would provide far better security than the G5 software base station - both a more secure connection to the internet, and a far more secure wireless connection.

  • Time Machine is base station and trying to configure two airport express

I have a time capsule as my base station and am trying to re-connect my (2) airport express devices as additional wireless sources. The (3) used to work in harmony, now the two airport express just flash amber and I can't reconnect. Can anyone help - i have read support documentation, but just can't seem to get the 2 to sync with the time capsule base station. Many thanks

    Guys,
I agree with Don. This was my experience, and a brief description of my network... hope it helps.
The network has the following: ADSL Router... attached via ethernet to Airport with antenna. At this location is also an AE. Another Aiport with Antenna, that then has a Cisco Linksys WRT 54G. For reference, I use a PC and Laptop at the AE end and various Mac's at the other.
So to the point... I added the Linksys just before the AE. It took three days. There is an awful lot about the Linksys on the net, and for me..... which is not a suggestion, I added extra firmware. Either way, using Safari, I manually set up the router. There are about five pages that I found important..... I may be missing some, basically the DHCP on mine needed to be switched off. Once it recognised the rest of the network, via manual IP address and using a unique name, for a while I had both networks working side by side, .... because of where it was I didn't need to setup any of the ADSL modem side (its effectively a WDS relat base station in Airport terms) but that page is straight forward. Good idea to have it password protected and to change the IP, apparently. Anyway, the AE took longer to get working, and I believe that this was the result of a closely added firmware update as well.... ie, it took me about 4 times to get it to accept the update completely, and that had to be done with it attached via ethernet. The basic setup of this was straight forward after that just using the software.
    Hope this helps.

  • Since latest update to airport extreme im getting 10 unknown base station and time capsule items showing in airport utility as a network.  when able to "forget" them they initially drop off but soon return. how do i get them deleted and stay that way

since latest update to airport extreme im getting 10 unknown base stations and time caps showing up as though they are a part of my network. sometimes i can "forget" them and they will disappear initially but soon return. i need and want only my connection inside my home . any ideas. i have done a factory reset and set up a new network but they continue to show up.

I'm not convinced that the problem lies in Airport Utility. This same thing was happening to me, nearly exactly as you describe it. The thing is that with me, the problems clearly started when I updated the firmware in my Airport Express (n). That's when all the wacky stuff started happening. Sometimes it would show up in AU, sometimes it didn't and even if it didn't, I could still access the internet through it.
But as you said, the problems got really bad when another Express (b/g) was put on the network with it. Even when it did work, the (b/g) would make it impossibly slow.
You know more about this than me, and clearly have more patience if you've restarted the network fifty times. I gave up at about ten.
In any case, your solution is more of a work around and if you're still having that slow connection problem, I'm not sure you've got it. But thanks for your reporting of this. At least I know I'm not crazy.

  • My internet works fine with my wired cable modem, but when i connect to my extreme base station and setup my wireless network the internet no longer works and my apple tv by default

my cable modem works fine, but when I hook it up to my extreme base station and run through the prompts and set up my wireless network it doesnt work and neither does my apple tv by default. I am unsure how to correct this problem. It will come up saying that I dont have an IP address when I have it set to DCHP so I dont know what the problem is.

Push the reset button on the modem and power the modem off
Power off everything else....all devices....order is not important
    Wait 15-20 minutes or longer
Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the AirPort Extreme
Power up the modem and let it run for 5 minutes by itself
Power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run for 5 minutes
Power up each other device one at a time a few minutes apart
    Check the network

  • Airport Extreme Base Station and 2wire Modem / Router

I have Yahoo DSL with a 2wire modem / wireless router combo. I have an iMac and a MacBook both running Leopard. I can't seem to get the Back to my Mac feature to work. I'm currently running the trial version of .Mac. I'd like to get a full .Mac account but I want to be sure I can utilize the Back to my Mac feature. If I were to bridge an Airport Extreme Base Station to the 2wire would that solve my issue with Back to my Mac. Additionally I like the idea of being able to plug a printer of external hard drive into the Airport Extreme.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I got it to work. I purchased the Airport Extreme Base Station and took the following steps which I found here http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-68141.html
First connect directly to the 2Wire with the Ethernet cable.
    Instructions from 2Wire:
    1. Clear the HomePortal to Factory State –can be accomplished two ways
    2. Go to http://homeportal/management
    3. Click on Resets
    4. Click on Reset to Factory State
    5. Click Continue
    6. Have customer press Hardware Reset button with paperclip (HG products only and BellSouth HWs)
    7. Have customer unbend a paperclip
    8. Have customer insert paperclip into recess for Hardware Reset button (outlined with Red circle) on back of HomePortal.
    9. Hold paper clip in for ten (10) full seconds
    Next steps:
    1. Go to http://homeportal/management again
    2. Click on Configure under Broadband Link
    3. Enter VPI 0 and VCI 35
    4. Click on Disable PVC Search
    5. Set Connection Type to Direct IP
    6. Click Submit/Save
    7. Have cu go to http://homeportal/management
    8. Click on Configure Services
    9. Have cu Uncheck Enable Routing
    10. Click Submit
    Airport configuration:
    1. Open the AirPort Admin Utility and select your Base Station.
    2. Click Configure and enter your password.
    3. Click the Internet tab.
    4. Choose PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) from the Connect using pop-up menu.
    5. If required by your ISP, enter your user name, password and service name in the appropriate fields. ( Your name and password is you full email including the @sbcglobal.net part and your email password)
    6. Click Update.
    7. After the base station restarts itself, quit the AirPort Admin Utility.
If that doesn’t work call apple and they should be able to help with the airport configuration.
Back to My Mac now works. Hope this helps someone else.

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.
