Software Update Checks for Updates at Start Up Even When Off

I had problems with Software Update struggling to updating my Macbook's firmware (I solved it by updating the firmware outside of Software Update with Installer), I am now having problems with Software Update.
Software Update checks for updates everytime I start up my computer - even when I have Software Update checks turned off in System Preferences. Is there a way to correct this?

I, too, am having this same problem. However, I'll need a little patience from everyone. The last Mac I used was an SE30 and now about 15-18 years later I have 3 PC desktops and 3 PC laptops in my house. But... I'm exploring getting back to Mac and have a MacBook Pro that's exactly 10 days old. No problems until 2 days ago and now every time I boot, the little software update icon is bouncing on my Dock. It searches and then tells me there are no updates to install. Pretty annoying having it do this every start up. I've checked apple>system preferences>software update and unchecked it (so that it should be off). Still shows up on next boot.
So, I tried to follow your suggestion about top level HD > preferences, but haven't quite figured out the Mac OS enough to know where these preferences are that you're directing me to. Could you possibly be a bit more granular for this Mac novice?
Thanks a ton. These little system annoyances are why I've decided to try and break the PC grip on my life and it's a little disappointing to already have one on my mac. At least on the PC I know how to get rid of these things, but I'm still learning this Mac stuff.
Thanks again,
E

  • Software Update - Checking for Updates

    Hi,
I've just got my PlayBook and I've followed every step, but now I'm stuck. After plugging it in, setting up the wi-fi, logging in with my Blackberry ID, downloading and installing the updates and restarting the PlayBook I'm stuck on the same screen... For over an hour now. All it says is: "Software Update - Checking for Updates"
    Can anyone help? Please?

Try the three button reset. Hold down Power Button, plus both volume buttons at the same time for 15 seconds. Release and wait one minute. Then hold down the power button only until the red light flashes on (about 4 seconds) , release and wait for the PB to reboot.

  • ITunes 8.1 Software Application  - Check for Updates Freezes Up

Ok, I updated to 8.1 iTunes and everything seems to have installed fine, however, whenever I go into my Applications folder and click on "Check for Updates" at the bottom right of the window, iTunes 8.1 freezes up. If I Ctrl-Alt-Del and look as the running process, it shows iTunes to "Not be Responding" upon which the only way to get out of it is to force quit the application.
    Anyone else experience this?

Well, now it's crashing after launching. Very similar to the ones that has been posted here and several people are now having the same problem.
I see that you can shut genius bar and it fixed it for some, however, like others, I don't think I have enough time to disable Genius before it crashse.

  • Blackberry Z10 stuck on 'Checking for updates'

I got the Z10 this morning, I followed the start up bits and it told me to connect to the wifi so I connected it to my home WIFI. It went trough the installations then it's gone to a screen which says "Checking for updates" and a wheel spinning round and round. It's been like this for 20+ minutes now. I took SIM out just in case as I was unsure how to activate my SIM. Even with SIM removed, this happens and it stays on the checkingfor updates page. When SIM is inserted, it's still the same.
It came up with "cannot connect to APN..." with some other information a few moments ago. I've removed the battery while device was on, and put the battery back in. Now it's still on the "Software update, checking for updates" page and I have no idea how to connect to my wifi.

Ok then I recommend reinstalling the OS with an autoloader, info on where to get them and how to do it can be found here...

  • Checking for updates after System Restore

After installing updates in September I had several problems, but system restore got things working again.  However, when I check for updates now the system appears to see the updates that were removed by system restore as if they are still installed or, as if they are available on the machine and therefore not needed.  I thought system update checked for updates based on current machine status.
Would system restore typically leave updates on the machine such that an update check may see them as not needed?
Is there a way to change settings or reset the update catalog to check for updates NOT currently installed?
    Thanks - John

    Hi,
I have not delved deep enough to say which item actually holds the list of active Chats or Conversations in the side bar.
The chat.db item itself is the one that hold the "history" that shows up when your start a chat with someone you have chatted to before in iMessages.
You need to have Saved Chats  in the Archive folder for this to work with AIM, Jabber, Yahoo and Bonjour Buddies.
Apple's own documentation tends to refer to iMessages as Conversations and any other account as Chats.
The exception now being SMS/text which the app Links to iMessages.
If you just Restore the whole computer to the last day you ran OS X 10.10.1 then it should have all the Chats/Conversations you were having that day.
However changing them by effectively Importing the newer ones (those up to the last time you used OS X 10.10.3beta) will upset things.

  • Disable "check for updates" iTunes AND allow update iPad iPhone

In an enterprise environment we followed http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2102 to disable the "check for updates" in iTunes, although this is preventing users from updating thier iPad and iPhone devices as well.
How would we manage the Windows computer software (disable check for updates) but allow users to manage (update) thier own portable devices that require iTunes to update?

No.  For now we have decided to perform the default install for our users with specific instructions not to update when Apple informs them of an update.  When they see the pop up notification of an Apple update, they are to open the SCCM (SMS) "Run Advertised Programs" where we have packaged the new version to install with Admin rights.

  • I can't update my ipod. When I check for updates it says "can't connect to server"(despite internet connection being fine). Also, when I try and update software it starts then stops after 2 seconds

I can't update my Ipod. When I check for updates it says "can't connect to server" despite internet connection being fine. When I receive a software update message;I say install and it starts updating then stops after 2 seconds. Help! (It is a 3rd gen IPod touch(I think)). Presumably as a result of this, I have tried to put my library onto my gf's new iPod touch and it just charges it..doesn't download my library onto the touch).

    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

    Hi
A little information will be of a great help, witch iPhone did you upgrade, memory , and version of software ( iOS 8.x.x )?
Try restarting you iPhone and make sure you have a god internet connection , get as close to your wifi router (1-3 meter / 2-9 feet ) as possible. Don't use restore to factory  settings before you tried other options .  And most imported du you have an iCloud backup.

  • HT4623 please help i cant get my software upgrade for ios 7 there is a one in the software upgrade box but all it says is checking for updates

cannot up date software to ios 7 so i can get certain apps all it does is say checking for updates

    Here are some options:
    1. turn off your device completely for at least 30 sec
connect your device to your computer
update using iTunes in your computer.
    2. If the first option fails, try resetting first the settings (setting>general>reset>reset all settings). Once done click on settings>general>software update

  • What is the Firefox start page looking for when it tells me I'm not using the most current version and need to update Firefox? The check for updates button says my version is up to date, but the start page disagrees. Is there a setting I need to adjust?

Okay: My start page is the one Google provides: http://www.google.ca/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official and frequently it has a note underneath the search box that "You're not on the latest version of Firefox. Upgrade today to get the best of the Web!" But when I check for updates on the About Firefox window, it says my Firefox is up to date. So what is the start page looking for? Is there some setting I need to adjust? Or is this a Google marketing ploy to get me to switch to Chrome?

I tentatively think I have the solution; this is for when the session id value 'thing', in about:config, referred to in other answers is already on the default/rest state.
I am assuming, I don't what to imply certainty in-case there is a value wrong in our browsers, that the problem stems from the fact that our homepage is no longer the default for Firefox.
So, go to 'Options'>'General' and delete the homepage. This will reset it to the new address, which is 'about:home'.
I hope this helps some people.

  • HT1338 when I click on software update it says ''An error occurred while checking for updates.'' Why does it say that?

So I bought a Powerbook G4 from a pawn shop and yes, I did check to see if it was still good. everything works fine but I need an update because I have OS X 10.3. So I connect to the internet and then I click on ''Software Update'' and I wait. But then a message opens saying ''An error occurred while checking for updates'' And I don't know why. HELP!!!

Something temporarily wrong with your internet connection?
Be aware that this is a very large file to download, it needs a strong consistent internet connection.
Have the iPhone on the charger cable too.
In the meantime read the threads in this forum about the visibility item and some other possible issues on the 4 and 4S (although a large number of people have these issues, it is still a minor percentage, but anyhow, be aware).

  • "software update"  "An error occurred while checking for updates"

When I click on "Software Update", an error results, "An error occurred while checking for updates".  It is definitely connected to the internet.  I was gifted a G5 and I installed a new hard drive and loaded the OS, OS X 10.3.5.  That version of Safari does not display pages correctly.  E.g., support.apple.com/downloads just clocks on the righthand side of the page.
Because cannot access that link, cannot manually update the OS - I was thinking this version is "old" and as a result, unable to connect to apple's update server.  Thanks.

Thanks,  I upgraded with your info.
Ultimately, I am trying to access mail.google.com but receiving  the following error with opera v9.5.x: Some important features may not work in this version of your browser, so you have been redirected to the Basic HTML version.
Safari gives the following: Some important features may not work in this version of your browser, so you have been redirected to the Basic HTML version.
I can access ask.com and using opera to type this response.
