Solaris 10 u5 Samba slow transfer rates?

Hi!
I've installed Solaris 10 x86 (Core2Duo - x64) server, with Samba over ZFS RAID-Z. Samba is a part of Active Directory Domain. I've managed to join it to domain, to get the users and groups from A.D. and to translate them to Unix IDs. Everything works really good. Samba is installed from the packages from Solaris 10 DVD.
Only problem I have is the performance :( It's disastrous!
On 100Mbit Realtek NIC, Samba can manage around 4 MB/s if log level is set to very high (10). If I lower it to 0, then transfer rates go up to 7.5-8.5MB/s and they fluctuate in that interval.
On the same network, there is a Debian Samba server, and transfer rates go high as 10.5-11.0MB/s.
Next test I did was switching to Gbit interface. That increased transfer rates up to 25 MB/s, but that is still 5 times slower than the theoretical limit.
So, next thing I've tried was to switch to Blastwave (CSW) Samba instead of SUNW Samba.... My transfer rates went back to normal immediately! It was a bit of shock for me... I could transfer about 10MB/s on 100Mbit interface, and around 45MB/s on 1Gbit interface. 45MB/s is theoretically limit of the workstation hard drive I was doing transfers from.
Sun packaged (SUNW) Samba is 3.0.28 patched today to the latest patchlevel, and CSW uses 3.0.23. I used CSW Samba with the exact same smb.conf file. Only problem is - I never managed to connect CSW samba to ADS on my network :( So I gave up on that, and I'm facing a dilemma. Managers request full speed of the Samba server (comparable to Linux/Windows shares), but I just can't connect to Domain with CSW package.
So I'm asking you guys - any ideas what could be the problem with SUNW Samba and performance? Is it just the 3.0.28 vs 3.0.23 issue, or what? Why is there so big difference in transfer rates? :(

Slow Transfer Rate Between iTunes and iPhone 3GS

Hi,
My iTunes recently failed to recognise my iPhone 3GS and suggested a restore followed by a back up.
I followed the steps and after a short while it started to transfer from iTunes library back onto my iPhone. However, the rate of song transfer appears to be very slow. 3,000 songs in 10 hours, there is still 1,800 to go.
Is there anything I can check to speed to process up, I don't remember it being this slow when I first got the iPhone?

I'm having the same problem with very slow transfer and it's even more mystifying.
I got a 3GS a while ago and always very impressed by its transfer rates (300mb video file syncs in about 30 seconds). My partner also got a 3GS last week, but I noticed when setting it up that it was very slow (did some tests - the same 300mb file takes about 6 minutes to transfer). Since I was syncing to the same itunes library, on the same computer, using the same cables, I assumed it was something wrong with the new phone. Tried restore couple of times but no change, so I took it to the local genius bar who checked it, couldn't find anything wrong with it and swapped it out.
The only thing they suggested that I hadn't tried was reinstall iTunes - never occurred to me as my original phone still syncs at normal speed. So I've now reinstalled iTunes, (having deleted the new phone's backups) plugged in the new phone and asked it to sync using my original (fast phone) back up, but it still runs at the slow transfer rate even though this is a new phone! Tried restore again and still no change.
This is very frustrating. My original phone still syncs very fast. Getting the phone swapped means that it is unlikely to be a hardware fault with the new phone but it seems no matter what I do (delete the new phone's backups, sync to my normal phone's backup, install as a new phone, reinstall itunes) it still transfers at about 1/12 the speed of my original.
I'm completely stumped and would welcome any suggestions as to what I could try next.

Slow transfer rate to time capsule - 2nd generation - mb pro 5ghz

have time capsule with dual networks, macbook pro with n enabled connected to 5ghz network with full bars, yet while copying files to the time capsule, it seems slow

about 7 min to copy a 744mb file to time capsule (according to finder)
time capsule connected via ethernet to 2wire 2701hg modem + wireless router ( wireless turned off )

Hi,
In the Manual Setup->Advanced->Logs and Statistics page of Airport Utility you'll find information on wireless signal quality for each client connected. Primarily, signal quality will determine the connection speed of your file transfers, the best you can do to improve things is to find a wireless channel with the least interference, Manual Setup->Wireless.
My Macbook Air connection is showing -66 Signal, -89 Noise, 122 Rate which gives me a wireless file transfer rate in bursts from 500kbps to 22Mbps. Time Capsule is not the fastest combo device, even file transfers over LAN Ethernet are around 50% slower than a regular Airport Extreme and I've found transfers to the disk from a GigE connected Mac Pro top out at around 60Mbps.
The Time Capsule is more useful as a convenience tool than speed I think so just be patient.

When the disc is not mounted, it seems to function normally - it's blue indicator light is consistently on and it sounds right. However, when I mount the disc and begin using it - in this instance to transfer files, it goes extremely slow. The blue light will mostly remain off, then interminnently flash on and onscreen a small amount of data will move.
Through disk utility I was able to successfully verify and repair the disc, but it's still behaving this way. Can anyone help? SOS!

Hanging iMac, slow transfer rates

I'm experiencing two problems with my iMac which I think are probably linked as they began around the same time. I've scoured these forums and several other websites for answers but I haven't found many people whose problems sound exactly like mine.
My iMac was running Tiger up until around a year and a half ago. I then upgraded to Leopard without any issues, and everything ran smoothly. About a year ago I began to experience some strange behaviour - Flash would repeatedly crash, my mouse seemed unresponsive, and the system began to hang as though it was having trouble processing things. I reinstalled Leopard and things seemed ok, though the hanging remained (at this stage it was just the umbrella spinning and things taking longer to load). I upgraded to Snow Leopard hoping this would fix the issue when it came out and things got incredibly bad. Starting up and loading to the desktop took upwards of twenty minutes!! Doing ANYTHING seemed to be a massive strain on the system. I'd literally have to spend an hour or so monitoring it just to check my email and shut down in the correct way. Additionally the USB transfer speed, and download speed, had dropped to the point where a 20mb file had an estimated time of 2 hours to or transfer from my external hard drive. Internet downloads were similar.
After as many tests as I could manage I thought it might be RAM related, and upgraded to 3gig. It had no noticeable effect. Recently, whilst trying to solve the problem, I gritted my teeth and backed everything up. I wiped the system entirely, and tried a clean install of Leopard (the last functioning OS I had). It worked, in so far as the catastrophically slow behaviour stopped, but I'm STILL left with the slow transfer speeds, and the hanging. I've since re-upgraded to Snow Leopard, and this time it functions in the exact same way as Leopard.
To describe the problem in detail: Every few seconds - the time between varies from 2s - a minute - the system stops responding for a seemingly arbitrary amount of time. Often the umbrella appears. However, when it appears frozen the dock usually responds without any issues (though is entirely impotent as I can't open anything, including Finder) and if I'm typing then when it returns to my control anything I typed will usually appear. My USB transfer rates remain, even when there's no issue, extremely low. Same with downloads. The most bizarre thing for me is that during the times the system is responding (during which is can often manage multiple tasks without any complaint) it moves and respons in an incredibly speedy, efficient way - as though the RAM upgrade has really helped.
I've tried repairing disk permissions, checking activity monitor to see what may be a strain on the system (everything looks entirely normal), I've run several diagnostics (including tests on the new RAM and the old RAM and on the external hard drives), defragged, turned out absolutely EVERYTHING unnecessary... Nothing I do seems to have any effect on this behaviour! Does anyone have ANY ideas? It's going to be a real pain to get it to an Apple store.
Edit: The reinstallation of an OS, or wiping of the hard drive took between 18 and 24 hours a time, despite it usually showing a countdown from 30 minutes the whole time.

Have you tried booting from the Snow Leopard disk, running Disk Utility and checking the startup disk for errors? If not...
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space
If the startup disk appears to be ok and there's enough free disk space, try running the Apple Hardware Test
If the AHT doesn't report any problems...
experience some strange behaviour - Flash would repeatedly crash
Try uninstalling the reinstalling a new copy of flash then repair disk permissions.

Slow Transfer Rate

I have a home network running on a Linksys WAG320n and i have attached to it a WD MyBookLive (w Gigabit Ethernet). I am connected on the network via my Dell with a Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300 AGN. I am not able though to connect on N range. I have installed the latest drivers from Intel but nothing changed. When i try to copy a file from my computer to the WD Network drive the transfer rates are very slow. I get Max 2MB/s - 3MB/s while if i connect my computer with a wire the speed goes up by 3-4 times more. I am not sure if i have to change something with my configuration or if there is something that i am missing.
Can you please help me?

Adjusting the advanced wireless settings might help boost transfer rates via wireless. Set Beacon Interval to 50, DTIM Interval to 3, Fragmentation & RTS Threshold to 2304 for both.
Wireless connections run slower compared to wired connections. Expect your wireless connection to perform half as fast as the wired ones.

I'm backing up via time machine(mac book pro) in MAC 10.7.4 which has a wireless N card.
in Utilities (activity monitor)I'm only getting 9 megabytes per second , why is it so slow? I feel like it's taking forever. e3200 says it does up to 300 megabytes per second. any possible settings causing this?
a backup of 202 gigs has been running for about 4 hours and still going

The 300 megabits per a second claim is also dependent on the wireless interference around your area and the maximum link speed that the macbook pro's wireless chip can handle.
First, I would suggest visiting the wireless tab in the router's online interface and change the channel width to auto. That will allow the router to increase it's maximum speed to 300mbps if there isn't too much wireless interference.
After that, you can check the macbook's wireless link speed. Keep in mind that the usable speed (throughput) is usually around half of the link speed. That's just how 802.11abgn works.
I'm sure that if you tried a wired connection to the router, you would experience faster transfer rates compared to using a wireless connection.

Slow transfer rate Music from iTune to iPhone

Hello,
I am brand new user of iPhone. I am transferring some of my songs from iTune to iPhone but the transfer rate seems slow. I have a iPod Nano and compare to that iPhone transfer rate is way slower than my Nano.
For example, the song
"break on through (to the other side)[Remix]" by The Doors,
which is 7:07 long and 6.7MB in file size, took 10 seconds to transfer
The same song took only 2.3 seconds on my Nano.
Does this make sense? Or is there a problem?

I'm not positive, but I believe the 3rd generation iPod syncs via firewire, but maybe the 3rd generation iPod supports syncing via firewire or USB.
Data transfer via firewire is much faster than data transfer via USB 1.1 or 2.0. I for one wasn't very happy about Apple no longer supporting syncing via firewire with iPods - I thought Apple did this for the Windows market only, and basically they did since many PC ugly box assemblers didn't include a firewire port and firewire didn't catch on and gain enough momentum in the market as an overall, which is a shame. Data transfer via firewire is much faster and more reliable IMO.
Anyway, are you positive you are syncing your iPod via USB and not via firewire?

Slowed transfer rate on ipod shuffle

Hello all. For some reason my 2nd gen shuffle transfer rate has slowed down. When I drag songs onto it I get a "waiting for ipod" message and progress bar for a few seconds before the songs begin to transfer. Songs used to begin transferring immediately, but now I get this window every single time. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

I tried resetting it several times and this actually is what caused the trouble. Resetting/restoring...etc disables the shuffle's disc-use option which, when enabled, vastly increases transfer rates. Of course, you have to manually eject it, but that seems a small price to pay. Let me know if this does the trick for you. Take care.

Slow transfer rate between external hard disk and TC

Hi all,
Yesterday I installed a new 1TB TC and attached to it an external LaCie 500 GB HD and a printer (HP 3325) via a USB hub to it. The thing is that although the transfer from the LaCie to my Mac is smooth via wifi, I can't say the same about the data transfer rate between my LaCie and the TC. Whilst they are connceted via USB, it seems that the speed is just half that from the LaCie to my Mac.
Any of you have faced the same problem or know why that is happening?

Ramon, Welcome to the discussion area!
You have to remember that the data is not simply going through the USB port from the hard drive to the Time Capsule.
The data is actually going from the hard drive to your Mac (through the Time Capsule) and then from your Mac to the Time Capsule. Therefore it is causing twice as much traffic as a simple transfer between your Mac and the Time Capsule.

Slow transfer rate over wireless

Hi. My transfer rate (of local files) is really poor over wireless, like 500mb is taking 2 hours. Here is my setup... Powerbook to billion router (via wireless), billion to PC via ethernet cable, second ethernet card on pc to cable modem. I used to have this all hardwired (powerbook to PC by ethernet) but recently introduced the router so I can work in another room. My wireless signal is always strong and doesn't seem to be dropping. If I download a file from the internet its ok, i'm averaging 900kb/s so the data transfer doesn't seem to be dropping or lagging when routing through from the internet. The problem seems to be with local transfers to my mac from the PC drive and the external USB drive connected to the PC. Its just weird that internet throughput is ok. Does anyone have any ideas? i've got some more info. I got a wireless card for the pc and connected via my airport card so i'm no longer using the router. I'm still getting the same thing - internet traffic ok on pc and mac via the pc, but file transfers locking between the two machines. I started thinking the disk on the pc might be damaged but the pc tansfers fine to the USB hard drive attached to it. Transfers are still locking up between usb drive and mac. its really weird. I've eliminated hardware such as the router, disks, and comms in the sense of internet throughput is ok. i've also formatted the pc and reinstalled xp so should I now be looking at config of xp or mac? thanks

Slow transfer rate between wired computer

im using WRT54G.
the problem is when im transferring data between my wired PC,
the transfer rate is capped to 10MB/s,
while im quiet sure that both of my ethrenet adapter is able to transfer up to 100MB/s
im using firmware v7.00.4
and both of my PC is using DUMeter so that i know the pure transfer rate..

I assume you are transferring the data by wire, through the WRT54G's built in 4 port LAN switch -- is that correct?
The WRT54G has a built in 100 Mbps (Megabits per second) switch. There are 8 bits in a byte. Typically a 100 Mbps switch can transfer data at speeds up to about 92 Mbps = about 11 MBps (Megabytes per second). This is about the same speed that you reported. So it sounds like your router is working correctly.
If you need a faster transfer of wired data, you will need a gigabit switch. Some Linksys routers have built in gigabit switches. Alternatively, you can purchase a separate gigabit switch, such as the SD2008, and use a setup like this:
modem - WRT54G - SD2008 - computer 1
- computer 2
When you have a setup like this, and you transfer data from one computer to the other, the data will only flow through the SD2008 gigabit switch, not through the WRT54G. So, assuming your computers have gigabit ethernet cards, you can use your gigabit network to transfer the data. Although a gigabit network allows you to connect at 1000 Mbps, your actual data transfer speed will be limited by your computers, primarily by the hard drive speed. With newer computers, many users can achieve data transfer speeds of 20 MBps or more.

Slow transfer rate of data to remote hard drive on airport extreme base station

currently trying to transfer RAW picture files to my Seagate Go Flex Hard drive through my wireless network. Have an airport Extreme base station that the hard drive is connected to through a USB cable (3 i think could be 2.0). Taking over an hour to copy across 16 gig worth of data. Is this transfer time to be expected? Can it be quicker by altering or checking the settings in the Airport extreme base station.

Things will likely go at least twice as fast if you connect your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme.
With a wired Ethernet connection, you could normally expect between 25-30 GB of data to be transferred per hour. On average, wireless is typically 2-3 times slower than a direct Ethernet connection.
And, as you might imagine, the chances of an error occuring during a wireless backup are always higher due to possible interference.

Unbearably slow transfer rate. Any help welcome.

So I'm backing up about 139 gigs of data from one external hard drive to another. I'm copying from a Seagate 2TB drive via USB to a WD 2TB drive also connected via USB. It took one hour to copy the files to the Seagate drive, but when I start copying from the Seagate drive to the WD one, I'm told it'll take 39 hours to complete! I did the math with how fast it's actually running and I'm getting a transfer speed of one Megabyte per second! So my questions are...
What the heck is going on here?
How can I get it faster? Preferably without spending any money on other software and/or hardware.
And now for some obligatory information!
-Both hard drives use an external power source
-I'm using a Mac Pro tower with a 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor
-I have 4 GB of 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM memory
-The Seagate drive is capable of USB 3.0, but the tower only has USB 2.0 (I know it just means I'm using USB 2.0, but my point is that drive isn't just slow)
-The WD Drive is only capable of USB 2.0
-Both drives are formatted Mac OS Extender (Journaled)
-One drive is plugged into the front of the tower, the other is plugged into the back
-Currently, Activity Monitor says I'm only using 1% of my computer's processing power
-Nothing else is running (except Firefox right now, but it's still at only 1% usage)
-Three other things are using my USB ports, a keyboard, a mouse, and a printer (the printer isn't even on)
-I have one FireWire port, but the hard drives can't use FireWire anyway
-I'm backing up from a separate computer so the files are not on the tower and there is not enough room for them on the tower (I cannot copy to the tower from one drive, then copy to the second from the tower)

Replace the hard drive case surrounding the drive with a Firewire one, or insert it in the Mac Pro tower's second hard drive bay.

Please help, unbelievably SLOW transfer rate. No idea what to do.

I bought a 500GB TC to use with my recently replaced (and updated) Macbook Pro. I started the time machine back-up process around 7PM last night and I woke up this morning to find it's only backed up 3GB/89GB. Now that is completely unacceptable. I have it on my already existing wireless network and all I'm really using it for is the HDD.
Now I'm not too familiar external HDD with this setup but I used to own a Western Digital 500GB HDD and it would have backed up twice by now.
It is backing up via wireless as we speak and still running terribly slow.
I'm wondering if I should return it.

Thanks, since my last post in this thread, TC has wirelessly backed up 16.80GB out of the total 50GB.
I just tried the ethernet route, also TC downloaded an update a few minutes ago. I disabled Airport while enabling the ethernet connection. The Network Preferences panel had a red dot for Airport (off) and a green dot for ethernet (on), and below it, it says "Self-Addressed IP". After about 2 minutes, a notice came up saying that the connection to TC was lost, the only option was "Disconnect". At this point, TC wasn't recognized anywhere on my computer.
The only way for TC to be recognized is by turning Airport back on. Then I went to Airport Utility to try to make TC work by having no Airport connection, just ethernet. This didn't work, I got an error on the DHCP settings page and the TC flashes amber. After turning Airport back on again and trying to connect the TC via ethernet to my computer, it always brings me back to the DCHP configuration page. I don't know how to properly set that up and the options are to "Skip" or "Ignore", so I clicked ignore every time, so I didn't get far with it.
So it seems the only way for TC to work (green light) is WiFi, even though it's at a snail's pace. After setting up TC again with Airport Utility, I went into Time Machine to make it recognizable by my computer. Since I only want to backup certain files, I keep the slider of Time Machine in the off position. I then accessed the TC through its icon but there's nothing there. I dragged the files I wanted to copy into TC, thinking that it'll just restart and pick up where we left of, but unfortunately this isn't the case. I'm now backing up all 50GB worth of data again, the 16.80GB that was completed at the start of this post has been LOST!!! Argrhhh!!!
Warning, DO NOT DO WHAT I DID ABOVE!!! If you're already backing up wirelessly, let it finish before trying out other methods. So far the only option I've found is WiFi, and it's horrid that I've got to start from zero again! If you couldn't tell, I'm typing this and configuring TC at the same time.
EDIT Note: While configuring TC and sometimes when it's running, the computer experiences some slowdowns. Not sure if this is to be expected but my computer was running slow while pairing up the TC, not so bad once it's running.
