Solaris 10 x86 jumpstart patch problem

I'm trying to jumpstart and deploy the patch using the profile file(classfile). I does work well on the sparc however I seem to have an issue with x86. The line in profile file looks like this
patch patch_order nfs server1:/patch/10_x86
patch patch_order nfs server1:/patch/10_x86/10_x86_Recommended
The same directory "patch" is shared for sparc and x86 and all directory have the same permission.
Every time I jumpstart, I get this error message
Installing patches now
ERROR: Could not mount server1:/patch/10_x86 for patch install
ERROR: Could not mount server1:/patch/10_x86/10_x86_Recommended for patch install

The problem was caused by the ipfilter behavior - ignorance of interface alias. My ipnat rule was:
map aggr150031:1 ...
I have changed into:
map aggr150031 ...
and the things began to work.
Sorry for the noise.

  • Solaris X86 Jumpstart slow

    I'm trying to jumpstart a Sun x4240 and during the boot up when it runs the install-discovery script, the server goes very very slow. It will eventually move past this part, but only after many hours. The server has 4 disks, which I have setup on the raid controller as JBOD's, we are not using the RAID functions of the card at all.
    It seems the longest time is taken when running the the the script /boot/solaris/bin/create_diskmap, which is mostly this:
    /sbin/biosdev 2> /dev/null | while read diskno diskpath
    do
    devname=`/bin/ls -l /dev/rdsk/*p0 | /bin/grep $diskpath | /bin/nawk '{ print $9 }'`
    ctdname=`echo $devname | /bin/sed "s#/dev/rdsk/##" | /bin/sed "s#p0##"`
    grubdisk=`echo $diskno | /bin/sed "s/0x8//"`
    echo "$grubdisk $ctdname $diskpath" >> "$GRUBDISKMAP"
    done
    Then once it gets past this part (many hours) it hangs again around this part:
    # x86 config cleanup logic
    if [ -x /usr/sbin/install.d/atconfig ]; then
         /usr/sbin/install.d/atconfig
    fi
    Atconfig is described thusly:
    Besides ON changes there are changes needed in the
    Install consolidation. When you boot the Solaris CD/DVD,
    the atconfig binary is run that searches the disk for
    kernel/misc/sysinit file and copies this to
    /tmp/root/kernel/misc/sysinit so the
    svc_serial.c code from Suninstall can try to preserve the
    hostid during an upgrade and even an install. We need
    to modify this code to also search for /etc/hostid and preserve
    it. However, for older systems we also need to search for
    kernel/misc/sysinit for those systems that have hostid stored
    there, and convert the hostid in sysinit into a hostid in /etc/hostid.
    There was no contract between ON and Install for sysinit;
    we now have a contract in place between the two consolidations
    for Install's use of /kernel/misc/sysinit and /etc/hostid.
    The server installs fine during a normal DVD install. I'm not sure what else to do on this. If anyone has any guidance that would be great.

    Yes... I've seen and used the grub -b switches for input-device and output-device and this does change the way certain things work. However, this does not redirect input and output solely to the console, as you would, lets say, any sparc box. I start a jumpstat process, tell it to go to the console, and it hangs and waits for input from the VGA device. Right now, I have an odd interaction going on between the ILOM webgui redirection and the console. I can't login through the webgui and reboot the box through the console, nor can I hit CTRL+N to get it to boot off the network when I have the ILOM Webgui redirected to my keyboard. But when it boots off the virtual CD, or if I use the console to get into the BIOS, then and only then can I use my keyboard in the ILOM Webgui.
    There is some sort of odd interaction between the console and that stupid VGA port on the ILOM that is not explained in ILOM docs that I have read. And that is what this post is trying to figure out. When you jumpstart a sparc box, you have total control from the console. This is not the case on x86.
    Please re-read my other post before you comment on double posting. Both are about x86 jumpstart. One is about console redirection (this post). The other post is asking about getting jumpstart NOT to go through an interactive install through the -b switches. Two separate issues.

  • Solaris 10 x86 jumpstart installing from cd instead of install server

    Hi all,
    I am building a Solaris 10 x86 jumpstart server and was able to jump the client to a certain point. The jump appears to be running but for some reason stops after the first CD ( very peculiar considering the jumpstart is automated). After watching the jump, I discover that the install is using my CD to install rather than from the install server. It is, however, getting the sysidcfg info, rules and profiles from my install server. I booted from CD and then selected Custom Jumpstart to install via the network. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
    Here is my add_install_client command:
    /jumpstart/OS/Solaris_10_x86_2006-06/Solaris_10/Tools/add_install_client -s server1:/jumpstart/OS/Solaris_10_x86_2006-06 -c server1:/jumpstart -p server1:/jumpstart/Sysidcfg host1 i86pc
    Here is the output from that command:

  • Solaris 10 x86 Jumpstart and console

    How do you get Solaris 10 x86 Jumpstart to redirect it's output to the console? I have an X4500 that I'm trying to jumstart while logged into the ILOM console. Everything will crap out, and all output will go to the VGA port.

  • Solaris 10 x86 Jumpstart TFTP error not defined!!!!

    I have a solaris 10 jumpstart sparc that does all x86 installs. Until now it has been working fine. I now have to jumpstart two new clients a sun X4200 and an X2100. However I cannot get past the loading of the miniroot. It finds the menu.lst.MACRONAME ok, I see the Solaris 10 jumpstart title and then all I see is a number of dots appearing on the client screen and then nothing.
    From the snoop I only get TFTP Error: Not Defined. I have logged a call with Sun but no luck there as yet! Does anyone have any ideas?
    Many thanks in advance

    Yes, the current x86 miniroot from sol 10 06/06 does not contain all the necessary drivers for the X2100 which is an amd64. So it is either unpacking the miniroot and repacking it with the appropriate drivers that are contained in the SUNWnge package or do the manual install and then add them from the supplementary cd that contains these specific drivers. SUN has recorded the incident and they will fix it with the next releases I have been told.

  • Solaris 10 x86 Jumpstart unassisted install

    How do you get a Solaris 10 x86 jumpstart to actually work?!?! Everytime I try to jump an X4500 it will go into an assisted solaris install. It reads my sysidcfg and the majority of my profile. But I have to sit and manually enter the partition information. I've tried multiple variations of "install dhcp" and "nowin" in the boot options to no avail.

    Oracle 10G release 1 only support up to Solaris 9.
    You probably need to install 10G release 2. The second release of major Oracle version is always more stable anyway.

    You might want to ask about patching issue on Solaris update forums since as far as I can tell issue is not related to the fact that patch is for Application Server - it seems to be generic problem with patch signature verification. Solaris update and patching forum URL:
    http://forum.sun.com/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=316
    As for the asadmin question: first you need to start your server using 'asadmin start-domain' command and you do not need to know the port number to do that. After that you can try accessing https://localhost:4849 (4849 is the default value for admin application URL port number).

  • Performace problem in oracle DB after Solaris 10 recommended patching

    Dear All,
    We are facing some performance problems in our oracle DB qerries and reports recently. We applied Solaris 10 recommended patchset on april 24th. Our monthly report generation acitivity is now running for last 3 days i.e may 11,12,13 and application team is complaining of degraded performance. I can see that the cpu usage on the server is about 100% during the report generation , but everything else is fine. Free memory is 15gb , all mountpoints are under 80% and there is no other hardware issue as well.
    Now app team is suspecting that last month patching could be the cause of the problem, because till last month they were performing this activity without having a performance degradtion.
    I just need to be sure that solaris 10 recommended patches are not causing this issue. Any of you ever faced such an issue after patch installation ?
    The server is V490 with 8 cpu / 32gb RAM. Any hints will be appreciated ?
    Thanks in Advance.

  • Solaris 10 x86 JDS login problem

    Greetings,
    After working flawlessly for a week or so, I suddenly am unable to log in to JDS. After I enter my login information, the screen goes blank, an hourglass icon appears, and then I am kicked back out to the dtlogin display. I can log in with CDE just fine.
    This happens with root, my user account, and a brand new user account I just created. All the permissions on my home directory are fine (and I did a chown -R of everything, just to be safe). This happens both with Xorg and Xsun. I also tried rebuilding the font cache, as an earlier post on this forum had suggested that.
    I originally had thought it might have been a patch problem, but I backed out of every JDS and X patch, and I still can't log in.
    There are no error messages in the Xorg logs or any of the files in /var/adm or /var/log.
    I'd greatly appreciate any help or pointers you all might have. Thanks muchly!

    This is likely to be totally unrelated to your problem but I can't help wonder. And perhaps you may pick up something usefull to debug your problems...
    I have seen this behaviour a few times on KDE. After carefully checking it turned out that some of its datafiles (in ~/.kde) were setup with the wrong permission bits thus making it impossible for me to read/write it (and automaticly overwrite). Now I can't help wonder if this isn't happening to you too, in some issues KDE and Gnome act quite alike.
    A possible option to debug this would be to try and start the Java Desktop from the console. To this end you'd need to put the commands needed to start JDS in your ~/.xinitrc file after which you should be able to use 'startx' to see if it'll run. Make sure you use > and 2> to capture the logs it produces since that will likely help you to find the cause of your problems.

  • Core 2 Duo and solaris x86 11/06 works for me

    This is FYI, since I seen (and posted) problems, but I haven't seen the solution posted.
    I have successfully gotten solaris x86 11/06 to install and run on my core 2 duo machine. I had tried solaris x86 06/06, but I could only run in 32bit mode until patch 118855-19 was installed. It looks like 118855-33 is the baseline for 11/06.
    With 06/06 I had to edit the grub command and add " kernel/unix" to the end of the 2nd line. This would force 32 bit mode rather than 64 bit. If I tried 64 bit, it would enter an endless reboot cycle. Once I installed the patch to 118855-19 I could run solaris 10 06/06 in 64 bit mode without issue.
    Again, since solaris 10 11/06 is at 118855-33, it runs on my core2 machine straight from the install.
    Hope this helps

    On a laptop there is little point with running a 64-bit operating system unless it physically has more than 4gb of ram, or if you are processing datasets exceeding 4GB of ram. Unless you're into assembly or use Solaris for some reason to manipulate media, little is to be gained by using 64-bit versions if anything. The increased pointer, integer, and padding causes more memory to use for the same software, most software on 64-bit operating systems runs in 32-bit mode because there is no need to have 16 exabyte memory addressing capability for anything but media encoders, giant databases, or extremely bloated single-threaded software. Sun Java Creator takes a heck of a lot of ram, but even at peak it's still under 4GB. If you move files bigger than 4GB, the ability to memory map all 4096MB might have less overhead on a 64-bit operating system, but generally from an end-user perspective, especially on a fast Intel or Opteron system, you won't notice the difference much. Solaris is bi-arch, a large chunk of Windows Vista and XP x64 is bi-arch, and most of FreeBSD and Linux are bi-arch in 64-bit versions, as I said, no point in making everything 64-bit. 64-bit device drivers is an issue for every OS, you should stick with 32-bit on a laptop, and hold off on desktops unless you need extended assembly registers available only in 64-bit mode.

  • Solaris 8 linker patch 109147-21 / 109148-21 breaks runtime linker

    The "Sun ONE Studio 8, Compiler Collection Early Access" release requires the
    installation of a linker patch (109147-21 sparc / 109148-21 x86).
    It seems that the solaris 8 linker patch breaks the runtime linker audit feature
    for multithreaded applications.
    I can reproduce the problem like this (using $LD_PROFILE, which makes
    use of the runtime linker audit feature):
    % cat thr.c
    #define _REENTRANT
    #include <stdio.h>
    #include <stdlib.h>
    #include <pthread.h>
    void*
    thr_main(void*arg)
    printf("hello, world!\n");
    int
    main(int argc, char **argv)
    pthread_t tid;
    void *rval;
    pthread_create(&tid, NULL, thr_main, NULL);
    pthread_join(tid, &rval);
    exit(0);
    % cc -o thr thr.c -lpthread
    % thr
    hello, world!
    OK, fine so far...
    Now we try to run the application under rtld audit control:
    % env LD_PROFILE=libc.so.1 thr
    < the multithreaded application hangs >
    % env LD_PROFILE=libc.so.1 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/lwp thr
    < the multithreaded application hangs >
    (on a S8 system with 109148-14 installed, this works without hanging!!)
    A "pstack `pgrep thr`" command shows multiple LWPs, all blocked
    waiting in an lwp_mutex_lock() call, all trying to lock the same
    mutex - which happens to be the dynamic linker's global 'rtldlock'.
    % pstack `pgrep thr`
    7631: thr

    Is this a known bug?
    Are there patches to fix this issue?

    I think this is bugid 4804328.
    Synopsis: auditing of threaded applications results in deadlock
    It doesn't look like the next patch is avilable
    yet, but the bug seems to be on track for being
    fixed in patchid 109147-22 (the next rev of the
    patch you mention. There should be new patches
    for Solaris 8 sparc/intel and Solaris 9 sparc/intel.

  • Please suggest the fastest way to install Solaris x86 PC 30 boxes

    I've already tested one and it's successfully installed.
    I have to install 30 boxes , all are same spec.
    Please advise the fastest procedure to install.
    Note : There is no sparc machine.

    Only problem with imaging a Solaris x86 box is that your machines will end up with the same hostid (which is pseudo-randomly generated at Solaris installation time for x86). This may, or may not, be a problem, depending on what commercial software you use...
    To avoid this, you have to use jumpstart, or do some serious hacking.

  • F90 bug on solaris x86

    Hello,
    I have a short code to show a curious bug on solaris x86 when i compil it with f90 -O3.
    Where can i send it to show this bug ?
    Thanks

    The bug ID for this problem is 6413443. It has been fixed in both the development release and the patch release. Fix should be available in the upcoming patches for Studio 11 and in the next release of Sun Studio Express - SSX3.
    Best regards,
    Boris

  • Sun Solaris SCTP Denial Patch 127127-11 (Unloading SCTP module Solaris 10

    THe patch 127127-11 is suppose to address the SCTP Denial of service vulnerability for solaris 10.
    i am planning not to install this patch but instead to unload this SCTP driver module from the system kernel
    i tried using modunload or update_drv , but (see below). My question , i believe these 2 commands only unload for this session but is not permanent across next reboot. i am thinking to make permanent change will require modiification to /etc/system file. But what is the entry to do this, is it something like....
    /etc/system
    forceunload SCTP driver
    # modinfo | grep sctp
    93 7bf118d8 588 235 1 sctp (SCTP device)
    94 7bf11b90 588 236 1 sctp6 (SCTP6 device)
    myausuv00100443:/usr/kernel
    # modunload -i 93
    can't unload the module: Device busy

    I think the root of the problem is in your "userdir". It is possible that some files are in invalid state there,
    and that's why you cannot start Sun Studio IDE using your account. When you start it using root account,
    you use another "userdir", and that's how you avoid the problem.
    So, where is your "userdir"? By default it is under $HOME/.sunstudio directory.
    On Solaris x86 its name is "12.0-SunOS-i386":
    bash-3.00$ ls -la $HOME/.sunstudio
    total 10

    drwxr-xr-x   5 nikm     staff        512 Feb 28 21:31 12.0-SunOS-i386
    drwxr-xr-x   2 nikm     staff        512 Mar  1 11:07 user_infoI think on sparc its name is "12.0-SunOS-sparc".
    First of all, you can try to run the IDE using your account, but with a new "userdir":
    % sunstudio --userdir /tmp/ud1
    (note: there are 2 '-' characters!)
    If it works for you, there are two ways:
    1. To remove your old "userdir", restart Sun Studio IDE, and reopen all your projects.
    2. Try to repair your old "userdir".
    This second way is very risky, so I suggest you to use the first one.
    In future try to use Sun Studio IDE to delete your old projects - I hope it will work better for you.
    Thanks,
    Nik
