Solaris 2.5 or earlier?

I'm russian OS/Researcher and technical writer. Unfortnataly, very poor, so using only GNU/free/open/shareware, but need to Solaris for learning. I can't use 8/9, because my computer very weak (AMD K6-200/64Mb RAM/3Gb HDD) and my host system is OS/2 Warp4 (require 32-48Mb RAM for himself). Other OSes (Minix, Linux, PicoBSD, Menuet, etc) launched in the VirtualPC/2 or Bochs/2. Anybody have unneeded copy of Solaris x86, which can work with 16Mb RAM (2.1, 2.4, 2.5)? Please, help me! May be, you can donate me? May be, you offer me another option or choice? Thanks for attention. Sorry, if offtopic. I know, my english is ugly... but i read better, than write :)

  • USB API?  Solaris 8 or in 9?

I am looking for any information on the USB api for Solaris. In the early docs on Solaris 8, it was mentioned that the api would be in a future release, but I cannot find it. Does anyone have information about its inclusion (or exclusion) in Solaris 8?
    Thanks in advance,

Have a look at the manpages (in s8) for uhci, ohci, hubd, usb_mid, hid and scsa2usb. The document "Writing Device Drivers" (see docs.sun.com) is also useful, as is the documentation on USB located at http://www.usb.org/developers/home.php3

  • Connecting Solaris 8 (Intel) to Network

I just received Solaris 8 for the Intel platform and was able to successfully install it on a Intel pc but I'm not able to connect the pc to my home network. The pc has a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 lan card and I really don't know where to start. Could anyone please explain in general terms what I must do to connect a Solaris 8 pc to a network?

    DOCUMENT ID: 1105-02
SYNOPSIS: Adding Network Support to Solaris
    OS: Solaris/SunOS
    PLATFORM: Intel
    OS VERSION: 2.x
    TECH AREA: Network
    PRODUCT: Config
KEYWORDS: add network card adapter install file directory adding host nic
    driver
    DESCRIPTION:
When a workstation is placed in service without a network card, or none
is recognized during initial software installation, several files and
directories will not be available to the operating system if future
    networking support is desired.
    SOLUTION:
Solaris will not presume upon any particular network configuration if it
is unable to identify supported network hardware at the factory default
addresses. Hence, the installation scripts will not prompt the user for
network-specific configuration items like ip address, netmasks, hardware
    settings, subnets, etc.
All of these can be added by hand after the machine has had Solaris
    installed on it.
Workaround - Adding support for a network card to an existing system
To add network support to a Solaris workstation previously installed
without a supported network card driver requires adding/changing certain
files in the OS according to which network card is to be added. A
network card that is listed in the Hardware Compatibility List for that
platform (x86, Sparc, or PowerPC) must also be present on the system bus
and identified by the operating system to reside at supported addresses.
The following instructions for identifying a card will apply to x86 and
PowerPC platforms, for the most part. For the Sparc platforms the Open
Boot Prom is able to identify any SBUS card and, in future versions, any
PCI or PCMCIA (PC Card) device that is installed. Note also, that for
PCI devices, some ISA, MCA and EISA devices, as well as some PCMCIA
devices - the addresses, IRQs, memory, and DMA resources will be
assigned by the BIOS or a configuration utility and the driver will be
able to read the info for the device when it is loaded. Check the
Driver Configuration Guide for how to configure your particular device.
First, identify the make and model of your network card and write down
which addresses it occupies in terms of interrupt vector (IRQ), port
address range, DMA channel (if any), and shared memory address range.
Then find the driver configuration file in the /kernel/drv sub-directory
and examine this file to make sure that the addresses on the card will
be seen. For example, on Solaris 2.4 and earlier, the SMC (WD) Model
8003 or 8013 configuration file is /kernel/drv/smc.conf. It should look
    similar to the following:
    #ident "@(#)smc.conf 1.8 93/04/02 SMI"
    # Factory default setting.
    name="smc" class="sysbus" intr=5,3 ioaddr=0x280
    reg=0x280,0xD0000,0x2000;
This means that the factory default for this card is at interrupt 3,
priority 5 and port address 280 hex, at memory address D0000 hex with an
    8k memory range.
If you are instead using a supported 3COM or token-ring adapter, the
driver names for these are "el.conf" & "elx.conf" for 3COM,
    or "tr" for
token- ring. Note that as of Solaris 2.5 some drivers that are unique
to a platform (i.e. - not common to all the Solaris platforms, like
ISA), will be found in /platform/{PLATFORM_NAME}/kernel/drv instead of
/kernel/drv. For the x86 you use i86pc in place of {PLATFORM_NAME}.
Secondly, when logged in as root, bring the driver into service. Do
this by typing drvconfig, devlinks, and touch /reconfigure at successive
"#" prompts. Type "prtconf" to test for the existence of the
    0th
    instance of the driver.
Workaround - Configuring the system to use the network card
You are now ready to modify the filesystem as required. Ensure that the
following directories, files, named-pipes, and symbolic links are
present and have the designated permissions, owner, and group. Those
with a file size of zero can sim

Sounds like ancient code that no longer matches current API's.
Theres not much option except to rewrite those bits.

So the hardware sees the library but the os dos not compute… any idea how to get the drivers working and something under /dev/rmt?

You could experiment with giving OBP the absolute path to that USB device, but I doubt you'll be successful. The Sunfire 280R (same hardware as the Sunblade 1000, Sunblade 2000, and Netra 20) design expected USB to be only for keyboard and mouse, not for any storage devices. If booting ever works manually from a USB stick, then you could create a custom alias for the device.
Try an experiment by using a CD or DVD of an older release of Solaris 10 instead of the current release.
The earlier ones need fewer hardware resources. I also recall a few forum posts that seem to suggest the bootblock structure on the CD's and DVD's of those earlier releases was more compatible with older hardware.
You might also need to get yourself a copy of the OBP 4.x Command Reference Manual, document No. 816-1177

  • Wu-ftpd installable for solaris 10 and solaris 9

    Hi,
I could see only "proftpd" is available http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/freeware
But I am looking for the "wu-ftpd" server which is compatable with Solaris 9 and Solaris 10.
Any one help me from where I can get the "wu-ftpd" installable for solaris 9 and solaris 10 sparc server.
    thanks,
    Amudha

    Hi Robert,
    Thanks for your reply.
I too saw that the ftp version used in solaris 10 by default is wu-ftpd, but I am not sure about it, because when I tried to ftp to my solaris box the version it is started is not "FTP server (Version wu-2.6.2(5)".
I have got the wu-ftpd installable. But I could not get the proper document for configuring the same.
Question1: How to stop existing ftp service and start newly instlaled wu-ftpd in Solaris 9 and Solaris 10 servers?
Earlier solaris 8 version I change the ftpd version in /etc/inetd.conf file and give HUP signal to inetd then this new wu-ftpd version will be used.
Question 2: It always starts the system inbuilt ftp server and also I am getting ftp log in failure for any user which I add newly or even existing users.
could any one help to resolve these issues? Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Need to compile C code for Solaris 5.4 target

    Hi,
I'm current on a project where the target platform is Solaris 5.4. I believe the SunOS version is 2.4. Unfortunately, there is no way I can get the customer to upgrade their server or OS.
In my search so far I've been unsuccessful in finding a compiler for that platform. The oldest gcc I can find is for SunOS 2.5.
What other options do I have?
Will code compiled with the C compiler in the Sun Studio 12 be able to run on SunOS 2.4? If so, is there a command line option I need to set while compiling the code?

No available Sun compiler can be used on, or to generate code for, SunOS 5.4 (Solaris 2.4). Even Sun Workshop 5.0, released in 1998, did not support Solaris 2.4.
If you develop code to be run on Solaris 2.4, you need to compile on Solaris 2.4 (or earlier). Binaries created on a later version of Solaris will not in general run on an earlier version of Solaris. I think that Sun WorkShop 3.0 was the last version that supported Solaris 2.4, but it might have been WorkShop 2.0. Those antiques are not available from Sun.
If I were in this situation, I would tell the customer that the OS and all support software are many years past End Of Service Life. No support is available, the software is no longer available, and I can't help them unless they are willing to upgrade to supported software. (I might also ask the customer if they still use Windows 3.1 on their PCs. The situation is comparable.)
If you don't have that option, your next best hope is that the customer has a C compiler on their system. If so, find a way to use it. If it's a Sun compiler, you will have a problem acquiring a license to run it. You will probably have to run it on their system.
If the customer doesn't have a compiler, I guess you have to keep trolling in newsgroups and forums, looking for a compiler that supports Solaris 2.4. Good luck.

  • Is solaris 10 a 32 bit operating System?

This might have a been stupid question,i am sure.
Is solaris 10 a 32 bit operating System?

For SPARC platforms Solaris 7, Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 was both 32 and 64 bits.
Solaris 2.6 and earlier were only 32 bits.
Solaris 10 and later are only 64 bits.
Thats for SPARC, for x86 i guess that Solaris 9 or 10 was the first one with 64 bit support, but i'm not certain.
    .7/M.

  • Upgrade from Solaris 11 Express to Solaris 11 Release (11/11); Guide MIA?

Would there be an easy way to upgrade from Solaris 11 Express to Solaris 11 Release (11/11)? The FAQ for Solaris 11 Release has the following hopeful text:
Can I upgrade to Oracle Solaris 11 from Oracle Solaris 11 Express or Oracle Solaris 11 Early Adopter?
Yes. Customers can upgrade to Oracle Solaris 11 by using the package management tools. Refer to the Oracle Solaris 11
Transition Guide (http://www.oracle.com/pls/topic/lookup?ctx=E23824&id=MF JAI) for more information
But that link comes up with an error page 404, "topic not found".
The one transition guide I can find is:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E23824_01/html/E21799/index.html
But that covers Solaris 10 jumpstart, not Solaris 11 Express or Early Adopter.
    The Solaris 11 documentation at:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/documentation/index.html
Also seems to mention only Solaris 10, not 11 Express or Early Adopter.
I have already downloaded the full repo for Solaris 11 Release, and the live installer, but I'm hoping it's something as simple as pointing the ips manager to a new repository, or just loading the full repo I already have as a local source. I would also like to keep the dtrace and sun studio set up I have now in the Express version, without reinstalling them on a new release version on bare metal.
If it keeps the features of the express version while ironing out a few kinks (gdm authentication bug, etc.), that would rock.
    Many Thanks,
    Gordon

Alan, Thank You, that worked with no problem at all. 11 Express was already using the correct repository, and only required a pkg command update, then other updates.
    So here's what I'm guessing:
    1. The Oracle Solaris maintained repository for Express and Early Adopter are now the same as Release, but they do require an updated pkg executable and pkg update command.
    2. The second form of the command mentioned in the update guide:
    # pkg set-publisher -g http://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release
    -G http://internal.co.com/solaris solaris
is for using a local copy of the repository within our lan or vpn wan.
    3. Updates should be fairly regular now that Solaris 11 is in release version.
I think the new hash (SHA 256) fried some of our old gdm settings for our users, so we're creating new user accounts, and migrating the older accounts. We don't have too many, so it's not a problem for us. But that brings up another point:
    4. The graphical user manager in Express is now gone, and user and group management are now done with command line interface.
That's fine with me as well. I always use ssh to connect to the machine and then run the screen command for administration. The graphical user manager was always kludgy in Express, and I couldn't get it to work correctly anyway.
This is great stuff so far. Well done.

  • Private nullref symbol in 5.6 but not with 5.5 C++ compiler

We try to use the libmtmalloc.so library with our project using LD_PRELOAD_32 environment variable:
export LD_PRELOAD_32=/usr/lib/libmtmalloc.so.1This library provides advanced memory management and memory debugging features.
We have two Solaris machines named ‘earth2’ and ‘mars’. ‘earth2’ has “CC: Sun C++ 5.6” compiler, while ‘mars’ has an older version “CC: Sun C++ 5.5”.
If we build our application on ‘earth2’ and load it with libmtmalloc.so library, it crashes inside heap memory management functions invoked from std::basic_string methods. The same application built on ‘mars’ machine runs without problems. It seems that the reason of the crash is a visibility of std::basic_string::__nullref symbol generated differently by each version of compiler. The following little code sample demonstrates the problem
    main.cpp
    =======
    #include <string>
    int main()
           std::string strA = "";
           std::string strB = "aaa";
           strA = strB;
          return 0;
}If we build this sample on both machines, we can see that each compiler provides a different visibility of std::basic_string::__nullref symbol.

We want to be able to use the libmtmalloc.so with newer compiler version. Please advise what we should do in order to achieve this goal.

Those old compiler versions probably still have several bugs relating to the string class. Both are End Of Life. No support will be available for C++ 5.5 after this year, and all support ends for C++ 5.6 next year.
The best solution would be to upgrade to a supported release. If you need to build or run on Solaris 8 (which is also End Of Life), get Sun Studio 11, which is free.
If you don't need to build or run on anything earlier than Solaris 9, get Sun Studio 12, which is also free.
"Free" means there is no license fee, no charge for downloading or use, nor for the distribution of applications created with Sun Studio.
Next, whatever compilers you wind up using, be sure to get all the current patches. At a minimum, get the patches for the C compiler, C++ compiler, the compiler "back end" (sometimes called "common components"), and the C++ runtime library. You can get all patches here:
The updated C++ runtime libraries need to be installed on the build system and on all target systems.
You should also be sure that your build processes do not contribute to the problem:
    1. The C++ runtime libraries must be linked dynamically (the .so versions). Static linking can cause program failures when the application consists of other shared (dynamic) libraries, or when you run on a system different from the compilation system.
    2. When you build on one version of Solaris, the application can run on later versions of Solaris, but not on earlier versions.
    3. When you create a binary (.o, .a, .so) using one compiler version, it can be linked into a program created by a later compiler verison, but not into a program created by an earlier compiler version. (Note: the compiler version installed on a computer should not matter, since in a properly-constructed program, there is no runtime dependency on the installed compiler.)
Information about supported compilers and interactions are listed in the Support Matrix:

  • Connection pooling unable to close connection on Oracle 9i 64bit

    Hi there,
We have a Oracle 9i 64 bit server housed on a Solaris 64bit box. Earlier we had a 8i on a solaris 32 bit and things were fine. But after having migrated to 9i, we have been facing a peculiar issue where in the connections being opened by the application do not close/expire. We never had this problem on the 8i box.
    System spec:
    Solaris 64bit ver 8
    JDK 1.4 JDBC thin drivers(ojdbc14.jar)
    JDBC 2.0
    Oracle 9.2.0.8 (64bit)
The application is housed on a 32 bit Solarix box and runs on Tomcat4.1.
Has anyone seen such probs before?? ...any ideas(quick ones) will be appreciated!

Is oracle missing a COMMIT before it is passing the SET TRANSACTION statement??. and is there any relation between the AutoCommit and the Isolation level?

  • Policy Managed RAC database instance on different node

    Dear All,
Recently we have upgrade our production database from 2 node 11.2.0.1/Solaris 10 Sparc to 2 node 12.1.0.2/Solaris 11.2 Sparc
earlier was Admin managed database, now we have created Policy managed database.
    Instance_1 running on node_2
    Instnace_2 running on node_1
how to switch the instance to correct node or what is the concept , why it running vice versa even though assign ORACLE_SID properly.
    please clarify me.
oracle@zhovm-proddb2:/u01/app/12.1.0.2/grid/bin$ srvctl status database -d proddb
Instance proddb_1 is running on node zhovm-proddb2
Instance proddb_2 is running on node zhovm-proddb1
    Thanks.

    Thanks John,
How the cron jobs takes care, is there any different is there between Admin Managed & Policy Managed
    Thanks.
    Muba
I don't know what your cron jobs do. If (for example) they logon to the database through a service published by the scan listeners, they will be happy. If they logon using a deterministic connect string, you have a problem - a problem caused by mis-using the system.

  • Sun Forte 6U2 Compiler Not Responding....

    Hello All,
    I am using Sun WorkShop 6 update 2 C++ 5.3 Patch 111685-19 2003/12/18 to build my application Solaris 5.7.
Earlier it was building properly. But suddently Compiler getting hang after it build some files.
No Error Message is printed and nothing happens.
Can You please help me in figuring out what is happening.......

There could be several things going on. If you are the only
one compiling then you may want to clean out the template
cache repository and see if that helps. Try removing all
the SunWS_cache directories where you are building
the object files and see if that helps.

  • Can't open Firefox any more. Shows up in processes but never activates. It was coming up yesterday but running at around 120k. Did my updates, tested my plug-ins, extensions, etc. but now can't even use it. Any suggestions?

Firefox was working fine but started having crashes this week. Concurrent with multiple problems I'm having with a new Brother printer with driver downloaded via Firefox. No viruses, no spyware, cleaned cache, deleted cookies - have done everything I can think of. And then today, can't even open Firefox though it does show up in processes at around 30K. Yesterday it was coming up at 100k+ when it was working but was very slow. For example, my email through AOL, it duplicated every email I opened, crippling the whole process. Turned off compatability mode - have done everything suggested via the Firefox site. If I have to reinstall it, is there a way I can save my bookmarks?
