Solaris 8 4/01 Installation rebooting

I am trying to install the 4/01 copy of Solaris for the intel and it keeps rebooting the system in the middle of the install. It gets past the point where it is scanning the system and then proceeds to load the kernel. It then reports an error and reboots. I am trying to see the error but it happens fast.

    Any ideas?

    Sometimes, it's just easier and faster
    to just start all over and re-install,
    particularly when you have only a fresh install on your system.
    This time, do not choose to include all the optional "documentation"
    (that's what is held on CD5).
    I have never found a reason to ever read that documentation so I stopped installing it.
    ... or you could download and burn a copy of CD5 and use it when prompted.

  • Solaris 11.2 x86 installation problem on GPT partitioned SSD

    I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8.1 pre-installed on it. I want to install Solaris 11.2 as dual-boot together with the pre-installed windows 8.1.
    The computer has a 128 GB SSD which is GPT partitioned. The SSD has 5 GPT partitions which are in use. I used a partition manager in Windows to shrink the size of the 5th partition (the windows system partition) so that i now have about 31 GB of unpartitioned, unused space after the 5 used partitions where i want to install Solaris into.
    For installation, I downloaded the Solaris text installer ISO and burned it onto a CD-R. Now, whenever the installation menu shows me the GPT partitions of my SSD and i choose "Use a GPT partition of the disk" it always goes back to the first menu screen where it says "Welcome to the Oracle Solaris installtion menu".
    Also, the installation menu shows the 5 used GPT partitions correctly, but then it shows me not one, but two partitions as "unused" with a size of 0.0 MB.
    What am i doing wrong?

    If you have support, then you will be better served by opening a support case.
    Assuming you don't, or you would have gone there already... There may well be bugs with supporting multiple OS's under GPT partitions.  I have no idea how much testing we did for such cases, and to be totally honest we put little effort into dual-booting systems these days, as using VM's in VIrtualBox or other VM managers is a better answer for 90i+% of people.
    That said, posting the output from prtvtoc for the disk would give someone a chance to see if there's an obvious bug.

  • Solaris 10 U6 jumpstart installation always goes into interactive mode desp

    While doing the Solaris 10 U6 jumpstart installation, it is going into interactive mode for netmask.
    This is the sysidcfg file configuration being used :
    bash-3.00# cat /export/home/iserver/jumpstart/donau1/sysidcfg
    system_locale=en_US
    name_service=none
    network_interface=ce2
    {hostname=donau1 netmask=255.255.252.0 ip_address=10.50.57.24 protocol_ipv6=no default_route=10.50.56.1}
    security_policy=none
    terminal=vt100
    timezone="MET"
    timeserver=10.50.57.214
    nfs4_domain=dynamic
    root_password=5YcgZqC0krYjo
    bash-3.00#
    Here the network interface specified is "ce2" and the netmask is as shown above. Still, we observe the problem all the times.
    and I have seen the following messages on the screen
    Attempting to configure interface ce3...
    Skipped interface ce3
    Attempting to configure interface ce2...
    Configured interface ce2
    ip_arp_done: init failed

    Search complete.
    Discovering additional network configuration...
    Completing system identification...
    after this it is going into interactive mode and prompting for netmask . After providing the netmask, installation goes through successfully.
    so please suggest me some solution to avoid it going into interactive mode.

    I have seen this too over the years and it ultimately comes down to something innate:
    Here are a few suggestions:
    1. Try and use interface ce0.
    2. Check default route on both jumpstart server and client.
    3. The arp cache may need to be flushed on the Jumpstart server.
    4. Use snoop and see what happens during the actual RARPing phase between the server and host.
    5. Switch the order in the sysid config file as indicated below:
    system_locale=en_US
    name_service=none
    network_interface=ce2
    {hostname=donau1  ip_address=10.50.57.24 netmask=255.255.252.0 protocol_ipv6=no default_route=10.50.56.1}
    security_policy=none
    terminal=vt100
    timezone="MET"
    timeserver=10.50.57.214
    nfs4_domain=dynamic
    root_password=*****************
    Please note I blanked your root password. Let me know if this helps.

  • Installing oracle9i on solaris 10 but the installer cannot execute

    I was trying to install oracle9i.2 on solaris 10 but the installer cannot execute. Here is the exact error returned by the system " ./runInstaller: ./runInstaller: cannot execute. Can somebody help me out

    Did you check the file execute properties?
    oracle@test:/.../oracle/../..>ll runInstaller
    -rwxrwxr-x   1 oracle     dba          45056 Jul 27  2003 runInstaller If they are not set so, then I think you uncompressed the files with wrong flag, or for example uncompressed the cpio.gz on windows and FTPed it to unix..

  • Yosemite stuck at Installation reboot. Multiple Reboot did not help.

    So I updated, (tried to update) my OS to Yosemite. Took me about 4-5 hours to download it, then when it prompted me to restart for the installation reboot. It got stuck at 50%. I left it, went to bed, went to the office, came home to find it still at 50%. Got fed up so I forced restart it and when it restarted it went back to the same white page with the apple logo and the progress bar, when it reached to 50% it got stuck again.
    As of currently I have rebooted (forced restart) more that 10X but the same thing happens, soon as it reaches 50% it's stuck.
    I tried to do an NVRAM?PRAM? reboot (Command+Alt+P+R) - no effect.
    Help, I dont know what to do, I haven't used my laptop in more than 48 hours and I have deadlines.

    If this started happening without your having made any changes and without a warning of low disk space, then it's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

  • Solaris 10 x86 failed to reboot after initial installation due to display error

    Hi everyone,
    i just finished installing solaris 10 x86 on my computer, and the installation process went smoothly. However, when the system tried to reboot, i got some error related to the display of the monitor, which caused no desktop login can be displayed and no access to the console. I had no way to proceed with the any other operations. The error read as:
    " Out of range<br />
    Hf 30KHz - 70KHz<br />
    Vf 30Hz - 160 Hz<br />
    Current frequency<br />
    Hf 90.3KHz "
    I tried to boot to solaris failsafe mode and run "kdmconfig"
    command to reconfigure video and monitor, but it did not work, since kdmconfig is not supported under that mode.
    Because i have no way to login, the currently available solution seems not working with my situation. Dose anyone have idea or suggestion to figure it out, without reinstalling the OS from the very beginning?
    Very appreciate your time and help.

    Solution found:
    First tried to login using "console login" when solaris booted up, before the desktop login window appeared. Then, run command "kdmconfig", changed the video device to X86 VESA compatible device, which is from the x86 driver and porting kit for solaris, then test/save and exit. After that, reboot the system. Now it is working, not perfect though (due to my old monitor) :)-

    Installation of patch set complete. PLEASE REBOOT THE SYSTEM.
    when i tried to reboot the system by init 6 the service iscsi hanged and produced syslog errors about a unkown iocall -> killed the process. System rebooted w/o errors.
    Does anyone have got an idea how to find out which patch or whatever do produce these errors?

    Hi,
    I'm having the same issue of diskmon core dumps after upgrading grid and database from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.2 on Solaris 10 x86-64. Following this thread, I'm trying to deinstall the Oracle 11.2.0.1 grid home.
    I answered the following questions asked by the grid deinstall tool:
    1. ASM configuration was not detected in this Oracle home. Was ASM configured in this Oracle home (y|n): y
    2. Specify the ASM Diagnostic Destination: /db01/app/oracle/diag/asm/+ASM
    3. Specify the diskgroups that are managed by this ASM instance: DATA FRA
    4. De-configuring ASM will drop all the diskgroups at cleanup time. Do you want deconfig tool to drop the diskgroups:
    If I answer no to question 1, the tool exits with error.
    How do I answer question #4? (confused about this question of dropping diskgroups, it's already been upgraded)
    Deinstall of Oracle db Home 11.2.0.1 was successful.
    The +ASM instance has been upgraded and is running fine under 11.2.0.2 except for the excessive diskmon core dumps.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

  • Solaris 8 Hangs on Warm Reboot w/2 IBM-Branded Intel Pro 100B Cards

    Hello,<P>
    I have a kind of a weird problem with an installation of Solaris 8 Intel that I've been playing around with. The system is an old IBM PC 350 with an Evergreen P-200 upgrade chip (it was originally a P-133), 96MB of RAM, and two IBM-branded Intel Pro 100B Ethernet cards. All-in-all it's working ok, but whenever I do a warm reboot (i.e. anything but a full shutdown and power cycle), it hangs almost immediately after it starts to boot the kernel. It gets past the device configuration wizard, and the "select (b) or (i)" part, but hangs right after it clears the screen. If I power it off and back on, it boots normally. I haven't experienced any other issues with the system.<P>
    I know people that have the exact same setup (down to the Evergreen upgrade chip) except for the two Ethernet cards, and they don't have this problem.<P>
    Has anyone seen behavior like this before? Do you know of any way to rectify it? Any assistance would be appreciated. I can be reached via e-mail at [email protected] Thanks!

    Thanks for your quick reply I would definitely suspect hardware (especially as my PC isn't in the prime of its youth), however a MemTest86+ test and a HDAT2 and a Hitachi Drive Fitness Test throw up no errors what so ever (No bad segments, no warnings or anything).
    This is just a theory of mine but my pc doesn't seem to hang with SystemRescueCD or Parted Magic (both Linux based), so maybe its just Arch specific, although I will need to do more testing on that front
    Thanks

    When ever I am trying to install solaris 8 or 9 on this server it is server. The installation is going through fine. But after the reboot the server is panic-ing.
    some times with (when installed 64 bit )
    not found : maxclsysprI
    do_relocations : /platform/sun4u/kernel/sparcv9/genunix
    panic - boot : exitto64 returned from client program
    program terminated.
    and some times with :
    not found : kmem_cache_create
    krtld: error during initial load/link phase
    panic - boot : exitto returned from client program
    program terminated.
    Please help me out.
    Thanks,
    Mitra.

    1. Please check whether you Name Server is alive. You can check that
    using ping command.
    2. If you prefer to use DNS/NIS/NIS+, you must modify nsswitch.conf
    file to reflect that. Please check out nsswitch.nisplus file in /etc
    directory. In that file, /etc/nsswitch.conf it should say for
    hosts line 'dns files', if dns is the first one to resolve the host
    names.
    Hope this helps.
    Thx

  • Solaris 10 11/06 installation problem?

    hi,
    i am new to solaris and just started to install the solaris 10 11/06, the partition for solaris installation is the first primary partition, auto slices was 4,4 GB for /, 1,4 GB for ovarlape,10 GB for /export/home and 500 MB for swap but i customized just for 2 slices one / 14 GB and other swap 660 MB, the installation process completed 100% but then hanged with this error messages:
    Installing boot information:
    -Updating boot enviroment configuration
    -Installing boot blocks (c0d1)
    -Installing boot blocks (/dev/rdsk/c0d1s0)
    connot open/stat device /dev/rdsk/c0d1s2
    ERROR: installboot (1M) failed
    ERROR: could not install boot blocks
    i pressed the reboot button and got the black screen with this message:
    Bad PBR Sig
    I wiped the installation again and want to install but waiting for help please:
    First what all that error means?
    Second where is my installation mistake to solve that?
    Third is / and swap enough for installaion or use the auto layout of solairs as i mentioned above?

    1-Make the Solaris partion "the only" active partition
    2-Boot up the system in single user mode, mount "a"
    3-Install solaris grub on mbr (/a/sbin/installgrub -m /a/boot/grub/stage1 /a/boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/<slice>) (i like solaris bundled version of grub :) )
    before 3, make sure you got the entries for any other operating system/sytems in your active grub's /boot/grub/menu.lst file to be added to solaris's menu.lst file later.
    Reboot, edit menu.lst as necessary.
    Good luck.

  • Solaris 10 hands-off installation from a bootable DVD

    Hello,
    I have a problem with installing the Solaris 10 using a bootable DVD with a flar archive. I want this installation to be totally hands-off, but unfortunately after I run this boot command at the ok prompt:
    ok boot cdrom - install ...
    the system is rebooted and the interactive Solaris Installation Program is launched:
    {color:#3366ff}-- The Solaris Installation Program
    The Solaris installation program is divided into a series of short sections
    where you'll be prompted to provide information for the installation. At
    the end of each section, you'll be able to change the selections you've
    made before continuing.
    About navigation...
    - The mouse cannot be used
    - If your keyboard does not have function keys, or they do not
    respond, press ESC; the legend at the bottom of the screen
    will change to show the ESC keys to use for navigation.
    {color}
    {color:#3366ff}
    F2_Continue F6_Help
    {color}
    On the next screens I have to choose the NFS4 domain:
    {color:#3366ff}-- NFSv4 Domain Name{color}
    {color:#3366ff}NFS version 4 uses a domain name that is automatically derived from the
    system's naming services. The derived domain name is sufficient for most
    configurations. In a few cases, mounts that cross domain boundaries might
    cause files to appear to be owned by "nobody" due to the lack of a common
    domain name.
    The current NFSv4 default domain is: ""
    {color}
    {color:#3366ff}NFSv4 Domain Configuration
    {color}
    {color:#3366ff}[X] Use the NFSv4 domain derived by the system
    [ ] Specify a different NFSv4 domain
    Esc-2_Continue Esc-6_Help
    {color}
    After I select "Continue", the installation is proceeding automatically.
    Could you please tell me what I should to to make this installation hands-free?
    The sysidcfg file contains these parameters:
    system_locale=C
    timezone=PST8PDT
    timeserver=localhost
    terminal=sun-cmd
    name_service=NONE
    nfs4_domain=dynamic
    network_interface=primary {netmask=255.255.255.0 protocol_ipv6=no}
    security_policy=NONE
    I have found some information in the internet, that I need to create the
    .NFS4inst_state.domain file in /etc directory. But it doesn't work...
    I have also read that I need to edit the post installation script, but as far as I know this script is executed after the installation, so it doesn't affect the solaris Installation Program that is launched after the first reboot.
    If you could give me any tips on how to resolve yhis problem, I'd be very thankful.
    Regards,
    Przemek

    I had similar, not identical, issues with a custom JumpStart DVD I was creating. I was not using flar and it was for x86, not SPARC.
    I found that changing the case for the value assigned to network_interface made a difference. In looking at the sysidcfg manpage and online JumpStart documentation, all the examples they used had capitalized "PRIMARY" and "NONE". When I changed the value to the capitalized equivelant, my particular issue had gone away.
    You may also want to consider adding ip_address and default_route to the network_interface section. Test either way to identify the differing results.
    In my particular scenereo, I did not want any networking configuration to be done. The resulting line in sysidcfg was:
    network_interface=NONE {hostname=jsclient}HTH

  • Solaris 8 10/01 installation aborts

    Hello!
    I'm sorry if this question is asked once again, but I was not able to
    find a solution for this problem after searching forums, web and google news.
    I'm trying to install Solaris 8 10/01 on this machine:
    AMD Thunderbird 1200
    396Mb RAM
    ABIT KT7A, bios level 4A
    IDE0
    -IBM (~9GB) - master
    -HITACHI (~120GB) - slave
    IDE1
    -CDRW TEAC CD-W58E
    Matrox G200
    Realtek 8029 (NE2000 compatible) eth card.
    The CDs are correctly written (on the same CDRW drive reading them),
    there is no problem reading back the data.
    I've tried to install booting from CD1 or the DCA diskette.
    It shows a ACPI-nonACPI device conflict (seems from other posts that
    it's ignorable).
    I have three choices for booting:
    DISK TARGET 0 (the IBM) OnBoard PCI bus 0 dev 7 func 1
    DISK TARGET 1 (the Hitachi) OnBoard PCI bus 0 dev 7 func 1
    CD TARGET 0 (the TEAC) OnBoard PCI bus 0 dev 7 func 1
    All three have "bus 0 dev 7 func 1". The IBM disk drive and the CD have the same
    target ( 0 ).
    It silenly reboots soon after choosing any of the two options
    (Interactive or JumpStart).
    After digging a little on google/news, I found out the "b kabd -v"
    option that allows me have some output.
    It seem to recognize correctly the CD drive, but it panics after that.
    Some info from the last visible screen (with the degugger):
    ata_init_drive_pciide = dma_disabled
    ATAPI device at targ 0, lun 1 , lastlun 0x0
    model CD-W58E ...various CD drive details (seems correctly identified)...
    PCI device ide@1, ata1
    ata1 is /pci@0,0/pci-ide@7,1/ide@1
    sd0 at ata1 : target 0, lun 0
    sd0 is /pci@0,0/pci-ide@7,1/ide@1/sd@0,0:a fstype ufs
    panic[cpu0]/thread=fec17540 : vfs_mountroot : cannot mount root
    fec12bdc genunix : vfs_mountroot + 5c (fec0974c fec0103c)
    fec12bec genunix main+78()
    stopped at int20 + 0xb : ret
    I've tried various combinations of:
    -UDMA enabled/disabled (BIOS)
    -1 or both HDDs installed in different combinations with the
    -CDROM drive (the jumpers changed accordingly)
    -safe defaults for BIOS setup
    -slowed down clock (900MHz). "Native"=1.2GHz, never overclocked
    -enabled-dma boot param (can't remember exact name) 0 or 1
    -acpi-user-options = 0x2 (targeting the ACPI problem, not sure if of
    any use)
    -all unused HW out (TV Tuner, soundcard, )
    Same result.
    I have no problems running Slackware and OS/2 on the same hardware.
    I had no problems running in the past Win2000 on this machine.
    Any idea/solution?
    I can post more details concerning the hardware if that's of any use.
    Thank you!
    Regards,
    Radu

    Try to find a good old cdrom device (or maybe a dvdrom) and use that as the boot device instead of
    the cdrw drive. Don't know what the problem is with solaris x86 and (certain) cdrw drives, but
    apparently there is some problem with them because you're not the first user with this problem.
