Solaris 8 x86 patch cluster installation

hi. i recently installed solaris 8 x86 on my intel p4 machine. i got through the installation fine but i am now running into problems with installing the 8x86 recommended patch cluster.
whenever i run the install_cluster script, it says every patch failed to install due to return code 1. i even tried manually installing the patches manually via patchadd...but i end up getting a message saying the patch directory is not valid.
i basically downloaded the 8x86 recommended patch cluster zip file on a windows 2k machine. i unzip the file and then burn the patches onto a cd. i then copy the patches from the cd onto my solaris machine and try to install the patches that way. so far...this doesn't work..and i dont know what im doing wrong.
does anyone know how to fix this problem? thx.

hi again. i just fixed my problem. apparently when i unzipped the file and then burned it onto cd...the data got corrupted. i fixed it by copying the zip file onto cd and then extracting the patches onto the solaris machine.

  • Solaris 8 patches added to Solaris 9 patch cluster and vice versa

Has anyone noticed this? On the Solaris 8 and 9 patch cluster readmes, it shows sol 9 patches have been added to the sol 8 cluster and sol 8 patches have been added to the sol 9 cluster. what's the deal? I haven't found any information about whether or not this is a mistake.

    Desiree,
Solaris 9's kernel patch 112233-12 was the last revision for that particular patch number. The individual zipfile became so large that it was subsequently supplanted by 117191-xx and that has also been supplanted when its zipfile became very large, by 118558-xx.
Consequently you will never see any newer version than 112233-12 on that particular patch.
What does <b>uname -a</b> show you for that system?
Solaris 8 SPARC was similarly effected, for 108528, 117000 and 117350 kernel patches.
If you have login privileges to Sunsolve, find <font color="teal">Infodoc 76028</font>.

  • What is the latest Solaris 8 Patch Cluster available?

Currently I'm using SunOS Release 5.8 Kernel Version Generic_108528-29. Is this latest kernel version available on Solaris 8?

Also, you can look up the patch id ( 108528-29 ) for kernel to see if it's latest (it won't be obsoleted)

  • Problems installing patch cluster

hello. i recently installed solaris 8 x86 and was trying to install the solaris 8 x86 patch cluster. so i downloaded the zip file and then unzipped it a directory called patch. i then run the install_cluster file (as specified on the cluster_readme file) and get thru the prompt that says it will check for adequate space. After that, the script tries to install the patches, but fails on each one. every patch fails because it says the patch directory is not valid and returns the error code 1. i even tried manually installing a patch via the patchadd command and the same error message occurs.
can someone tell me what im doing wrong or forgot to do? many thx.
    ~fl~

If you open the directory in CDE's file manager, right click on the zipped file and select unzip. The cluster will be unzipped to a directory structure called x86_recommended or something of the sort. Change to that directory to run the patch cluster install script. The patch script is looking for that directory structure.

  • ASE for Solaris x86

I really need a developers edition of ASE for Solaris x86. The current versions that are available are only for Linux or Windows. Is there anywhere I can get the Solaris x86 version??

You haven't mentioned which ASE version you're looking for so I'm going to assume a newer/recent version of ASE 15.7 is sufficient ...
For quite awhile now all ASE downloads (IR, GA, EBF, SPxxx) have contained the entire code line (ie, you don't have to find a GA release and then apply a smaller/delta ebf patch file to get the latest version).
If you've got access to the EBF downloads @ sybase.com you should be able to download a recent copy of ASE 15.7 for Solaris/x86.  During installation just pick the developer license version (the install will generate a generic *lic file for the developers version).
While there may be a way to download the file from the SAP website(s), I wouldn't have a clue since a) the SAP websites are poorly-designed/confusing and b) SAP is clamping down pretty hard on what Sybase related downloads are available and to whom.

Is there a way to download the Solaris 10 without having a SunSolve account? When I tried to download it I get redirected to a login/register page which requires a SunSolve support contract.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

    Hello Will,
To download a Solaris 10 patch cluster a service contract is required. There are no alternate sources !

Sometimes, it's just easier and faster
to just start all over and re-install,
particularly when you have only a fresh install on your system.
This time, do not choose to include all the optional "documentation"
(that's what is held on CD5).
I have never found a reason to ever read that documentation so I stopped installing it.
... or you could download and burn a copy of CD5 and use it when prompted.

  • Solaris 2.6 Patch cluster

Is there anyone out there knows where I can get the last Solaris 2.6 patch cluster? I know it's de-supported now but sadly some legacy applications are still out there and need to run on old software/hardware.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jonathan

if you run a pstack against the core, I might
recognize the failure. Usually, logging is of no
use, as we don't log a crash. . .Thanks. I'll do that. It just generated a new core file.
    >
I don't know of any problems with installing 4.15p7,
nor of installing later hotfixes on top of it, and
I've been supporting Messaging Server since 4.0 came
    out. . . .
If you've had file permission issues since 4.05,
that's truly news to me, unless it was that pesky
problem with Admin Server, where it would change the
permissions of the logs when it went to roll them
over. I don't remember when we fixed that one, but
we did..We've had file permission issues with the patches since 4.0. When we'd upgrade some of the files would be owned by root and not exec'able by nobody. Some of the patches would fail when the patch process would try to bind to the directory (I don't know why). We've used NMS since the 3.x version. It has also been a long time since we tried to patch to app because our experience was bad. It was stable for a long time (once we disabled shared folders and resolved the nscd issue).

  • MB.ACT light OFF --- after Solaris 9 recommended patch cluster applied

After applying the recommended patch cluster to several SunFire V210s/V240s the "system ready" or "activity" light on the front panel no longer illuminates. The systems come up fine and are fully functional, just no light.
While this has absolutely no impact on usability it is a bit disconcerting for the folks in the server room when glancing at the rack and not seeing the typical green light.
I first noticed the problem in mid 2007 and have tried patch clusters as recent as last month, but the light remains out.
One interesting discovery is that if I reset (hard) the ALOM module the light comes back on. However, if the system is subsequently rebooted for any reason the light does not come back on...
If anyone can shed some light on the issue I would greatly appreciate it!

Oracle 10G release 1 only support up to Solaris 9.
You probably need to install 10G release 2. The second release of major Oracle version is always more stable anyway.

    Welcome to the OTN forums.
This is your very first post to the forums, so before you go any further, a piece of advice:
When you give your post a title of "Hi All" it does not tell anyone anything about what your inquiry might be.
The topic title that you place onto each one of your posts is just as important as what you place into your post. It tells everyone whether they need to spend any time with it. It tells everyone whether you are worth spending time with, whether you will be able to understand what they type in a reply, how technical they can be in a response.
These are technical forums. They are not chat rooms for casual feel-good gatherings. They are not `blogs`. The site is also NOT a way to make contact to Oracle's technical support staff.
