Solaris on Virtual PC

When I went to download Solaris 10 OS I was presented with two different dowload options: Solaris for SPARC or Solaris for x64/x86. I was planning on previewing the Solaris OS via Virtual PC. I am wondering if this is possible and if so which download should I try.
Thank you.

The terms "sparc" and "x86" relate to the architecture of the machine. Sun servers and workstations are Sparc platforms. However in the last couple of years, Sun has released x86 platforms with Intel chips to try and get a foothold on the growing Linux market.
A typical PC has an x86 architecture which more commonly uses either Intel or AMD chips.
HINT: If you just want to try out Solaris, you can download a "live" version and simply run it from your CD/DVD player without having to install it.
Welcome to Solaris 10!

I want to configure two node cluster in solaris 10.
I created a partion 0f 2 GB but forgot to name it as /globaldevices while installing.
Now, I am unable to modify my partition table as the error is " can't modify while it has mounted partitions ".
Kindly tell me how to have a /globaldevices partition without reinstalling solaris 10 virtual machine.
Also I want to free the 2 GB space and I want to give it to root.
    Please help

Moved from the General Solaris 10 forum
to the Clustering forum, hopefully to more on-topic.
    @O.P.
Please try to pay attention to where you actually place your posts.
If you pick an appropriate forum, you'll get better responses.
These are technical forums, not a bunch of chat rooms.
For example, there are forum members that ONLY post to the clustering forum and those same people NEVER contribute to the Solaris 10 forum.

  • Solaris 10 virtual machine for VMware

I've tried the "Solaris 10 OS, AMD x64 Platform - Solaris Enterprise System Virtual Machine for VMware (Solaris 10 11/06) 3.0". I've d/l the virtual appliance for vmware one can find from there : http://developers.sun.com/solaris/downloads/solaris_apps/index.jsp#vmware
    I encountered 2 problems :
The first was the network (netcard) wasn't recognised at all. It's strange because the settings should be the same for every vmware virtual machines. It may be because I'm running the latest version from vmware (10.0.2). The default option was NAT, and I tried the others as well. All other systems I'm using with vmware are working correctly, including the opensolaris "Nexenta".
The second one was with the screen resolution, it was excessively huge, around 2800 x 2000. I couldn't change it in the gnome desktop (the option had no effect). I managed to change it by altering the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. The same was for the keyboard settings, I couldn't switch to azerty (french) keyboard. I had to change it in xorg.conf file.

im new to vmware too, but just wan to share my experience with you.
5.5.1 vmware workstation with vmtool installed.
    - my NIC still define as pcn0, encountered packet drop network issue
    - dtlogin doesn't work properly with my screen resulation, mouse work fine without pressing ctrl+alt key to get out from vmware
6.0 vmware workstation with vmtool installed.
    - no more packet drop issue, especially when i ssh from pc to vmware.
    - gdm fit to screen, GUI work fine.
    - my shared folder working now, mount as /hgfs.

  • Solaris HotSpot Virtual Machine Error, Unexpected Signal 11 NEED HELP

    Hi all
We are running a thin jsp application for video streaming live event running
on a BEA WebLogic Personalization Server 3.2 on Solaris (streaming servers
are separate and do not affect the server). After putting it in production
we have experienced serious memory problems with our environment. When the
servers are running under heavy load, they eat all available memory until
they finally crash, please see log message below. We can see that the
garbage collection is running but it doesn't seem to keep up with the memory
consumption. The problem is described in a bug report at SUN, but it is
marked as a "no fix" with the reasoning that programming resources are now
    allocated to jdk1.4?

We have now upgraded to jdk1.3.1_02 B02 but still have a problem with memory
leaks. We have so far been able to restart the server before memory is
exhausted and has hence not seen the same error message after the upgrade.
The memory is not freed when Weblogic aborts, the SUN server has to be
rebooted to free the memory. We now have to restart our 3 servers aprox.
every 6 hours. The servers are equiped with 2G physical memory each. We have
also tried setting hotspot to -client and setting -XX:MaxPerm.

    This bug is described in
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4408730.html.
It is also described as a known problem in
    http://www.weblogic.com/platforms/sun/index.html.
It has also been described by SUN as a problem arising from multiple nested
try/catch blocks appearing in generated java code from servlets, especially
    on WebLogic and Apache.
As SUN has said that they will not fix this bug we are trying to find a
workaround, but have yet found one. We have been looking into changing the
heap size and setting GC options on the JVM, but haven't found the optimal
solution. We would be very interested in experiences with tuning gc
parameters, documentation on solaris patches for JVMs, JVM tuning, WebLogic
    tuning, HotSpot tuning.
Has anyone experienced similar problems and found a workaround. We would be
very happy to hear any suggestions as soon as possible,
    thanks

The Host Key should be displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the VirtualBox machine's window. A pop-up message will also appear when you first start up the virtual machine, explaining that you will need the host key to escape out.

  • How solaris calculate virtual Memory ?

    Hi,
I am using Solaris 10 on both sparc and x86 server.
I am still unable to comprehend how solaris calculate Total Virtual Memory.
We can check the Virtual Memory in system by SMC tool and by #swap -s command.
    swap -s
    total: 6071888k bytes allocated + 1010404k reserved = 7082292k used, 52134560k availableAbove output shows that total virtual memory is = 7082292k used, 52134560k available = 57829 MB
Sun documents says that solaris calculate Virutal Memory by combining the available RAM with total swap space
    System swap is 32773 MB
And availabe RAM righ now is 22506
    # vmstat 1 3
kthr      memory            page            disk          faults      cpu
r b w   swap  free  re  mf pi po fr de sr s2 -- -- --   in   sy   cs us sy id
    0 0 0 55999408 25906620 579 106 1410 2 2 0 0 69 0 0 0 3919 13684 6331 3  2 95
    1 0 0 52134492 23046320 9 56 0 0  0  0  0  4  0  0  0 1391 4097 2257  0  1 99
    0 0 0 52134372 23046196 0 6 0  0  0  0  0  5  0  0  0 1511 4367 2474  0  1 99So combining them becomes 55279 MB which is not the same as displaying by SMC and swap -s
Does any body know how solaris exactly calculate the virtual memory which it indicates in SMC and swap -s ?

If you look at the man page it shows for the -s flag:
available The total swap space in
    bytes that is currently
    available for future reser-
    vation and allocation.
That means if swap has been allocated it wont be shown in this total, Solaris has a funny way of dealing with memory, it will only free physical memory when it needs to reuse it. If you want to tell if a system is paging the best way is to use sar with the -g flag e.g
    sar -g 10 10
    Or iostat etc

Visual Desktop is need to run some applications in our test and development suite.  Is there a way to enable/view the desktop from a virtual machine built on the sparc platform running Solaris 10 or higher?

I am using Oracle VM Manager to build virtualized operating systems.  The named domain types or virtualization mode is PVM. This is a new area for me so my apologies if I get the terminology wrong or don't answer your question properly.

  • How to install SUNWi1cs in Solaris 10 under Virtual Box

Hallo!I am a total newbie in Solaris.
I have installed Solaris 10 (guest OS)via Virtual Box in XP (host OS).I would like to install Oracle 10g in Solaris 10 but prerequisite s/w like SUNWi1cs and SUNWi15cs aren’t installed.
I have been trying to install this through commands such as
    pkgadd –d /cdrom/cdrom0/Solaris_10/Product SUNWi1cs SUNWi15cs
but this directory does not exist.
How would I access this directory ?Will this mean mounting the CD-ROM with a Solaris 10 DVD-R disc or can I access the Solaris 10 virtual box files in the XP path shown below
    C:\Documents and Settings\JOEY\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning\SOLARIS_10\PRODUCT
The Oracle 10g for Solaris zipped file is in the XP OS.How do I transfer this file (and any other files in XP)into Solaris 10 to be able to install Oracle 10g in Solaris under Virtualbox?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
If u have installed Solaris operating system on some VMWare by iso file then it will treat iso file as CD. So that following steps will resolve ur issue.
    1. Mount that iso file into /mnt file system.
For example ur iso mounted file system like this:-
    /mnt/cdrom/Solaris_10/Product
    2. Then run this command:-
    pkgadd -d /mnt/Solaris_10/Product SUNWi1cs SUNWi512
It will ask would to like to add these then type Y
    3. Successful installed package message will displayed.
It is the right way to add package from source

This inquiry was initially posted to the Predictive Self Healing forum for some unfathomable reason.
It has now been moved to the Oracle VM and Virtualization forum for closer topic alignment.
    Advice to original poster:
If you couldn't read enough posts to figure out which forum was appropriate, how are you going to be able to read replies to your question? You should go back to wherever you found Virtualbox and Solaris and read the product documenteation. Installation instructions are already there.

  • Solaris 10 PV-on-HVM drivers (SUNWxvmpv) not working with Xen 4.0.x

I have an HVM Solaris 10 virtual machine guest (domU) running on Xen 4.0.1. I'd like to use a PV (paravirtualized) NIC instead of an emulated NIC, and I know Solaris 10 has pv-on-hvm drivers installed by default (SUNWxvmpv). I'm using Solaris 10 10/09 (U8) release, SUNWxvmpv xVM Paravirtualized Drivers Version 11.10.0,REV=2008.02.29.14.37.
On Xen 3.3, when I specify a PV NIC, the Solaris 10 kernel detects the device (xnf0), loads the drivers and everything works as expected. On Xen 4.0, using the same exact VM configuration file and disk image, the kernel doesn't see the device. I've tried filing this bug with the Xen developer community, but I suspect that the problem is that the interface presented by the paravirtualized devices changed between Xen 3.3 and Xen 4.0 and the Solaris xVM PV drivers were never updated to account for this.
Are there updated PVHVM drivers for Solaris 10 available? Is the source for the drivers available? Thanks for any help you can provide.

When I went to save a file in firefox, the toolbar started working once the save as dialog popped up. It is definitely a bug in 6.10.2's toolbar code. Hopefully they fix it ASAP.

  • Solaris 10 3/05 on VMWare Workstation 4.5

Does anyone have experience installing Solaris 10 Intel on VMWare workstation 4.5?
    The setup:
    Dell Inspiron 5160
    Windows XP Pro sp2
    VMWare Workstation 4.5
    1gig of ram
    3.2ghz cpu hyperthreading
    CD-RW/DVD-/+RW
    Dell Wireless 4150
    Broadcom NIC
I have installed early release versions b69 and b72, and the official release 3/05. Out of the three, b69 performs the best and has less problems with the cdrom.
One problem that I am having: when I put in a cd, the Solaris 10 virtual machine will kick it back out.
I also have fedora core 3 and redhat 9 installed. They don't have any problems with inserting a cd.
And it doesn't seem to matter which OS is 'active' , meaning, all mouse and keyboard input go to that OS, if the solaris 10 virtual machine is running, then it kicks the cd back out.
Does anyone know what causes this problem? I have Solaris 10 3/05 intel installed right now.
Does anyone have best practices that they would like to share? I have already looked at everything i could find on the vmware.com web site.

The workaround that I did was not changing LBA, but specify the root(/) with in 1024 cylinder, and put swap after it, then put /usr, /var, /tmp, /opt, /home, etc using cylinder number to not exceed the total number. Thus / will not need to exceed 1024 cylinders.
See if it works for you.
    A.
