Solaris x86 on HP pavilion laptop

I am trying to install solaris x86 version on my pavilion zt1000. The solaris install cd boots and then crashes with the following "boot panic: trap type 0 error 0 at 13bd7f" and bunch of register information.
I have tried 3 different CDs and even tried creating a bootable floppy disk. The floppy disk booting just hangs at the solaris boot manager screen.
Any ideas ???
To start with can solaris be installed on a HP pavilion
Thanks for any info anybody can provide.
Sriram

I do remember that everyone who installed on a laptop had to use an external keyboard during the installation. While I dont have any info specific to the HP, search the forum for past laptop posts - someone has probably had a similar issue and take a look at these pages.

  • Solaris x86 11/06 hung on Acer TravelMate 8210 Laptop

I've just installed Solaris x86 11/06 on my Acer TravelMate 8210 laptop. The installation was completed successfully. However, when the system is rebooted into Solaris, it is always hung at:
Use is subject to license terms.
This problem happens with both of the 32-bit and 64-bit kernel. While booting with the option -kv, the system always stops at:
    PCI Express-device: pci8086,2448@1e, pci_pci0
    pci_pci0 is /pci@0,0/pci8086,2448@1e
Ive also tried to boot with the -s option, but it doesnt help.
Is there anything else that I can try? Thank you in advance!

Before the installation, I ran the Solaris Installation Check Tool 1.2, and it said that the system is able to run Solaris.

I've just installed the Solaris Express DE 2/07 and still have the same problem.

  • Core 2 Duo and solaris x86 11/06 works for me

This is FYI, since I seen (and posted) problems, but I haven't seen the solution posted.
I have successfully gotten solaris x86 11/06 to install and run on my core 2 duo machine. I had tried solaris x86 06/06, but I could only run in 32bit mode until patch 118855-19 was installed. It looks like 118855-33 is the baseline for 11/06.
With 06/06 I had to edit the grub command and add " kernel/unix" to the end of the 2nd line. This would force 32 bit mode rather than 64 bit. If I tried 64 bit, it would enter an endless reboot cycle. Once I installed the patch to 118855-19 I could run solaris 10 06/06 in 64 bit mode without issue.
Again, since solaris 10 11/06 is at 118855-33, it runs on my core2 machine straight from the install.
    Hope this helps

On a laptop there is little point with running a 64-bit operating system unless it physically has more than 4gb of ram, or if you are processing datasets exceeding 4GB of ram. Unless you're into assembly or use Solaris for some reason to manipulate media, little is to be gained by using 64-bit versions if anything. The increased pointer, integer, and padding causes more memory to use for the same software, most software on 64-bit operating systems runs in 32-bit mode because there is no need to have 16 exabyte memory addressing capability for anything but media encoders, giant databases, or extremely bloated single-threaded software. Sun Java Creator takes a heck of a lot of ram, but even at peak it's still under 4GB. If you move files bigger than 4GB, the ability to memory map all 4096MB might have less overhead on a 64-bit operating system, but generally from an end-user perspective, especially on a fast Intel or Opteron system, you won't notice the difference much. Solaris is bi-arch, a large chunk of Windows Vista and XP x64 is bi-arch, and most of FreeBSD and Linux are bi-arch in 64-bit versions, as I said, no point in making everything 64-bit. 64-bit device drivers is an issue for every OS, you should stick with 32-bit on a laptop, and hold off on desktops unless you need extended assembly registers available only in 64-bit mode.

  • Solaris-x86 mount fat32 partition, the partition max size limit?

    solaris10 x86, laptop, 10G FAT32 partition for windows & x86 exchange data.
the fat32 partition mount as normal, can be read fine.
but write some file by x86, that can not find by windows.
anyboy know did the solaris-x86 mount fat32 partition, the partition max size limit? or no limit, why this problem occur?

    Mounting Windows partition in Solaris
The easiest way to share data now is to do it through a FAT32 partition. Solaris
recognises it as partition of type pcfs. It is specified as device:drive where drive is
either the DOS logical drive letter (c through z) or a drive number (1 through 24).
Drive letter c is equivalent to drive number 1 and represents the Primary DOS partition
on the disk; drive letters d through z are equivalent to drive numbers 2 through 24,
and represent DOS drives within the Extended DOS partition.Syntax is
    mount -F pcfs device:drive /directroy-name
where directory name specifies the location where the file system is mounted.
To mount the first logical drive (d:) in the Extended DOS partition from an IDE hard
disk in the directory /d use
    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0d0p0:d /d
You can use mount directory-name after appending following line is in
    /etc/vfstab file
    device:drive directory-name pcfs no rw
    for example
    c0d0s0:c /c pcfs no rw
If your windows partition like the following means
    C: - NTFS, D:-FAT32, E:-NTFS, F:-FAT32
    Then you can only mount D, F not C & E.
    Mounting D Drive:
    mount -F pcfs /dev/disk/c0d0p0:c /mountpoint
    Mounting F Drive
    mount -F pcfs /dev/disk/c0d0p0:d /mountpoint
The driveletter only for fat not including other file systems (ntfs or any linux filesystems).

  • Stupid question  - What platforms does Solaris x86 run on?

    Hello,
I am a longtime Solaris for sparc user. Could someone please direct me to information about what platforms/processors Solaris for x86 runs on? Are there dual-bootable Windows/Solaris systems or something? What about laptops? I will start searching myself for info, but if anyone knows of a great strehouse of info on this matter, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks!

What platforms does Solaris x86 run on? not such a stupid question if one is to inquire, does it run on intel conroe chips, yonah? are both chips recognized, does it run at 64 bit on conroe? has anyone got it going on mac? how about the 4 proc intel chips released. any one tried this and last but not least xen virtualistion with new built in amd/intel virtualization technology...

  • Mounting a Solaris x86 CD/DVD from a remote Windows CD/DVD-ROM drive

    Greetings, all.
Is it possible to mount a remote Windows CD/DVD-ROM drive? I have the Solaris 10x86 Companion Software DVD sitting in a CD/DVD-ROM drive that's installed on a Windows server on my network. It is shared-out (F:) and the two servers can ping each other. I've also confirmed the NFS services/daemons are running on the Solaris x86 machine. I've tried the following variations but, all have failed to produce successful results:
    # mount -F nfs x.x.x.x:/f /mnt
nfs mount: x.x.x.x: : RPC: Program not registered
    nfs mount: retrying: /mnt
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/f /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/f
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/F /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/F
[FYI: S10_106_SOFTWARE is the DVD's label as reported by Windows Explorer.]
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/S10_106_SOFTWARE /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/S10_106_SOFTWARE
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/s10_106_software /mnt

nfs mount: x.x.x.x: : RPC: Program not registered
    nfs mount: retrying: /mnt
    # mount -F hsfs x.x.x.x:/f/s10_106_software /mnt
    mount: No such device
    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/f/s10_106_software

    mount: cannot mount x.x.x.x:/F/S10_106_SOFTWARE
I've also tried mounting it at bootup by adding the appropriate entry in the /etc/vfstab file but, this does not work as well. I've tried Google'ing for an answer to my issue but, I haven't been able to find anything that applies directly to what I'm reporting. It's usually chatter about mounting from one UNIX server to another. Any advice from the community would be greatly appreciated.

After three weeks, you deserve a reply. Windoze does
not natively support NFS.Also deserves a decent answer...
There are two ways to do this:
Install Microsoft's free "Windows Services for UNIX," which includes a Windows NFS server; or
Install the 'sharity' package (google for it); it provides Solaris systems the ability to mount Windows shares

My network printer (HP Officejet Pro L7590) goes "offline" from my HP Pavilion laptop often.  I have to uninstall it and reinstall it in order to print again.  It doesn't happen all of the time but about 90% of the time.

How do it get it back online without having to go through this? Do i need to reinstall a printer driver or update it?  How can I tell if I need to do that?

Hard Drive Failure on HP DV 6000 Pavilion laptop - Need Data Recovery Help
HP Pavilion DV 6108 NR, RG365UA, purchased in late 2006 at Best Buy, with Windows XP, upgraded to Service Pack 3. It has a Fujitsu hard disk, 60 gigabyte, partitioned into C: and a Recovery D:.
Windows tries to boot up, but goes to blue screen with the message: "Unmountable Boot Volume" for one second, then just keeps recycling until I force a shutdown.
BIOS Phoenix, hard drive test result: " #1-08 Fail "
I ran a disk analysis/recovery program on the Cdrive and it seemed to show the directory structure intact, and it was able to recover some files. I was using the free one from Seagate (which only recovers small files). The second pass didn't run so well, and during the third run the program said I should not proceed further, and I should contact a professional disk recovery company.
However, the D drive seems to be intact, so, I wonder if the disk is corrupted or just some aspect of the logical C drive is bad.
How can I get the D: to run the recovery software on it? The recovery disks, made by Best Buy, only proceed to the R / F / Q option screen, and when I press R, I get a blue screen every time.
Tapping the F10 key during startup gets me nowhere. Ditto the F11 key.
I dont care about the hard disk; it is the data (files, docs, images, etc)  that I want.
I contacted HP to order recovery disks but they are no longer available for my computer.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi @goshenguy
Thank you for your inquiry, I am happy to help.
I grasp you tested the hard drive from the bios and it failed.  This tests the physical aspcects of the hard drive and when it fails it does require replacement.  You were able to retrieve some of your files using recovery software but not all.
Your recovery partition is still intact and when you try to do a recovery with the disks from Best Buy you do not get past these options R / F / Q  but will not proceed.
Here is a link to Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows XP, 2006 or Later) that may assist you in performing a recovery.
Here is a link to the Maintenance and Service Guide HP Pavilion dv6000 Notebook PC. Please note chapter 3 page 42 for a replacement hard drive part number.
    HP Parts, HP Replacement Parts
If you are still unable to do the recovery, you could try contacting Best Buy for assistance with the recovery kit they provide.
I don't know if it is possible, but you may want to check cloning software to see if you could clone the D partion to the new drive or connect both drives and  try a drive to drive copy of the D partition.
If you were able to successfully put the D partition on a new hard drive you should be able to do a recovery from the  D partition  to take it back to factory.
If none of the above has allowed you to successfully do a recovery, I suggest contacting Best Buy to see it they have  options other then purchasing  a  third party recovery kit.
    Good Luck!

This will not work. We have not built the native libraries to work with

I suggest trying the platform independent type 4 JDBC driver available for
free from Oracle. It is supported (as is any JDBC driver) with WebLogic

Go to http://www.oracle.com and select the "Download" option.
From the resulting page, use the "Select Utility or Driver" dropdown to
    select Oracle JDBC drivers
From the resulting page, scroll down a little (since SQLJ stuff appears at

  • How to upgrade oracle 32 to 64 bit on sun solaris x86 64 bit OS?

    Hi,
I want to upgrade/convert 32 bit Oracle Database 10.2.0.2 to 64 bit database. Existing 32 bit database is RAC and it is running on Sun Solaris X86 64 bit OS.
First, I want to know is it possible?
If yes, then what are the exact steps?

    Hi,
Such a migration can be done, just follow the steps in Metalink note 62290.1
It is important to remember that 64-bit database requires more shared pool memory so you should increase your shared pool size.

  • How to integrate a Solaris x86 server on Sun Management Center ?

    Hello people,
I want to integrate a Solaris x86 server on Sun Management Center platform.
If I'm not wrong, SunMC doesn't run for Solaris x86, server and client only as console with Java.
In speat of it, I try to install Sun Management Center 3.0 Agent for Solaris x86.
It seems to be ok, install packages, but when execute es-setup script, intents to create the following directory:
    /opt/SUNWsymon/base/bin/sparc-sun-solaris2.8
I supose that in this directory, SunMC will install sparc binary files
At this point, I can't follow the installation and abort it.
Can anybody give me ideas to install and integrate my solaris x86 server on SunMC ?
    Thanks

    Dear Gents,
I have one X86 Solaris Server configured and installed to be Sun Management Center Server.
successfully i could monitor the Sun Solaris Servers after i have installed the SMC agent on them.
my problem is that i could not install the SMC agent on Red Hat Linux. as i could not find an easy document or steps to do so.
could you guide please? If you still have a copy of your SunMC media around, the same ["es-inst"|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-2215/command-line-1?l=en&a=view] program you use to install Solaris Agents should work on Linux as well. It autodetects OS type and will install Solaris packages or RPMs as appropriate.
