*SOLUTION* to (at least some) "HP Scanjet Pro" problems in 10.6

Good day to everyone!
I have found a workaround for the problems experienced by people attempting to use HP Scanjet scanners (at least the 4850, which is what I use, I suspect greatly this will work for others as well).
Basically it is to install the earlier driver posted on HP's bewildering website.
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us &prodNameId=447374&prodTypeId=15179&prodSeriesId=447373&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEn vOID=219
They have a "driver" section above the "software" section that basically contains an earlier version of the Scan Pro software and Universal Driver for it. It's listed for Mac OS 10.3 - 10.4 only, however I can verify that it works correctly on my 10.6 install.
In fact, unbeknown to me, that had actually been the driver I'd been using all along in Mac OS 10.5 (I guess I upgraded when they made the initial universal binary for Mac OS 10.4 and never upgraded from that).
Anyway, for my HP Scanjet 4850, it works fine.

On May of 2011, an update to X.Org was pushed into core that made working with a netbook very difficult. I have an acer with 250gb HDD, 2GB RAM and a 1.6Ghz processor. For all but the most taxing tasks, it it quite snappy. The obvious limitation is the screen. Cue linux. There is a feature of X.Org that allows one to scale the screen upwards, to have a higher virtual resolution. I've used it to artificially upgrade video performance on laptops, desktops, and netbooks for a while. The syntax is as follows: xrandr --output [screen name] --mode [current resolution] --scale [decimal of scaling percentage] --panning [new resolution] For my 1024x600 screen, it is xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1024x600 --scale 1.25x1.25 --panning 1280x750
Arch was for a long time my favorite linux distribution. The update in march made panning not work any more; the mouse becomes trapped within a border the size of the origional screen, situated in the upper left. When this update was pushed through, the arch forums were ablaze with help threads looking for an answer. I was the only one motivated enough to post a bug report. Despite the attention surrounding it, and the fact that it makes netbooks very hard to use, it was flagged as a low priority and ignored by the X.Org package maintainer.
    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/24274
I did some testing to confirm it was not an intel driver update, but indeed the xorg package, and it is. I emailed the package maintainer, submitted a bug report, annoyed some devs on the freenode channel, and basically got referred from one dev to another as they all told me it wasn't their area of expertise and that I should fix it myself. Despite an attempt at teaching myself the entire X.org subsystem, I came up empty handed. The attention died down. I accepted that to use my netbook, I would have to switch distributions. I have been running gentoo with their X.Org updated to the same version and its working fine. It must be some patching done by the arch devs itself that broke it. Yes, this issue is that important to some of us that we will leave arch rather than have our computers crippled. Nowadays, all I hear about it is a tri-weekly comment on the bug report confirming it and asking why it has not been fixed.
Why hasn't it been fixed? I will try to fix it again, if any devs familar with X.Org would be willing to help me. I miss arch. I miss the speed. I miss the simplicity. I miss the adherance to the pilosophy of simplicity. May I ask that the people who maintain the package at least try to fix it?

Sounds as if you try to fix this within the arch community when it is a x.org problem...
Have you tried reporting the bug upstream?

  • Hp scanjet pro 1000 mobile scanner not scanning two sided anymore

i have a hp scanjet pro 1000 mobile scanner.  When i first started using it, it would automatically scan both sides, but now, when i scan i have to scan both sides (when trying to scan checks into my acct.), not sure how to get this back working to scan two sided when i scan in checks into my account, is it the website? i tried to emial them but they offer very little help, i have the java upated, i am not sure how to go about tweaking the settings if that is at all possible . . .

    Hi hhj121970,
I suspect your question would be better answered in the HP Enterprise Business Community,  as the HP Scanjet Pro 1000 Mobile scanner is a commercial model.
My technical expertise is with consumer products and software, I am sure the commercial folks would be happy to help if you re-post your question for them to answer. The HP Enterprise Business Community is an HP Forum designed for the Commercial and Enterprise customers to help one another. I am sure you will find some HP folks there to help too.
Click here to view the Scanners Board. When the page opens you will see the option to 'Log in' or 'Register Now' on the right. The commercial forums are separate from the consumer boards, thus you will need to register if you don't already have a commercial account.
You may find the HP Scanjet Professional 1000 Mobile Scanner supportpage helpful while you wait for somebody in the commercial Forum to respond to your inquiry.
    Best of luck.

  • TX2110us Heat Solution -- Or At Least Hope!

I have been refurbishing a TX2110us I own and when running HWMonitor found that the temperatures were horrid -- not that I hadn't noticed the heat in the machine and around the exhaust outlet.  I searched the web and this site for answers and was disappointed not to find more solutions when so many people have the "heat" problem.
Over a long period of time, my CPUs were running as high as the 90's C. and the GPU running at a minimum of 90 C. and up to 165 C. under load.  Not satisfactory.
After the research, I came to the conclusion that (1) the basic heat sink/cooling fan system was designed poorly and not removing enough heat; and (2) With no fan utility, I can see that the fan runs too slow most of the time given (1).
Since I am a hardware person, I decided to address (1) first.  Using the "Maintenance and Service Guide" found under "Manuals" in the TX2110us info on Support at HP.com, I disassembled the laptop.  (Read the docs and think about it good before you try it -- not impossible, but not a routine job either.)   I found a lot of dust, dirt, etc. in the fan and exhaust ports and cleaned it all thoroughly and reassembled everything.  I gained a few degrees, but not near enough.
Then I saw the report and video from South America where a U. S. penny was used as a spacer/heat sink and that rang a bell.  I saw another where someone used folded tin foil -- ?????.
    (1)  I dissassembled the unit using the HP instructions.
    (2)  I cleaned the old thermal pad off the GPU (I had already cleaned up the CPU and put new thermal compound on it during the first cleanup).
    (3)  I put thermal compound on the nVidia chip and put a fresh, clean penny on it.
    (4)  Then I put compound on the top side of the penny (which was "heads" for good luck -- LOL) to bond it to the main heat sink.
    (5)  I put on the main heat sink, making sure everything was in place, seated and bonded together.
    (6)  Reassembled the laptop.
RESULT:  Before the mod, the GPU has sat there at no load at 90 C. for a week and got 40-50 C. higher under load.  Now it is idling at about 68-70 C. and at full load topping out about 90-91 C.
For now, I call the project a huge success -- only time will tell the longterm effects.
I would still like to find a fan utility where I could set the fan to run about half- to two-thirds speed at moderate load and full speed under heavy load -- which I am convinced would make the unit really cool.
I recognize HP probably would not care for this project, and I can only report what I did and what it did for me.  If you attempt something like it, you are just as much on your own as I was.  Fortunately, if things had gone south I already was out of warranty and the machine is not critical in my setup.
I hope this will spark others to find some better ideas and give HP the idea that these problems can be fixed with a minimum of engineering and a little ingenuity. (A special "real" copper spacer probably would have done even better!)
    Good luck and God Bless!

How do I automatically create bookmarks in adobe using the Scanjet pro 3000 s2?

Does the file you are writing have a timestamp in it?  If so you could read the timestamp from the last time it was written and see if the day has changed, handling the name of the file appropriately.  The easiest way to record the timestamp is probably to write the timestamp as the number of seconds that have elapsed since 12:00 am on Firday January 1st 1904 in UT.  The "Get Date/Time in Seconds" function will give you this value.

  • Macos Lion deletes (at least some of the) keycommands in logic

I installed Macos Lion (10.7) and lost (at least some of the) keycommands in logic
and Final Cut Pro X adds pops and cracks to the audio of my movies.
Quicktime 7 Pro had been deleted from my HD. Do youhave similar experiences,
Any idea how to repair this?

Hi all, I had a hunch about multiple ip-addresses not being handled well by Lion server and so far I was right - knock on wood...
I had duplicated the ethernet connection 5 times to allow me to use multiple IP's on one machine. I think it's called multi-homing... Well amongst other things Lion doesn't seem to be well equiped to handle more than one IPv4 and one IPv6, at least Server Admin doesn't seem to get updated all too well when resetting your hostname via Server.app
I think most problems with Lion Server not being reachable I have had originated from this, but I can't be sure untill the server is stable for about two whole weeks. Note that the server has never been stable before for such a long period of time.

  • I've got a mac pro problem with the starting up, but also a red light on the logic board solidly on. Its not among the diagnostic led. It's located near the BT adapter and the front fans. Also the fans run loud also. any solutions?

    Hi
I've got a mac pro late 2006, and i am having problem with it for quite a while now. the problem i am facing is the start up process, and the red light on the logic board. Earlier I've got the two led on the diagnostic leds 5 and 6 turned on without the diagnostic button being pressed, and i think those are related to the processors overtemp. I've managed to solve that by, removing the processors and re applying the thermal compound on the heatsink. what i have left now with is the red light on  the logic board at the time i plugged in the power. At the same time when this light come on, the power indicator at the front panel come on as well. i am not sure what is this light relates to. We've replace the power supply too, and gone through the SMC reset but seems no help.
Any idea on the problem? I am desperate about it, and i will be greatful if anyone can help..
thanks and hope for your best solutions
    Kari

I can't help directly with your problem but you might check here http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/macpro/ for a service manual which could answer your question.

  • What software do I need to install to play some games MacBook Pro Mid 2014

Hello, what software do I need to install to play some games - MacBook Pro Mid 2014. Games like : Alan Wake, Assassin's Creed, Boarderlands 2, FarCry series, Crysis, etc.

Assassin’s creed II and Borderlands 2 are in the Mac App Store.
The other’s don’t appear to be ported to OS X. You’d have to install Windows in one of the various ways, Bootcamp (native boot) or Virtualization (VMWare, Parallels, VirtualBox). Games under Virtualization probably don’t run well.

  • Solution to common Windows 7 Xfi Elite Pro installation problem

Solution to common Windows 7 Xfi Elite Pro installation problems Hello,? I have just solved what I understand to be a common problem when upgrading a machine with an Xfi Elite Pro from XP to 64 bit Windows 7. Apparently the console control software for the "older" PCI Soundblaster cards for Win7 isn't done yet. If you've installed Win 7, updated the product identification module and run the new driver that you can find easily on Creative's support site and you still have no sound, try going to the Control Panel in windows. Switch the display to the "small icons" option and select "sounds".
Choose the "playback" tab. You should find a list of possible sound output devices that exist on your machine. You need to highlight the Xfi on that list and then click the "Set as default" button at the bottom of the screen. That should do it for you.
    It did it for me.

C The 'solution' you provided only touches a very small fraction of the problems with Creative sound cards. Only very unexperienced users may not control which sound card is choosen by their operating system. Many of us work with PCs for decades, being used to modify the registry and so on. The drivers of Creative are of an unexcusable low quality.

  • Replacement install CD for HP Scanjet Pro 3000 S2 or link to easy scan software?

Hello, I recently upgraded to Windows 10 via clean install and realized that I lost the install CD for HP Scanjet Pro 3000 S2.  The website has downloads for the drivers only - not the HP easy scan software or other bundled software. Where can I download this software and/or order a replacement CD? Thanks

I had same prob and after many frustrating days I solved this prob .  Open front cover and the bottom of the front cover towards the bottom - you will see a white strip of plastic - in the middle of this is a little black finger that gets stuck under the white strip - with a paper clip or a small screw driver - with light pressure pry this little finger back up and red light will be gone.....
    thanks

  • Some kind of technical problems (like slow data processing)...

Some kind of technical problems (like slow data processing) with Leopard appears during the working in the local network.
OS Snow Leopard 10.6 is installed; including all updates, the computer I currently use is Mac Pro. So I have some kind of technical problems (like slow data processing) with Leopard during the working in the local network. (Windows network).
During the attempt to connect with network sharing (the computer is in the network) automounter process took approximately one minute.
Later on, after the automounter process is finished it’s working quite normally over remote computer, but when you try to automount again, everything starts from the very beginning.
The internet is working very well, it’s connected with domain, and everything is adjusted.
I use to ask our system administrator; maybe it is necessary to activate the some kind of protocol?
The OS Tiger is installed on the second hard disk, and it’s working well.
Maybe someone could help me, I try to find the similar problems, but I could not find them.
    Thanks//

    A couple of things.
First, thanks for the tips. I was starting to suspect the network might be an issue (bad nic, bad router, something).
But netstat -s was showing an average of about .15% packet loss. For a web server that seems to be a pretty good value so I'm not sure.
I did, however, ask someone else to look at the server because I'd spent the whole week on just server performance and was going out of my mind. This second pair of eyes really helped as he found that the pagefile for the server was set at 2mb!? Still trying to figure out how that happened. But we increased the pagefile to a much better value. There wasn't an immediate change in performance, but over time the server appears to have begun to respond better.
Occasionally I still get these 'lag spikes' but nowhere near what they were and the delay is much smaller as well, which is probably being caused by something else entirely (like bad programming on my part, hah).

  • Ati 9600 Pro Problem Sloved

Had serious problems getting my Radeon 9600 Pro to work with my MSI 875 Board.
System crashed after 5 seconds of play and sometimes after 10-15 minutes of gameplay. But it never crashed when I was surfing the net or stuff like that.
The solution  for me was Zalman heatpipe cooling for the ATI card and a new 360 watt PSU to replace my old 340 watt PSU. And now my card is stable as ****
I guess the 9600 PRO problem is a PSU problem and if you take a look at the stock fan I think most of you would like to replace that one as well.

I am glad that you fixed the problem ...I also bet that the PSU was a greater factor in the fix ...Good job "RKbauge"!!...Sean REILLY875
