[SOLVED] AMD/ATI Drivers crashing on startx

I ordered parts to build a new HTPC that just arrived today. I built it and got arch up and running without much trouble but I hit a snag when I started trying to get X up and running (isn't this always when things seems to go wrong? lol) The board has an AMD E350 with Radeon HD 6310 graphics and from things I've read around the web, I'm going to need proprietary drivers to get good smooth HD playback. I followed instructions on the ATI Catalyst page of the Arch Wiki and added
[catalyst]
Server = http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/repo/catalyst/$arch
to my /etc/pacman.conf file then installed all the drivers through pacman. Now when I run startx i get
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0@0:1:1) found

but as long as my .xinitrc file has something like
exec xterm
it will still run. However when i try running xbmc by changing .xinitrc to
exec xbmc
it crashes with all the same error message above with the addition of

XBMC needs hardware accelerated OpenGL rendering.
Install an appropriate graphics driver.
Please consult XBMC Wiki for supported hardware

I did a quick Google and also searched on the forum but didn't see anything relevant to my card so I was wondering if anyone else could point me in the right direction.
Thanks

I actually hadn't done either. I just did both and rebooted and xbmc opened no problem! thanks. I didn't know I needed to manually add flgrx to the rc.conf file.
Also what exactly does adding "nomodset" to grub do?
Also running startx still gives me this:

  • AMD/ATI Drivers: Cannot startx / startxfce4 [SOLVED]

    Hi, so basically I followed the instructions at the official ArchWiki to install the drivers for my AMD 270X, and everything was working fine.  I was having some hardware troubles, long story short I ended up moving the card from one PCIE slot to the other.  After that I started having problems.  I now cannot startx, and cannot get any graphical login or anything of that nature.  *Note* - the card itself is working, and runs fine in my windows partition (I am dual-booting). Anyway, any help would be nice, I'm a little stuck at the moment. Thanks!
    fglrx module is loaded.
    nomodeset is added to kernel parameters at boot.
    I tried doing a complete uninstall/reinstall of the drivers as per the wiki with a "pacman -Rdd catalyst-utils lib32-catalyst-utils", as well as trying again manually uninstalling each package. I made sure to remove the fglrx module as well.

  • Issue with AMD/ATI 11-3 driver and Photoshop on Windows.

    The latest AMD/ATI drivers for Radeon HD cards (4xxx, 5xxx, and 6xxx series), 11-3, breaks Normal and Advanced OpenGL modes in Photoshop on Windows.
    Note that this does not occur with 11-1 or 11-2 drivers on the same system. We recommend you stick with 11-1 or 11-2 until this problem is addressed.
    We're working with AMD on the issue and there should be a driver update very soon.

    Any idea what went wrong, specifically (asking as an OpenGL-based Photoshop plug-in software developer)?

  • Downgraded ATI drivers but cannot find Kernel version

    After a recent upgrade to kernel 2.6.39 and ATI catalyst 1.6 drivers, I am getting worse performance.
    I have downgraded catalyst-utils to 11.4 but cannot downgrade the catalyst driver to 11.4 as it requires a
    kernel <2.6.39
    [root@orac boot]# pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/catalyst-11.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
    warning: downgrading package catalyst (11.6-1 => 11.4-1)
    resolving dependencies...
    warning: cannot resolve "kernel26<2.6.39", a dependency of "catalyst"
    :: The following package cannot be upgraded due to unresolvable dependencies:
          catalyst
    Do you want to skip the above package for this upgrade? [y/N]
    error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: catalyst: requires kernel26<2.6.39
    My problem is I dont know how to find the Arch 2-6.38.4 kernel (or previous version).
    The kernel name always appears as kernel26, so how do I find a particular version?
    I have the old 2.6.38 modules in /lib/modules
    [root@orac pkg]# ls /lib/modules/
    2.6.38-ARCH  2.6.39-ARCH  fglrx  fglrxold
    but do not have 2.6.38-ARCH in /var/cache/pacman/pkg
    Thanks in advance

    I use Catalyst 11.4 with kernel 2.6.39, but instead of catalyst I use catalyst-hook to build the fglrx module after kernel updates and it works perfectly.
    $ uname -sr
    Linux 2.6.39-ARCH
    $ pacman -Qs catalyst
    local/catalyst-hook 11.4-1 [3.15 MB]
    AMD/ATI drivers. Auto re-compile the fglrx module when kernel update
    (mkinitcpio's hook)
    local/catalyst-utils 11.4-1 [70.30 MB]
    AMD/ATI Catalyst drivers utilities and libraries.

  • G565 refuses to install latest ATI Drivers :(

    My G565 have the integrated Radeon HD 4270 graphics accelerator.
    I use EXACTLY the correct drivers from AMD by selecting the driver from this page:
    http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx
    For some reason it does install the new Catalyst Control Center just fine, however it wont install the new display driver, it stays at the old 8.760.0.0 from 2010-07-19... I've even ran driversweeper and done complete uninstalls...
    Why does it refuse to install?? Are we reallly stuck at using the latest driver from Lenovo which is outdated???

    I want the greatly improved catalyst control center + some performance improvements and fixes.
    One is that graphics acceleration in FF is improved, also apparently  sometimes FF4-5.x caused the GPU to run very hot in earlier driver releases.
    I would have hoped for some serious help here  but I guess I have to find some registry hack or another way to install new AMD/ATI drivers from now on...
    Lenove must've blocked it from completely installing... I can't see why since it's just the pretty common HD 4270 (4200 series) onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip in the RS880M Chipset!!
    FULLY supported by the drivers from AMD!

  • AT2020 Not Working & AMD Display Driver Crash

    My AMD display drivers crash every time I try to start a skype call. I have the newest beta build, what driver version should I use? (I have the r7 260x)
    Another issue I have is that if I have a call that does work, my AT2020 will not have sound input for skype. It works perfectly fine with other programs and windows. (I use an AT2020 XLR and a PreSonus Audiobox USB)
    I just want to record games and talk to friends. Please help!

    If you use beta builds of drivers (If I understand you correctly), you should expect crashes and incompabilities. For general stabillity, the latest WHQL driver should normally be the best bet (not allways offcourse).
    You can allways run a dxdiag and post it here, Winkey + r > dxdiag, save it and zip it (rightclick > send to ziped folder), and post the zip version, there might be other issues.

  • AMD/ATI to open-source their drivers?

    AMD/ATI is considering opensourcing their proprietary graphics drivers:
    http://osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=15446
    Let's hope that this happens and that nvidia follows!

    while (nVidiaRoxorzMuhBoxors)
    if (AMD += ATi)
    self.state = DONT_CARE;
    Not spoken by the words of a fanboi but merely by the words of a very satisfied customer that has owned nVidia cards from the TNT2 through 6800GS (the 7900GTX makes me salivate and the 8000 series will probably make me salivate even more, although many are predicting it to be like the FX line)
    If this purchase makes ATi (now AMD through the terms of the purchase) suddenly make cards that just smear nVidia across the floor I may switch, but I am not one of those who make their decision solely on those few FPS differences.

  • [SOLVED]Are X11 and AMD catalyst drivers friends again?

    last time i installed linux on my laptop X11 had dropped support fro amd catalyst drivers (proprietary video card drivers), did amd do something about it? did X11 team reconsider? can i use the catalyst drivers on X11 again now?  my laptop and it's stupid APU or "dual graphics" aren't playing so nice with the open source radeon drivers.
    Last edited by rabcor (2013-06-20 19:16:00)

    If wine supported skype, i would be more dead set on using linux than using the amd proprietary drivers.
    The reason this isn't a big deal to me is mostly because i only use this laptop for 3 things, regardless of OS. Teamspeak 3, Skype, Playing Videos.
    I have it set up on a dual boot because neither windows nor linux seem to be reliable on this laptop, the reason is hardware-side, this APU is driving me nuts.
    The reason i'm having problems with the radeon drivers is that even if i set my computer to disable the "switchable graphics" on boot it sometimes seems to randomly re-enable it without even notifying me. The reason this is bad is because the switchable graphics cause my laptopt to overheat. If this happens in windows it usually just enters hibernation mode while the heat levels are just barely critical, in linux however it keeps running for a while at critical levels before it'll finally just overeat. I'm hoping that the AMD proprietary drivers can help me solve this on the linux side.
    Whichever operating system i can manage to make stop ever using the switchable graphics (thus preventing all overheating) will be the one i will use in the end, but i'm not in any big rush, windows is working decently for me on the laptop right now, and i can patiently wait for the amd proprietary drivers to support X again, since i  don't interact much with the computer at all anyways. Using linux would mostly just be to make the laptop look better. Linux seems to be the more likely one to succeed with this task in the end however (because i can optimize/customize it a whole lot more than i ever could windows, and because i'm scared of updating the catalyst drivers in windows because my laptop has often just completely broken upon catalyst driver update in windows.)

    You need to contact AMD directly to advise them of the problem.  AMD has sole responsibility for the publication of the hardware drivers for their products.  Microsoft does not write hardware drivers for any third party hardware.  Drivers
    supplied by Windows update are supplied by the original publisher to Microsoft who in turn distributes the drivers via Windows Update.
    So, it is your responsibility to report the problem directly to AMD for the ultimate resolution.

  • ATI drivers, games are crashing

    Hi,
    I've got a new 24" iMac and i've got a problem
    with the ATI drivers.
    Bootcamp1.4/2.0-drivers haven't worked at all,
    Games like Enemy Territory: Quake Wars couldn't
    start "The current video card / driver combination does not support the necessary features: GLARB_occlusionquery"
    then i tried official(mobility modded) and omega drivers,
    "Doesn't support wglChoosePixelFormatARB".
    Then i tried this instructions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5659265#5659265
    http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1017&message=24987376
    and Quake Wars started. I was even able to play Half-Life1-based games like
    Team Fortress Classic.
    But now there is another problem, my games are crashing after an indefinite amount of time.
    I played ET:QW and it crashed after ~10 minutes, i played Team Fortress 2 and
    it crashed after ~7 minutes, Portal even crashed after ~3 minutes.
    What to do now, i just reinstalled Windows 2 days ago,
    so don't force me to do it again.
    Thanks,
    myuu
    PS: I downloaded Bootcamp 2.0-drivers through torrent,
    so don't wonder, even if i use OSX Tiger at the moment.

    I tried installing omega drivers the same way
    but it still crashes after some minutes.

  • [SOLVED] Custom kernel 2.6.17 + ATI drivers

    Hi,
    I'm trying to get DRI, but can't load fglrx. I've read
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … om_Kernels and
    http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers
    and done everything like in those howtos. If I set Driver "fglrx" X won't work. So I've made new kernel with some additional modules:
    Device Drivers -->
    Graphics support -->
    <M> Support for frame buffer devices
    <*> Enable firmware EDID
    <M> ATI Radeon display support
    [*] ODC/I2C for ATI Radeon support
    [*] Blacklight & LCD device support --> ...
    but the problem is still the same.
    Here's some of my configs.

    I'm using xorg 11R7.0-1, ati-fglrx-utils 8.27.10-3, and my own package  ati-fglrx-kickass 8.28.8-1

    As mouse may have noticed, from the log:
    # (EE) fglrx(0): [agp] unable to acquire AGP, error "xf86_ENODEV"
    # (EE) fglrx(0): cannot init AGP
    # (II) fglrx(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
    # (II) fglrx(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0x2000 at 0xb7710000
    # (WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
    # (WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed! *
    # (WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
    # (WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) *
    # (WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available *
    # (WW) fglrx(0): ********************************************* *
    That's your problem.  Ensure you have both agp drivers loaded - there's agpgart and your board-specific drivers too.  They both need to be loaded _before_ the fglrx kernel module.
    To figure out which modules they are, run lsmod | grep agp and put both of them into the /etc/rc.conf MODULES array, before fglrx.  If fglrx isn't in that array, put it there too, after the agp modules.
    -=edit=- as for the aiglx thing, don't worry about it.  It's harmless - I get the same message in my logs and everything works fine. -=/edit=-

  • Ati drivers frustration(Radeon HD) Help please[Solved]

    Hey I've been having a few problems regarding the ati drivers in arch linux. I'm rally happy with the performance and quality of the free driver which I found WAY better than the proprietary driver except for one thing(which is driving me insane): The free driver does not regulate the video card's fan speed--at least--by default. Is there a way to make my fan hush up? The proprietary driver does a good job at this but I would prefer to continue to use the much better free driver.

    On the wiki page you gave me it gives me two choices:
    1. Try adding radeon.dynpm=1 to the kernel parameters (if using the stock kernel < 2.6.35). If you are using kernel26>=2.6.35 this option is no longer needed and the sysfs interface will be present by default. If this option is passed to a kernel >= 2.6.35, the driver will fail and fall back to software rendering.
    2. Use the (unsupported) [radeon] repo:
    So I tried the first option first. Result: X wouldn't even start and it dropped me into console mode without even bringing me to kdm first.
    After that I went and chaged grub back to the way it was before and X was able to load again.
    So then I tried the second option. I added the radeon repo to the list and I also snuck a peak at it in my browser. Result: I got a 404 error from the repo.
    Am I doing something wrong? Maybe just a stupid mistake?

  • Black screen on resume from sleep using open source AMD/ATI driver

    When waking from sleep using systemctl suspend or pm-suspend , I am presented with a black screen. I can still open programs, type, etc. but cannot see what I am doing. I usually just wind up rebooting from whatever terminal I had open, but again I can't see what I am typing. Upon reboot, the screen starts back up again. Everything else seems to resume from sleep just fine, it's just the screen that won't turn back on.
    I came from Ubuntu and had this same problem there. However, I only had this problem when using the open source xf86-video driver; when using the proprietary drivers, I was able to suspend/resume just fine. So it seems this problem is specific to the open source drivers.
    If I'm using an external monitor, my external monitor will resume just fine after waking from sleep, but the laptop screen will not.
    Googling around shows this is a common problem with AMD/ATI cards, and after a lot of attempts and failures I'm interested in knowing if anyone else has solved this problem.
    What I've tried so far (without success):
    -various quirks included with pm-utils to turn on dpms after resume
    -xrandr after resumption from sleep
    ==xrandr --output LVDS --off (If used without suspending (so while the screen still works) this seems to crash Gnome the first time around, but Gnome automatically restarts. If used a second time, it completely blanks the screen and requires a reboot)
    ==xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1600x900
    -xset dpms force on or xset dpms force off after resumption from sleep
    -vbetool dpms off and vbetool dpms on results in error message "Real mode call failed"
    -scripts using vbetool or xrandr when resuming from sleep
    -switching between virtual consoles and gnome using alt-ctrl-fn-f1 and alt-ctrl-fn-f2 keys
    My setup:
    -HP Envy dv7
    -UEFI dual-boot with Windows 8
    -AMD Radeon HD 7640G
    -xf86-video-ati 1:7.2.0-1 driver
    -Gnome DE using GDM login manager
    Thank you.
    EDIT: I did try using the proprietary drivers for a time, but found I couldn't adjust my brightness. At first I thought working suspension > adjustable brightness, but I quickly changed my mind after one night of trying to work on an unadjustable maximally bright screen.

    Unfortunately I could not fix the problem so I wiped my system and loaded all new drivers before I found this posting.
    Is there a way to get the old ATI driver that works? The only one available on the ATI and Lenovo website is the latest one with the problem. I agree with you David, Lenovo should have fixed this problem already with ATI.
