[solved] Arch freezes before login

Hello there,
today I restarted my computer after about 4 days uptime to clean the dust and reconnect my DVD derive. For this I removed my radeon graphics card and a usb device I didn't need.
After cleaning and reconnecting everything I tried to start my computer. My BIOS didn't let me and told me that my hard disk drive was failing and I should back it up and insert a 'proper' boot medium. I didn't really believe it because not so a long time ago I checked this device and it was completly fine. I disconnected the DVD drive and indeed my BIOS let me pass without any trouble.
But now Arch boots to the login shell and just freezes. I only get enough time to enter the first few letters of my username. Before the boot screen clears for the login screen I always get a glance on a error about my graphics card (a radeon hd 6850, I use the radeon driver) and another device and that they are initialized in a generic mode or something. Couldn't find anything in the logs about that.
Here are they and I hope someone is able to help:

Hm, dis- and reconnecting the graphics card solved the problem. Did this because I figured a hardware problem after freezes in three different live systems.

• Upgraded MacBookPro6,2 to Lion and now computer freezes before login

Hi everyone,
As the subjed line says, I upgraded to Lion and everything smoothly (aparently), but after I tried to install Xcode for Lion the pc started getting slower and slower. The 10.7 Core libraries never installed (kept failing) and now the computer freezes before I can login. I tried to reinstall Lion (Pressing ⌘+R after hard powerdown) and following the prompts, but that failed. No reasons why, it just said user cancelled.
Before I wipe out my hard drive, is there something else I can do? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

I am typing this reply from my MacBook Pro after recovering from the problem above. This post is for anyone else who might have the same problem. These are the steps to follow to be able to log back in:
Power down the computer and then press ⌘+R while powering up. This is called Lion Recovery, according to this knowledge base article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
In the options presented, select Disk Utility and verify the hard drive (HD) and repair the permissions on it. If your HD is not OK after verifying it, you will need to repair the HD as well.
Once the step above is complete, restart the computer.
Log in as normal.
Once you log in, it is important to find and solve whatever is causing the freeze.
In my case, it was a botched Xcode installation. If you do not fix the problem, the computer will freeze again next time you restart it, so make sure you check everything and uninstall anything that you may have installed recently. Some Adobe applications have known issues as of this posting (July 2011), so definitely remove anything new from Adobe you may have installed after upgrading to Lion or in the last couple of weeks.
Final note: If you cannot find the problem and your computer freezes again the next time you restart, you can regain access to it by following the steps above. Follow them, log in and make a backup of your important stuff and either go back to Leopard or contact Apple support for further instructions.
Good luck!

• Windows XP Machine Freeze before Login Screen 2015

Has there been any Windows updates applied recently that may be causing this? Has any new hardware been added to them? A virus seems unlikely but not impossible. How old are the machines and how many is this happening to?
When you get to System Restore, what is the last checkpoint showing as having a Restore point created for? It is quite likely that that event is causing this
You really need to look at getting off XP - it is out of support and is going to have more and more of these problems

Hi All,
Suddenly all machines running Windows XP just freezes before the login screen comes.
Windows boots up. Showing the LOGO but just before the login screen comes it just freezes.
I have performed system restore some restore and boots up but some does not restore.
On Some of the computers that have been restored successfully, this problem has reoccured. The are instance where we have formatted a machine completely, but after a while this problem reoccurs.
I am suspecting a virus but not totally sure.
Can anyone help

• Freezing before login

I am having an issue with multiple user login. When I enable multiple users, on startup, before the multiple users screen loads, os9 freezes and the four-finger-salute will not respond. eventually (around 20-30 minutes) the user log in appears. i was wondering if there is a way to keep this from happening and i can enable the MUA again.

Does it work perfectly well without MU, and does it work fine once you've got through the 20-30 minutes, please? Also, "20-30" minutes is a huge difference. Does it really vary that much?
Either way, does it make any difference if you Rebuild the Desktop? (restart the computer while holding down the Command-Option keys)
Merry Christmas

• Startup issue - blue screen freeze before login - Safe Boot works fine?

I've not seen this before and I can't fix, wonder if anyone has any new suggestions, here is what I've tried so far... (safe boot works fine)
1. Verbose and Single user login
2. removing the startup folder from disk library
3. Zapping PRAM
4. Reset SMC
5. Zeroed disk and reinstalled system
6. Target disk and disk repair (No Problems Found)
7. Permissions repair (No Problems Found
8. Apple Hardware Test (No Problems Found)
9. System DVD Startup - Disk Utility (No Problems Found)
10. Network Startup - Disk Utility (No Problems Found)
In every case unless I hold the shift key down for safe boot, the mac will freeze on a blue screen when the grey screen disappears, and never proceed to login. Thought about replacing the disk but it's a lot of bother on these machines and there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with it??
Any ideas?
Can anyone think of a possible fix not listed above?

Hello chip
The only thing I see missing from your list is, have you disconnected all External HD's, iPods and other storage devices befor Starting up? Sometimes when the iMac has multiple storage devices connected the Startup Manager will get lost.
Also try going to: Startup Manager in System Preferences, select the Macintosh HD and restart the iMac..

• [SOLVED] Steam freezes at login

When I open Steam, I put my login information, sometimes it tries to connect, then freezes. But most times, it freezes after I put my login information and press enter. I'm using Cinnamon maybe it has something to do with this.
I'm not using the hack, I was officially invited. I thought at first I had deleted some needed file or something so I reinstalled a fresh Arch, It is still the same. I will quickly post any information needed. Thanks for the help.

• [SOLVED] Arch freezes after mounting drives, cannot boot

Installed Arch maybe a week ago, and everything worked flawlessly until i rebooted today.
I havent done any major changes during that session that i recall, and after a reboot, my arch "froze" mid boot, after (what i think is) mounting drives (sda3 is OS, sda5 is Data):
/dev/sda3: clean, 168249/2298240 files, 1485743/9175040 blocks

systemd-fsck[248]: /dev/sda5: clean, 5230/3932656 files, 475548/15729635 blocks
This is all the info that i get.
If i remember right, this was shown when arch was booting up normally too, but it ussualy just hanged for a second or two at it. I've tried leaving it for almost half an hour now, and it didnt budge.
And it doesnt actually freeze, since there is a blinking " | " after the last line (no input is being accepted though)
This might be something stupidly simple, but im completely new to Arch (and linux in general)
I do have a live cd though, so if there's any conf that you think would help, i can get it.

• Windows 7 on Mac Freeze before login.

Hello!
I recently purchased a macbook pro retina, mainly for music production but also for some other stuff.
Now the thing is that the music production software that i'm using, does only work with pc. So i decided to
bootcamp my mac so that i can use it as a pc.
So far everything has gone as planned. I can now operate windows 7 on my mac and the Music Software (FL Studio 10)
works as a charm.
It was just recently when i tried to install my external Sound drive (Audiobox USB) that i was experiencing some problems
with the audio. So i googled about the issue and somewhere i read that it could possibly have to do with the USB drivers being out of date.
So i checked the device manager to see the who the developer of the usb drive is (to find updates) ect.
Now when i've found the updates, i try to uninstall the previous USB devices that i have so that i can install the new ones. But somewhere in between
uninstalling and installing the new drivers, the computer suddenly freezes. I try to reboot normally and in safe mode, but when i come to the
windows log in screen, i can't type or move my mouse.
I'm not very bright when it comes to computers (especially macs), but after giving it some thought i think that i might have caused an error
since i kinda forgot i was operating on a macbook and not Pc. I mean, when using bootcamp you get the "apple drivers for windows" download
and that's probably where i should have gone in the first place, to look for updates. Now instead i have tried to manually take away the usb drivers and install the
updates from Intels website.
Is there a way to solve this without having to start over and uninstall/install bootcamp from scratch?
Best regards
Fidelix

You seem to have accidentally uninstalled the BC USB drivers.
The simplest method is to use a wired keyboard/mouse and download BC drivers from System requirements to install Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp - Apple Support and Boot Camp: Install or repair Boot Camp drivers which will restore all your USB drivers except the AudioBox driver.
Find the correct ones for AudioBox and install them in addition to what you already have.

• [SOLVED] Arch freezes after scanning LVM VGs at boot

Hi there,
recently ArchLinux started printing some udev errors at boot. After an update the system freezes at startup after detecting the LVM volume groups (3 lvm volumes found in volume group "Laptop" or something similar).

Exactly same problem here. today's update has freezed my Arch linux and it gets stuck after detecting the LVM groups (5 lvm volumes found in volume group data in my case).
Just run a "pacman -Syu" and restarted system today 30/04/2012.
thanks in advance

• Macbook pro freezes after login

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15" with a Core i7 2.66GHz processor. Sometime after upgrading to Lion, I started getting the spinning beachball of death just after login. Unlike many posts about freezes on similar MacBook Pros, mine is not freezing before login, but after. I start the machine, login, and then if I try to open any application, the beachball appears and I have to do a hard shutdown with the power button. Then if I restart again, it is usually fine. I was able to fix this problem some time ago by deleting a preference file (plist) for one of my apps (I think), but the problem has surfaced again and I cannot remember how to correct this. Anyone having similar problems, please let me know if you've had any luck fixing it. I am running 10.7.3 (in fact, it seems like the problem may have resurfaced just after the update to 10.7.3, but I'm not sure.)
FYI, I have auto graphics switching off and am still experiencing this problem.

Don't worry about the auto graphics switching. Go to "Users & Groups" in system preferences. Then click on login items and removes all of them. I haven't pinned down exactly which one was causing the problem but I suspect it was one associated with my HP printer. I have verified that Dropbox and Magic Menu from StuffIt are OK to leave in the login items. Just remove what you have there and add them back in one at time (if you can't live without them) until it starts to give you trouble again. Let me know if this helps.

• [SOLVED] Help! Arch freezes on boot

I was looking for a login manager today, after trying out qingy and uninstalling it, I rolled back the changes I made to inittab and rebooted.
And then while booting arch freezes after daemon start, after some time it says:
INIT: Id "c1" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "c2" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "c3" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

INIT: Id "c6" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: no more processes left in this rumlevel
I assume it is connected with my inittab setup cause on live cd I watched logs in errors.log and saw this:

• Arch freezes after about 10 minutes with new kernel [SOLVED]

As the title says: Arch freezes after about 10 minutes with new kernel (2.6.27). I can only move a mouse, but everything else is frozen. Even restarting X doesn't do a trick. It doesn't work at all. Frozen.
I don't get any kind of error message (oh really?), so what's the problem..?

Yeah... I'm using nvidia... So the problem is nvidia drivers, not the Linux kernel?
Edit: My card is nVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra. I can't get driver information now, because I'm using WinXP right now. I'll check it later.
Did you make a new install or just updated?
You can try to reinstall old kernel with:
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel(version you want).pkg.tar.gz
if you made a new install you may have to install the xorg keyboard driver and so.
By the way, there are a few diferent packages for nvidia drivers. Check wich is yours.
Also check /var/log/ folder for errors.
Updated kernel.
And as I said, I'll check the driver later.

• Gnome/GDM Issue - System freeze before starting Gnome every reboot.

Hi guys, sorry for my bad english.
I've a strange problem with Gnome/GDM DE.
Yesterday, I have installed gnome on my laptop but it works 1 times every 2.
The first time i power on my laptop it works, the second (or if i try to reboot) it freezes before starting GDM.
I can't switch tty, can't shutdown. I can only power off pressing power button.
How can i solve this problem? Anyone had this issue before?
PS: (I've installed arch yet on the same laptop using XFCE without problems)

• Screen Sharing via iCloud on Lion Freezes at Login Screen

After updating to OSX Lion 10.7.3, screen sharing between two computers via the Internet allows me to connect to the remote computer and see the remote user's login screen, but as soon as I click on a user to login, the screen share image freezes before I can enter the user password.
Using iCloud Back to My Mac because all machines have the same Apple ID & password. Exact same setup worked before the 10.7.3 upgrade, but it could be coincidence.
Details:
Can see the remote computers in my finder,
Can click on them and connect successfully using either the Apple ID or the name and password a user that is allowed under Sharing -> Screen Sharing,
When clicking on "Screen Share," the computers connect and I'm prompted to either "Ask to Share the Display" or "Connect to Virtual Display"Since there really isn't anyone using the computer, I select "Connect to Virtual Display"
After clicking "Connect to Virtual Display" the Screen Sharing window shows the remote computer's login screen, whcih shows the user names, their icons and "Sleep" "Restart" or "Shut Down" on the bottom of the screen. One user has an orange circle with a white checkmark next to it.
Previously, I could click a user's name or icon, enter the password and control the remote Mac. Now, not amount of clicking works.
Have tried disconnecting and reconnecting as different users or using Apple ID without changes in the perofmance. Have restarted both machines.
Any help?

I'm having the same problem screen sharing to a Lion 10.7.3 machine, I get this message.
However, it works just like it used to when I screen share from a 10.7.3 machine to another Mac running 10.6.8.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

• User Exit BEFORE Login

Hi experts,
I have a problem:
We use differerent solutions for Web Access for externals - Web Dynpro and a normal GUI, shown via WEBGUI.
So we create a new user (SU01) for the external and he can access the system
But this problem may appear:
The external tries to login via OPERATOR, DDIC, SAP*,... and lock this user - system will hang up!
Solution can be a user exit BEFORE login, so we can check the user name (OPERATOR...) and don't authorize for login.
Is there a user exit? I know the exit EXIT_SAPLSUSF_001 - bt this one is too late (after login).
Also it would be important to know if the login is via SAPGUI oder via WEBGUI/Webdynpro (in EXIT_SAPLSUSF_001)
Any ideas on this?

Hi,
why don't you unlock the User?
Try this:
data: wa_return type table of BAPIRET2.
If sy-uname = 'OPERATOR'
CALL FUNCTION 'BAPI_USER_UNLOCK'
EXPORTING
USERNAME       = sy-uname
TABLES
RETURN         = WA_return.
CALL 'SYST_LOGOFF'
endif.
Hmmm...I will try this. But I'm not sure if I will reach this point if I try to login with the wrong password?!
Edit: I tried to logon with a wrong password (before i created a hardcoded Breakpoint in the user exit). But I won't reach this point.
So the question is not solved. If someone tries to logon as Operator several times, user Operater will be locked. How to prevent to log on via specific users (like Operator, DDIC...) in the Webgui?
