(SOLVED) browse repos?

Hi everyone,
I have found the AUR is easy to search online, but how does one browse the packages available in the others?  Is there a website or some command to enter to see a list of new/popular packages available?  Sorry for what may be a very simple question, but I'm slightly annoyed at the interwebs for not finding me an answer.... Thanks!
Cheers!

  • [SOLVED] Browser cannot display the full character set

Characters from some languages like persian, vietnames, japanese, chinese are not displayed in my browsers (I have chromium and firefox installed). The browser just displays little squares. However I don't think it is a problem with the browser but the x installation. I think I have all basic fonts installed.
In my x-installation I have the following fonts installed (These are all fonts I could find via 'pacman -Ss xorg-font').
    extra/font-misc-ethiopic 1.0.3-1 (xorg xorg-fonts) [installed]
    X.org Misc Ethiopic fonts
    extra/xorg-font-util 1.3.0-2 (xorg-fonts xorg) [installed]
    X.Org font utilities
    extra/xorg-font-utils 7.6-4 [installed]

    extra/xorg-fonts-100dpi 1.0.1-5 (xorg) [installed]
    X.org 100dpi fonts
    extra/xorg-fonts-75dpi 1.0.3-1 (xorg) [installed]
    X.org 75dpi fonts
    extra/xorg-fonts-alias 1.0.3-1 [installed]

    extra/xorg-fonts-cyrillic 1.0.1-4
    X.org cyrillic fonts

Can anybody give me a hint on how to diagnose the problem.

  • [SOLVED] custom repo e new pacman

I just updated pacman, and I noticed that when syncing the repos the progress bar for my local repo isn't displayed anymore as well as the "repo is up to date" message when no new version is detected.
Anyway, the local repo is updated just fine, since I can install the new packages added. Something is changed maybe in the config file syntax? I couldn't find anything.

Yeah, different bug.  There is a patch in the git repo if you really can't wait for the fix: http://projects.archlinux.org/?p=pacman … h=4476598e

    @ppsalama:
Your question about exploits and hijacking brings up an interesting issue.  Most people think about security in a backwards way.  Every browser has a zillion exploits in its history, many of which are patched, but at any one time there are both known and unknown unpatched exploit vulnerabilities in the wild.  Using software with such vulnerabilities is a little like knowing that the road is absolutely infested with bloodthirty banditos, along every curve and narrow spot, but taking the horse and buggy through the pass every day in spite of knowing about those ugly characters.  Instead, one should be taking the train (or the jet plane) - and not take the bad road at all.  The bad road is the unencrypted one.  Theoretically, an encrypted connection completely isolates your channel so that banditos cannot get into it (because you're flying way high up over their heads).
This works under three conditions: 1) Your cipher text cannot be broken on the fly.  2) Your authentication works (certificates), and you have no fuel leaks that cause you to crash in the desert.  The fuel leaks are the unencrypted side channels (http) branching from  a site that connects to you with https on the main page. (This mix of https/http is called mixed content=BAD).
Unfortunately, the cipher suites that are typically used by default after https handshakes are often broken (easily) "on the fly."  This is because of the way server private keys have gotten into the wild.  The use of ephemeral keys alleviates this issue in all but the most targeted attacks, assuming the actual data encryption is also up to snuff.  Most ssl stack/browser combinations do not end up selecting a cipher suite that utilizes ephemeral keys (called DHE* cipher suites, or suites that use the diffie helman ephemeral key exchange mechanism).  However; this can be remedied by modifying your ssl stack + browser to supply ONLY DHE* cipher suites in the preferences list sent to the server, and to allow only DHE cipher suites in the final connection produced after the handshake.
The fact that DHE* is not uniformly being used is one of the reasons the internet is broken, along with certificates, mixed content, and invasive proxies.  Call your congressman.
Now, the good news:  This site (bbs.archlinux.org) accepts DHE* cipher suites if your browser puts them in the preferences list!  So, archlinux.org is one of VERY few sites that I feel comfortable visiting (Of course I have made the modifications to my ssl and browser).  This is a pretty important issue.  You should study it, or ask a techie friend about it.  Sometimes the key mechanism is referred to as a PFS (perfect forward secrecy) mechanism, if you want more buzzwords.  Sorry for such a long first post.
(See disclaimer in next message (below)).

uzbl is great, you should try it out (yaourt -S uzbl-git).  Lightweight, renders flawlessly, and keyboard controlled (although you can use the mouse too if you want).  No flash player required, and I imagine if a text browser is an option (it isn't for me) then you must be willing to put up with broken support for opening new windows via Javascript.

  • [SOLVED] community repo: no bug report?

Hi guys, found a minor bug in a package from community repo. Tried to post it to the bugtracker and realized that it is impossible  to mark "package: community" category. Why? And how I'm supposed to deal with this?

  • [solved] local repo not listed during -Sy

So the loal repo "[myrepo]" is defined in pacman.conf:
    $ cat /etc/pacman.conf | grep -A1 myrepo
    [myrepo]
    Server = file:///home/filip/pkg/64bit
But when I do pacman -Sy or -Syy, pacman output looks like this:
    $ pacman -Syy
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    testing 24.7K 424.3K/s 00:00:00 [###################################################] 100%
    core 31.4K 451.0K/s 00:00:00 [###################################################] 100%
    extra 396.6K 238.3K/s 00:00:02 [###################################################] 100%
    community 354.0K 489.2K/s 00:00:01 [###################################################] 100%
The local repo is not listed among the repos that are refreshed, but it does appear to be refreshed, because when I search for a package in this repo I can find it without any problems:
    $ pacman -Ss exo
    extra/exo 0.3.4-2 (xfce4)
    Extensions to Xfce by os-cillation
    myrepo/exo 0.3.4-2 (xfce4)
    Extensions to Xfce by os-cillation
Is this a bug in pacman 3.2?  A feature?  A problem on my system?  Can someone confirm before I file a bug report?
Last edited by fwojciec (2008-08-18 19:09:19)

It was an "incomplete feature" of 3.2 which will be dropped in 3.2.1 :

  • [SOLVED] Browser in Xwayland unresponsive (incl. video)

I use Wayland with Xwayland and Weston and run X11 applications from an Xserver that is running in Wayland/Weston. This currently includes my browsers, Firefox and Chromium, as the currently cannot run natively on Wayland/Weston to my knowledge. The problem is that klicking on any menu item will not have any effect. E.g. in Chromium no new tab will be opened when I klick on New Tab. In general no menu item has any kind of effect. I tried issuing
    export GDK_BACKEND=wayland
to no avail. The problem affects both of my browsers, Firefox and Chromium. Other apps do not show this kind of behaviour. Can somebody provide an explanation and preferably a solution?

The solution can be found here and for now consists in applying a patch to the weston package in abs:

  • Browser Compatability Hell.

    Hi There
Does anyone out there know how to solve browser compatibility issues in sites built in Dreamweaver. My site works perfectly in all browsers except IE 8, in which case the table looks like its exploding when the site loads. I have tried running that line of code fixer and I cannot get it to work. This is driving me absolutely insane. Does anyone out there know anything about this?

Please don't email anything. I cannot guarantee a personal response.
Posting a link here is quite common and nothing to be embarrassed about (assuming you're only referring to the browser compatibility issue, that is).

  • RH HTML v9.0.2: Supported Version of Word Does Not Exist Error

    Hello,
    I am running RoboHelp HTML v 9.0.2.271 on a Windows 7 64-bit machine, with Microsoft Office 2013 32-bit installed.
When I try to generate printed output, I get a message box stating that "A supported version of Microsoft Word does not exist.  Please install Microsoft Word 2000 or newer."  I have tried different projects, including the sample RoboHelp projects, and get the same message.
I have read other similar questions, but for many of the people the problem was due to running a 64-bit version of Word.
    1) Is there somewhere in the RH interface that I can "select" the version of Word I am running or set the path to my Word install folder?
    2) Is there a fix available?
    3) Will upgrading to RH 11 fix the problem?
    Thank you for your input....

    No.
Well, it's not supported and it's a hack... But you may want to try: Re: Importing Word 2013 files into existing projects in RH10
Yes. Office 2013 is fully supported in RoboHelp 11. Upgrading will also solve browser compatibility options as well give you lots of new features. See Peter's RoboHelp Tour.
    Kind regards,
    Willam

  • Use proxy server

I have installed Fiddler software but it seems it changes proxy server settings beside tracking all browser activity due to statistics.
When I uninstalled Fiddler I noticed error in Mozilla as all browsing was refused:
The proxy server is refusing connections
Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.
Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.
Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working.
I have seen that login as another user will work but the same settings will not work under user where is installed Fiddler.
There is AUTO detecting proxy and use a proxy server.
How to manage that it will be set use a proxy server but solve browsing when I uninstall Fiddler?
Is there some Windows 8 configuration as Mozilla is hit by Fiddler.

    Hi,
I have checked previous posts. I understand it is default Use proxy system and I can use NO proxy. It is an issue that software hits Mozilla settings for the user as Use proxy system and browsing will not work anymore. Fiddler should warn users that even if you use uninstall it will not bring back settings.
This is time consuming as Mozilla is not responsible.
Is there system data inside Windows 8 to bring back working Use proxy system in Mozilla for user where is installed Fiddler? I like to use default due to security.

  • [SOLVED] No sound in browser

    Hi everyone!
I recently moved from Ubuntu to Arch (Yeah!). Everything was fine, the installation was quite easy and I found everything I needed with on the official repos and AUR.
I only have one major problem: There is absolutely no sound in my browser (I tried both Firefox and Chromium). The problem is not only with flash, html5 audio does not work either.
The sound works in vlc, xmms2 and everything else, except for the browsers. I tried to figure out the problem for hours, looking in many forums and installing different packages.
I don't know where to go now. I don't really understand how do sound works in Linux and I don't know which information I should give here and where to find it.
Does anyone have an idea ? Which information should I dump here to help ?
    Thanks !

    Ok I solve my problem.
I have two sound card: "Generic" (HDMI) and "Generic_1" (Analog). The "alsa: default" device was set to "Generic".
I only changed the "alsa: default" device to use "Generic_1".

  • How to pacman -Sy by hand, or against only a single repo? [SOLVED]

I've written a wrapper for makepkg that builds my packages and adds them to my local custom repo. If I give the wrapper a -i flag, I want to then install them from the repo. I suppose I could just use pacman -U, but I prefer to use yaourt -S local_repo/package_name=desired_version. To do this, though, I have to synch my pacman lib db against the newly updated local_repo. Currently I'm just doing a pacman -Sy to do that. Downside is that hits all the other repos too. Often I find myself building and rebuilding and reinstalling a package multiple times as I tweak the PKGBUILD. Repeatedly synching against all the repos is bad for me (few extra seconds every cycle) and bad for the repos.
What I need is a way to synch against only my local_repo. I can't figure out how to do that using any pacman cmd-line switch. The format of the repo file looks very simple, so I tried doing this manually:
    sudo tar -xzf /path/to/local_repo/local_repo.db.tar.gz -C /var/lib/pacman/sync/local_repo
    stat --printf "%X" /path/to/local_repo/local_repo.db.tar.gz | sudo tee /var/lib/pacman/sync/local_repo/.lastupdate > /dev/null
But pacman still seems not to notice the changes. E.g. if I do pacman -Si local_repo/new_package, I get a report of the previous package version, not the newly added one.
Is there any way to synch just my local repo, either using pacman or by hand?

You're right, that works.  As happens too often, I was making things more difficult than they needed to be...
EDIT: it works sometimes, and sometimes doesn't. I still can't figure out what determines the difference...
If you untar on top of a directory, any existing directories (at least at the top level) that don't exist in the archive will be left there, not removed. But this is fine for my purposes. I can wait until the next full pacman sync to delete them.
And the problem of I-dont-wanna-untar-the-old-stuff-too can be solved by doing:
    sudo tar -xzvf "$PKGDEST/$REPONAME.db.tar.gz" --after-date="@$(cat /var/lib/pacman/sync/$REPONAME/.lastupdate)" -C /var/lib/pacman/sync/$REPONAME
That is, we use the sync dir's existing .lastupdate file to give us a date (in Unix epoch format, which tar needs to see as "@12234556"), and we tell tar just to extract the files modified after that date. I can tell from the -v output that this is working properly.
But it's still a mystery why sometimes this works and sometimes doesn't...
    # ...add new package version to local_repo, then...
    sudo repo-add path/to/local_repo.db.tar.gz path/to/new/package
    # untar local_repo.db.tar.gz on top of /var/lib/pacman/sync/local_repo, as above, then...
    sudo pacman -S local_repo/new_package=new_version
