[Solved]Can't get any bootloader to work

I previously had Mint installed on my computer and before I tried installing Arch on my computer I set up a virtual machine and installed arch on that with no problems on my first try.  Now I've installed arch from the net install(same iso I used from the VM install and it's 64 bit) and it appears that everything installs correctly but when I reboot I get an error 15 from grub.  When I installed I used syslinux not grub so I figure this is some remanent from my old Mint install.  I tried installing with grub but got the same error.  Then I installed with syslinux as my bootloader 3 more times and got the same error.
I set up the system with a single partition the first time(same as on the vm) and then I tried letting it do the auto partition but still no success.
I'd appreciate any input into what I'm doing wrong and I figure it's something simple I missed.
Edit: I installed arch successfully on a vm again so I'm sure it's some issue related to my hardware.
System Info:
AMD quad core processor
16GB Ram
5 hard drives, installing on a 500GB drive
The thing I can't figure out is that syslinux doesn't give me a choice to install to a specific hard drive so I'm not sure how I'm messing up the install.  I also tried both the dev and uuid method of referring to my hard drives.  This is really stumping me.

Sorry if I wasn't clear about the error.  I said I installed syslinux and i was still getting the grub error still.  I figured out that the error was due to the order my hard drives were booting in.  I had to try every single order.  The reason I was so confused was that I had installed grub the time I switched the hard drive boot order and I used the /dev/sdxy reference so I still got the same error.  I had assumed that since there was a boot order then if nothing was found on one drive then the other drive would boot up.  What happened  when I changed the boot order of the drives was that with two of the drives I'd just get a blinking cursor and the other two drives would have the grub error 15.  Then I switched the drive order after a syslinux install and i got it going to busybox because my /dev/sdxy were wrong because I changed the boot order.  So I installed using UUID and then my problem went away.  I appreciate everyone's help in this matter.
Summary: UUID is better than /dev/sdxy for drive reference and it I needed to change the boot order of the drives(it would be nice if my bios called them what they were in the boot menu like it does in the summary screen).

  • Can't get any audio "changers" working

Hello, I have HP Pavilion 2250so, and I can't get any audio changer or like that working. I can't get Dolby Advanced Audio working and the IDT Audio which is already on my computer doesn't work, evey time I try to start that, it says -"IDT PC Audio has stopped working. I don't mean that I don't have sound in my computer, no I have but I can't get those audio programs working which are like equalizer in Windows Media Player 11 that you can add bass boost and stuff. Any help?

I would recommend that you first try updating the IDT Driver using the following link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-112600-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...
If that doesn't seem to help, try updating your BIOS: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-116222-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...
Let me know if either of those helped to resolve your issue or not. If they do not, let me know and I will see if I can find anything else to help you.

  • Can't get any video driver working (X-Server)

Hi everybody (and thx for reading this),
I'm about to install Arch Linux 64 Bit on a new machine, an Acer Aspire 8935G. I installed Arch Linux on several plattforms over the last months with help from the brilliant Wiki-Guide. Unfortunatley I can't figure out how to get the X-Server running this time, so I need a little (???) help here to point me in the right direction.
System is up and running. Graphic Card is a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 (and an Mobile Intel GM45). What I did so far was installing the radeonhd driver first (and later others, because radeonhd wouldn't work) and configure X with:
    # Xorg - configure
Which resulted in a message of the X Protocol:
    List of video drivers:
    radeonhd
    intel
    ati
    radeon
    fbdev
    vesa
after that I installed and ran HAL, to avoid problems with input hotplugging.
    Finally, to test the configuration:
    # X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
    (EE) RADEONHD(0): rhdAtomGetDDCIndex: GPIO_DDC Index 5 exceeds maximum 5
(EE) RADEONHD(0): AtomBIOS returned 3 Grey Levels
(EE) RADEONHD(0): AtomBIOS returned 3 Grey Levels
(EE) RADEONHD(0): rhdAtomLvdsDDC: unknown record type: c
    (EE) RADEONHD(0): ParseTable said: CD_INVALID_OPCODE
    (EE) RADEONHD(0): atomSetBacklightFromBIOSScratch: rhtAtomDigTransmitterControl(atomTransEnable) failed.
    ^C
Playing around with vesa, intel and fbdev didn't bring me any further. Vesa and Intel led to a black screen without responding keys (hard reset is necessary every time) and FBDEV led to a error message:
    Primary device is not PCI
    (EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOBLANK: Invalid argument
Maybe it's an issue with the integrated full hd monitor, because of the DDC-Message, but googling around didn't help for the moment. The hardware works with Linux, Mandriva 32-bit-Image ran out of the box with X-Server and KDE 4.2. But I would prefer an Installation of Arch Linux with the software, I really need and want.
I will try to add the xorg.conf later on as I'm writing this on an other machine.
Thx in advance for the help!

Yes, I know. I also tried to get it working without an preconfigured xorg.conf. You know it... yeah... results in a black screen ;-).
zenlord wrote:And are you using the latest software? I installed Debian stable on a G45-chipset with intel graphics last week and I had to use at least the 2.6.2-driver IIRC, or upon loading the (old) driver, the DVI-port was disconnected and I was left with a black screen, but otherwise working install
Yesterday, I experimented with the Intel driver, because I found out that Mandriva also uses them, not fglrx like I thought. First I tried the xf86-video-intel. Have given me the typical X-Server feeling at start, probing the monitor I guess, than the backlight of the screen is on but the screen itself stays black. Fells like it's working, just the monitor is not respondig. Tried 1001 different screen settings, but the problem can't get solved. The same phenomenon can be experienced when usen the latest Intel-Git-Drivers from AUR. Last message of Xorg was: Setting up DRM Master or something like that. I will go and check it tonight again and report back.

Like AdrenalineJunky stated radeonhd supports the card. I read about it yesterday.

  • [SOLVED] Can't get my PS2 keyboard working

    Hi
I just bought the reknowned IBM model M keyboard with PS2 connector, and when I boot into Arch, I can't get it to work.
I found this post, which links to a supposed solution, but the link is unfortunately dead: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=36299
    Some facts:
    1. The keyboard does work when I'm at the bootloader.
    2. I can boot into a Puppy Linux derivative from USB and use the keyboard without any problems, which leads me to believe the problem is in Arch.
    3. I am using a USB mouse.
    4. Plugging and unplugging the keyboard does not show up in dmesg
Any thoughts on how to fix this are appreciated
    Thanks
    Martin

I didn't think so either, but the previous post I linked suggested it might be, so I thought I post the results of my test.

The first line looks like it is from the PS2 keyboard, at least that's how I interperet AT Translated Set 2. Strange that the timestamp is completely wrong. The other lines are from when I plugged my USB keyboard in.
Maybe there is a hook in mkinitcpio I can add, or something with udev?

  • [Solved] Can't get my bootloader installed

So this is my first time installing Arch since they removed the installer. Got so frustrated I tried using my old installer disc...several times, but no luck there either, seems the kernel is too old and trying to update it first gets into REALLY nasty dependancy issues.
Anyway, I keep getting to the bootloader installation, but can't get passed that. I'm following the instruction from the Grub wiki page:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB#Installation
I was originally going to use syslinux, but when looking into the differences I read some posts that SEEMED to imply that syslinux won't work for encrypted drives -- something about it not being able to boot a partition it isn't installed to, which doesn't seem right...but Grub seemed to have better instructions for encrypted discs anyway so I stuck with that. This is for my monsterous desktop which I'm making a dual boot, Windows on sda1, /boot on sda2, encrypted / on sda4, and encrypted /home on sda5. The encrypted partitions using LUKS and dm_crypt.
So, first I tried installing Grub to the MBR, because I've never heard of this GPT BIOS partition, but it gave the following error:
    sh-4.2# modprobe dm-mod
    sh-4.2# grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
/usr/bin/grub-bios/setup: warning: your embedding area is unusally small. core.img won't fit in it..
/usr/bin/grub-bios/setup: warning: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..
/usr/bin/grub-bios/setup: error: will not proceed with blocklists.
Then I tried the instructions to install to the GPT partition, and got this:
    sh-4.2# parted /dev/sda set 3 bios_grub on
    parted: invalid token: bios_grub
    Flag to Invert? boot/raid/lvm/lba/palo/prep/diag?
When I tried putting that last error into Google, the best answer I've found is 'don't use parted'...which would be fine if I knew enough about the boot sequence to know what I need to do with a different tool, but I don't. Maybe I should switch to an easier distro...but I've already got Arch on three other computers and I quite like it. Anyone know what's going on here?
Also, feel free to throw in any additional advice/warnings you may have regarding setting up encrypted drives...feels like there's some seams between the encrypted drive wiki page and the general installation one. I think I've got it handled, but who knows yet....

Oh wow. If I had known syslinux would be so easy to install and configure I would have tried that before posting this! Worked perfectly on the first shot, thanks for the advice.

  • [Radeon] MSI RX9550SE Can't Get Any Drivers to Work

Board is recognized my O/S but I can only get a vidoe signal with generic VGA driver.  Currently the board only shows in my devices as MSI RX9550SE T128 Secondary.  If I try installing drivers from installation disk with board, latest from MSI site or Catalyst 5.3 from ATI I get the same result - black screen {no signal} using these drivers but system boots fine.  All of these drivers cause message that they are not XP signed but I continue anyway.  I have removed and reinstalled device numerous times, no difference.
I have set the BIOS AGP to 4 instead of 4x/8x.  I have updated my BIOS and MSI board drivers to the latest.  I notice in other threads that there may be issued with some MB for instability using PS/2 mouse and keyboard.  Sometimes this devices are not recognized and have to reboot and wehn sw\itching users in XP system reboots itself.  Have not switched to USB mouse and keyboard yet.
Kind of pointless to have this vidoe board if I can only run the generic VGA driver which gives me none of the performance the board should.  I must have something not set right, this should work just fine.  Any suggestions?

Got rid of MB drivers and ATI drivers, used Device Cleaner
Installed latest nVidia neoforce and ATI catalyst from their websites.  Now XP Devices shows MSI RX9550SE T128 {and appears disabled} and MSI RX9550SE T128 Secondary {appears enabled}.  Both show the driver as the current ATI driver I installed.  If I enable the non-secondary device screen goes black but computer still runs (does not reboot}.
However, Advanced Setting from desktop properties under Adapter shows no identified adapter type with all items under Information as <unavailable>.  Adapter properties say VgaSave.  Catalyst Control Center does not open when launched and running ATI Wizard produces "Catalyst Control Center Desktop Setup Failed".
Seems like I have more issues than a driver problem.  None of my devices report any conflicts.  Any other ideas?  MSI support says to use their drivers since they may tweak ATI's some for their products.

  • I can't get any sound to work on my ipod touch

I cannot get any sound on my ipod touch. When I am listening to music the volume bar is not visible and when I am on my apps it says no volume available. Anybody have any suggestions on what I can do to fix this?

Here is what Apple Says: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2771
    No sound through internal speaker*
Verify that the iPod touch is not set to pause.
Verify that the volume is set appropriately.
Verify that headphones are not attached to the headphone port.
Verify that Bluetooth stereo headphones are not paired wirelessly.
Try turning the iPod touch off and then on again.
    No sound through headphones*
Verify that there's no debris in the headphone port.
Plug and unplug the headphones. Reconnect headphones and verify the connector is pushed in all the way.
Check the volume setting on your iPod touch.
If you are trying to listen to music and cannot hear any audio, make sure that the music is not paused.
Make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed on the computer that you are syncing the iPod touch with (songs purchased from the iTunes Store using earlier versions of iTunes won't play).
Try another set of Apple headphones.
Try a different song or video.
Check other content, such as videos, to see if they exhibit the same audio issues.

    good luck.
If the device had Find My iPhone activated, yes.  Otherwise, no, you don't need your Apple ID & Password, just because of iOS 7.
To access iCloud or iTunes, etcetera, yes.  But that's no different than in iOS 6.

  • [SOLVED] Can't get epson Perfection V500 working with xsane/iscan

    SOLVED
Cool, solved my own problem.  Nothing in the docs about what needs to be done, maybe on the distros that avasys supports this is done automatically by the install scripts.  Poking around I found a utility with iscan called iscan-registry.  A little googling found that this needs to be used to tell iscan where to find the plugin/firmware for a particular scanner.  In the case of my particular scanner you need to run:
    iscan-registry -a interpreter usb 0x04b8 0x0130 /usr/lib/iscan/libesint7C /usr/share/iscan/esfw7C.bin
Now working like a champ.  Yay now I don't need to install Debian
Did a search of the forums hoping to find something similar to my problem, but I'm not seeing anything.  I've gotten a Epson Perfection Photo V500 scanner which the sane website will work if you download the backend and firmware from the avasys site.
I've built iscan using the pkgbuild in AUR, and extracted the firmware from the rpm on the avasys site.  sane-find-scanner finds the scanner, but scanimage -L and iscan both fail to detect it.
I'm part of the scanner group, but I don't think this is a permissions issue as even as root, scanimage -L and iscan still cannot find the scanner.
Thought maybe it was a configuration issue, but I've added the vendor and product IDs and a firmware line with the path to the firmware file to /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf and this didn't help at all.  It just made things fail slower.  I don't think any tweaks to the config are required though as nothing needs to be done to get this scanner working in debian/ubuntu, just installing the debs is enough, and the configs put in by those don't look too different from the arch ones.
Interestingly enough, vue-scan also requires the firmware/drivers from avasys to work with this scanner and I'm able to scan with it no problem.
At the moment is seems as though my options are installing vue-scan or setting up a PC with debian, which is the one I'm leaning towards at the moment as I'd like to see if Iscan/xsane can do what I need before shelling out for vue-scan.  But I'd really like to keep arch but be able to use my scanner.
This is my first time using a scanner on Liunx so it could be I'm missing something obvious.  Anyone have any ideas?

Can I have a link to where you found this 'iscan-registry' package?  I need it too.
EDIT: Never Mind, forgot to finish installing iscan    I only installed the iscan-data.

  • [SOLVED] Can't get ethernet and wireless working on timelineX 3820TG

Hi folks I am new around here, but wanted to try arch for a while now.
So here is my problem and description :
I installed Arch (everything in order there and the guide is great! ), but when I come to the part of connecting to the internet I seem to be left without an option for internet conection. Which is strange because I have Ubuntu installed on the machine and wireless works (propriatary drivers) and ethernet kind of works (atheros driver).
Now from Ubuntu I know that for my wifi I need  the wl kernel module (Broadcom wireless card) and that I need the atl1c module for the Ethernet.
So here is some basic info about the machine:
installed image 2010.05 x64 with kernel:
    2.6.33-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu May 13 11:32:37 CEST 2010 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 450 @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
    ifconfig -a output :
    lo Link encap:Local Loopback
    inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
    UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
    RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
    RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
Even if I load the atl1c module the output is the same, I tried loading the atl1e instead. I also tried blacklisting atl1c and atl1e and adding them with modprobe command.
here are the two adapters (wireless and lan) :
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications AR8151 v1.0 Gigabit Ethernet (rev c0)
05:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation Device 4357 (rev 01)
    EDIT:
    Well...
After a quite extensive research I see that the atl1c and atl1e are quite buggy... so I guess in my case they won't work.
But I am not giving up yet...
all I need is internet conection (wireles or wired), so I did some research on the Broadcom 4357.
It turnes out that I can find it in the AUR repository. And there is also a tar from broadcom.
I also found this guide which describes how to install the driver.
    That however presents new problems...
make command output for the broadcom driver :
make: *** /lib/modules/"release"/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
while "makepgk" tells me that makepgk is not installed.
I also searched in the packages section for build-essential, makepgk... but found nothing relevant. Maybe I did something wrong ?
Any Ideas on how to get it all working and compile the driver? (preferably with the files from AUR)
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks. i found this one: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19514
that's too bad. i was hoping i wouldn't have to use it, but maybe i have no choice.
but now that broadcom has released the driver as open source (see this: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ker … ral/55418), will broadcom-wl become obsolete?

  • [SOLVED] Can't get Flash plugin to work.

    Hi, all.
I have done a fresh install of Arch, but am still using my previous /home partition.
I've installed mozplugger, Flash and Firefox, but the Flash plugin doesn't function.
Can anyone tell me how I can get around this?
    Many thanks,
    Chris.

I do not have any value in $MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH. Manually exporting from an xterm, and spawing firefox from the same xterm makes firefox realise I have plugins.
    1) I have logged in/out, and rebooted multiple times after firefox's installation, and after flash installation
    2) I do have, and am using bash(even to startx), /etc/profile _is_ being called. However /etc/profile does not have a $MOZ_PLUGIN_PATH variable set in it anywhere.
Is firefox package supposed to edit the /etc/profile to add this variable? Obviously setting the variable here is the solution, just curious now as to why it was a problem to begin with.
Thanks for pointing me the right direction there wonder.

  • Captivate 6:  Can't get any JavaScript to work when published as SWF

    Version 6.0.1.240
    Windows 7 x64
I have a button with an action of "Execute JavaScript" and can't event get a simple alert("hello"); to work when published as SWF.  I've tried publishing it with each of the different Flash Player versions.  JavaScript works fine when published as HTML5.

@Erickj:  Either do what Rod stated (adjusting your Flash Security settings) or test your content from a true web server.  Flash automatically trusts content coming off a true web server where the web address begins with http or https and ends in .htm or .html.
The nice thing about Cp 7 is that it has a built-in web server so you don't run into issues like this when testing your content.

Director MX2004 and newer wörk great on Win7 64 bit.
Mostly seen problems are with security in program files folder.
Install Director to eg c:\progs\director and it will work.
