[Solved] Can't hear Skype and Web Browser at the same time?

Hello. I am running Arch with Gnome and PulseAudio. I'm having a strange problem with audio. Whenever I have Skype open as well as a browser (Chromium) I can only hear one of the applications. (This happens in other applications as well.) For example, when I am talking to someone on Skype I would not be able to listen to Pandora Radio of a YouTube video. Can anyone here help? Thanks.

Probably one of these applications is using the OSS compatibility of ALSA. As it is the default of a lot of apps to try OSS first.
ALSA has dmix which is a software mixer, but -in my experience- it often fails when the OSS compatibility is used. Perhaps it can work if you do some configuring of it, but since this is Newbie Forums, I guessing it's stock (no problem with that! that's fine).
An easy fix is to blacklist the snd-pcm-oss module, to prevent applications of using the OSS compatibility layer. You hardly need it nowadays.
Edit /etc/rc.conf with your favorite editor (and don't forget you need root priviliges to save your work ) and blacklist the module in the MODULES clause:
MODULES=(!snd-pcm-oss)
Now you can reboot and the module will no longer be loaded.
And if you don't want to reboot immediatly:
Make sure you have closed all apps that might use sound and therefor use the OSS module.
Go to a terminal and:
# rmmod snd-pcm-oss
Note the "#", this is with root priviliges again. So either become root or sudo to issue this command.

Can't run wiki and web services at the same time?

I'm a newbie with Lion Server, but I've been running several web sites successfully for about 6 months. I'm up to Server 10.7.4.
I've been trying ever since the first installation of Server to get the wiki service running. I had absolutely no luck until I turned OFF the web service (always got the "URL does not exist" error when I tried to create a group wiki from inside the Server app). With the web service off, it all starts up fine and I created my first wiki (woohoo). Turning web service back on kills access to the wiki. I don't find reference to this in any of the dicussions, and especially not in Apple's documentation.
Are the Wiki and Web services mutually exclusive? Or is there a way around this?
I'm using Dyndns to provide me with sub-domains to use, and I've dedicated one of them to the wiki service. Traffic comes in on port 8080, where my web sites are on port 80.

LR supports tethering using a Canon DLL and EOS Utility probably also supports tethering or at least uses something from a similar Canon DLL. You probably cannot have two different versions of that DLL loaded at the same time, so it makes sense there are problems.

Can I Edit SD and HDV footage at the same time in CS4?

I have a Sony PD 150 camcorder and I'm looking at buying a Sony HDR-HC# HDV 1080i camcorder to use as a second camera on video shoots. Can I edit footage from both cameras on the same timeline in CS4? I'm using a PC, running Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002 with an Intel (R) Pentium (R) 2.80 GB processor with 2.5 GB of RAM. I have a Windows XP 2005 with 3.4GHz with 4GB of ram and it cant handle HDV for HD video.
I have a Sony HVR Z1U and use the in camera down-rez and edit in SD just fine.
Like said before you really need a new computer to edit the HDV but if your going to DVD then your only using SD anyway.
But to answer you question you can mix formats with CS4.

[SOLVED] How to use timidity++ and other programs at the same time?

I have installed timidity following arch wiki instructions - I have soundfont, and I start it in /etc/rc.conf
It works properly with tuxguitar (and tuxguitar-alsa) or kmid, but I cannot play MIDI and - for example - oggs in amarok at the same time.
I suspect that the problem is that timidity doesn't use dmix alsa plugin I have made in my ~/.asoundrc.
The question is: how to tell timidity to use my dmix plugin?

I can't run LR5 and EOS utility at the same time

I'm running Mac OS 10.9.5, LR5.7 & Eos Utility 3.
I can't run LR and Eos3 at the same time. Eos just crashes and have to force quit Eos.
Any tips anyone?

Can I have mail and contacts open at the same time

I really want to be able to have one or more iCloud Apps open at the same time; for example, I may be looking up some info on a contact or in calendar in order to mail someone. At times I have just opened a different tab, but it seems that iCloud then gets messed up.
I am running Windows 7 at work and the latest version fo Chrome.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know in Chrome, but in Safari (pc or mac) you can open icloud.com twice on two different tab or windows and open one with contact and the other in Mail without messing up. What kind of mess to do you experience?
There is no other options to do what you want to do. You need to click on the little top cloud to switch from one to another.
Beside, I don't understand why even 2 open tab would help more than having to switch via the cloud icon. I may need to cut/paste some info from contact or calendar from time to time, but switch via the cloud icon is not really painfull.

Can you run 7 and 6.5 at the same time?

Since one of the key features I use is missing in version 7 (duration of a selection) I'm wondering if I can somehow run 6.5 along with V7 and, if so, how this would be done.

I use both (6.5.2 and 7.0.3) on my Mac mini.
You can only have one "install" of QT on the machine but you can use the QuickTime Player from both versions at the same time.
Version 6.5.2 will run "on top" of the version 7 "framework". You'll have all of the "old" menus when you use it. But you'll also have access to the new H.264 video codec.
Find a copy of QuickTime Player (maybe a back up or a different machine) and place it on your Desktop.

Can't play DVD and use Spotlight at the same time.

I have been running in to all sorts of problems while playing a DVD. I have TV shows on DVD, so I watch them while I work. Everytime I have one playing and I open Spotlight to search for something my PB begins making this very loud noise. I don't know if it is my DVD player or something else, but as soon as I delete what is was I was searching for in Sportlight, it stops. It really bugs hearing this noise, because it sounds like something is wrong. If anybody can help, that would be great.

Oh sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear.
I have noticed that when you ask the optical drive to do one thing, it spins perfectly well and does what it is supposed to.
If however you ask it do a second thing while it is still doing the first, then the laser skips between the two jobs and sounds strange.
So... If you had a dvd or cd with 2 large files on it and
a) Selected BOTH files together and copied them to the desktop, the drive would spin fast and transfer the files.
b) Selected one file to copy and started the transfer to the desktop, THEN while the first was copying, selected a SECOND file from the DVD and started copying that, you would find the laser skipping between the two jobs.
I thought that if you do this, and it is the same as what happens when watching a dvd and using spotlight, then it could be that spotlight is indexing the dvd while it is playing and the drive is therefore trying to do two things at once.

Can I sync Outlook and Outlook Express at the same time? Please help!

Hi, I'm new to BlackBerry so please be gentle.
I was able to install the BB desktop and sync my BB to Yahoo contacts and Outlook Express. I would like to also sync it to regular Outlook. (If you're interested, here's why: I run a small business and I wasn't able to get my website's email to come into regular Outlook so I have to use stinky Outlook Express to get my emails. However, I want to be able to use Outlook for all the other good stuff - contact, notes, calendar - and have everything on my awesome new BlackBerry.)
Is there a way to have both? When I try to configure it, it just doesn't have an Outlook option.
If there isn't a way to do this, does someone have another idea for a functional address book?

Can I Use HDMI and Thunderbolt Outputs At The Same Time? And Mac App Store Issues

I have a Mid-2011 Mac Mini. I am currently using the HDMI output with an HDMI to Digital Input for a dell monitor. If I wanted to have a second monitor, can I use the Thunderbolt output with a MiniDisplayport to VGA adapter? I know it may sound a little unclear, so if you need a clarification, pelase let me know.
Also, on the same macine, I am having trouble connecting to the Mac App Store. My internet connection is working, and I've tried going into the Keychain Access and there isn't anything with a blue plus. When I go to Store --> Sign In , the sign in widnow doesn't appear.

Can I use "g" and "n" AXs at the same time for Airtunes?

Hi, hope someone can help with this.
I currently have a wireless "g" network made up of a Netgear DG834PN router handling DHCP and with wireless off, an AEBS "n" as a wirelss base station and 4 AXs (2 "g" and 2"n") doing extended wireless and airtunes to different rooms around the house.
If I use the Netgear for the "g" wifi and the AEBS for an "n" network and then set up the two "g" AXs on the "g" network and the two "n" AXs on the "n" network, but all still plugged into remote speakers will all the AXs still appear in my iTunes remote speaker list?
Also, will I still be able to control them all from the Remote app on my 1st gen iPod touch connected to the "g" network?
I seem to have built a bit of a monster here but it works fine as is. I'd just like to know if I can get a seperate "n" network going without losing any of my airtunes functionality.

Yes, just like any network resource they should be available.

The app on your iPod controls iTunes on your computer streaming the music, so yes you would be able to control them all because you are controlling iTunes.

Do you really think it's not possible to do both and set them up the way that you want them to be set up? You just don't understand how the process works.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.

Can you have 3G and 4G toggles at the same time

I have searched google/apple but can't find a mention anywhere that the 4G(LTE) toggle is possible to have as well as a 3G toggle.
I have heard mention that the one usually replaces the other depending on the carrier plist (carrier update)
i.e would adding "Enable3GSwitch" to the plist file show both toggles?
In my current plist I can only see that the 4G toggle seems to be renamed from LTE i.e.
DataIndicatorOverideForLTE is set to 4G.
Obvioulsy find out if its possible to have both is needed before I rant and rave at Vodafone here in the UK.

The iPhone can maintain multiple pairing records, but it can only connect to one headset or hands-free device at a time. However, in your situation there may be a solution. You can connect the iPhone via Bluetooth for calls and use the 3.5mm jack on your iPhone and car radio to connect for music.

The toslink on my 2010 mini is glitchy. So I want to run the audio through the hdmi to my recevier. And the video through the minidisplay port to hdmi to a monitor. Will this work? Can I use the hdmi for audio only and the display port for video only? Thanks
