[solved] catalyst: Building fglrx module for 3.0-ARCH failing

I'm running Arch on my laptop since some time now.
Lately I've done some updates and encountered a problem with my ati (catalyst driver).
Everytime the auto-build module tries to compile, I'm getting an error:
$ sudo catalyst_build_module allg
Building fglrx module for 3.0-ARCH kernel ...
Failed!!! Check out log: /var/log/catalyst-install.log
this is what gets logged:

I checked it and that build directory is obviously really missing.
I appreciate any help from you guys, since it's really odd to work on this laptop without the correct graphics drivers..

    Instead, I switched to catalyst-hook (I used catalyst) and upgraded to kernel 3.11.4, the latest version of xorg (there was a new one), gnome 3.10 and the module compiled perfectly, so now everything works on my system
    You right, but you know... I have a lot projects in queue and not have time to search and test evertying
    But, now... catalyst has installed successfully, but, I think isn't working 100%, because, when I click (for example), in a Google Chrome tab, and move to left/right, all tabs disappear or are blurry.

  • Trouble building kernel module for sensor support

    Hi, I'm new here but have been using Arch for a while.  Recently, I decided to install Arch on an old laptop (Toshiba A70) and have managed to work out most of the kinks to where it runs nicely.  Unfortunately, ACPI support is spotty and the /sys/class/thermal directory gives me only cooling_device0.  I installed the lm-sensors package and ran sensors-detect, which yielded no results.  Although the laptop runs smoothly otherwise, I would like to know the CPU's temp so that I would be able to set up a fan control scheme and CPU scaling (so far it's stuck at the lowest frequency, and that's kind of a big deal for me since the laptop runs on an archaic mobile P4 chip).
    Sorry for the story but I felt some context was necessary.  I did manage to find a kernel module that would connect those sensors to ACPI for me (http://sourceforge.net/projects/omnibook/), however I'm having trouble building it on the latest kernel.  Here is the output from running make:

  • [SOLVED] Trouble building VMware modules

    Hello there,
    I have VMware Player installed, but since last kernel update from 2.6.32 to .33 all modules have to be rebuilt. The thing is that when I start the app I get a message about it not finding the kernel headers. I have kernel26-headers installed, and the headers are actually under /usr/src/2.6.33-ARCH/include, but vmware won't find them.
    Any ideas?

    Ok, VMware Player 3.0.1 actually finds the headers and builds its moudles, so now /etc/rc.d/vmware start works ok. But now vmplayer crashes without any errors when I open it. Launching it from the cli drops this output:

  • [SOLVED] Error building vanilla kernel for PS3

    I installed all the base packages for ArchPPC and have chrooted into it. I downloaded/uncompressed kernel 2.6.24 from kernel.org and ran `cp arch/powerpc/configs/ps3_defconfig .config`. The first time, I went straight to make after that. That gave me the error "linux-2.6.24/scripts/gcc-version.sh: line 26: printf: #: invalid number". So I ran pacman -Sy gcc3, then edited my Makefile setting HOSTCC=gcc-3.3, HOSTCXX=g++-3.3, and CC=gcc-3.3.
    Now when I run make (after doing make clean) the first error I get is:
    include/asm/mmu-hash64.h:437: error: `SID_SHIFT' undeclared (first use in this function)
    Any ideas?

    You need a ppc64 cross-compiler to build a ps3 kernel. You can use the crosstool pkgbuilds from here: http://kth5.telekommunisten.net/archlinux/crosstools/
    All you need to do is to replace the 32 bit ppc targets with powerpc64-unknown-linux-gnu and it should build fine.

  • CIFS Kernel module for Ideatab S6000L

    I just bought an Ideatab S6000L and I tried to mount my share as a local folder using CIFS. After some research it seems some modules are missing. I tried with modules from other version (for example in this topic http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-Android-based-Tablets/CIFS-Kernel-Module-can-t-mount-CIFS-share-on-...
    It didn't work and I don't know how to build thoses modules for this specific version, could someone provide me thoses modules or help me to build them please?

  • Should modules for different kernels differ?

    I'm trying to build acpi_call-git from the AUR. The build seems to go rather too smoothly. I uninstalled a custom kernel (which I only have for debugging) which leaves the standard Arch and Arch LTS kernels installed. I have the headers installed for both kernels:
    $ pacman -Qs linux-[lts-]*headers

    What is confusing me is that the package seems to build identical modules for the two kernels and I am not sure whether that's right:
    $ diff pkg/acpi_call-git/usr/lib/modules/extramodules-3.11-ARCH/acpi_call.ko.gz pkg/acpi_call-git/usr/lib/modules/extramodules-3.10-lts/acpi_call.ko.gz
    $ echo $?
    0
    Shouldn't there be a difference between the two? That is, I know that you typically need modules which match the kernel - otherwise the modules can't be loaded. So presumably if building module M for kernel K1 produces M1, and building module M for kernel K2 produces M2, then M1 cannot be identical with M2.
    Is there a problem here or am I just horribly confused?

    If the kernel functions (especially the specifications) used by acpi_call haven't changed, then the module could indeed be the same for both kernels.
    You'd have to check the kernel commits for acpi related changes to be sure.

    Hello,
    I've compiled and intstalled the rtkernel with the directions posted here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=52201
    My laptop uses an ati card and needs catalyst drivers. The fglrx module works fine with the vanilla kernel and pacman does not install it for the rt kernel(I think they are not compatible?) so I think I need the catalyst-rt module(also while installing the kernel, the pkgbuild told me that I needed catalyst-rt).
    I could find no packages named catalyst-rt in the repos, but AUR database has one:

    But I think there is a problem with the install. After I compile the package and run it with "pacman -U", it complains about an unexpected EOF because of an unmatched quote mark. I've extracted the generated "catalyst-rt-8.5-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz" file to see if I can come up with something, there is indeed a missing quote in one of the echo statements in the contained catalyst-rt.install file. I tried fixing and retarring it but pacman complained about missing metadatas  in the package. This is my 3rd day with arch(and one of those days my Internet connection was broken) so I don't have many clues.
    I figure that there are very few people running ati drivers on a rt kernel here(searching for catalyst-rt yields to nothing) but maybe you can help me fix the issue myself, or maybe there is an easier way to use catalyst with an rt kernel?

    Ok, some more progress:
    As I said, the vanilla kernel works fine with the catalyst drivers. Fully accelerated etc. When working with vanilla kernel if I say " dmesg | grep fglrx", the output is fine:

    The package PKGBUILD downloads is ati-driver-installer-8-5-x86.x86_64
    So I assume that should be at least 8.5? Where does this loaded 8.49.7 come from?
    I'm checking /lib/modules/<myrtkernel>/ to see if there are any other fglrx.ko floating around but there is only one, the one installed from the package built with ati-driver-installer-8-5-x86.x86_64.run
    Since I'm not very competent with linux, I'm hoping some of you can show me some directions. I may try packaging a new ati driver to check but if ati-driver-installer-8-5-x86.x86_64 is actually 8.49, which one should I try then? 8-6? 8-7? I quite don't understand.

  • [Solved] Can not build modules for VMware Player after kernel updates

    I have a problem generating the modules for VMware Player after kernel updates. I am using  VMware Player version 5.02 (without patches) and the softlink according to the Wiki.
    When I start the installation of the modules from the GUI, the program just closes. Running vmware-modconfig in the CLI generates the following log file:

    Today, (Kernel  3.10.5-1, VMware Player version 5.02 with kernel patches) the modules could successful be generated from the CLI:
    vmware-modconfig --console --install-all
    Solved (somehow).

  • Proper method for building kernel modules? [solved]

    I am attempting to build a custom kernel module for a PCI express interface to an FPGA.  However, I seem to be running into some issues with getting the standard kernel module makefile to work correctly.  Here is my makefile:

    I have the linux-headers package installed.  I do not need to build the whole kernel, only this small module.  What am I missing here?  What is the correct procedure for this?

    Sigh, found the problem.  Should be $(PWD) and not $(pwd) in my makefile.

    from what I read on the ubuntu bug-tracker: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/283836 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/284408 this looks like a bug in the fglrx-driver itself. Because that's a closed-source proprietary driver there's not much one can do but waiting for ATI to fix it.
    To solve your problem at the moment you could try to downgrade to a catalyst-driver you know who works with your card or switch to one of the free ati and radeon drivers supporting your card.

  • [SOLVED] nVidia 87.76 Drivers installer fails to build kernel module

    I have a nVidia GeForce2 Integrated graphics card on my Asus A7N266 motherboard. According to the nVidia site, http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html, the most recent driver that supports this is the 96.xx series. Yet as shown here, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=87332, many people have found that the 96.xx series drivers cause graphical corruption when using a GeForce2 IGP.
    Before coming to Arch, I had used Xubuntu 7.04 and managed to compile the last known working drivers, version 87.76, following the instructions here: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/03/25 … 20-12-386/
    That all went well but now I'm using Arch. I tried using the nvidia-96.xx driver in the repos just for testing sake but I still got the same graphical corruption.
    Thus I have been trying to install the 87.76 drivers on Arch, but it always fails at the kernel module building stage. I had first applied this patch here, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … ost1086669, before compling as the plain driver wont compile against recent kernels.

    The name of the directory you placed the driver in contains spaces. That is  why you get the no rule to make target GLX error.

  • [Solved] How to build a module that's not in repos or AUR?

    I am trying to follow the ABS instructions to build a module. I have the source code from GitHub. However, I cannot find anything that says what to do if the module has not already been built somewhere in Arch. It is not in the abs tree and it is not in the AUR. Maybe I just don't understand the ABS instructions, but I seem to need a PKGBUILD to use it. All I have is the source code for the module.
    On Debian, I just run make, then make install. For some reason, that fails in Arch:
    gcc: error: -pg and -fomit-frame-pointer are incompatible
    The recommendations I have found to work around that error say to keep -fomit-frame-pointer and remove -pg. However, -pg is not actually in the Makefile, it is apparently coming from some default location. If I can't find it, I can't remove it.
    In case anyone knows another way to find Arch modules, the one I need is rtl8192du. It is for a USB wireless adapter dongle. https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8192du
