(solved) get X to use my PCI card instead of onboard graphics.

I'm trying to install arch on an old P4 dell (dimension 2350) and given the specific requirements and restrictions of this given beast I'm having a bit of trouble getting X configured.  (I'm turning it into a replacement for my modded xbox running xbmc, yes, I know it won't play hi-def)
Here's the setup:
- It has onboard graphics (intel) which I don't plan on using since it only has vga out.
- I've installed my video card (ATI radeon 9250 - hey it's the best standard pci card I could find)
Here's the problem:
- Everything works with the onboard intel chip
- If I try to plug my monitor in to the ATI card it (the monitor) dims and doesn't register as being attached.\
- I've tried turning off the onboard graphics in my bios but the only options are "onboard" and "auto" so it's currently set to auto.
More fun:
- The fun part is that I plan on using the ATI card's svideo out to my tv once it's set up, I'm just trying to get the monitor to work while I configure everything.
I'm considering trying to run an ubuntu live disc and seeing if I can copy over the xorg.conf file that gets generated.
Any ideas?
**edit
After some searching I've got it working.  Apparently linux still reads onboard cards with this pc/bios because of the piss poor bios.
i added 'blacklist agpgart' & 'blacklist intel_agp' (without quotes) to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, set video to 'auto' in the bios, plugged the monitor into my card and rebooted.
sweet.

My credit card is offering me a $5 statement credit if I spend at least $5 on iTunes.  Problem is I have a large credit balance - how can I get iTunes to charge my credit card instead of using up my apple credit?

If you have a balance on your iTunes account then that will automatically be used for purchases before your credit card will be - you can't change how items are billed.
You could try gifting items to yourself, you can only gift via a credit card (I haven't tried it but I think that you should be able to gift items to yourself)

    Hi John,
If your MBP is a 2011, yes, and here is one example: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S4GB/
If your MBP is from 2006, the other year Apple made a 2GHz, the answer is no, as the max RAM is 2GB.
Given that it appears you already have 2x2GB installed, I'm "guessing" you have the 2011 model, so the answer is yes.

  • How to simutaneously use 2 PCI cards, one with traditional DAQ, the other with DAQmx?

    Hi,
I am currently trying to debug a system that used to work.. but sadly isnt anymore
A single computer contains 2 PCI cards (6110 & 6036E). The 6110 card is controlled by a fairly old software, programmed in labview, and hence, using Traditional NI-DAQ. The 6036e card is controlled by a more recent soft, programmed in LV as well but using DAQmx.
the AI/AO of the 6110 card is only momentarily used (20 sec consecutively, every minute) while the 6036E card is continuously receiving and sending data on its AI/AO.
Now the problem: the program that control the 6036E card freezes every time that the old prog access the 6110 card.. and then it works again perfectly until the next time that the 6110 card is used.
So my question: how can I make those 2 cards work simultaneously?
I dont think that it is because of the software nor because of the computer lack of memory/CPU if it used to work in the past. It might be about a wrong configuration of cards in the MAX but I couldnt find anything wrong there (no problem when accessing AI/AO of both cards through "test panel")
Thank you very much for you help.

That's what bugs me. The only thing that those 2 cards share is an AO of the 6110 connected to an AI of the 6036.
For the rest, nothing is common. The 1st program only deal with device1, while the 2nd prog only access dev2. There shouldnt be any problem and everything is working fine separately. Hence, why I was wondering if the traditional daq and daqmx might conflict on a same computer.
I just cant find out why the 2nd program controling the daqmx card just freeze everytime the 1st program access the traditional card. It actually doesnt freeze completly but becomes soooo slow, with about only 2 iterations of the main while loop during those 15-20 sec (instead of the normal 3-4000 iterations during such a period).
The computer specs are a 2.2ghz proc for 1G of ram and running XP, so it should be ok.. even though the computer does slow a bit down when the 1st prog access the traditional card.

My G5 is getting a bit long in the tooth and I want to buy a Mac Pro. It says that it supports PCI Express cards, but I have several PCI cards in my PowerMac. Since I don't want to buy them all over again, I was wondering if they will work in the Mac Pro?

  • Using a PCI card INTERNAL USB port

Hello to anyone reading this !
I've just installed a PCI card in my G5 in order to add more USB ports. When I started searching for one, i was surprised to see most had an internal port, I couldn't really see the use of that. A friend told me it can be used on PCs to plug an extension towards a free port in front of the main unit.
Considering i can't do this on my G5, I was wondering how to take advantage of this internal port and I'd like to know if I can plug my USB Bluetooth adapter, as it doens't need to be visible and it would free one of my external ports. The question is, are there some security restrictions regarding what you put INSIDE the unit? Isn't it too hot inside to leave the bluetooth key or anything else that is not designed to be inside?
    Does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks in advance
    iVince

With all the airflow in a G5, I don't think heat will be a problem, but a Bluetooth unit probably will not be useful inside a shielded metal case. The Apple Bluetooth card connects to an antenna wire that goes outside the shielded section, but I don't think there is any way to connect that wire to the USB Bluetooth module.

  • USING A PCI CARD TO RUN A 320GIG ATA/IDE HD IN A QUICKSILVER G4

I didn't realise that my model did not support HD's over 120gb. After much reading I found out that I would need a PCI ata 133 card. On checking on ebay it was confusing as to which one. What do I specifically need? There is a range in prices also for similar units. I would rather pay more for quality? Are all PCI cards compatible for macs and PCs?

Hello! No not all cards will work in Macs and many are not bootable. Sonnet's pci cards are bootable and many like OWC's cards. Personally I like Sonnet's SATA card since many new drives are the newer technology. You could put the drive in an external firewire enclosure that would also be bootable. HERE's the Sonnet ide/ata133 card which will do what you want and HERE's a good enclosure should you decide to go that route. tom

Amex is running a special where you get $5 back on a $5 purchase or more at the iTunes store.  I have a gift card balance on the account and wanted to use my credit card for the promotion.  Anyone know how to do this?

The work around.. would be to order a gift, then redeem the gift yourself. As gifts can not be paid for by your store credit.

  • How do I make Visual Studio 2013 use my dedicated graphics card instead of integrated graphics on my laptop?

I am using Alienware 13 as a portable workstation. I do game development on Unreal Engine 4 using Visual Studio 2013. The issue I am having is that when I want to debug codes in Visual Studio 2013, it launches Unreal Engine 4 through the debugger and uses
the integrated graphics card rather than my dedicated graphics card, which is an nVida Geforce 860M.
When I wanted to change the settings in the NVidia Control Panel, I see this:
The drop-down menu is grayed out, so I cannot select to change the graphics card to my dedicated card.
What should I do? How do I make it so that Visual Studio uses my dedicated card? Thanks in advance.

    Hi tom_mai78101,
Thank you for posting in the MSDN forum.
It seems that it is not the correct forum for this issue, since this forum is to discuss Visual Studio WPF/SL Designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System, and Visual Studio Editor.
As you said that you want to change the setting so that Visual Studio uses your dedicated card in NVidia Control Panel, since this NVidia Control Panel is third-party tool, we are not support it. So please post this issue this issue directly
to this NVidia Control Panel Official website:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia-communities.html , you will get better support.
    Thanks for your understanding.
