[SOLVED] Gnome 3.2 Document, Contacts and file preview Problems

Hi, I just enabled the testing the community testing repos today. I updated and I got a huge list of updates and pacman downloaded them. However while checking for file conflicts it said locale.sh was found in /etc/profile.d/ folder and hence it did not install anything. However, I moved the locale.sh folder to my home folder and then proceeded with the installation. It all went smooth. I restarted and was presented with the new login screen. I login and find the new user menu, hot plugs notifications working.
However, Gnome-Documents and Gnome-Contacts are missing. I searching in the application overview but couldn't find it. Also the live preview in nautilus does not work with the keyboard shortcut 'spacebar'. Does anybody have this problem and how to solve this?
Reading through my pacman log file, I see the following error messages during the installation.

I got render and RAM preview problems. help?

i got render and RAM preview problems with after effects! please help me
when i started on a project earlier today the RAM preview was failing and it stoped making a preview after about a second, when i hit the RAM preview buttom again it continued to load and stoped again after a half second, and it continued to do that till it wasn't loading at all, just playing the same thing up even doe it haden't loaded the whole composition! BUT if i moved the (thing you see where you are on the timeline in need of a better name) it started loading a little more and then it stoped again.. so after alot of problems and moving i managed to make a RAM preview of the whole composition..
now the real problem: when i was done with my project and i was going to reender i did like this: i added my composition to the render queue, chosed my render settings and started to render, after exactly 37 frames it stoped and no window or anything poped up, the only thing that was telling me something was wrong was the render status, and it said: ''failed at 0;00;00;37'' that's not even a second! and BTW when i render after effects only uses 12% of my 6GB RAM memory.. i dont know what to do! i've tried other render settings but the same thing happens! can anyone help me?
BTW i'm swedish and only 14 so i might misspelled something..

What version of After Effects? Have you installed the recent updates? What operating system? What kind(s) of source footage? Has this ever worked before? What other software are you running? Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed? Are you rendering with OpenGL?

Seeking a document management and file sharing solution for an online client portal

Late last year our developers created a Member’s Portal for a client’s website (built with WordPress) enabling Members to have a secure area for a discussion forum and crucially, secure
document storage and access, and file-sharing. The WordPress plugin chosen for the Portal was WP-Client.
We have a problem though and I wonder if you or anyone can help?
Basically, the solution was supposed to be like Dropbox or Google Drive but within the Portal but with slight differences. The problem is that the current solution we have isn’t like either
and has various flaws which make it unpopular with most members. It uses free software called kcfinder – see
http://kcfinder.sunhater.com/ as the basis for the file management systems.
So we are seeking to change the file management system. This system must do the following:
It’s got to be intuitive e.g. the action open or download must be ‘typical’ (it is not so in kcfinder you have to right click to download for instance
You must be able open an Office document (especially Word, Excel and Powerpoint) online in situ within the portal. Currently in kcfinder you have to download it.
You must be able to edit it online. Currently you have to download it, open it, edit it, re-upload it and overwrite it.
The client uses Sharepoint (I think that’s part of MS Office 365) and wants to be able to I think drag docs from there straight into the Portal file management system (I think at the moment they have to download a file from Sharepoint to their hard drive
and then upload to kcfinder.
We are currently investigating using a WP plugin for Google Drive

However having loaded the plugin, the developer has found that two issues remain that so far defeat us:
Firstly, and this seems to be applicable to using Google Drive outside the portal as well as in it - you can’t edit Word docs online in Google Drive without creating a Google Doc. This means we get duplicate docs which we don’t want – and they’re in
the wrong format. We want Word and no duplication. The members/users don’t have time to delete and change the format back to Word. I guess the same applies to other Office docs.
Second, apparently you can’t create a new folder in Google Drive in the portal.
So my question for this forum is really what can you suggest, either as a fix to the Google Drive solution or is there a totally different plugin or set up we can use? Ideally it should
be Office-based or friendly since most of our users use Microsoft Office.
The other proviso is that it must be affordable. We/client cannot afford the $10 per user per month that some systems charge. The attractiveness of the Google option is not only the wide
use of Google Docs (notwithstanding the fact that you can't open Word in GD instead it creates a duplicate in GD) but the fact that the plugin is cheap.

Documents to Go file transfer problems

Hello all. I found this forum and I hope I can get some help. I am a long-term Palm user and based upon what I've been reading about Palm,
I decided I needed to find a new phone. Also, Windows has developed some syncing problems and all that I can read about Treo's suggest
that Palm will not provide any future updates.
Documents to go is a key aspect of my Palm usage. I have about 50 windows files (word, excel, text) that I use as small databases for things like CDs or DVDs in my collection, addresses, book titles. Having these files when I travel or shop is a real convenience.
When I read that Documents to Go was available on the BB, I thought I had a found my next smart phone. I purchased the new Tour phone on Thursday.
I now learn that there is no sync program for Documents to Go files for the BB. In my opinion, the Documents to Go product, without the ability to sync files (who could possilby remmeber to update one of 50 files?) I believe DataViz has misrepresented their BB product.
I purchased the Premium version and managed to install it over the air. I am now back to the standard version since the applications updater over wrote the premium version with the standard version
I still have not managed to transfer a file from my Windows to the BB and see in on Documents to Go. I have the memory card working with the USB - I can see files on the BB. I have managed to transfer some jpg pics and I can see them with the media viewer. I can drag a .doc file to my BB and see that it has been transferred. The problem is that I cannot find it when I open Word to Go. I can create a new file with Word to Go, but I cannot find it anywhere using Windows explorer. I don't think I am confusing the device memory and the card memory.
When using Documents to go with the Palm, the Windows application maintains a list of files to be synced and each time you add a new file, it is converted to a new format, smaller, that works on the Palm. I don't see any way that the existing BB software can do this.
I have to also figure out how to live with MS Outlook and use the BB calendar function. If I cannot get Documents to Go to work, I am going to give up and take my new phone back to Verizon. It is simply not worth it to change at this time. I'll wait until Verizon supports the iPhone or until there is a different solution I have lots of friends who are always glowing over their iPhones, but I cannot change to AT&T, at least not for a while, also their coverage is poor compared to Verizon, at least where I live.

Part 1
Ok, so I have DTG premium for blackberry and I was having trouble installing it on my phone as well. Everytime I used the application loader in Desktop Manager (DTM) it would erase the premium version. Here is what I had to do to fix this situation:
1. On your phone, go to Options>Advanced Options>Applications, highlight DTG, press menu and delete. Let it delete the app and it should ask to reboot the phone...let it. If it doesn't, pull out the battery for 30 seconds, put it back in and let it boot up.
2. Find this folder on your computer: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\ and open up the folder with has your device software. Mine says: "8330-v4.5.0.160_P3.4.0.41" but yours could be different depending on your phone's model number and software version. In there, there is a file called DocumentsToGo.alx. Delete the file extension ".alx"...this is so that DTM can't recognize the file.
3. Go into DTM>Application Loader>Add/Remove Programs and make sure DTG does not show up in the list anymore.
4. Now go back and install the software OTA like you did before (if you can't, let me know and I can send you the loader files which you can copy to your media card and install from there; just let me know what version you have 1.007?). Activate the product with your serial number, etc.
This should prevent DTM from deleting the current version off your phone.
Part 2
Finding your documents on the media card should be fairly simple. Open up word to go and select "open a file ". Click on "media card" if that is where your file is and go to the folder where you have stored it. This should work and I'm not sure why you can't find the files. You've probably tried this, but go to Options>Media Card and make sure Media Card Support is set to On. Save it.
The syncing unfortunately is not available for DTG on blackberry so I can't help you there. Sorry!

Time Machine and File Vault problems

Hi,
Since I converted to Mac more than a year ago, I turned my file vault on (although I learned in the meantime that it is not actually necessary....)
I now recently bought the time Capsule and found out that the Time Machine doesn't go well with the File Vault turned on. It does back up the home folder only when logged out and I don't get the hourly backups for single files either.
I then tried to turn File Vault off, but get the error message that I haven't got enough space on my hard disk (which I have). This message led me to this article here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1974
I am really not an expert and not too confident to play around with accounts, backups and so on, so I really don't want to go down the described route.
For me, it looks like a bug in OS X, I should be able to turn File Vault off with the click of a button. Also, why is the File Vault / Time Machine conflict nowhere mentioned ? I was playing round with TM to recover a single file, but this wasn't possible, that's why I went to explore the issue further...
I now just want to turn off File Vault and finally want to use my TC normally.
Who can help ?

....so, it seems to work now.
I did eventually go through the routine of backing up my home folder manually on the TC, then I created a new account, copied everything back, deleted the old account, and so on, as described in the link above.
I did not turn on the File Vault, activated TM and backed the whole lot up via Ethernet, switched back to wireless and TM seems to do the trick now.
I have now access to single folders and files when I go back in time in TM, instead of the whole backup only.
This seems to be the only way TM & TC are working properly, why is this conflict between File Vault and TM nowhere mentioned ?

Contact and Calendar sync problems on iPhone and iPad

Here is the deal. I have an iPhone and iPad. Everytime I sync one, then the other I get the message that the iPhone or iPad is sync'd with a different user. I am the only one on this PC and only one account. And the Contacts and Calendar are unchecked for sync every time. I have to manually check them. It is like my iPad and iPhone do not like to be sync'd to the same Apple account. I want information for contacts and calendar to be the same on both. Advice????

The iTunes account has nothing to do with syncing contacts and calendar events with a supported address book and calendar app on your computer, but it does have something to do with syncing iTunes content.

After Effects Rendering Problem and RAM Preview Problem

I posted a question about this yesterday but I thought I would repost it with more detail!
I have a restless issue here with rendering and RAM preview. I am simply trying to create a viral ad which uses the cloning effect I achieved with masking for my college coursework and I have completed the process of creation but I have ran into problems. The RAM preview will only play up to a certain point then it will just stop and this effects the final render because it gets to the point in the rendering where the RAM preview stops and then a message will pop up saying the rendering has failed or something? (Screenshots Below)
I have tried RAM previewing just one of the three videos I am using and it still stops at the same point.
I am using .avi files and have tried converting to .mov, .mp4, .wmv all of which didn't work.
I am using After Effects CS4 ver 9.0.0.346
My computer specs
AMD SEMPRON processor 2.7Ghz (single core)
2GB RAM (I know its not alot ;))
ATI Radeon HD 5600 512mb
Creative audigy 2 sound card
Windows XP Serivice Pack 3
It's quite urgent and I hope someone can help!

With just 2GB of RAM, I'm impressed that you can generate that much of a RAM preview. RAM previews use RAM. When they run out, they stop.
Have you tried rendering the clip using the Render Queue. If so, does it also report an error at a similar point? If it renders correctly from the queue, you're done. If it doesn't, you probably have a corrupt source file.

[solved] Gnome 3.6 : brightness, battery and background

In addition to gdm freezing, here are the other problems I have:
- Changing brightness does not work anymore (from hotkeys or brightness extension)
- Remaining battery power does not show when unplugged
- Background stays gray whatever I select in the settings
Let me know if you have any fix for these issues.
Note that I start gnome-session with slim instead of gdm.

One more problem: the keyboard settings panel crashes and I cannot change keyboard layout anymore.

Reinstalling gnome-settings-daemon did the trick (it removed the deprecated "gnome-settings-daemon-intel-backlight")

My apologies for the slight necro-bump but I did a little digging in the wiki and found this very helpful piece of info:
For any users that don't have any of the default folders such as Pictures, Downloads, etc, you can install and run:
pacman -S xdg-user-dirs
xdg-user-dirs-update
everything in the Gnome places menu will be sorted and putting pictures in the 'Pictures' folder works!

My AOL account on Firefox got hacked and I lost all contacts and file folders. Is there anyway I can find a backup file and reload??

My AOL account is on Mozilla/firefox, I do not have a disk loaded version. Unfortunately, I stupidly gave a "AOL Support" service my password, they got into my account, sent emails to my contact list, and cleared out my contacts as well as my saved folders. I immediately changed my password, but still lost the files.
Is there a procedure I can use to recover those AOL files??

You should contact AOL directly. They probably make backups every so often. Might not be up-to-date, but it's a better bet than combing through old cache files on your PC.

For the photos, only if you have a backup in iCloud or on you computer.
For the apps, from your backup or you can redownload from the iTunes store at no charge.

OS X Server 3.01 Install and File Sharing Problem(s)...

Greetings...Apologies in advance for the lenght of this post...but I wanted to provide as much info as possible to the community to see if someone can see what I may be doing wrong.
My goal: Replace an existing iMac running Mavericks Server v3.01 that I use for Open Directory & file sharing with a new Mac Mini Server (late 2012) running Mavericks Server v3.01. Once new server is working and users defined...I will copy the users data from the iMac to the mac Mini server...then re-purpose the iMac as a simple client (bound to the new Mac Mini server).
Before we get to what I have been trying...I guess I should ask a few basic questions:
Can you have 2 Mavericks servers on the same Local network?
Can you have 2 servers as OD Masters on the same local network?
Are there any "Best Practices" I can follow to set up the new server on a local network that already has a server on it?
Here is what I have tried:
First off...I assign a static IP address to the Mac Mini on the router and disable the WiFi on the mac mini. I am using a direct ethernet cable connection from the mac mini to the router.
Next, I intall Mavericks client and configure that. I download Sever from the App store and install it. After it is installed...I run the "ChangeIp -CheckHostName" command in a terminal window and it reports that the "Names are the same" or something to that effect.
Next up...I turn on Open Directory and set up a OD Master...using essentially all the defaults. I then turn on file sharing and set up a share for the "Users" folder and set that share to use AFP & SMB and to also use it for Home folders.
I then set up a test user as a "Local Network user" and specify that the users home folder is on the "Users" sharepoint.
Once that is done. I logoff the admin account on the server. I then go to my macbook pro and bind it to the server (Users/Login options). I see the server identified as "Mac-Mini.home", select that and it shows a green dot next to the server...which I interpret as it was bound successfully.
I then log in to the newly created network user from newly bound macbook pro. No errors are reported and I seem to be functioning fine. I can use Safari.
As a functional test (lame ... probably) I try to log in from a bound client, save a text text file to the documents folder. Log out as the user on the bound client...Then I log in as that user on the server to see if I can edit/update that same file from thedocuments folder.
However, when I launch the TextEdit app on the bound client, it appears briefly on the Dock...then crashes with a system error. I tried to read the error...but it looks greek to me. I did see something to the effect "operation not permitted...".
I logoff the bound macbook pro. go to the server and log in as that newly created local network user. I get logged in. I am able to launch Text edit when logged in as the user. I can add text...save the test file to the document folder. Everything looks good. I just cannot seem to log in as the user from both the bound client and the server and have it work normally.
So...I am obviously not doing something either in the correct order, or not configuring a service correctly...something I am doing wrong.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

A NAS should work. A proper file server will cache active files in memory. So it's not obvious use of SSD storage will speed your service. In any case figure out how to back it up and most important how you will recover after a disaster requiring full recovery.
