[Solved]grub2 didnt install correctly suck at grub shell

I upgraded from grub to grub2 and now Im stuck at the grub shell.
I have tried this from my usb live install :
#root
#mount  /dev/sda5   /mnt  (sd5 is my root partition)
#mount /dev/sda1  /mnt/boot
# mount -t proc none /mnt/proc
# mount -t sysfs none /mnt/sys
# mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
#chroot /mnt
#pacman -S grub2
#grub-mkconfig -0 /boot/grub/grub.cfg
I look like the upgrade didnt upgrade because when i reboot computer it says gnu grub version 0.97 which isnt grub2

Let me give you the url to check: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Grub2
(You have to tell grub-install where you want to install grub.)

I tried to install the new version of itunes. it didnt download correctly. i uninstalled itunes and tried to download it again but I keep getting a message that the "apple device support " didnt download correctly and keeps showing me "windows error code 1114.

    Many thanks.
If it's saying it can't find the iTunes.msi or iTunes64.msi, we should try the following procedure.
    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page).
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
    (2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • [SOLVED]Unable to install grub "couldn't find /mnt/boot/grub/menu.lst"

Ok so I was trying to install windows after I had arch installed, used an ubuntu cd to use gparted to create a partition, tried to go to the windows installation but it would endlessly send me back to restart the installation even after succesfully writting all files...
So now I decided to not install it, went back into ubuntu/gparted, deleted the partition and rejoined the space with my main arch partition and then selected the "boot" flag to boot...
Cannot boot, grub its still on /boot/ but the MBR its obviously tempered with by windows ( which coincidentally couldn't even find itself after writing mbr to its liking....*sigh* ).
So I try to use my arch install cd to reinstall grub but i get this:
"couldn't find /mnt/boot/grub/menu.lst is grub installed?"
I tried to use the select packages thing to make sure the cd is mounted and mounts fine but it keeps getting me that error message. I managed to boot to my system just fine with arch root=/dev/sda1 but obviosly the kernell does not has my nvidia module which means I can't get into x which means i am using links and since my grub is not loaded i can't even get framebuffer so this is rather inconvenient.
Im sure im missing a very simple and stupid thing but im so annoyed my brain must be saying "ok im done somebody else figure it out". I still have a backup copy of my grub menu.lst I made before. Do I just delete /bood/grub/ and try again? Am I missing something on the install procedure to be able to rewrite grub? Can I just do it from the command line or with pacman? Any help appreciate it thanks.

If you can get into your arch and cli then you should just be able to reinstall grub with
    install-grub /dev/sda
    or reinstall grub with
    pacman -S grub
if the package is messed up or missing.

  • Itunes will not install correctly on my laptop, how do i solve this problem?

When I try to download iTunes on to my laptop I end up with the following message:

A complete uninstall/reinstall of iTunes and related software components is worth a try (7s can indicate trouble with other software components like Apple Application Support). See the following documents for instructions:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

  • [Solved] Grub2 - Error: no such partition

    I have setup a multi-boot environment - Debian, Arch, Fedora and Win8
The Debian Grub2 is installed on the MBR. Fedora and Arch Grub2s are installed on the partitions. So I chainload the Arch grub from the Debian Grub with
    menuentry "Arch Linux" {
    set root=(hd1,msdos9)
    chainloader +1
    The arch partition is
    # ls /dev/disk/by-label/ -la
    total 0
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 140 Apr 19 23:57 .
    drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 120 Apr 20 2013 ..
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 19 23:57 arch -> ../../sdb9
This has been working for a long time. At some point I updated the Arch boot via a chroot. Along with updating the Debian install.
Now when I try boot the Arch install I get the message Error: no such partition after selecting the Arch Linux option from the Debian grub.
I am still able to chroot to /dev/sdb9 and perform system maintenance. I just can't boot into it.
This may also be important when run from the chroot environment
    # grub-install --force --recheck /dev/sdb9
/usr/sbin/grub-bios-setup: warning: File system `ext2' doesn't support embedding.
/usr/sbin/grub-bios-setup: warning: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..
    Installation finished. No error reported.
    Am I missing something?

i am using my bootloader the way that works for me
as long as the bios and grub have the disks in the sam eorder, the way grub currently works means there is no issue.
i have been running this kind of setup before grub2.
all that has happened here is that i mistook a grub issue for an arch issue. and because arch is a secondary distro, it did not matter to me how quickly the issue was solved.

  • (SOMEWHAT SOLVED) grub2 finds and boots windows 7 but NOT arch

I installed arch on a new system. I have 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate. I installed arch skipped bootloader, chrooted into system and installed grub2 and installed. My system is btrfs. I do not have a seperate swap or home partition. OS-prober is installed.  I have another system with btrfs and grub2 and all works fine. When I run grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg I get this
Keyboard is not working properly on other computer so I cannot insert code brackets.
    Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-linux
    Found initrd image: /boot/initramfs-linux.img
No volume groups found   (what does this mean)
Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1
    done
Again boot and root partitions are btrfs. Grub2 is the bootloader and it does support btrfs at least the version in the repos a month ago did. I have feeling this might be the problem but I do not know why. Windows 7 boots successfully by the way. No Arch Linux
Edit: Backed up boot partition. Made the partition ext4 and cp'd it all back and still no luck. I converted it because ran the grub-mkconfig again and I got everything above but also I got an unknown filesystem error.  Converting it back to btrfs...
Edit 2: I am writing this from within windows but grub2 now shows Arch in the the menu. (no gui on this install yet) After what feels like 100 grub-installs and grub-mkconfigs it is all working. I still have two questions. For like half a second I see a file not found and I think it is a *.mod in /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc directory. (i have good eyes). What could this be? Secondly, what does no volume groups mean? Marking this somewhat solved.

I'd just ask checking the grub.cfg file to see if the device id entries for arch in the grub menu are correct.
In my case, I use ubuntu's grub2 and each time I have to update grub for some reason, it wont get the partition right for the arch entry.

  • [SOLVED] - grub2 hide/unhide

A mate has two win98 and one win95 on his first hard disk and a second hd for - ubuntu. To get M$ to see the correct C disk, grub legacy stanzas for any one of the win9x have always had to include two hide and one unhide command.
Ubuntu comes with grub2 and I thought I'd try super grub disk first and see whether I can boot all win9x - but no. SGD sees them but does not hide/unhide the relevant partitions so that it always boots the first win9x.
A bit of googling found parttool as part of grub2 command line possibilities which has a hidden+/- feature.
I won't be able to try this on his computer until this pm:
    1) boot from SGD
    2) go into CLI
    3) use parttool to hide/unhide the relevant partitions (say hd0,2)
    4) set root (hd0,2)
    5) chainload +1
    6) boot
And I should be good to go. Am I on the right track? Any advice of course welcome
    PS.:
This is more of an exploratory/note taking thread with a view to a proper wiki entry if I succeed as there is nothing on google or the web out there that applies to grub2 CLI stuff.
Last edited by toad (2010-04-21 13:41:31)

Okay, this is solved, parttool did the trick on the grub CLI.
The following sequence hides the first two C disks and boots off the third - something super grub disk was not able to do automagically
    parttool hd0,1 hidden+ boot-
    parttool hd0,2 hidden+ boot-
    parttool hd0,3 hidden- boot+
    set root=hd0,3
    chainloader +1
    boot

  • ITunesHelper was not installed correctly. Error 7  Help!! My itunes worked yesterday.

My itunes wont open without an error message that says itunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall itunes Error 7 (Windows error 14001) What has caused this and how do I get my itunes back????

after i researched this issue for several days and i emailed apple support this is what i did and it really worked.  somewhere i saw on a post to download revo uninstaller because it gets rid of all aspects of a program.  i downloaded the revo uninstaller pro.  you get a 30 day free trial.  i uninstalled everything apple.  there is a place on there where you check what scale of scan to use.  the first time i used medium on the first few items and advanced on the rest.  the advanced scan really went through each and every file after the so called uninstall and found traces of the programs. i had to check boxes beside files that had traces and removed them all. (I ended up having to do this twice because the first time i did this the error box kept popping up when i reinstalled, so my advice is to choose advanced each and every time.  also after the first time, that box popped up during the reinstall of itunes that said i needed permission to install something.) Next thing i did was checked on the recent updates and installs on my computer.  windows/ms had installed 3 things in those automatic updates.  i uninstalled all 3.  i'm convinced that there is a corrupt file in there somewhere.  there are several fixes and scans on the left side of revo, and i ran several of them just to check.  the final one on the bottom was an evidence remover.  since everywhere i have seen says to remove all traces, apparently when you empty the recycle bin it really doesnt get rid of it.  so i did the evidence remover.  it took all day.  almost 9 hours.  next, apple support had suggested i go to windows update site and download the latest version of there update software.  i was wary, but i did this update.  i restarted my computer.  next i went back to apple and reinstalled itunes.  during the reinstall, the box that said i needed permission didn't pop up.  after the install the error box didnt pop up.  and when i went to itunes, everything was there.  i cant tell you which exact step fixed it, but something did.  good luck to you.  i emailed the apple support guy back and mentioned the revo uninstalled.  i'm pretty sure that advanced scan really did the better delete than just uninstalling.

  • ITunes stopped working on Windows 8. Error message 7: iTunes was not installed correctly.

I have Windows 8. Originally iTunes worked fine, then it couldn't update (said it was unsuccessful). Then it stopped working, so I (after much research) tried a long and tiresome method of removing all Apple products and re-installing them. I did this 3 times and it eventually worked and has been working fine for a few months. Recently, when trying to update, it has said "update successful", but when checking for new updates, finds the same one it supposedly just installed, wanting to install it again. For a few weeks now it has not worked at all, saying "error message 7: iTunes was not installed correctly" when I attempt to open iTunes. I can't bring myself to go through the whole process again of uninstalling and reinstalling everything, it took hours and it clearly doesn't solve the problem. I have no idea what the problem is. Reinstalling only iTunes doesn't work. The support pages have no advice available for my crappy version of Windows.
    Please help me!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
It shouldn't really take that long to do, assuming it goes smoothly.
