[SOLVED] Help required to boot fresh installation. New to GPT.
Hi all,
I have been using Gnu/Linux since 1998 and Arch since 2007.
I stopped playing the pacman gamble game and had left my system for a few months between updates. I reached a state where I thought it was easier to reinstall and decided to back up my home dir and simplify my partitions back to a single / and just /tmp, /var and /home on separate drives. Also it seemed a good time to switch to GPT and use Syslinux boot loader.
I have followed the Official and Beginner's Installation instructions but cannot boot into my newly installed system. I have used /dev/ designations and UUID designations in my syslinux.cfg but when I try to boot into the new system I either get errors saying my root is a raid member or there is no /sbin/init found.
I have then tried repartitioning using standard MBR partitions but get Missing OS errors. Is there a simple path I should follow?
I am using the following drives......
/dev/sdb Kingston 30GB SSD
/dev/sdb1 /
/dev/sda Western Digital 160GB
/dev/sda1 /tmp
/dev/sda2 /var
/dev/sda3 SWAP
/dev/sda4 /home
/dev/sdc Seagate 2TB
/dev/sdc1 RAID Member
/dev/sdd Western Digital 2TB
/dev/sdd1 RAID Member
/dev/sde Western Digital 1TB
/dev/sde1 RAID Member
/dev/sdf Samsung 1TB
/dev/sdf1 RAID Member
I have installed Mint 14 and Neptune 3 on the same drives with no issues but I want to keep using Arch. I am at a loss for what to do next.
I am considering removing all drives except the 30GB SSD and the 160GB /tmp,/var,SWAP,/home drive and trying again.
Can any one hold my hand through this..... please?! I really do not want to drop Arch as it is for me *the* Linux distro.
Honestly though I would appreciate any help. I am going slightly mad!

I apologise now for any lack of info but it is late and I need sleep.

Looking into your hd setup, i would recommend: GPT + SYSLINUX
as the / partition.
You say you already tried this setup and couldn't boot it, but it is as easy as it gets. I must say that arch is a "do it yourself distro", so we are not supposed to hold your hand. BUT, we can help you understand what you did wrong, if you missed something, etc.
If you are able to, you can post the steps you made in your attempt to install arch, and then someone will help you with that!
REMEMBER, you should always read the wikis and search the forum to see if anyone gets the same errors as you before posting.
Thanks for the reply. It is kind of you to 'help me understand' what I did wrong!
I tried again with a different partition set-up and re-read the wikis thoroughly. This time it has worked and I am now booted into my GPT+SYSLINUX Arch system.
From what I can see I needed a separate /boot partition on the same disk (30GB SSD) as the / partition. D'oh! It is the simple things that seem to trip me up.
Anyhow, thanks again,

[SOLVED] Pacman is broken on fresh installation
I've just performed a fresh installation that seemed to go fine, following the Official Arch Linux Install Guide. However, I get the following during my first login:
Arch Linux 2.6.39-ARCH (myhost) (tty1)
myhost login: root
Password:
[root@myhost ~]# pacman -Sy
:: Synchronizing package databases...
error: local database version is too old
error: failed to init transaction (database is incorrect version)
try running pacman-db-upgrade
error: transaction already initiated
[root@myhost ~]#
I realize the error recommends that I run pacman-db-upgrade, but it seems very out-of-the-ordinary to encounter this error after having installed fresh with all default options. Could someone give me a hand?

benash wrote:Thanks. I appreciate the responses. I ran pacman-db-upgrade, and that appeared to fix the problem. I'm now having some trouble downloading packages (1 out of 10 seems to be failing), but I just found the documentation on selecting appropriate mirrors.
What exactly do you mean by "failing"? Please post the errors you get.
But first, grab a fresh mirrorlist http://www.archlinux.org/mirrorlist/ and try to update again.
I agree with picking an updated mirror. If packages are "failing," then the mirrors may be out of sync. Also, the list of mirrors included on the ISO CD may be out of date. -
Help evaluating complex boot camp installation
I need to do a bit tricky boot camp installation, and would appreciate if somebody could evaluate before hands whether the plan outlined below should work, or if i should try some different approach:
Current setup is Tiger with two OS X partitions (16gb root, rest mounted under /Users)
Desired setup is Tiger with two OS X partitions, AND a Windows Vista partition.
Plan is:
- Make disk image of the current (Tiger) root partition, and backup of /Users
- Boot from install DVD, re-partition the internal disk to single partition, restore the disk image to the single partition
- Upgrade to Leopard
- Install Boot Camp and Windows Vista
- Use 'diskutility resizeVolume' to split the Leopard partition to two
- Overwrite the first partition with the original Tiger disk image
- Restore Data to the second partition
How about? Will Boot Camp continue to operate when i overwrite Leopard system with the Tiger disk image, and when i split the single partition to two pieces? Or is there some other recommended way for doing this?
Thanks,
Henri Karapuu'diskutility resizeVolume' should had naturally been 'disktool'. Also sorry about the layout, for some reason single dashes in front of each line got eaten.

[SOLVED] No keyboard on booting fresh install (encrypted LVM)
I've just installed Arch (x86_64) on my desktop again, and used LVM on top of a single encrypted partition (with boot separate and unencrypted). Everything seemed to go okay, but when I boot and am prompted for a passphrase to unlock the hard drive, my keyboard ceases to work.
The NumLock key is lit until just before, so I think something messes it up, rather than it never working to start with. I thought maybe it was something keymap-related (as this is loaded just before) so I removed "keymap" from HOOKS in mkinitcpio.conf and deleted my choice in rc.conf but this had no effect.
Other than that I'm not sure where to go from here, I've tried the very obvious of unplugging and replugging the keyboard, but that was no help.
Any help appreciated!
EDIT: Just noticed the wiki article on encryption, which mentions adding "usbinput" to HOOKS. Didn't help.
EDIT: Solved. I forgot to append the ".img" to the end of the mkinitcpio args.

HELP: Impossible to boot from installation CD
Hello,
We were given an iMac G5 at christmas. I had to reinstall OSX 10.3 a couple of days ago: that worked out just fine... except that all the user passwords were changed! So I tried booting on the installation CD again to change them back... except that even when I hold down the C key, my computer never boots on the CD: I always end up on the screen where you have to choose a user, and since none of the previous passwords work, I'm just stuck there.
Is there something wrong with the installation CD? Is there any other way?Hi tarzanette,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Insert the Install CD 1 on reboot while holding down the option-key. This will bring up the startup manager where you can select the install CD as boot volume. -

Help required for set up of new Airport Extreme!
I bought a new Airport Extreme and was assured the set up was super easy compared to the Linksys wireless router I had previously. With my luck, it isn't!
I basically never get to the first step of the airport utility because either the wireless connection can't be found, or the Airport Express can't be found by my computer (I get either of the two error messages). I am able to see the airport xxxxxxx network, but get the error messages even when the computer's airport eventually connects to it. Can someone help and tell me what I am doing wrong? I have tried resetting my internet modem and the Airport Extreme to no avail, I always get the yellow amber flashing light.
Thank youSEE MY ANSWERS BELOW:
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
o Your network should show up in the list under Preferred Networks with Security = None CHECK
o Remember any network this computer has joined (checked)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > TCP/IP tab

o Configure IPv6 Automatically CHECK - CHANGED IT
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > DNS tab
o DNS Servers = (your ISP's DNS server(s) IP address(es) should be displayed here) If this is blank, may be the reason that you are not able to access the Internet when connected wirelessly ... and may indicate a problem with the AirPort card in your iBook I CAN SEE 3 SERIES OF CODES
Following this, I can still find my network, connect to it (although I got a timeout the first couple of times) but still have no internet access. The airport has been working fine when I was using the Linksys in the past.
Can we try anything else? -

Good day, first of all.
Tough new to Arch, i have /some/ experience with gnu/linux, and this is beyond me. I am running arch x86_64 with gnome, loving it. But if i choose an image as a wallpaper i get nothing but the color. Not even the gnome basic images would work, just the colors. Been around looking for a solution for about 3 hours, i appeal to your kindness.
Any ideas?

Fresh Installation Boot Errors
I'm new to trying to work with Solaris 10, and to a lot of Solaris in general, so while I'd normally be happy to do a lot of reading (and have tried searching for answers on google a good deal already), I'm having a problem after a fresh installation of Solaris 10 on a Sparc T3-1 server that I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction to solve.
During the install I told the text installer I wanted to do a ZFS installation using both of my disks (only 2) in a mirrored configuration. I selected the default set of core system packages.
After the install seemed to be done and the system rebooted, I'm getting the following when it comes up:

[SOLVED] Several problems after fresh installation
Hi guys,
i just did a fresh installation of arch and every times i must do something i get this error:
cannot remove, read, edit and etc : read-only file system
So i searched for a workaround.. but i must do this after every boot
This is it:
mount -oremount,rw /
There's a way to fix this forever?
Often when i need to edit some files, like /etc/pacman.conf or xorg config file, arch tell me: You do not have write permission to modify... that file
Searched another workaround.. and also this i must do every time after each boot:
sudo chown -R black /directory of file that i'm trying to edit/
I hope to fix this annoying problems, with your help.
Thanks guys,
Gabriele.

Do you have any clue? Have several issues on a new MacBookPro but it's propably "PEBKAC" made..
UffeIt is Command+r or for the online internet system it is Command+option/Alt+r keys. Then you use Disk Utility to erase the macintosh partition, from the built in recovery hd, or you can repartition the drive as one partition from the online system.
To actually get to the online internet system you have to hold that key combo down until you see a globe on the screen. Otherwise it will just boot from the built in recovery hd on the internal drive. -
