[SOLVED]: Install OracleSolaris 11 on the DELL laptop

Hi, ALL,
I don't know if this question belongs here, but here goes...
I downloaded an Oracle Solaris 11 image and trying to install the system on my DELL Inspiron laptop.
The machine boots up but in the console mode. I can communicate with the installer up to the point where it shows text GUI screen and says:
Welcome To Oracle Solaris
Thanks for choosing to install Oracle Solaris!
At the point keyboard is dead. I can't press F2, I can't press ESC. I can't communicate with the installer thru the keyboard.
Now, I'm assuming that since I didn't boot to the GUI installer, the installer does not support the video card I have in the laptop as explained in the installer documentation.
And so I have 2 questions:
1. Is my assumption correct? If yes, what are the chances that this install will boot the GUI/GNOME after the install? I successfully installed Linux on this machine...
2. How do I work around the keyboard issue?
Thank you for any pointer you guys can give.

Hi, Pascal,
My disk has GPT label and my partitions was made with "parted".
Can fdisk/format understand this kind of scheme?
Now, when in parted I typed "help mkpart", I did see the "solaris" as possible "fs-type". So could you tell more of what is not supported? Or maybe it is only in mkpartfs?
[EDIT]
Here is my partitioning scheme for reference:
Partition table: GPT
Number - 1, Start - 1MiB,     End - 3MiB,       Size - 2MiB,             File System - ,                    Name - grub, Flags - bios_grub
Number - 2, Start - 3MiB,     End - 131MiB,     Size - 128MiB,        File System - ext2,              Name - boot, Flags -
Number - 3, Start - 131MiB,  End - 2000MiB,    Size - 1869MiB,     File System - linux-swap(v1), Name - swap, Flags -
Number - 4, Start - 2000MiB, End - 250000MiB, Size - 248000MiB, File System - ext4,              Name - rootfs, Flags -
All partitions are primary ones.
[/EDIT]
[EDIT2]
I just tried to run "format -> fdisk". It looks like fdisk does not understand GPT partition scheme. Any other idea?
[/EDIT2]
[EDIT3]
The first hit on Google for "oracle solaris install gpt" gives Partitioning Your System - Installing Oracle Solaris 11.1 Systems. According to section "
Guidelines for Partitioning a System During an Interactive Installation", "existing GPT partitions or DOS partitions are retained by default and displayed by the installer" but it simply not true.
When I double click the installer, and go to step 2, all I see is one disk marked as "EFI Header Indicator". There is no partitions on that screen. And the text says: either use the whole disk or partition the disk.
[/EDIT3]
Thank you.

How do you install a tar.gz package that's been downloaded to my desktop (lxde)?
Or for that matter from a CD/DVD?
I can uncompress it ok but nothing I've tried can actually install the package.
If I use the install command then - where do you install packages to?

Perhaps you are looking for `pacman -U`, see `man pacman` for details.

Is the thunderbolt display compatible with Dell laptop (Latitude 6430)?

Since the specs for the Dell laptop (Latitude 6430) do not list ThunderBolt as one of the supported bus structures that means it does not have a ThunderBolt port to connect the ThunderBolt display to. Hence is not compatible.

  • Dell laptop headphone jack does not work when playing audio and video in Firefox 27

My problem is similar to the one posted in this thread: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/986978?esab=a&s=laptop+headphones+don%27t+work+with+firefox&r=2&fpa=1&as=s
I believe it has little to nothing to do with extensions.
I have just installed Firefox 27 on the Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop of a friend. She is an unsophisticated user who has a computer for email, simple web browsing, and watching YouTube and other online videos. Because she frequently seems to end up with junk on her machine, I wanted to switch her over to Firefox so I could install ad and script blockers that would hopefully slow down the frequency of adware and malware roosting in her system.
The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 3520 with an Intel celeron CPU (64-bit), running Windows 8. There are standard end-user applications installed (Adobe Reader, VLC Media Player, etc.), but no tweaking utilities, etc. The audio drivers are Cirrus Logic High Definition Audio.
I've been troubleshooting the laptop today trying to track down why the integrated speakers continue to work when the headphones are plugged in, with no sound coming through the headphones. Because I had run a series of virus / malware / adware scans just before installing Firefox, I thought I had mistakenly deleted some system audio files.
It finally became clear after toggling multiple settings, playing with Windows and Dell sound settings, and experimenting, that the headphone audio jack still works as it should in the system itself (for example, playing videos through VLC Media Player) and in Internet Explorer. It is only in Firefox that plugging in the headphones does not send audio through the headphones nor cut out the integrated speakers.
Sometimes there is a silencing of the integrated speakers for a few seconds, but then the audio kicks in again. (I am using YouTube and a certain movie streaming website to test the audio).
However, if the headphones are plugged in before starting the videos, the sound comes through the headphones, but unplugging the headphones, then reinserting them, stimulates problem again. Not only that, but then in YouTube the video will stall and can't be restarted until the page is reloaded.
Again, this is a fresh Firefox install of less than 24 hours, with only Adblock, Adblock Plus Pop-up Addition, Flashblock, and NoScript installed. There are no themes installed and most of the Options are the defaults that are set upon installation.
I have both disabled the add-ons and uninstalled them entirely before testing the headphone funtionality. In both instances the problem persisted. I've also uninstalled and let Windows re-install the Cirrus audio drivers.
Does anyone else have any insight into this problem, and any potential solutions other than "start in Safe Mode" and "reset Firefox"?

Firefox can switch audio devices within ~ a + or - 10 minute period or so (Just a guess). At which point it latches onto the audio device and will never change until the entire process is shutdown (read last paragraph, there is an exception)
Ive had this problem for a few months now, at least. And I switch back and forth from my sound system and my wireless USB headset.
If anything will fix this i believe it would be disabling "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" in the properties of your default audio device, but i doubt it. I think this is an issue regarding the code in firefox itself.
I'd like to see this turned into a default feature, being able to disable and enable the ability to stay on whichever device was the default at the time of launch, or to always play on the current default device, even if its changed. That or being able to choose a specific device/devices (WOULD LOVE TO THIS).
Other than that I dont really have a solution, and I kind of doubt anyone will unless its addressed in the next update.
Oh I thought of one solution that doesnt require restarting firefox, disable the current audio device and the sound will automatically switch to the next available device. Or possibly when a new device is introduced?? I havent done much testing on the matter though. This is just my best guess based on my personal experience with firefox.

  • Dell laptop running Vista cannot printap

The Dell laptop, which is running Vista, can "see" the EPSON Stylus C86 connected to the Airport Extreme, but cannot access to print to it. It can access the internet just fine. I have not installed any Airport utilities from the CD. Do I need to?

What version of the Airport Base Station are you using?
The Airport utility software for Windows isn't necessary, but installing Bonjour for Windows can simplify configuration of an Airport printer on the PC. Find Bonjour for Windows at:

  • Dell laptop won't connect to server.

I know this is an issue for others and I've tried my darndest. Here's the set up. I'm trying to get online with a Dell Laptop. The Dell laptop shows that it is connected to my Airport Express, but when I try to open Internet Explorer, I get the message saying,"not connected to the server." I do not have WEP on. Any ideas?

I solved the problem. For the others out there with the same problem, you need to open Explorer, then go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections and figure out what needs to be changed. You have to change your proxy, etc.

  • Can I use my time capsule to connect a Dell laptop to a remote hard drive?

I have a time capsule network at home for my apple computers. It works great I can even send jobs wirelessly to the printers from all my computers including the Dell laptop with Windows Vista. I would like to be able to back up the Dell laptop Windows Vista machine to a Western Digital My Book Mirror Edition storage system. I'm having problems with the Dell recognizing or finding the WD hard drive. Does anyone know if I can do this?

Yes it recognizes the WD when I directly connect the hard drive. Yes it is recognized on the Mac and the Dell but only in the Airport Utility software for windows nothing on the windows machine is able to recognize it and finally yes I have Bonjour loaded and two printers are working fine on my complete network of machines PC's as well as Apple machines. I tried every resource I could find online and I can't get the system to recognize the WD hard drive I'm stumped.

  • No IP address intermittently on Dell laptop when connecting to EA6400

Ever since I have a new EA6400 wireless router, my Dell Latitude laptop doesn't always get an IP address when connecting to the router. It's only a problem with the Dell, other devices connect without trouble. The Dell laptop doesn't have problems with any other routers it connects to. Any ideas...?
When connecting, the wireless icon in the tray sometimes shows a yellow exclamation mark saying 'No internet access'. The wifi status shows 'Limited' in that case. The solution is most of the times to turn off wifi completely, then turning it on again. This apparently forces a reconnection including a new IP address from the EA6400. My setup is pretty out of the box, no changes made to DHCP settings or other network related things. I'm puzzled...
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

  • Linking Dell Laptop to existing/working Airport Express wireless network

    Hi,
I'm trying to connect a Dell Laptop (Inspiron 2500) running on Windows XP to an existing and functionning Airport Express wireless network set up for my girlfriend's iBook. It works perfectly for the iBook.
I have outfitted the Dell with a D-Link wireless G USB adapter and I see the network (i have the password) and it says I am connected to the network (even says connection is very good).
However, when I open the internet browser, nothing.
The network set up is: Cable to RCA Digital modem (model DCM425) to Airport Express (via ethernet) and to computer.
I have tried playing around with the Dell Laptop settings (IP, DSN, etc ...) and I have called everyone involved (including Apple) to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,

    Thanks for the reply.
WEP is enabled. As far as the encryption, I'm not sure. I believe that it's 64-bit, as the password for the network is a five-letter word.
The funny thing, though, is that I had been using an IP address which I found on my girlfriend's Ibook, which allowed me to connect to her AEBS network, although the internet browser showed no connection.
Following directions from somebody else, I removed the IP address to enable DHCP, and then I was able to connect to other networks in the area (and the browser also connected to the internet) but I couldn't get onto her network anymore. Even with the password ...
    Any ideas?
If i'm supposed to upgrade to 128-bit, how should I go about doing that?
    Thanks again for the reply.
    What encryption are you using?
    Do you have WEP enabled?
The problem you are having probably lies with the
