Yeah that's what I meant. Try to burn a new cd at a slower speed. When the new one is done create a hashsum of the new burn and compare it to the iso you used to burn it with. I only say this because a few times in the past when I had sr0 errors while booting live cds it was because the disk was messed up and I had to burn it again.

  • Kernel panic won't go away and can't boot?

I am not sure what OS I have. It's an iMac and only a year and a half old. I know it doesn't have leopard and that's about it. Anyway, my problem started two days ago. I got the notification that updates were available so I went ahead and did it. I walked out of the office while it did its thing. Then I heard it say something like "Can't install updates". I was 2 rooms away so that may be wrong. Then it went to restart like normal but it did not boot up. It went to a gray screen with a black box in the middle that said you need to restart your computer in about 4 languages. Well, I did that seemingly a million times and it's still doing it. So I asked someone for help and he gave me these instructions,
    1. Restart, and hold down AppleOption+PR to reset the Pram
    2. Restart and hold down Apple+S once it brings you to a command prompt, type this:
    /sbin/fsck -yf
This command will run a file system check and repair any problems.
    3. Restart and hold down AppleOption+OF
when command prompt shows up on screen type:
    reset-nvram (then press Enter)
    set-defaults (then press Enter)
    reset-all (computer will reboot)
The problem comes at step two.. it will not allow me to type anything it. I get something that says "Package 0 didn't get HPET". I can type about 4 letters in and then it restarts that "package 0 didn't get HPET" so I actually can't get the /sbin/fsck -yf part in to even attempt step 3. I bought this computer from someone so I have to disc with it. I've left a voicemail to see if he can fix it or if he has the disc still.
I've never had an issue with this thing before and I've had it since August. It's been an awesome computer and then, this. I can't afford to have it fixed for a few weeks yet and I really need to be able to use it. Classes just started and I need access to my online ones. I was lucky to be able to use what I am on now but I've had to go to someone else's apartment to do so. ANY help would be wonderful. I'm ready to shoot the thing. LOL.

You will need the original OS X installer disc that came with the computer or the installer disc you used for the version of OS X presently installed. Since you've provided no machine information other than "iMac" and no information on the version of OS X you are using this advice may or may not work:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
If you cannot start the computer from an installer disc without getting a kernel panic, that means you have a hardware failure - most likely bad RAM.

  • [SOLVED] Kernel panic for an unknown reason

[Solved] Steps done to solve it:
    0. Panic because I couldn't play starcraft2 (this step is sooo important! ;)
    1. Updated my mirrorlist.
    2. Forced a refresh on the package list from the new mirrorlist. "pacman -Syy"
    3. Downgraded the kernel.
    4. Deleted the latest kernel package from the pacman cache.
    5. Updated the system. (pacman -Syu)
    6. Thanked lilsirecho for helping out!
    7. Profit
    Hi all
I just did a "pacman -Syu" this afternoon and after that I'm getting kernel panics for unknown reasons.
edit: I had kernel 3.0.4 befure syu and I have kernel 3.0.7 now. I tried downgrading wine and the kernel with no success.
It first happened when I tried to run StarCraft2 with wine. I even created a post looking for help because of that.
Later on I tested another game, just in case, and it crashed too.
Looks like a wine problem, right? Or even a graphics driver problem.
That's what I thought too. But then I tried to update with "yaourt -Syu --aur" and in the first package compression it freezed once again. And it does fail everytime I try to update with yaourt during the compression phase.
What do this situations have in common?
My opinion is that they all require a lot of resources. StarCraft 2 puts my PC at 100% almost all the time. The other game is pretty old, but it freezed during an "environment loading" phase, right when the map was loading. The compression phase of yaourt also consumes a lot of resources.
This is my view of this problem, but I could be completely wrong.
What I need is help finding what is the real source of this kernel panics. I don't know where to look for the logs or the error reports when a kernel panic occurs.
I hope someone can help me trace the problem somehow. I think I'm lost
    ty in advance.
    cheers!

Possibly caused by a mirror download.
Perhaps you need to revert kernel and insure you have the latest mirrorlist and then syu again.
When I saw your response I thought: "Why should that be true? I downgraded the kernel with no success. Doesn't make much sense".
But then I did what you said:
Downgraded the kernel back to 3.0.4.
Moved the latest mirrorlist.pacnew I had to be the mirrorlist in use.
    Then did a "pacman -Syyu".
And, miraculously, it works fine now.
How in the world did you know that could be the reason? It would have been the last possibility I would have thought about, no doubt about that
Thank you very much lilsirecho. Your post really helped me.
Not gonna mark this as SOLVED yet. Yesterday I marked my other thread as solved too soon and I regretted my decision.
I will leave a 1week time-frame to be 100% sure that it is fixed, just in case.

    Greetings,
    Questions:
    1. What version of the Mac OS are you running (Apple > About this Mac)?
    2. What version of the iOS are you running (Settings > About)?
    3. Do you use MobileMe/ iCloud or another server based sync solution like Google or Yahoo?
    4. Do other changes to synced information like Address Book content sync successfully back and forth?
Based on your description it sounds like you have a 1 way sync issue.  Events sync fine between the iOS devices and fine from the computer to the iOS devices but not from the iOS devices to the computer.
    Try:
Backup your computer and iOS devices before doing anything else:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
Ensure all the devices in use are fully up to date: Apple > Software Update / Settings > General > Software Update
Make separate backups of critical data:
    Backup your computer Addressbook: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AddressBook/4.0/en/ad961.html
    Backup your computer iCal: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2966
Reset syncing on your Mac: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627
Reply back if that does not resolve your issue.
    Hope that helps.

  • [SOLVED] Can not boot after mishap with clonezilla

    Hi
I was trying to back up my computer with Clonezilla. It kept telling me that the drive I was trying to back up (the only hard drive in my laptop and only has Arch Linux installed on it) had a GPT and MBR partition table. I thought that this was odd so booted back into Arch Linux and loaded up gparted and it said that the drive was MBR. So I ran clonezilla again and it said about a command to run to remove the GPT if you are sure that you are using MBR so I went ahead (stupidly) and ran it thinking that everything would be ok and now I can not boot back into my Arch Linux. I just get a black screen with GRUB and a flashing cursor. I think the command that I ran was either:
    gdisk -z /dev/sda
    or
    sdisk -z /dev/sda
I'm not too sure and I should have written it down or researched it first. (That will teach me.) I have booted the computer from a Knoppix DVD and can see all the partitions on the drive (root, swap and home) and also read all the data. I have tried to reinstall grub (install-grub /dev/sda deom the Arch install cd) but this has not worked. I hope that as will most things Linux I can fix this. Please can you point me in direction I need to go to fix this?
    Thanks
    Robert

    Hi
I have fixed it. I ran testdisk from Knoppix and let it write out the partition table again as MBR then reinstalled grub from the Arch Linux install CD by doing the following from with in grub:
    root (hd0,0)
    setup (hd0)
Lesson learnt. I'll read and research before just blindly running commands again. Thank you all for reading.
    Thanks

  • [SOLVED] kernel panic - no init found

    Hello:
After my last system update, (including kernel) two problems appeared. First the magic files problem, solved with pacman -Qo, delleting and reinstalling (perhaps it has something to do with this problem). Second, this kernel panic when I restarted the pc.
    failed to execute /init
kernel panic - no init found
    specify init= (or something similar)
I get only these lines as error, before is the message of the freed kernel memory.
At the moment I tried with the solutions that I have find at the forum:
    - Run with livecd, mount all (including boot, proc, sys, dev), chroot and
    mkinitcpio -p kernel26
    - Check if the partitions uuids are the correct ones in grub config.
    - Check if I have the symlink to asm in the includes, that someone report on the arch news that could be conflictive (I have a folder there).
    - Reinstall the kernel26, mkinitcpio, klibc, etc. all the stuff that I thought that could be related.
    - Specify in grub config init=/sbin/init, and check if the file was there-> there was a new message saying that also failed to execute /sbin/init
The problem persists, and google doesn't helps and in the forum I can't find an answer neither. I don't know what else I can do, so all help will be apreciated
    Thank you
    PD: sorry for my English
    SOLVED:
The problem was that mkinitcpio outputed an error with zgrep and I think that it wasn't changing nothing. I reinstalled gzip and no errors were reported, so the new ramdisk was created and now the system boots ok. The error with zgrep I think that it comes from my last upgrade, because I didn't have enough space and a lot of errors in a few packages appeared, the errors were cannot execute or file already exists in the system.
    Thanks for the answers.

Seems init is present in the initrd image (very small image?):
    1199 blocks
    /bin/kinit
    /bin/run-init
    /init
The initrd path I think it's also correctly setted up:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linux
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/bfb12545-43dd-49de-9a70-c8ab9926181c resume=/dev/sda5 ro
    initrd /kernel26.img
    # (1) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linux Fallback
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/bfb12545-43dd-49de-9a70-c8ab9926181c ro
    initrd /kernel26-fallback.img
I have one separate boot partition, as you say, sda2, and the filesystem/general partition is sda6. I tried to put this names instead the uuids too, but didn't worked.
    The fallback image neither helped.
I also tried to check if the partitions are ok (sda2 and sda6), with xfs_check and xfs_repair (filesystem it's xfs).

  • [SOLVED]Kernel Panic when removing (without unmounting) a NTFS Usb pen

    Hi,
I am new to Arch linux, and I really like it, but since today i got a problem that i can't solve by myself...
When I plugged my EXT4 or Fat32 usb pen, and remove it without unmounting nothing bad happens, nautilus close the window the icon disapears.. everything is normal.
But if I do the same thing with my Usb pen formatted (on Windows 7) with NTFS, a Kernel Panic appears with a NTFS error code...
It is normal or it is any way to solve the problem ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Luis Da Costa

I'll reinforce what .:B:. said, removing a device _before_ unmounting it is a very bad idea, you are asking for trouble if you keep doing it regularly and you will probably be here sooner rather than later asking for help to recover your files because of that.
Take my words as a friendly warning, this things have a tendency to come back to bite you at the worst of times, and trying to recover data will take you more time and effort that properly unmounting the device before removing it.

  • [SOLVED] Kernel panic at boot due to root FS not found

When I try to boot using a new kernel version (eg. 3.0.1 or 2.6.39), I get a kernel panic with an "init not found" error message. I haven't been able to get any more detailed error messages, but I assume that there's a problem with finding or mounting my root filesystem.
For now, I'm stuck with 2.6.38.7-1, which boots without any problems. (I keep trying the new kernel, then rolling it back using a Live CD.)
I have a shared EXT4 root and boot partition, and I'm using Grub 0.97. Other than that, I'm not sure what information would be helpful in tracking down this problem, and any help would be appreciated.

  • WORKAROUND/SOLVED: Kernel panic on Macbook Air 5,2 on Lion 10.7.5 on wake

Hi all. I had been getting plagued by kernel panics with my relatively new Macbook Air (which I otherwise have had no issues with) when I did the following in sequence:
While connected to a power supply, lock screen
    Close the lid
    Disconnect power supply
    Open the lid
For me, this seemed to have been caused by the Automatically adjust brightness option. To access it, go to System Preferences > Displays > Automatically adjust brightness, and uncheck the box. I also unchecked similar options that dim the screen before sleep in Energy Saver. This seems to have fixed it. I'm including the full kernel panic report -- if you're having problems with kernel panics, give it a try. I'm going to see for the next few days if this solves the issue. My guess is that this option and the display driver for this computer are really not playing well together in this version of Lion. I tried various other things:
    Disabling bluetooth
Using pmset to set the hibernatemode to 0 as well as 25
    Restting SMC
and none of them fixed it. This did, though, or at least it seems that way -- I am going to check for the next few days and see how it does. I am not running any third party kexts, though I do have a few third party launch agents for daemons, servers and such which have been installed via Homebrew. Feel free to comment. I am definitely a little underwhelmed by this kind of behavior coming from what is a several thousand dollar piece investment that is the most important piece of equipment for me to do my work on any given day, but if I can bypass it for now without too much of a loss in functionality, so be it.

As far as my question itself -- why does this happen? Has anybody had this issue on Lion and had it resolved on Mountain Lion?

  • [SOLVED] Kernel panic USB3 ExHDD (perhaps related to uas module?)

    Greetings fellow Arch users!
    Annoying problem:
Hitachi Touro Pro 1GB USB 3 external drive causing consistent, repeatable kernel panic on 3.15.2-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT. The same panic occurs whether the drive is already attached upon reboot or attached later. The same panic occurs whether this drive is attached to the front USB3 header or the rear of the case. The panic also occurs when all other external drives are removed from the machine. The drive is does not panic when attached by USB 2, but it is also not recognized by the system when attached to USB2.
Would prefer to post the photo I took, but unclear where online I could store it. Anyhow, the panic always says:
    kernel BUG at block/blk-core.c:2511!
invalid opcode: 0000 [#1} PREEMPT SMP
kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt
    Shutting down CPUs with NMI
My bios is updated (ASUSP8Z68-V PRO/GEN3, BIOS 3603). I searched the forums and noticed a recent, similar problem related to uas module https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=183190. I blacklisted the uas module, and also added the text install uas /bin/false to the blacklist.conf file. Updated the kernel (mkinitcpio -p linux afterword, then rebooted). However, note that the uas module is still listed under modules below. Perhaps I need to do something more to prevent this uas module from loading? It seems like blacklisting had some effect: now I can attach the drive and no panic. However, the drive is also not recognized by the system. Other info:
dmesg: (note there are several ACPI warnings here - any ideas?)

Blacklisting the uas module allowed me to see the vendor and product id, and follow the directions given by Da_Coynul. Before rebooting, I removed the initial file that globally blacklisted the uas module.

  • [SOLVED] Kernel panic when using external USB hard drive

I have a desktop PC with a 64 bit arch install, on a Core2 Duo 6320 CPU. I have been using (and continue using right now) a 500 GB "Iomega Desktop Hard Drive" external USB hard disk without problems. But I have just bought a 3 TB "Seagate Expansion" external USB hard drive and I'm unable to use it from my Arch install. Each time I try to format it or to copy data from the PC, Arch freezes with a kernel panic. Sometimes it freezes faster and I cannot see anything, but others I am able to see the following kernel messages, repeating several times:
    [11701.205071] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdf] uas_eh_abort_handler ffff880014e13380 tag 29, inflight: CMD

    [11704.483206] scsi host3: uas_eh_bus_reset_handler success
Strange enough, the drive is listed by lsusb command as a 2TB but I don't think this is related to the problem (as the OS sees the 3 TB). This is the lsusb output:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bc2:3312 Seagate RSS LLC SRD00F2 [Expansion Desktop Drive 2TB]
I have tried the drive on other PCs and it works flawlessly. Also tried booting Windows 8 on the same PC I have Arch installed in, and in Windows it also works perfect. I have tried using ext2 and NTFS filesystems. Tried also changing the USB cable without success. And right now I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions?

looks like it could be the UAS module , check https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=183190

  • [SOLVED] Kernel panic on poweroff/reboot only in X

    Hi guys,
Another day, another noob. I've been enjoying my arch experience so far and looking forward to continuing the journey! I've hit a small roadblock along the way however, I seem to get a kernel panic (system hang/caps lock blinking) upon trying to poweroff/reboot in the terminal. This seems to be since I updated linux from 3.19.2-1 > 3.19.3-1. Interestingly enough the hangs only occur when trying to poweroff/shutdown from X. I have no issue with either command at the initial tty console.
*Possibly related - during the upgrade I got 2 warnings - Possibly missing firmware for module: aic94xx and Possibly missing firmware for module: wd719xx
I went hunting for log files but wasn't 100% sure what I was looking for tbh.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Exactly: quoting the person who closed the original bug report
This is fixed upstream, and the relevant commit is cc: stable, i.e. should find its way to some v3.19.y. Closing, thanks for the report.
-- edit: the patch has been added in the package linux 3.19.3-3, the speed of Archlinux developers is awesome (and this should go also in the 'ooh, nice!' thread).
Issue still occurring. No change with 3-3. It's a strange one.

  • Solving Kernel Panics?

I came home and had a kernel panic.  Only thing that i could understand was xfce4taskman and rtl819 which is my wireless card.  is there a way to determine the cause and solve it so it doesn't happen again.  or is my wifi card dying or something? addittional info qbittorrent was running at the time.  had a few before when it was running before.   downgraded kernel and upgraded again before and all seemed well.  maybe it's a qbittorrent bug?

WonderWoofy wrote:Yeah, that last part of my last post I realized is filled with irony... lets hope you continue to stay shit outta luck.
well i tried transmission to download same files and no kernel panic.  i think it might have something to do with the client since it's happened 3 times before all with the same client running.  and it does mention my wifi card.  maybe the torrents are overwhelming my wifi card? this is just guesswork though.

  • [SOLVED] kernel panic on shutdown

    Hi all,
I'm experiencing kernel panics when shutting down. My system is up to date.
    No issues with boot.
I don't know what to look for or to check. I tried to boot with fallback image but shutdown gives the same messages.
after printing "power off" (until there everything is fine) it prints something like a stack backtrace...messages not understandable by me. Are they logged anywhere?
    the last one is:
    /etc/rc.shutdown:line 100: 1761 killed /sbin/poweroff -d -f -h -i
    What can I do?
    Hope you'll give some feedback

    As Stebalien posted correction:
    edit:  /etc/rc.local.shutdown
    #!/bin/bash
    # /etc/rc.local.shutdown: Local shutdown script.
    run as root
    nano /etc/rc.local.shutdown
    add line
    modprobe -r vboxdrv
You could also test if problem is caused with module vboxdrv, by simply running as root command mentioned above and see if your problem persist during shutdown. To check if you have vboxdrv running use this
    lsmod | grep vboxdrv
Then, by editing /etc/rc.local.shutdown you make it permanent.

  • [SOLVED] Kernel Panic - caps lock and scroll lock flashing

So I just spent a whole bunch of $$$ on a new desktop, and a couple of hours putting it all together, now I can't get anything except kernel panics when booting the Arch install CD
    Hardware:
    Core 2 Quad Q8400
    Gigabyte EP43-UD3L
    8gb RAM
    2 x Seagate SATA 160gb
    2 x Seagate SATA 1tb
    So far I've tried:
    - Arch ISO 2008.06 and 2009.02
    - Fail Safe Defaults in the BIOS
    - 'noapic' boot option
    - HPET in 32 and 64 bit mode
The strange thing is that the panic comes at various stages - sometimes before the init scripts start, sometimes after, and also during boot it complains about errors with fd0 - except there is no floppy drive.
    Any ideas folks?

Urgh, appears to be bad RAM... Running memtest and switching sticks in and out only shows errors with one particular RAM stick installed. I'll leave this stick out and try installing Arch again once the current memtest pass is finished.
I'd have expected better from Patriot!
