[SOLVED] Lost customized KDE Desktop config - reverted to default

I'm using KDE 4.3.1.  I lost the customized configuration of my Desktop, i.e. wallpaper image, launchers for widgets and applications that were present in the bottom panel and in the system tray, clock configuration, Desktop icons, etc.  All of this reverted to the default configuration.  This is the second or third time this has happened in the last few months, and it happens out of the blue, i.e. from one startup to the next.  Obviously, KDE upon starting up can't find the config file(s) in which my custom settings are stored and which it was able to access before without any problem.
My questions:
1.  What could have brought this on, i.e. why does KDE suddenly fail to load my custom Desktop config?  Could there be a problem in accessing the appropriate HDD sector, i.e. possibly imminent HDD failure?
2.  What is/are the file(s) in which my custom Desktop settings are stored?  Is there an automatic backup of these file(s) from which I could easily restore my previous custom settings?  Or could I simply reload the appropriate file(s) from my rsync backup of my home dir that I did just a week ago?

FrozenFox wrote:As far as imminent hd failure goes, you should take a look at smartctl's output for your disk. However, take it with a grain of salt because it's not a definite indicator of disk health or lack thereof, but should be considered as a general report of such as determined by the disk itself. Also, some filesystems have problems with incorrect shutdowns eating files. During any of these times kde screwed up, did you shut down by force in any way (or did the power go out?) or did the shut-down process proceed normally? What filesystem do you use for /home ?
Thanks for your comment.  I run smartctl occasionally, mostly to check the temperature of the HDD in my laptop.  Ran it again just now but the drive passed.  The only thing that looks rather high is the load cycle count (53323) but I remember reading some time ago when I was alarmed by this that smartctl sometimes puts out anomalously high values for this parameter that don't mean anything.
So, I don't really think my internal HDD is sick.  No other file reading failures have occurrred recently.  The 2 or 3 times this particular problem had occurred recently, I'd restarted or shutdown the system in the standard way and restart/shutdown proceeded normally.  The filesystem for /home is reiserfs3 which is a journaling filesystem.
I'm not much concerned about this anymore - now that I know how to restore my custom Desktop config files, it's no big deal if this happens again.  If it's some flakyness in KDE 4.3, it might be gone in future releases.

  • [Solved] KDE Desktop Effects no longer working

    Hello,
I just did an update, (I didn't think it was a major one, I don't recall seeing graphics update, though I'm not sure how to confirm - is there a way to see recently updated packages in yaourt?) and after a brief issue with powertop that was solved by a restart (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179789 - it may be unrelated though) I found that when I restarted, KWin Crashed, and since then, my desktop effects are not working.
I have gone to the KDE Desktop Effects Settings Menu, and under the advanced menu, set the compositing type back to OpenGL 3.1, clicked apply, and confirmed that I wanted to try it even though it had evidently crashed Kwin. I then received a message stating "21 desktop effects could not be loaded". When I clicked details, a popup window said:
"For technical reasons it is not possible to determine all possible error causes.
Desktop effect system is not running."
For the record, I am on a Thinkpad X201 with intel graphics.
    Any ideas?

    Some Extra information:
I just tried a restart, that didn't work.
I then went back into effect settings, and saw that "enable effects at startup" was not checked. I also saw that under the advanced settings, Qt Graphics system was set to raster. Since I'm not sure which it was supposed to be on originally, but the current configuration wasn't working, I also set that to Native, and then clicked apply. KWin then crashed, here is the output:
    Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Aborted
    Using host libthread_db library "/usr/lib/libthread_db.so.1".
To enable execution of this file add
    add-auto-load-safe-path /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.19-gdb.py
line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
To completely disable this security protection add
    set auto-load safe-path /
line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
For more information about this security protection see the
"Auto-loading safe path" section in the GDB manual. E.g., run from the shell:
    info "(gdb)Auto-loading safe path"

  • XBMC/mplayer and KDE Desktop effects

    Hi,
i have setup a arch based HTPC with XBMC on top of KDE, but there is one thing i were not able to resolve: The XBMC GUI and playing a video on it gets laggy as soon as i DISABLE the kde desktop effects. My system is i3/sandy bridge based with integrated intel graphics, vaapi installed.
    1. tried different playback settings within XBMC, same results
    2. as soon as i disable the kde desktop effects, xbmc becomes slow and laggy, even if i dont restart it, if i enable desktop effects its smooth again
    3. mplayer reacts the same way when used with -vo gl or -vo gl2, so it could be somehow opengl related. With -vo xv it runs smooth in both configurations.
    4. Cpu load is constantly <20%
    5. tried as root user, same results
    6. glxinfo reports direct rendering is enabled
so any ideas how to resolve that problem? or how to find out whats going on?
you may ask why i want to disable desktop effects, well with desktop effects on, videos run almost perfect, but sometimes there are smaller lags that, i guess, can be related to the desktop effects eating resources, so i want to try without them.
here is the custom part of my xorg config, tearfree was needet to get a vsync-enabled video playback:

Security vulnerability CVE-2012-0946 in the NVIDIA UNIX driver was disclosed to NVIDIA on March 20th, 2012. The vulnerability makes it possible for an attacker who has read and write access to the GPU device nodes to reconfigure GPUs to gain access to arbitrary system memory. NVIDIA is not aware of any reports of this vulnerability, outside of the disclosure which was made privately to NVIDIA.

No I didn't actually !! I just had "(syslog-ng network netfs crond)". Dunno why my rc.conf defaulted to that.. I believe that fixed the problem. I'll boot later today.. but hey, if that did indeed fix the problem: you're the man !
I myself would never had even thought about that.
Edit: yep, that fixed this. Thanks again!! -> marking as [Solved].

  • KDE desktop does not come up after log out

I have updated KDE to the lastest version using the Arch packages.  It worked wonderfully the first time, all of my widgits were intact and my desktop was just as I had left it, custom background and everything. Then, however, I logged out to make sure Fluxbox worked.  Now, even after rebooting, the KDE desktop doesn't come up.  It will bring up Pidgin which was running before but the taskbar and all of the widgets are gone and it has this grey background that is the same as the one in the KDM.
No errors are produced, although it does now ask for the password for a Wallet that "Plasma Desktop" wants to access.  I recognise the name of the wallet (kdewallet) and input the password correctly after this, two notifications pop up with informational thing.  One is about some indexing service being "rebuilt" for new features and the other is saying that it's falling back on a different sound output.  None of this seems to have an impact on the limited usability I have.
Has anyone else expereinced this?  Are there any log files where errors would be outputted to?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I have found the relevent messages.  They are at a pastebin. http://pastebin.ca/1522805
I'm not entirely sure what is going on here.
After the top line of that post, there are a LOT of errors related to "No block with decorrelation terms" in fact the vast majority of that file are those things.  All other "errors" are warnings related to my Fluxbox session which is working fine.
Lines 1, 11 and 12 seem to be the most severe errors:
[0xa2412b0] main input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
"/usr/bin/dolphin(4560)" Error in thread 3049428752 : "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"
    "/usr/bin/dolphin(4560)" Error in thread 3049428752 : "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Invalid name"
I have no idea where to even begin fixing them. However it is Nepomuk that comes up with the rebuilding message i mentioned in my previous post.

  • SOLVED: How to move XFCE4 config between computers

    Hi
In a severely optimistic moment I decided to create identical XFCE configs on my laptop and desktop computers, by copying my desktop ~/.config/xfce4 directory to the same location on my laptop. I assumed this would work, but now my panel application launchers, while showing up on the panel, are all broken. They contain no information about the linked application.
Both my desktop and laptop have the same apps and are running XFCE and Arch.
Any ideas how I can copy my XFCE desktop/panel from one computer to another? Especially how do I fix my launchers without having to manually recreate all of them?

  • [Solved] Fresh install, KDE input responses studdering

    Hi,
I've been searching the Wiki and forums here for about 30 minutes and cant find anything that covers what's going on. I'm not sure whether to look at my VM that I'm running Arch through, or at my config of Arch itself.
I installed Arch with a KDE desktop and everything installed and booted fine. I have my VM open and I can see the desktop just fine. Mouse performance (of which I pacman'd xf86-input-mouse) since it's just a Dell touchpad on my Vostro. When I try to type in the Konsole, I will randomly get multiple key presses (again, just installed basic keyboard input) as if its all of the sudden getting multiple inputs from that keystroke. The mouse, also is very studdery and will halt every 1/4 of a second or so.... not nearly gliding across the screen as it should.
My laptop has one of those Intel GMA 4500 HD mobile video cards in it. I pacman'd the xf86-intel-video package and then installed KMS (I think it was)... either way, followed the wiki on that and still have no change in performance. I'd like to find out where to start looking.
My laptop is pretty beefy. Its a Core Duo 2 running at 2.2Ghz on 3Gb of RAM. I allocated 100Gb of disk space in a VM and 1Gb of memory to Arch. Suggestions?

Wow... thanks for the overwhelming response. All of these suggestions really helped me figure it out on my own.

  • Outlook 2013 custom view reverting to default at random times

I have a customer who uses very specific view columns, color coding, and ordering to go with some custom addins. Every couple of months, his default view settings saved under "userdefaultview" will revert to default for no apparent reason.
Windows updates are not causing this as there is no time correlation.
System restore has worked once in the past, but is not working right now.
User is on Outlook 2013 connected to Exchange 2010 through an onsite server. He only uses one onsite desktop, and remotes in with other devices due to the large amount of customization on his Outlook client.
    Thank you.

since Outlook 2003, the view settings information is stored in the mailbox or PST file. it may be difficult to determine the root cause because this issue happens every couple of months. the cause may lie with the client side or the server side.
to work around it, try to back up the custom views to a pst file which we can use to restore the views if this issue occurs. see:
    http://www.outlook-tips.net/how-to/copy-outlook-custom-views/
after the backup, we can also try starting outlook with outlook /cleanviews and wait to see if it will fix the issue.

  • Hiding Customized fields through Config - T88M

    Hi,
My system parameter is : ECC 6.0.
As per requirement in my project, I have customized IT7 and added a new field - Annual Time . I am populating that field by default using some logic which wrote in the PBO of the newly created module pool and everything is working fine !!
    Query :
Business wants this field to be displayed only for Ausy employees and not for Indonesian employees AND they want this to be done through config only. How can I do that ?
    What I have tried :
I can very well go to the PBO and hide this screen reading the WERKS from PA1 for that employee but this is not what is reqd.
They require to hide this using Infotype screen modification.
When I go to SM30 and maintain the Infotype screen modification view : V_T88M and give the newly created module pool name : ZMPA0007 ...it doesnt list down the new;y created fields in this screen !! :-s
So my query is - Is T88M can Only be used to hude standard fields and Not custom fields ?? If it can be used for custom fields also, please let me know how can I see my field there in the list ??
Note : After creating the new field in PM01, I have assigned it to the standard MP00007 screen 2000. So now for all employees this std screen is getting displayed and also my little field at the end.
I tried to modify the feature for this std screen and then I tried to create a new variable based on WERKS and assign some other screen 3000 for all employees and 2000 only for Indonesian employees, but it is not working ... at all the times the screen 2000 with my newly added field is getting displayed.
What am I doing wrong or what do I need to do extra ?? or is it not possible to hide custom fields through Config I have to do it using coding only ??
Experts, please put some light !!
    Many Thanks,
    Cheers.

    Hi Sourav,
In table T588M create two entries for MP000700 with different variable key say according to the molga of the country one aus(xx) and other bagladesh(yy).
Now make the field visible/invisible depending on the country req.
Now go inside the entry, click on feature and give feature name as P0007. Now change the feature according and return the variable key what you assigned to the module pool.
Take the help of functional people to change the feature.

  • I want some KDE apps, but not the KDE desktop environment....

I'm on a laptop running Arch (yay!) and I am wanting to install Amarok and KTorrent. However, I don't want the KDE desktop environment, KWin (I use fluxbox), or things like KDM (I use SLiM). Is there a package, like kde-base in Debian, that allows just essential Qt/KDE libraries for applications like Amarok and KTorrent?
    Thanks in advance.

    Assuming you have it installed,
    $ kcontrol
or you can use kcmshell with the name of the options module you want to use, eg:
    $ kcmshell style
    to change the GUI theme.

  • Custom p13n-cache-config.xml

Trying to implement 5.1 P13N CacheProvider SPI Implementation from link:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24290_01/coh.371/e22621/wlportal.htm#CHDIFHCD
In step 2: The p13n-cache-config.xml has been updated with the <default-provider-id>com.tangosol.coherence.weblogic</default-provider-id> line.
    Question:
How can a custom p13n-cache-config.xml be loaded using a -D command?
    Edited by: user734247 on May 1, 2013 1:28 PM

    Hi,
The p13n-cache-config.xml needs to changed in each of your WLP application's META-INF directory. Coherence does not need this file but rather the provider configuration in file makes Portal application to start using coherence for p13 caching.

  • Removing Akonadi (aka, leaving a clean KDE desktop)

I don't use KMail, KOrganizer, file/folder puntuation/comments nor anything that would require Akonadi, or any kind of storage system, so I'm just wasting X mb of my RAM in something that I'm just not using, and that I don't want running on my system.
Is there any way to remove Akonadi?
I tried -R akonadi, but it depends on kdepimlibs, and those depend on kdebase-workspace, so basically I can't remove a simple thing like Akonadi without removing my entire KDE desktop.

Something like this http://trojita.flaska.net/ perhaps? It was mentioned on planet KDE a while back.
Yes, thanks, I've already tried it, and though it seems very promising, it's far too unstable for a productive usage atm. It looks very much like Sylpheed, which I'm currently using, so I would really like to see this develop further to reach a stability minimum (don't get me wrong, I'm a [testing] user, so a few bugs here and there is not an issue, but this one is just a little bit over the edge).
