Thumbnails building on launch, impermanent and missing several years
When I open it, Aperture always wants to generate thumnails (70,000+, for a library of 190,000 referenced files).
I'm working with a fresh install of 3.4, a new plist.
If I let the thumbnails build until done, it apparently makes no difference the next time (after quitting and relaunching Aperture). The same thing happens.
Looking at the package contents, I see that although I have pictures in my referenced library going back to 2005, the Thumbnails folder shows folders beginning at 2008. So several years of thumnails are evidently missing. (That's probably around the time I switched from iPhoto to Aperture as my photo organizer and editor. That might be a red herring, or is there something qualitatively different about those former-iPhoto Masters?)
So how do I make a permanent set of thumnails for those missing years, so that I don't have to either wait a long time for the program-slowing activity to complete, or manually cancel the 70,000+ temporary rebuild every time I launch Aperture?
Thanks for any advice.
PatrickLeonie,
Thank you again!
The 2008 thumbnail folder appears to include only the normal monthly activity, but inspect files numbers in each (using command-i to look at numbers of items in each folder, in each month) I do indeed find one day in 2008 that includes multiple-thousands of thumbnails. I conclude that it must be the date I imported a huge iPhoto library.
That explains why I appear to have a thumbnail for each picture, going back to the first photo by date (2005), in spite of the (redundant) rebuild that wants to happen automatically with each launch of Aperture.
I intend to do your recommendation: to manually highlight all photos prior to 2008 and generate thumbnails.
However, while waiting (expecting a long delay before I received an answer--I was wrong about that--thanks again!), I highlighted those same photos, and did a "reprocess from masters". That will take me a long time.
Then I will try the generate thumbnails.
Then I will report back!
Even on a blazing fast machine--MBP retina, with 750G flash drive, and Masters stored on 6TB raid via thunderbolt-eSata--these things take time! And I'm mindful to try (to change) *one thing at a time* to see if it fixed the problem, so that I can benefit from (and share with others) a simple cause-and-effect confidence that I fixed a problem.
FYI: I have been stalled in my editing now for almost 48 hours. Two days ago, my formerly reliable Aperture editing procedure began to freeze (spinning beach ball) while I tried so fairly routine edits on pictures. I'm not sure the editing problem still exists, because I have allowed myself to become side-tracked by this rebuild issue, thinking I might solve my editing problem in the process. However, the two might be completely unrelated.
I'm still trying to figure out what I changed (if anything) that might have caused the spinning beach ball. I can think of only one thing, and it has to do with previews--but I had better put that aside for now, until I can move ahead with this thumbnail issue (or just ignore it, if I can't fix it, as I was doing before the problem occurred, without apparently affecting the editing efficiency, prior to 48 hours ago).
I have customers waiting patiently, but Aperture is stalling my ability to generate income.
Were it not for this community--and particularly your help over the last 24 hours--I would be much more anxious!
Cheers,
Patrick -
I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures. How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old? Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?
I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem. Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos? Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that? The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

Missing thumbnails and previews Bridge CC x64. Help!

Thanks!Thanks, station_two!
I have surprised there all pictures from OneDrive on Windows 8.1.
When i copy those out of OneDrive thumbnails generated
Then copy all folder with images back and all works good!
Very strange. But good! -
My new tab page displays only an empty grid. Missing thumbnails -and- sites. I -think- my settings are correct. Please advise.
What are the settings for clearing history when Firefox closes?
Make sure that you do not clear the Browsing Cache as that will remove the thumbnails that are stored in it. -
Events and project thumbnails missing after moving to new computer
I just helped a friend to move to a new Mac. I have copied all her personal data to her new computer, so iMovie Events and Projects are present in her new Movie folder. However, after opening iMovie '08, all events and project thumbnails are missing. How could this be? Is there perhaps some library file that keeps track of all this that I need to copy as well? Is there a way to re-link iMovie with the events folder?
Try this:
First, make sure you've quit out of iMovie. Then go to your Movies Folder > iMovie Events > and then into the folder of the even that's giving you trouble. Drag the folder "iMovie Thumbnails" to your trash. Then open the folder "iMovie Cache" and drag the file "Cache.plist" to the trash. Restart iMovie. It should rebuild the thumbnails, and by regenerating the .plist file, it should have the data it needs to reed the new thumbnails into iMovie.
It worked for me. Hopefully it will work for you too. -
Need help with missing thumbnails...Iphoto11... have rebuilt twice, which took hours... rebuild works but when I close app and reopen, they are missing again. Did a premission repair in disk utilty and Iphoto, getting ready to rebuild again to see if it sticks this time... if not, any suggestions? I don't want to lose my images. Thumbnails are blank, but clicking image shows they are there.... so I know they are still on the computer.... not sure what to try next????
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -
Some missing thumbnails and can't edit names in iPhoto 08
Hi there,
I have a problem with some images in iPhoto. Had a crash a while ago and had to re-install everything from a back-up and I thought I could just drag a few recent events from back-up into the iPhoto folder structure on the hard disc (stupid I now realise after checking these discussions). The only problem is that the thumbnail image for the event is blank, and the thumbnail images inside the event are all blank too, though when double clicking them they open the right images.
Can I recover the thumbnails without re-importing them properly? (I have lots of slideshows etc set-up on this large (90GB) library) btw. Saw a post about dragging the few events from the 'Originals' folder back into iPhoto, would this be an option?
Also, I can't edit the event names - you can type but nothing happens after that.
(iPhoto08 - Version 7, Running on a PowerMac G5 1.8, pretty much as a music server, with storage for iPhoto, 10.4.11).
Many thanks
RichardJust sorted the font issue by re-installing HelveticaNeue.db.
Just the main issue to sort - thanks in advance.

Missing Thumbnails in CS5 bridge
I just got Photoshop CS5 and for the first time decided to use Bridge that comes with Photoshop. My problem is that Bridge doesn't show thumbnails for all my files. Some folders of images have a few thumbnails missing, other folders have a lot of thumbnails missing. One of my folders have over half of the image thumbnails missing. An icon shows up instead. I can still double click these icons to open the image in Photoshop but I can't see the image in advance of opening it. I found a whole lot of info on the adobe web site concerning thumbnails in a lot of various products. But nothing seemed to match what I'm experiencing. In fact a lot that I read leaves me more confused. Anyone else having this problem and have an answer?
90% jpg
Some NEF and some TIFF. None of those have missing thumbnails, but then I don't have very many of each.
Just got an upgrade to Bridge this morning, version 4.0.5.11. After it installed I checked for a change in the thumbnail problem. No fix.
ACR is version 6.4.1.145

Missing Thumbnail Fix, at least for me
I had an extremely frustrating issue with missing thumbnails (dotted blank boxes) with iPhoto 6 that migrated to iPhoto 8 with no relief. I tried all the thumbnail and library rebuilding, and permission repair issues to no avail.
In my case, the original images were fine - if I double clicked on an image, it would open fine in iPhoto - right-clicking to reveal the original in the Finder worked fine too. But for about 100 photos, no thumbnails.
I finally discovered that if I edited the image in some minor way, the thumbnail would rebuild. The easiest was to rotate the image (selecting multiple worked as well), and then undoing the rotation. I don't know what caused the issue to begin with, but this action fixed the issue in a way the built-in rebuilding option could not do.
Hope this helps.Tom:

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Bridge CS5 - Adding metadata to RAW files is hit and miss
Can someone help me??? Bridge CS5 will only add the metadata I enter to the files it feels like doing. It is hit and miss. Some files will add it, and other files will get the message "There was an error writing metadata to 100824_Banks_06.NEF". It will go through my whole folder of RAW files, then other times it will allow one or two of the files to get the information. I am going crazy! Is this a preference setting issue, or what?

Bridge is the weakest of all Adobe applications I use. It suffers from the same issues since its first release, when we were told to forgive the teething problems of any version 1 application. Now it's in version 4.x.
I actually spent most of the last two days wrestling with Bridge, and getty pretty annoyed with it. The "Error writing metadata" bug caused me no end of problems in trying to reorganise my keywording of 20,000 photos, and turning the air blue in the process.
I agree that Bridge seems to be the poor relation in the Creative Suite. I call it the Less Glamourous Sister. It needs to be 64-bit to host 64-bit Camera Raw, and it needs to manage resources faster and more efficiently.
I've spent a fair amount of time watching Bridge's activity with a resources monitor utility, and it's a very busy lady. It seems to poll several drives every second or two, accessing the registry, disk-based settings and library files regularly too, even when it appears to be doing nothing. And, even though I had indexed and cached my whole 20,000 photo collection, Bridge insists on recreating some thumbnails and previews at random intervals.*
I decided that the anti-virus software suggestion was a red herring in my case (I now realise this is the Mac forum anyway). Photos which gave an error became subsequently locked for several minutes, and I had to edit the sidecar files by hand. In the end, I worked out that, even though there is no on-screen indication of activity, Bridge is quietly working its way through every item in the Content pane, and it is this action which seems to coincide with the Metadata Error. Wait for it to end, and chances are much reduced, but not fully removed.
Oh, and Adobe's customer treatment might be debatable, but that helpful customer you quoted was a regular abuser of other forum users, so I like to see a silver lining from that post.

Missing thumbnails
In October I switched from OS 10.1.5 to OS 10.4.8.
My thumbnails have become only dotted outlines in iPhoto 6.0.5, except when enlarged.
Reading thru these topics, I realize it may be my fault.
I apparently committed a no-know by renaming the folder that appears after the folders MODIFIED and ORIGINALS with a different name. What I think I have done is rename the THUMBNAILS folder.
I have no idea what that original folder name was, so can somebody supply the name, and will that help? I would like to try this before going to the other methods for restoration.
Luckily, I saved all of OS 10.1.5 on my new external HD along with those files, so I can go to the old iPhoto 2.0 anytime. The Thumbnails work just fine in 2.0, maybe I should not bother with all this c--p!
G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)IT WORKED!
Thanks for the advice Terence. When I changed that Thumbnail folder name back to "Data" from what I had named it, all my Thumbnails came back. The reason I stupidly changed the name was that I was looking for the folder that holds the album folders, and wanted to identify that folder by using a different word. I still have lots of things to work out in going from iPhoto 2 to 6, and will post more questions as I go along.
Thank you,

After installing Yosemite 10.10.3 and the Photos application, my iPhoto library was migrated to Photos. Now, when viewing photos (in Photos), I notice several thumbnails of the photos are missing. The photos can be viewed, and look normal in edit view, but in the photos view these photos appear blank, as if the thumbnails are missing.
How can I rebuild the Photos library or the thumbnails without exporting and then re-importing these items individually? (That works but there are over 100 of these items.)
Thanks.I too ran into this issue. I discovered that the photos without thumbnails were photos that I had not actually imported into the iPhoto library - they were simply 'pointers' to the actual file that resided in a sub-folder in Pictures, which I had deleted from the hard drive some time ago. Most of my photos were imported into the library, but I didn't when I first got my Mac. It seemed a waste of space to have a duplicate photo inside the library, when I had the original already in place (this was before I understood what I was doing )
I was able to restore the original files, then I used the Command and Option function. I don't know if Photos prompted you, but I did get prompted to give it access to my media - that's when it tried to locate the original files but couldn't. After restoring them from backup, I wasn't prompted any more - and the thumbnails appeared. I don't know why they didn't show up for the photos that I did import into the library, though; seems to stop generating them at all if it can't find the originals.
I don't really know if this will be helpful or not, but I thought I'd at least share what I found helped in my case.
