[SOLVED]Ncurses applications broken

Hi,
I have been using Arch Linux for about an year now. Its really is an awesome distro and I havent faced much problems with it, but for recently a minor bump. I spend most of my time in the console session using the ncurses based applications like finch, tmux, etc. However, recently after installing gnome, these applications appear broken. Instead of drawing lines, the draw a sequence of charachters, which kinda looks ugly. Though, they appear perfect in gnome-terminal/xterm. After, some googling, I found out it might be related to locale settings. In my rc.conf, LOCALE="en_US.UTF-8". Is there anything I am missing out? Any pointers? Appreciate your help.

That would be mine... https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=143439
And I wanna say that 'all those others' are pretty well hidden or maybe people just don't know to use clever keywords, like 'ncurses'...
Just pointing out that it is not just limited to ncurses. I had the same problem with mc (which i solved a few days ago), and it depends on slang.

    Here's a screen shot to illustrate what's happening: http://i.imgur.com/SJv0B.png
    It only seems to happen when I'm in X. If I'm just at the console without X, I see everything as it should be, but in X, the ncurses apps display stragely like this. I use urxvt, but I also tried it in xterm and it gives the same result.
    Any ideas what might be going on?

    Looks like the wrong font is being used. According to the ncurses website, this is usually down to a terminfo mismatch:
    http://invisible-island.net/ncurses/ncu … ms_display
    There's three things I'd check here:
    1) What is your TERM setting?
    echo $TERM
    I use urxvt and mine is "rxvt-256color"
    (I think rxvt-unicode-256color will work okay, too?)
    2) What are your locale settings? Type locale. On mine only LC_ALL is empty.
    If there's any exotic languages there, you may need to tweak stuff, but I'm not sure what.
    3) Do you have the right terminfo files - its name should match the TERM value?
    See /usr/share/terminfo/r for urxvt (the sub dirs are divided alphabetically)
    (Note don't try and cat a terminfo file).
    Basically you're trying to remove any mismatch between these.
    Also, the tput man page recommends putting
    export TERM=mytermtype
    tput init
    In your profile.
    My term is rxvt-unicode-256color. I have the terminfo files in my home directory. I saw some info that basically just said copy the /usr/share/terminfo to ~/.terminfo, which i did. It has rxvt-unicode-256color in there. all of my locale settings are "C". I added the export TERM and tput init to my .bashrc (my .bash_profile just sources my .bashrc) and then sourced it, but it didn't have any effect.

  • [SOLVED] Default applications, Econnman, and Broken Audio.

    I have recently installed Arch Linux, and I need quite a bit of help.
    I need econnman, seeing as how I chose to use enlightenment17, but "sudo pacman -S econnman" doesn't work, as it says it can't find the package.
    Also, audio is not working. Need some help with that too.
    I would really like some help here, seeing as how it took me an hour just to register (due to the spambot command line not working).
    --EDIT--
    Now the only problem I have left is broken audio, and I don't know why.
    ----EDIT----
    Fixed everything. The forums provided nearly no use, and the wiki is extremely difficult to navigate.
    I do love arch linux though, and once you learn your way around everything (like the wiki), you can do nearly anything.

    Pray tell, why??
    Browse on over to https://aur.archlinux.org/.  Click on the packages link.  Then, search for econnman.
    You should find the package for which you search: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/econnman/.
    Click on it, download the tarball, unpack it, change directory to it, and do a makepkg -- All in accordance with the Wiki.
    But, it is not that easy.  You will have several dependencies you will need to resolve first.
    ewaller$@$odin ~ 1002 %cd econnman
    ewaller$@$odin ~/econnman 1003 %pwd
    /home/ewaller/econnman
    ewaller$@$odin ~/econnman 1004 %ls
    PKGBUILD
    ewaller$@$odin ~/econnman 1005 %makepkg
    ==> Making package: econnman 1-1 (Sun Sep 29 20:10:34 PDT 2013)
    ==> Checking runtime dependencies...
    ==> Missing dependencies:
    -> python2-elementary
    -> python2-e_dbus
    -> python2-edje
    -> python2-ecore
    -> connman
    ==> Checking buildtime dependencies...
    ==> ERROR: Could not resolve all dependencies.
    ewaller$@$odin ~/econnman [1]1006 %
    So, I am going to suggest something with which many of my colleagues will not agree.  Look in the wiki for AUR helpers.  I like packer.  Packer is in the AUR.

  • N85 Photos application broken

    Seem to have posted this in the wrong forum, so here is the original post again:
    -- BEGIN
    Not sure whether it was fully working beforehand, but I can't remember having had any issues prior. Ok, what did I do? I transferred an entire library to my N85, like 1000+ pictures with extensive tagging. I then browsed my picture library and realized that the application seemed to start not hanging, but first, not displaying the pictures properly anymore (remained in the initial blurry state), and then only displayed the broken image logo (if you don't know what it is, I don't know how to better explain it) [Retrospective Note: I was deleting certain images while browsing, so I didn't just browse]. Trying to switch the phone off and back on didn't solve the issue, and most operations resulted in a "General: System Error"! Thinking I've added too many images to my phone, I've deleted the entire library again, and only added a few selected images, like 19 to be exact. But, the problem persists. I can't even look at these few images anymore. Sooner or later, I'll get the same symptoms. And operations on these images, like tagging, result in a "General: System Error"! What I've also realized, is that my phone memory, all of a sudden, is only like 24MB. Even though before it was like 58MB. And I have definitely not added anything to my phone memory. So, does anyone have any idea as to what has happened here, and how to fix it?
    And yes, the rest of my phone seems to be working fine still, I can even select a slide-show as my wallpaper, select a few of these images, and these display all fine in the wallpaper.
    One other thing to add (and I hope I'm not being too verbose, but I may add anything I've noticed just in case it may help with the diagnosis): After I had deleted my library again, the tags remained in the phone, and even though there were no more images on the phone, not all of the tags showed 0 images, some of the tags still showed images, though when clicking on the tag, no images were shown. So, did something maybe not clean up properly?
    Any help with this would be much appreciated!!
    -- END
    I've tried a lot of things, inclusive of re-formatting the memory card, but all solutions seem to be only temporary. Here's one solution I've found that indeed temporarily fixes the problem:
    1) Attach N85 with USB cable to computer in Mass storage mode.
    2) Delete the following folder on the memory card: /private/101ffc31
    That folder contains the file glxmdstn, which seems to be the thumbnail cache for the Photos application. Once this folder is removed, and the Photos application is started, it'll create all the thumbnails again from scratch, and then the Photos application seems to work in all its glory.
    For a certain amount of time that is. I'm not sure what action exactly breaks it, for some time, I thought it was deleting an image, as I was able to actually reproduce it twice.
    I've deleted the cache, played with it for quite some time, no drama, deleted an image, and within a short amount of time, the issue arose again. I've done the same thing again, and the exact same thing happened. Though that wasn't it. As I've then encountered the same problem, looking at images with particular tags.
    Removed the cache again, even added another hundred pictures, and it's been working. Deleted a couple of images again, same problem. Deleted the cache again, now working. Have browsed images over and over, even from within the tag menu, and no drama so far, so I wasn't able to reproduce the issue by browsing by tags. Only deleting images seems to be a sure way to reproduce the issue so far (unless even that's a fluke). But something seems to be corrupting the thumbnail cache, somehow. And once corrupted, the photo application then doesn't seem to be able to deal with it anymore. Deleting the thumbnail cache works every time though. I'm trying to use it now without deleting any images, to see how long I can go without running into the same issue again.
    If anyone has any ideas, I'd be glad to hear them. And no, I have no idea why half my available phone memory has suddenly disappeared on me, but the last time I remember it being 50+MB was before I moved my photo library over, but that may be completely unrelated at the end, unless tagging and album management is somehow stored on the phone? And yes, I've read about resetting the phone to factory defaults, though I'd rather not, and I'm currently not even sure it would fix anything, given removing the thumbnail cache seems to do the trick.
    Thanks!

    "What im trying to say is as long as you have all the activation codes for your Nokia Maps, N Gage games and any 3rd party apps re setting a handset is not so hard and does not take that much time."
    That's right, it didn't take all that much time. What will take a lot of time though, as it seems, is to get all my N-Gage scores back. All my hard earned status and all that poker money --> GONE. My millions and millions of Asphat 4 dollars --> GONE. Even my pickup point score, as it seems --> GONE. What's more, my phone thought it would be clever to overwrite my profile settings in the arena with the empty default it had in my phone. That Photos app is better going to work from now on without any drama. If it turns out I did all that for nothing, I won't be happy, not the least bit, and I'll start cursing at Nokia just as some other people here seem to be doing.
    In retrospect, a re-format of the phone memory is not a resolution anyone should have to resort to in the first place. But I guess I've learned something today.
    Cheers!

  • Please solve this mysterious broken run arrow

    Everything works great for a while. Then suddenly, this will happen. This is on a PXI chassis using a lot of LVOOP. It happened on my PC so I moved the code all to a VM. It worked fine for a while, then it just came back. These are NI's VIs. The weird thing is, if I diagram disable them, I still can't deploy. I get a broken run arrow right at the end of the deployment (when it says deploying Main), but when the broken run arrow is clicked I have the error list with no errors in it. Tried closing everything, still problem not solved.

    If you have a happy vi running in LabVIEW and it has a happy arrow then it SHOULD compile to an executable. RIGHT??!! NOT... Frequently, especially if the project is LARGE, it will not properly compile!
    I show you how you can compile EVEN when you have a broken arrow!
    When LabVIEW fails on building an executable it sometimes does not show you WHERE the error is. It also tells you that you need files that you are not using! Go figure! This is because some of the files are ignored that should not be ignored.

    Hi,
    I have two web applications, one is NTLM and another will be NTLM & anonymous.

    When user try to load the images from the post, image link is broken. After refresh the page, some of the images are loaded and some are not. The image are being loaded randomly.
    I am suspecting on TMG redirection to different web application but i have no further information for that.

    [archlinuxfr]

    and run
    $ sudo pacman -Syy yaourt
    This made some error saying some signature issue. And roll backed the installation.
    When I restarted my system I was in the shell not in Gnome. I installed gnome again by using pacman. It did not download the packages again from the repo, but installed it.

  • [SOLVED] All applications lost their data

    Hi, today I started my computer, logged in with the same user as usual, but all the data of the applications are gone. My chromium lost its passwords, thunderbird lost the accounts, KDE lost all my panels and settings. Every file in my home folder is still there though.
    Someone has an idea on what this could be?
    Thanks already!
    Last edited by AlexCogn (2012-10-27 11:19:05)

    If the files are still there and not broken (e.g. because of bugs/damage) maybe the file and dir permissions were somehow changed (to another user account or something) and the current user is not allowed to read the files in the thunderbird directory (for example).
    Check the owner and permissions of the files and dirs with (for example)
    ls -alnd ~/.thunderbird
    and compare them to the UID of your logged in user account:
    id
    [EDIT]
    As illusionist wrote, maybe check the permissions and owner of "~/.config" too, I don't know for sure where apps store their settings these days.

  • [Solved] Java applications and awesome issue

    Hello Folks,
    I know this issue has been solved before, but it didn't work for me:
    You all know the issue with the grey windows when starting a java application, right? Well, I have that issue too and I'd like to bring that to work.
    I read this article   http://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Problems_with_Java   but the workarrounds didn't work (I didn't try the second one with wmname).
    Is there yet any other know workarround? I also tried this one but that one didn't work eighter:
    export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit
    [tectu@mercur ~]$ awesome -version
    awesome v3.4.11 (Pickapart)
    • Build: Apr 27 2012 09:01:08 for x86_64 by gcc version 4.7.0 (nobody@archbuild)
    • D-Bus support: ✔
    [tectu@mercur ~]$ java -version
    java version "1.7.0_03-icedtea"
    OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea7 2.1) (ArchLinux build 7.b147_2.1-3-x86_64)
    OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode)
    [tectu@mercur ~]$
    Does somebody have a working solution for me?
    ~ Tectu

    Oh, the 'wmname LG3D' solution did work indeed.
    I was just curious about saying that I use a different window manager, that I thought I'm just gonna try the two other solutions.
    Thank you guys!

  • Contacts application broken, how to reinstall it

    I can create contacts in the Contact application, but it doesn't save it. when I restart the applicatio everything disappeared.
    I tried to import contacts but it doen't create anything neither.
    Fresh install of Mac Os X 10.9

    If you're having trouble making changes to files that are inside your home folder (represented by a house icon in the sidebar of a Finder window), or if you can't get changes to the settings of an application to stick, then please see below.
    Back up all data.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
    Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
    You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
    Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if it frightens you, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
    Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
    In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
    Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
    In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Mail application broken

    Hi,
    I just bought new MBP 13 inch i5 to replace my old macbook which died after i spilled some coffee on it. I happened to have time machine drive, though almost 6 months old, which i decided to bring in during the initial launch of the new macbook. Everything went smooth until i started mail app. It started bringing in the mails and all but then i noticed it was bringing in one huge account i really don't need. So i cancelled the process. Immediately after cancelling computer suggested some critical updates so I proceeded with those, restarted the computer, deleted the account I didn't need and opened mail... The app opens just showing the bar up (the one with "file" etc.) and nothing else. I can't open preferences or new wiever window. Actually opening new wieving window freezes the whole application...
    Is there some pref folder to clean up or something? I already recovered the whole OS but it seems to keep the user data so no luck there...
    Thanks for your help...

    Solved it,
    Thrashed com.apple.mail... at the pref's and also deleted the entire mail folder. Then deleted all the accounts at the system preferences after which mail launched ok. Then it was just a matter of configuring the accounts. Seems that the problem was with old accounts that came with system restore...

  • [SOLVED] ConkySymbols font broken under KDE

    Ever since the fontconfig update yesterday, the ConkySymbols font (http://wiltur.deviantart.com/#/d3ij3mi) is mysteriously broken for me. It just prints black rectangles instead.
    All other fonts seem to be fine though. I've even downloaded the ConkySymbols .ttf again, but when I open the file in KDE Font Preview the preview pane stays blank.
    How do I fix this? Of course it might also be due to the KDE 4.9.1 upgrade somehow, I'm not sure.

  • [Solved] Help spotting broken links while using the shell

    Hello, here I am again with another doubt (probably a very basic one ).
    Is there any way to distinguish broken links from "good" links on the shell?
    I'm using xfce and in thunar its very easy to spot that, it says broken link but I can't figure out how to see it easily on the shell.
    I'm using bash by the way, just the way it comes out of the install.
    Thanks in advance

    Unfortunately no, I have tried with --color=always and with --color=auto its exactly the same thing, last one is used in the default ls alias (alias ls='ls -lh --color=auto'). I have seen this functionality in other distros, maybe if I fiddle with the file that decides which color to give to what will do the trick but I have no idea where to start
    It would be nice to see this "addition" included by default in arch, little things like this do matter a lot
    More on this ....
    If I do dircolors -p both in arch and on a system where this is working the output looks the same, particularly this
    ORPHAN 40;31;01 # symlink to nonexistent file, or non-stat'able file
    ... so I'm really lost here
    Ok ... I think I solved it myself, so here it goes. In arch things are getting colorized by default but I have no clue where and how it selects the colors and on the other system I have tried (Fedora 7) the "default" isn't the same as in the dircolors default, but here there is a file with custom colors.
    Anyway to solve this I have added
    eval `dircolors`
    to my .bashrc and that did the trick, I have also added it into /etc/profile.bash just in case I create more users and want it to be already set.
